PMC TO AID IDOL HOME-BASED IMMERSIONS

This year, the civic administration has purchased 50 tonnes of ammonium bicarbonate of which 2 kgs will be distributed across households for free Starting this year, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken the decision to introduce an ecofriendly process of disintegrating Ganpati idols during one of the most widely celebrated festivals under its watch. • Suresh Jagtap, head of PMC's solid waste management, said, "Last year, almost 2.95 lakh of idols were immersed in PMC water tanks. We hope that people will respond to the new initiative. Now, we are conducting demos as well as showing video clips to school teachers and students. We are hoping that at least 20 to 30 per cent of the population in the city will take this up." Residents have mixed reviews about PMC's new initiative. Prashant Sankpal, a resident of Sinhagad Road, said, "We cannot take the decision to immerse the idols in ammonium bicarbonate without seeing the procedure first. But, it is difficult us to immerse the idols at home." Another resident of Sadashiv Peth, Vasantrao Sathe, said, "We must save our environment and I will definitely use the new procedure." Nilesh Khaire, a resident of Navi Peth, said, "PMC had initially told us not to immerse the idols in the river. Following this, they appealed to us to use water tanks and now they are asking us to immerse idols at home. We are immersing our idols in water tanks and are happy using this process." The National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) has completed all the tests to prove that idols dissolve in ammonium bicarbonate water over two days. For dissolving a one kg idol, it requires one kg of ammonium bicarbonate and five litres of water. With the increase in weight of the idols, the quantity of bicarbonate used will also increase. Anyone can take water in any utensil and add five litres of water and 1 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, stir well and immerse the idol in it. It takes a maximum of two days for the idol to completely dissolve; the residue can be used as a fertiliser later.

A separate Research to Market Fund (RMF) backed by private venture capitalists and the state government is also being set up exclusively for the RICH to fund the research and innovation projects that are going to be promoted or incubated by the platform, similar to start-up funding by PEs and other investors. To be headed by former dean of Indian School of Business (ISB), Ajit Rangnekar, as the Director General, the RICH will have a secretariat formed with professionals drawn from outside to run the day to day affairs of the body. It will have a governing council being formed with member institutions. All the industry bodies, including Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Nasscom will have their presence in the council to help forge a closer working relationship between institutions and the industry on research and innovation.

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)'s top laboratories, International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid and Tropics (ICRISAT), Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Indian School of Business (ISB), International Institute of Information Technology (Triple IT) are some of institutions that would be part of thios grand programme. "Institutions will share the current research among themselves while the match-making between the institutions for collaboration on a specific research project will be done by the secretariat. The new platform aims to fill all the existing gaps that come in the way of taking research to its logical end and it would also bring industry relevance to research," Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Department of IT and Communications of Telangana government, told Business Standard. The government is a founder and participant of the new initiative. ITC Chairperson Y C Deveshwar termed the concept of RICH as a potential game changer, when he spoke at the launch of Telangana industrial policy in early 2015 as the idea was found its mention in the policy document. The new platform will focus exclusively on industrial activity in five thrust areas namely Life Sciences, Food Processing and Agri-business, Clean Technologies, Hitech (IT hardware, electronics and communication) and Precision Engineering with focus on defence and avionics. According to Jayesh Ranjan, RICH is being established with a Rs 26 crore corpus to run the organisation partly supported by the government while the Research to Market Fund will have Rs 100 crore at its disposal over a period of time. The state government has committed Rs 50 crore to the fund while the rest of the funding will come from venture capital funds and other investors.

Centre proposes restricting entry of visitors to Taj Mahal to preserve structure

Visiting the worlds seventh wonder and monument of love, Taj Mahal, may not be easy anymore as the Centre is considering a proposal to restrict the flow of visitors as a part of the plan to protect and preserve the structure. A comprehensive crowd management plan is being drawn up including plans to cut the existing visiting hours. Officials in the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said a decision on limiting visits to Taj Mahal complex would be taken based on the study being carried out by Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).

The ASI had commissioned the Nagpur-based institute to conduct the study to assess the impact of tourist activities on the monument on a long-term basis as also the environmental effects on it. The NEERI study will also submit a report on the optimum footfall at the Taj Mahal. Once the report is received, the ASI will analyse it and take a call on the number of people who will be allowed to visit the monumnet per day, officials said.

  • NEERI, in its draft report has suggested several permutations and combinations on crowd management, among other matters. In 2012, the ASI had commissioned the study following a Supreme Court order to gauge the Taj Mahal's carrying capacity. According to the Ministry of Culture, 7.43 lakh foreign tourists visited the Taj in 2012. The number fell to 6.95 lakh in 2013 and slumped to 6.48 lakh in 2014. The entry fee for domestic visitors to Taj Mahal is Rs 40 and for foreigners it is Rs 1,000.
