Mnr.

Mr Philip Mkhondo said: “Charity is importantto me. I’ve joined a Charity Circle in CapeTown. I’m now donating R70 per month. I’vejoined to win some of their prizes, but also todo good. I am a Christian and that is why Iwill always try to help where I can and willalways be honest. Government is trying tosupport organisations doing good work”.

Mr Ludwick Mabanna said: “To me charitywork is so important. If you find people whoare unable to do things, who are in need, youmust help them. Not only on the 18th of Julywhen it is Mandela’s birthday. Government ishelping, but it is not enough. Charity is notonly by helping with food and money, butwith your time and skills as well”.

Yesterday, 18 June 2013 was NelsonMandela’s birthday and in celebration manypeople accross the world donated 67minutes of their time to do some charitablework. 67 Represents the years Mandela wasactive in trying to bring change and peace tothe world. Some people gave of their time and skills, others donated and delivered food or clotheswhere it was needed. Burgersfort andsurroundings were no different. There are however people who feel that theyare tired of giving and giving. Thatgovernment should be doing more toimprove the circumstances of people inSouth Africa and that they will not be giving acent or a minute more before they cannotsee an improvement from government’s side.We asked readers how important is charitywork to them. Do they still give? Do theythink government is doing enough to assistcharities and to relief the need for charity inthe country? Most people are keen to be charitable andreach out to others and most feelgovernment is trying its best to assist whereneeded. One person interviewed wished toremain anonymous. His sympathy was withgovernment. He said: “People are unthankfuland are making government’s job difficult.Government is providing free education anda free meal through the feeding scheme tothe children of the poorest of the poor.Education is the key to a better life. Yet,when you walk in Burgersfort you see somany young people who are not going toschool. Government provides free condomsat the clinics, but people who cannot affordto raise their children to have a good life, aregetting more and more children. The needfor charity is not a lack of governmentsupport, it is because communities are notworking together to get themselves intobetter circumstances”.Read on this page and page 7 what otherreaders had to say on the subject.
