EDITORIAL

H. Fehmi Cubukcu CCIST (Chambre du Commerce et de L’industrie Suisse-Turquie) President

Dear Readers, Let me first of all take this opportunity to wish all readers and all members of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Turkey a very peaceful and prosperous 2016. Following the holiday season, January is a little more real, reflective and guided by resolution. January beckons the future. It’s when next steps become concrete. Like it or not, we are charged with being a part of what the future will or will not bring. So it’s the time for optimism and hard work...

As Plato said: “I never did anything worth doing by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came through work.”

I would like to express my considerable appreciation to the Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Turkey for giving me the opportunity to present CCIST (Chambre de Commerce et de L’industrie Suisse Turquie), established in 1985 with its head office in Geneva and representative office in Zurich, in charge of the German-speaking part of Switzerland. It is organized and governed in accordance with Article 60 of the Swiss Civil Code. We are a dynamic, independent, non-government body which offers our members opportunities for networking between Turkey and Switzerland, discovering cooperation possibilities and facilitating the share of knowledge and experience.

Thanks to the generous contributions of time and effort on the part of our members and participants, many services have been offered over the years: bilateral events have been organized; many projects between the two countries have been realised. Our signature event in 2015 was held in November, with the presence of Mr. Tony Hayward (Chairman of Genel Enerji and Chairman of Glencore) as the keynote speaker and with record attendance by business representatives at a time of uncertainty and volatility in energy markets. Our upcoming event, which will take place in Geneva in April 2016 will feature one of the world's prominent experts in energy, Mr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency. This year also will mark the beginning of new key initiatives on the part of our Chamber, most notably the creation of the "CCIST Group" in the Linkdin Social Business Network, focusing mainly on technology, finance and commodities . Sign of the times! We are always seeking to develop new relations and we encourage new business persons with time and interest to join us in this very important cause. We also look forward to enhancing cooperation between our Chambers in order to better serve the Turkish and Swiss business communities. I strongly believe that we will make this happen. Yours sincerely H.Fehmi Cubukcu

INTERVIEW WITH...

YAPRAK ÖZER e-Bulletin January 2016

Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Turkey

What kind of services does Indeks offer? Indeks, is the umbrella for: Indeks Content&Communication- A content and communication management company, provides content material and communication solutions for the corporate world. Indeks SpeakerAgency, holds local portfolio of speakers along with foreign speakers, and represents LeighBureau (US), and cobrokers with European Agencies. Indeks Speaker Agency is an established Media Training Organization, home to a group of famous journalists and communication experts... Content Factory/İçerik Fabrikası – An electronic sales platform for ready to publish content; text, photography, video... Icerik Fabrikası is a syndicated platform for editors and writers. In your opinion, what are the advantages of working with an agency that provides speakers? Let me identify 2 points; first speaking is no longer a hobby, it is a profession, which means that not only performance but knowledge is important, corporate world should be working with professionals; secondly time is the most precious asset, corporate world needs performance based on knowledge and experience sharing. As a speakers agency, our job is to search and select best functional topics and speakers to deliver the subject. We are a bridge between the target audience and client. It is our job to match right speaker. We save time, we manage and further we help corporate world communicate within and to the outside world. It is also our job to communicate in different time and geographic zones and sustain it for best results. What is your impression of Turkey and the Turkish market so far? For speaking engagements, the market is still not developed. Needs time. Having said that, I remember my first days in promoting the notion of “speakers”; time has changed for the good. Turkish business has valuable experience to deliver to the outside world, and intellectual capacity and

appetite to learn more from others. I am hopeful for the future. Name us three extraordinary things about Indeks? We create, manage and measure content. We interpret communication for specific target audience, which is the missing part in many occasions. We tailor content for a specific situation. 6. What is the biggest challenge your company is facing in Turkey? Communication is not considered to be the number one agenda of the corporate world. Furthermore, it is not systematic and sustainable. Therefore it has no holistic strategic basis for a long term commitment. Short termism is a problem not only in economic terminology, it is a critical problem for communication. What future plans does your company hold and what are your upcoming projects? Our challenge is to adapt locally and establish & manage globally… Therefore for three major services it is our ongoing and never ending project cycle. If I am to pick one; our innovative and recent service is “content factory”, a unique business in Turkey. For the first time anyone can electronically buy content ready to be published. Content Factory is a storage, is a library, and a platform for writers, editors, photographers, and design people… You can buy instantly, or you can order from a specific person and or we can search and select the right person or team. Is there anything else you would like to add that would be of interest to our SCCT Bulletin readers? I am looking forward to seeing a real appreciation for content. “Content is King” should not only be a slogan. You need to invest in content-communication and in return communication invests in you.

