However a more insightful description may be this: Fergus Craig is a man whose life has been deeply touched by the Austral- ian soap Neighbours. When the Pleas- ance Times met Fergus he was feeling slightly down. He had realised moments before his interview that the dayʼs work commitments were going to force him to miss Neighbours for the rst time in weeks. “Iʼm going to be worrying about what is happening with Donna and Ringo.” Fergus decided to write the show after being delighted when he got his hands on a DVD entitled ʻDening Moments: Births Deaths and Marriages in Neigh- boursʼ, He decided it would be unfair not to share the powerful foot- age with the World. He then realised he could be even more generous, and also intersperse his act with home video clips from his childhood. “ I want to people to see the child I was, and really un- derstand why that child loved Neighbours.” A couple of years a go in the Pleasance Dome Fergus saw Tadpole (actor Jona- thon Dutton). “I thought to myself, I could go up and meet someone from Neighbours! But I decided not to. It was a case of never meet your heroes.” Fergus has now decided that a Neigh- bourʼs star could come in handy. “It would be great to get one of them walking on stage when Iʼve said something bad about the show.” If he could get one member of the cast of neigh- bours to come and see his show he would choose Harold Bishop because quite simply, “he is a legend”. This is the rst solo show that Fer- gus has brought to the Fringe and it is regularly selling out. Not just for Aus- sies and Neighbours fanatics, if youʼve ever seen the soap, youʼll nd this show hilarious. Perhaps itʼs only fi tting that the cast of a play about backpacking are living the travellerʼs life in a caravan. Chloe Whipple, Merce Ribot and Rebecca Boey from Zoo Lodge are spending their Edinburgh festival in a campsite just 25 minutes from the bustle of the city centre, and learning fi rst-hand about the realities of cabin fever as experienced by their characters in the play. Move over Stanislavski, this is the caravan method! In Zoo Lodge the charac-ters pace around each other in the cloistered environment of a Johan-nesburg guesthouse. Amongst the staff is a Zimbabwean general on the run after a failed

assassination attempt on Mugabe. Tensions are high and the arrival of a pair of backpackers proves the match to a powder keg. Letʼs hope the caravaners donʼt end up as frazzled and dis-trustful of one another as the characters they play! So far so good – one week in and the ladies are chipper and full of the joys of the country-side. ʻItʼs lovely watching the city turn into craggy greenery on the bus ride home. And queuing up to use the campsite showers in our dress-ing gowns and wellies every morning is all part of the fun of itʼ claims writer Rebecca. But will she still be saying that three weeks down the line? That remains to be

seen. Meanwhile Merce is enjoying the novelty of living in a small metal box: ʻItʼs a bit like living in a Polly Pocket world – everything folds up and packs away into se-cret nooks and crannies!ʼ she enthuses. ʻCaravan dwellers get a bad rap but itʼs not all boring old couples and gypsies!ʼ says director Chloe. ʻCome round to ours for a barbecue or a bracing early morning walk in the surrounding woods and youʼll really know youʼre alive… Or alternatively, come see our show at the Pleasance 10 Dome at 13.40 daily!ʼPleasance Dome10Dome13.40 (14.40)5-31 August£6.50 - £9.00

ZOO LODGE! WORLD CHAMPION ICE DANCERS BATTLE ON, DESPITE GLOBAL DISAPPEARANCE OF ICE

Muhammed Aliʼs ʻRum-ble in the Jungleʼ, Roger Bannisterʼs 4 minute mile, Andy Murrayʼs 1st Wimbledon title… These are all events that redefi ned sport. They redefi ned human limits. They redefi ned brilliance. Tonight, at the Pleasance King Dome, former Ice Champions Heap Krusiak and Pebble Adverati will attempt to overshadow all

previous sporting glories when they bring Ice Danc-ing back. Since the last of the worldʼs ice disappeared 5 years ago and the sport of Ice Dancing went with it, Olympic Champions Krusiak and Adveratiʼs exceptional domination in the fi eld was cut tragi-cally short. After spending the last 4 years in semi-retirement on the cabaret

circuit, they have decided to attempt the impossible: perform their free dance on the wooden stage of a theatre.“Well, weʼre certainly not worried about it. Weʼre actually quite excited about it” explains Krusiak when The Pleasance Times caught up with him back-stage. The former champi-ons, still in excellent physi-cal shape, seem aware of the incredible challenge they face. Krusiakʼs tone has slightly lost the com-manding confi dence that we once knew, perhaps revealing an underlying fear that they may have set themselves a challenge that even they cannot achieve. The pairʼs understandable trepidation aside, there are certainly a great many who believe that tonight will mark a new dawn in the sport. “The fi rst time I

saw them in Montreal on the telly I begged my dad to take me ice skating. The fact that I can see them again, in the fl esh, is mind blowing” says 24 year old landscape gardener Lia Banks. “If anyone can do it, they can.”If this confi dence rings true, then tonight will go down in history. It will mark the day that two people, against all odds, showed the world that there is nothing that cannot be achieved. Once again all eyes will be on these mag-nifi cent sports people. Can Ice Dancing still exist in a world without ice? At 19:10 tonight we shall fi nd out.6.0: How Heap and Pebble Took On The World and Won.Pleasance DomeKingdome19.10 (20.10)5-31 August£7.00 - £9.50
