Opposition parties in Greater Tubatse Municipality staged a walkout from the council chamber in Burgersfort last week Thursday in protest against what they see as unlawful proceedings with regard to the way things are done. Their main objection against what was happening, is that they did not receive at least 48 hours notice of the urgent council meeting as required in article 17 (c) of the Rules of Order of the Council of the Greater Tubatse Municipality 2007 (resolution no A87/2007). According to the parties they also did not receive agendas before the time and had no time to study the issues before the council. Their objections was noted and then they were ignored, they claim. The fact that everything did not happen according to the rules (they were phoned according to the rules, but only 26 hours before the time and no aganda was available at that time). This is not the first time they are complaining as they say it happend before. Then they received the aganda less than 24 hours before the meeting. The DA investigates possible legal action, while the other parties will refer the issue to their provincial offices. What happened inter alia at the meeting is that Acting Municipal Manager, Lemon Phala, was appointed Municipal Manager.

A group of 14 tourists from America visitedKgautswane Thusong Service Centre inLimpopo on a cultural exchange experience.

The tourists consisted of nine AfricanAmerican youths and five chaperonesarrived at the centre on 8 August and theyslept at the centre. Their visit coincidedWomen’s Day on 9 August and theycelebrated the day with some of the villagersat Ga-Makgopa in Kgautswane Villagewhere they spent the day experimenting andhaving the feel of African village woman’slife. Among other things, they were taughthow to grind mealies, fetch water from a wellabout a kilometre away, balancing a waterpot on the head while at the same timecarrying a baby on the back, cook porridgeand other cultural meals.

According to Ms Sharon Lachappelletheir visit was a learning expedition to learnand experience South African village life andwhat is happening at Kgautswane ThusongService Centre. “Back home I manage asimilar institution called Baxter CommunityCenter specializing in mentoring, day carecentre, dental and medical clinic, employment, tax programme, budgets, sewing classes, recreation classes, prayerclinic, cooking classes and communitygardens. I think we share the same ideassome of the activities are similar to those wedo back home. We plan visiting the villageevery year”.

Some of the tourists said it was their firsttime to set foot on South African soil andthey had this to say: 14 year old DangelaKlyce said; “It is awesome, I enjoyed myselfand it is very different to America”.

19 year old Shanea Winbush said shehas learned not to take things for granted. “Iwas surprised that we share many beliefs. Iwas also amazed at how the communitycame together as one; we tend to do that aswell back home in the US”.

Raqhelle Millbrooks (14) said it was funto experience the African cultures personallyrather than watching it on TV. Actually doingit! Like carrying the wood, water and a cryingbaby at the back.

Calvon Owens (14); “It was exciting tolearn what South Africans went through andI learned the true story not what we see onTV. TVs show only the sadness part of thecountry and they forget or ignore thehappiness and the loveliness of thisbeautiful countryside”.

Kgautswane Thusong Service Centremanager and founder Clara Masinga saidshe wholeheartedly enjoyed the day andlearned a thing or two from the tourists. “Ifeel very blessed to have people fromabroad recognizing what we do in this littlevillage.

I appeal to others to follow a suit andsupport this village developmental initiative”.Masinga can be contacted at 082 533 7718.

Last week Friday Laerskool Burgersfort in preparation oftheir Winterfees the next day participated in some funactivities. The day was also attended by Samancor Eastern ChromeMines who believes that children are the future. Ms Davidavan der Walt, Communication Specialist at ECM says thatinvestment in schools and nurturing of children is high onECM’s priority list. The school hosted a fun go-cart day forall thepupils which formed part of a fund raiser for theschool. On Saturday singer Zak van Niekerk performed atthe school. Mr Whity Ludick, who is a member of theSchool Governing Body, approached ECM to sponsor Go-Carts for the day. ECM took this request to heart and

supplied the school with two go-carts and apit crew. The children had a blast and theECM pit crew luckily only had to repair onebuckled tyre.Due to all the physical activity involved, avoidably empty cold drink cans ended upon the school field. ECM place a lot of valueon keeping the environment clean and cameup with a creative solution. The ECM teamtook along foam caps and motivated the kidsto clean up the field in return for caps. The

kids gladly cleaned up and were very happy to receive their caps.ECM would like to extend a word of thanks to all the volunteers whoparticipated, and to Corne Muller from Lumcor and Kobus Coetzeefrom MRE who supported ECM with the transport of the go-carts.