Swiss Alumni Interview

Burak Özhan, Paksoy Law Office

Name of School and Place: • Public Primary School Grade 1 – 6 in

Winterthur (Canton of Zurich) • Public Secondary School Grade 7 – 9

Winterthur (Canton of Zurich) • Minerva Business High School in Zurich Grade

10 – 12 in Zurich

During which time period have you gone to school in Switzerland? I was born and grew up in Winterthur in the Canton of Zurich. Hence, I went to public primary and secondary schools from grade 1 – 9 in Winterthur. Following secondary school, I enrolled in the Minerva business high school in Zurich. How come you went to Switzerland? Whose influence was behind this idea? My parents emigrated from Turkey to Switzerland in the early 1970s. As my father decided to practice his profession as a dentist in Switzerland, I was enrolled at the Swiss School system when I reached primary school entry age back in 1981.

Do you have any special memories? Of course I do have special memories about my time in the Swiss education system. For example in the Canton of Zurich we have the rite of ‘Schulsilvester’ which is basically celebrated at the last school day in December. There primary school children would wake up in the very early morning hours and are allowed to make all kinds of nuisances in the public such as making noise in the streets, waking up strangers by clinging at their doors and running away, smearing toothpaste or mustarde at door handles, etc. In secondary school as children become teenagers doing nuisances would give away to partying troughout the night on ‘Schulsilvester’. In addition, I also enjoyed the annual school trips ‘Schulreisen’ which would basically be a day in hiking paths in the beautiful Swiss alps as well as setting up fire for lunch by collecting wood to grill sausages, etc.

Page 6: PLATINUM PATRONS GOLDEN PATRONS SILVER ...prosperous 2016. Following the holiday season, January is a little more real, reflective and guided by resolution. January beckons the future.

Please give us a brief insight on your personal experiences during that time. As Switzerland due to its economic attractiveness attracted many immigrants over the last century, classrooms resembled a melting pot. Classes with the exception of the German, French and English lessons were all tought in ‘Swiss German’ which in my opinion fostered a Swiss identity amongst the children from a diverse background. Whenever I returned to Switzerland from a trip to Germany I felt again back home being able to communicate in ‘Swiss German’ creating comfortable and warm feelings for me compared to ‘High German’ which felt distanced and stiff. Furthermore, I enjoyed also the small class rooms of 15 to 20 students throughout my school days in Switzerland. Describe briefly the Swiss education system in comparison to the Turkish one. The focus in the Swiss School system is on public schools. A large part of the population independent of economic class send their children to public schools rather than to private schools. Another important difference between the Swiss and Turkish education system is that a large part of the Swiss students after secondary school grade 9 choose to opt to continue with an apprenticeship rather than to continue with high school leading to University. The apprenticeships last in general 3 to 4 years depending on the professional field. I believe the well-developed apprenticeship system provides a good option especially for youths interested in craft and trade related sectors and is one of the sources of economic added value of these sectors. As only a small percentage of youths decide to continue with high school following secondary school leading to University, graduating high school students do not face university entry exams as a result of space availability issues in order to enter University except in some popular faculties such as Medicine. What is so special about Swiss education? What do you appreciate most having studied in Switzerland? Teachers in the Swiss education system are in general non authorative and encourage active participation and discussion. Hence children learn

from a very young age on to freely say their opinion and tolerate others’ opinion. In my view, this is the foundation for Switzerland’s innovativeness as a nation in many areas. In addition, the Swiss education system as a result of Switzerland’s prosperity benefits from a well-equipped infrastructure. What would you recommend Turkish parents who want to send their children to a Swiss boarding school? I would recommend Turkish children sending their children to a Swiss boarding school. Students will meet people from all over the world which should foster their cultural sensitivities at a very young age in order to be ready later for a globalized world in every aspect of life. In addition, they will also experience Swiss traits such as discipline, precision and exactness. Furthermore, students will also enjoy Switzerland’s beautiful scenery of lakes and mountains and its central location within Europe.

