SPIDERIntroduction to the frameworkThe creation of a Proof of Concept (PoC) typically involves the introduction or integration of
hardware, peripherals, networks and software to address the customer’s specific business
requirements. During each step of the SPIDER process, the solution is planned, developed
and implemented as if it were being put into a production environment. Therefore
it is necessary to produce documentation (forms/documents or some other form of
deliverable) at each stage of the process.
The process has these benefits: -
• It requires the customer’s business problem/s and the scope of the project to be
clearly defined.
• The process captures the proposed solution in a set of documents - allowing costs,
risks and the effectiveness to be determined before the implementation.
• A timeline is established and expectations are clearly laid-out for the customer and
SCC staff.
• The physical resources needed to deliver the Proof of Concept are defined in
advance, allowing for the resources to be allocated to their new roles for the
duration of the activity.
• Lessons can be learned from the laboratory implementation prior to discovery in
the actual implementation.
• The Proof of Concept results are returned in an executive style portfolio of
documents, including reference configurations where required.
• Clear and concise documentation will lead to better project planning overall in the
longer term.
The completed SPIDER templates provide a record of the time spent within the
Enterprise Solutions Centre, and are an accurate ‘point-in-time’ snapshot of the events
leading up-to, during and post-PoC activity.
The SPIDER framework is a registered Lloyds LRQA/ISO9001 system.
