Last year I left sunny southern California and relocated to the beautiful city of Murfreesboro. And unlike the stubborn Iowans of River City, I have found the citizens of Murfreesboro to be quite welcoming. My favorite line in the production of Music Man belongs to Harold Hill, a confidence man who intends to cheat the community with his standard ruse of peddling band instruments and promising to teach the children of River City to play and form them into a marching band. Problem is, Harold Hill himself doesnt know one note from another. When accused by a disappointed Winthrop of being a liar, he replies, I always think theres a band kid. I believe that is what makes Harold Hills character great. Yes to some he may be a slippery con man, but to those who look more deeply they will discover someone who is able to see past a facade and pull out potential in the most stubborn, broken people. Where some might see a self-absorbed mayors wife, Harold sees a ballerina. Where some see a ten year old problem child, he sees a cornet player and where some might be willing to toss the trouble maker, from the wrong side of the tracks, Tommy Djilas in jail, Harold sees a great leader of men and takes a risk on the kid. That is the essence of honor. Acknowledging who someone is without stumbling over who they are not. Tonight I wish to honor my fabulous cast and all those who took part in making this production come to life. You are much more than you believe yourself to be. You are a great group of people with tons of buried potential. So high step and march through this wonderful life, because, I always see a band kid!Brittany Griffin ChoreographerBrittany Griffin is no stranger to theater.
