Issue #08 - 11th August - FREE with some digital graphics. Using maglights is a personal favourite - light art has been given a bad rep, but it’s a beautiful medium to mess with. Blacklight have facilitated the realisation of each projection. Are you studying design, then? I’m at Brighton University, an amazing place with a phenomenal course. I can’t rave enough about it. What are your aims for Pleasance’s digital design? 2011 has helped establised what will work. I’ve created a majority of the designs, to which other designers have added. I haven’t chosen just any old short films; they’ve all been created or chosen for Pleasance and for the specific spaces, particularly the courtyard turret. Hopefully we’ll develop new collaborations and maintain those that have helped make the 2011 designs such a success. Where can people see your work? Enormous screens are scattered throughout Pleasance on the Courtyard walls, screens and at the Dome. They’re some of the best canvases a designer could ask for. How did you make the graphics? For two weeks, Phil Knight has been locked in this shipping container. Inside, only water, cereal and himself. Why would he undertake such a feat of endurance? Phil Knight’s plight - The Everyday Project - raises awareness for the ongoing global disgrace that is human trafficking.

The cast of solD, whose show also raises awareness for human trafficking, performed snippets of the show outside the container in Euston, before journeying to Edinburgh. They send their regards to him as he now leaves his symbolic prison. “We thank Phil for going to such extremes to raise awareness of human trafficking” said cast member Peter Hobday. “Exposing human trafficking through the arts is a vital way of reaching the public. As we perform solD in Edinburgh, we too will shed light on the atrocity that is trafficking.”

14 DAYS LOCKED IN A SHIPPING CONTAINER

veteran Fringe performers instant sunshine are refusing to lie down. Hailed as ‘the hit of the Fringe’ by sTv in 1975, instant sunshine originals Peter Christie,

David Barlow and Alan Maryon Davis were Pleasance stars when most of today’s stand-ups were still playing tiddlywinks. But they deny that years bring wisdom. What gives them their freshness and vitality, they say, is their unbounded enthusiasm, their daily fix of statins and physiotherapy and their brilliant young bassist and carer Tom Barlow.

Instant sunshine may have their imitators and tribute bands (although they deny this too). you can experience their genuine pulsating presence live durin this festival.

Instant Sunshine, Pleasance Dome, 5-13 Aug 14:30

Acting legend David Bradley - star of the Harry Potter films (Argus Filch) - spent the day flyering for his favourite show, taketh me Away, in Pleasance Courtyard. sporting a topical Take That t-shirt, David spilled the beans about his ‘must see’ of Fringe 2011. He spent the day flyering in the rain to ensure this hidden gem gets the audiences it deserves.

‘’I cannot remember the last time a piece of theatre affected me so much”, said the star, “if there’s one thing you do at this year’s festival, it has to be to see this play.” video: http://yousend.it/ql8r6d

IN THREE MINDSby Ros Adler

I’m feeling torn in two - well, three actually. on the one hand I’m fearfully organized and efficient. We’ve got a very warm, clean, comfortable house; everyone says so - and I’m jolly happily married, thankyou very much. Aren’t I?

on the other hand - yuh - it’s sooooo oK to have no-strings sex with online losers. But why don’t they get that I’m not some lamebrain clingfest

who can’t sleep on her own? Hullo! I’ve got a breakfast meeting at 7:30, so why would I want fourteen stone of snoring hulk keeping me awake and shedding hairs?

And on the third hand - hang on, that can’t be right....but on the fourth finger of my left hand I’ve got a very sparkly ring. My boyfriend hasn’t had time to buy me one himself, so it’s not real but we’ll get a proper one as soon as he’s left his wife and moved in with me. We can’t spend much time together at the moment - well, none really - but that’s because he’s overwhelmed, I think, by how much he loves me.

All three of us - or is it just one - are in lol throughout August.LOL, Pleasance Courtyard, 3-29 Aug 12:55