Proceutica: Your Bridge to the Dynamic Turkish Pharmaceutical Market Proceutica is an independent regulatory and market access consultancy and service provider for pharmaceutical companies from overseas. Established in 2008, with offices in Istanbul and Ankara, its mission is to assist the introduction of prescription medicines in Turkey. With pharmaceutical sales in the retail sector alone the near equivalent of CHF 6 billion at ex-factory prices, and with original brands accounting for 60% of this total, Turkey is a major market for research-based firms, dominating the region. By turnover, it is ranked among the top-20 markets for medicines worldwide and is in the top-7 in Europe. Faced with an ageing population, and one which is increasingly demanding access to the latest, most effective treatments, the government has set ambitious healthcare goals. One of these is to prioritize the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical sector in the structural transformation of the country. Switzerland’s reputation for quality, its long history as one of the global leaders in pharmaceutical innovation allied to exporting skills ensures a warm Turkish welcome for Swiss technology. Despite its small geographical size, Switzerland is already the fourth largest exporter of medicines to Turkey, surpassed only by Germany, the US and France. Proceutica (previously known as Intermed) has a dedicated team of highly-qualified consultants with many years of practical experience in medicine, regulatory affairs and pharmaceutical sales/marketing in Turkey. They are supported by an extensive network of national and international experts. From the management of local clinical trials, through advice on entry strategy, to complete hands-on execution of market authorisation applications, health technology assessment and pricing/reimbursement processes, Proceutica can offer whatever a client requires to achieve market access for its products. Gülce Belgin, Proceutica’s founder and owner, holds a BSc degree from Boĝaziçi University and an MBA from Koç University. She has worked as a business consultant to the international pharmaceutical industry in Turkey since 2002, developing a special expertise in rare disease treatments, so-called orphan drugs. Her current focus is with named-patient and compassionate use programs. These enable patients to receive a new therapy as quickly as possible through existing and innovative early access mechanisms if the drug is already registered overseas and there is an unmet medical need in Turkey for it. ‘Let us be your local partner to help achieve your potential quickly and cost-effectively here’, Mrs Belgin says. Proceutica offers a unique yet flexible approach, and we will protect the interests of our clients without compromising local regulations and ethical rules, she adds. Turkish firm receives first order from €600 million worth CERN Project A machinery firm based in the capital became the first firm from Turkey to be awarded with an order from the Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) project thanks to the efforts of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB). As Turkey became an associate member state of the project on May 6, 2015, TOBB accelerated its efforts for Turkish firms to increase their share in this market. Through conferences, TOBB informed Turkish firms about the needs of CERN's departments and CERN Industry Contact Office was founded to make Turkish firms suppliers for the project. Dora Machinery, an SME operating in Ankara's famous OSTİM industrial site, was awarded a modest order by the CERN. The firm, employing 75 people and mostly sub-contracting for defense projects, was awarded with the project through its innovative mindset. Speaking to Daily Sabah, the company partner Pekin Çakmakçı said that the order will be the beginning stage for Turkish firms to take part in the project. "Everything starts by increasing your awareness on business opportunities, what is going on around you. We first attended TOBB's conferences on CERN tenders to receive information. Then we contacted CERN, told them about our references abroad and sent them our presentation. They invited us for their tender, and our first offer was found suitable" Çakmakçı said. TOBB Chairman Rıfat Hisarcıklıoğlu said that the annual market created by CERN will be an important target for Turkish businesses and provide support for the growth of the economy. "Through the contact office and meetings, we aimed to make way for our businesses. First order was received as a result. This is the first step for a giant market. I believe that in the upcoming processes more Turkish firms will receive bigger shares. Innovation and high technology will be the biggest elements for the growth of our economy. We care about our associate membership to CERN in that regard" Hisarcıklıoğlu said. The CERN makes annual purchases of goods and services worth around 600 million euros annually. Turkish researchers produce flexible, light solar panels A group of five researchers from Gediz University in İzmir designed flexible solar panels made of soundwaves and plastics. The budget-friendly, semi-transparent panels, which are both light and durable, will increase electricity production from the sun. Designed based on nanotechnology, solar panels can be used to cover the façade of buildings, allowing them to produce electricity. Assistant Professor Yavuz Bayam, the head of the research team, said silicon solar panels are applied on certain places. "Flexible solar panels, on the other hand, can be installed on many surfaces. I believe it will contribute to the renewable energy sector," he added. The panels were designed following a year-long study. The team was also invited to a conference by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers in the U.S. "We will introduce our project there," he said. The Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) will collaborate with the team to develop the product for its market release.
