WORKSHOP 1 - “KINDERGARTEN COP - HOW PLAY WORKS FOR LITERACY” (indoor) Delivered by: Sue Palmer, Author and Chair of Upstart Scotland The government literacy benchmarks for five-year-olds are all about phonics, word recognition, spelling and punctuation. But in European countries, with better literacy results than Scotland, this sort of explicit teaching doesn’t begin until children are six or even seven years old. Sue Palmer has been a literacy specialist for over thirty years. This workshop looks at how play and the arts lay the soundest possible foundations for literacy.'

WORKSHOP 2- “THE LAST BOY SCOUT” (outdoor) Delivered by: Simon Henderson, Project Manager, Broxburn Family Centre Knots, Knives and Fire, what more could you need for a woodland adventure? This practical workshop will provide valuable skills and confidence in using these 3 essential tools, knots knives and fire, with your children. We will look at how we manage these tools with our children in a creative and responsible way. Forget Carry on Camping – think more Castaway with Tom Hanks!

WORKSHOP 3 - “THE NEVERENDING STORY” (indoor) Delivered by: Marion Kenny, Renowned Storyteller Join internationally acclaimed performer Marion Kenny for a fun interactive workshop to bring out your natural storytelling skills. The session will be a fine blend of demonstration, discussion and participation.

WORKSHOPS WORKSHOP 4 - “PLAY NICE!” (indoor) Delivered by: Jeanne McLaughlin and Tricia Hughes - Play Therapists @With Kids In the current climate there is a huge debate on the best way to tackle aggressive play in children, particularly boys. Despite attempts to limit or ban this type of play children can often be found endlessly challenging each other with game themes inspired by personal experience, the news, computer games, films and television. As adults working with children we often feel compelled to explain, limit or ban this type of play in case it spirals out of control. So what actually is aggressive play and is the word “aggressive” the right way to describe this important developmental play stage learning about conflict resolution, negotiating rules, establishing personal boundaries and developing emotional resilience. Join us in an exploration of play themes around war, swords, guns, superhero play and scary things to reflect on what can be done to enhance these skills.

WORKSHOP 5 - “WEIRD SCIENCE” (indoor) Delivered by: Sandra Hartley, Training Coordinator, Broxburn Family Centre Once you have set the scene of your play space lets think about the children that will use it. We will look at how we can influence the mind-set of children in your care based on the five principles of Brain Friendly Learning. Some brain power will be required as you will be asked to take part in a few brain teasing experiments!

WORKSHOP 6 - “STAR TECH” (indoor) Delivered by: Jude Moir, Primary School Classroom Teacher Making films is a fantastic way for children to express themselves. With the range of affordable technology and software now available, children are able to make high quality, professional looking films in a matter of minutes. In this workshop we will look at a range of apps, websites and resources which are fantastic for supporting the film making process. We will work with lighting, green screen, animation, music and more to give you a range of hands-on practical activities you can try straight away.

WORKSHOP 7 - “A PLAY SPACE ODYSSEY” (indoor / outdoor) Delivered by: Nathan MacGillivray, Play Development Worker, Broxburn Family Centre Come with me and you’ll be, in a world of pure imagination. You can be our Alice in Wonderland while you visit our out of this world play spaces in a galaxy far far away. While there you might pick up some cool ideas about things to do and things to make. Remember we are the memory makers, we are the dreamers of dreams. So what are you waiting for? Come and Jungle Book your space on this awesome workshop on play spaces and opportunities.

WORKSHOP 8 - “GEPPETTO’S WORKSHOP” (indoor) Delivered by: Tansy Lee Moir, Community Development Worker, Broxburn Family Centre Explore a world of shadows and light, movement and make-believe through the magic of puppets. You will learn some simple methods of puppet making to share with your children, plus ways of inspiring stories and staging performances. Puppets can be used in many kinds of play to express ideas and emotions – come along to this workshop and get in touch with your inner Muppet!
