Helping hardworking LGBTQ students is an investment in a better future for everyone

On the Freedom Trail to Full Equality in BostonThe 2014 Point Foundation Scholar & Alumni Leadership Conference came

to Boston late July for four busy and fun days of programming and events. This

year’s conference theme, “On the Freedom Trail to Full Equality” allowed the 170

members of the Point family in attendance—scholars, alumni, board members

and staff—to acknowledge Boston’s vital role in the history of our nation, of higher

education, of activism and of LGBTQ equality.

The annual conference program reflects the core components of Point Foundation’s

mission: scholarship, leadership, community service and mentoring. It is also a

time for making friendships, networking and building social capital that will have

Leadership Award recipient Jason Collins with Rim-Freeman Point Scholar Jacob Rudolph.

Dear Friends,Just like any other growing family, Point has a busy calendar of events

to observe and celebrate. The highlight of our year is arguably the

announcement of our new scholar class during LGBTQ Pride Month in June.

Point’s annual Scholar & Alumni Leadership Conference in July, when we

gather together as an intergenerational community, is also one of our

proudest moments. Then in August and early September, we enjoy another

wave of pride as our scholars begin or return to school.

Fall kicks off with the Voices On Point concert and dinner in Los Angeles

(this year September 13), when celebrities raise their voices in song to help

LGBTQ students. The application period for Point Scholarships opens

in November, and the thousands of applications submitted by the late

January deadline are a reminder of the great potential—and great need—

of so many LGBTQ young people.

As spring arrives, the Point family gathers in different cities for intellectually

compelling programs at our Regional Leadership Forums. Spring also

brings the joyous Point Honors New York gala when we celebrate great

names in the arts and entertainment, as well as the achievements of our

scholars and alumni. Our spirits climb even higher as scholars graduate

from school in May and early June.

Almost every day brings news of important moments in the lives of our

Point family: a coveted job offer for a graduating scholar, alumni getting

married, or a mentor becoming a parent. There is always much to share and

celebrate among the growing, supportive Point family.

Ours is an expansive family, one that welcomes those of you who support

Point by attending an event, volunteering time as an application reader,

serving as a mentor or regional trustee. Most crucially, the Point family

includes our scholars, many of whom have not always had the benefit of

family to turn to for help, guidance and encouragement.

Point is an important part of our scholars’ lives not just in June during

LGBTQ Pride Month, but all yearlong. To everyone who helps make this

possible, our gratitude is everlasting.

lasting benefits for individual participants, as well as the collective LGBTQ community. The conference program included sessions on sharpening advocacy skills, personal and professional development, and presentations on scholar community service projects and academic research. Special conference events included a Q&A with New York Times’ best-selling author Janet Mock, a briefing on LGBTQ rights from a White House staff member, and a walking tour exploring Boston’s LGBTQ history.

At the Conference’s Leadership Dinner, Rep. Joe Kennedy III presented Jason Collins of the Brooklyn Nets with the Point Leadership Award. Collins made history in 2013 as first openly gay athlete to play in any of the four major North American pro sports leagues. Kennedy was Collin’s college roommate at Stanford University, and is a strong supporter of LGBT equality.

The 2014 Scholar & Alumni Leadership Conference and Leadership Dinner was made possible by these generous companies.