6 NEWS 12 AUGUST 2011

As South Africans celebrated Women’s Dayon 9 August the spotlight fell on theempowerment of women, especially in thebusiness sector. The 2011 Women in Corporate LeadershipCensus of the Business Women’sAssociation showed that only 4.4% of chiefexecutive and managing director positionswere held by women and only 15.8% of alldirectorships are held by women.President Jacob Zuma, in his speech at thePeter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane saidthat they are worried that ”the target of 10%for women participation in mining was notmet as the recent Mining Charter review hasindicated. This means that more work mustbe done to open this sector for women”. TheANC also expressed their worries about theslow pace of empowerment of Africanwomen in the workplace. They account foronly 0.8% of top management in companies.According to reports government isconsidering legislation to speed up theempowerment of women in the workplace. Many women have been politicallyempowered with 43% of the cabinet beingwomen, but many are still economicallydisadvantaged. The DA, Numsa and Inkatha Freedom Partysaid that women must be given ways toempower themselves. Many women are noteconomically active due to the high cost ofliving, HIV, the cost of transportation and thehigh rate of adult unemployment (for bothmen and women). We asked readers whether they think betterlegislation would be the answer toempowering women and why they thinkthere is still such a gap between men andwomen in the workplace?

Why are there so few women in

Mr German Molobela said: ‘Yes, legislationwill work. If women qualify, it is right to putthem in the positions. Many people thinkwomen can’t do the job, but there are somestrong women out there. I encourage womento be strong and to work hard”.

Mnr.

Mr Johannes Masekwameng said: “I don’tthink legislation will work. It must not beforced. The gap is still there because manyladies can’t do a man’s job. Like in the mines. The women can’t carry heavy things whilethe men can. Maybe in the offices they canhire more women than men”.

Left: Mr Prince Mkhunou said: “The best wayis to balance without forcing. Empower thewomen as many are not skilled. Take themstep by step and they will end at the top.Women are not given enough chances. Some women may have the capacity but notthe confidence”.

Links: Ms Ester Smith sê: “Ja, dis goed maarnet as die vroue die ondervinding het. Ekdink party vrouens voel minderwaardig omdieselfde werk as mans te doen”.

Mr Samuel Mamba said: “I think in especiallyproduction there are not enough women, butproduction won’t go so well with women aswhen men are in charge. There is aperception that women can’t do the job. Some can, some cannot’”.

Mnr.

top positions in South Africa?

Ms Thelma Tebele said: “They must makethe law. It is our history that makes us lagbehind. A long time ago they did notrecognise women. Now we have the samequalifications, attend the same schools anduniversities”.

Mr Amos Mkhonto said: “It will work to bringin a law. There is a perception that womenare less qualified than men”.

Mr Jacob Tjia said: “It won’t work. A womenmust be in a management position becauseof her qualification. It is the most importantthing. They do get appointed to the mines.Their most top positions are held by women.I disagree with statistics”.

Mnr.

Mr Theo Nhlangulela said: “When women getthe skills and do the work satisfactory, it willbe good to have them in those positions.Don’t take a lesser person just to fill theposition with a female candidate. Manywomen are still scared to go and work at themines as it is a man’s workplace and mostjobs are physically fitting men better thanwomen”.

Left: Mr Ernest Maloma and Ms RachelMaloma said: “They must empower women.Women have the potential. Empower themwith skills and the rest will happen by itselfwithout legislation”. With them is TeteloMaloma.
