The fire tookeverything they had

Bewareof

Winter took on a new meaning for Mr NatureNyathi, a shack resident in the informalsettlement at Extension 10, Burgersfort, when he woke up in the middle of the nightlast Sunday.

His and other shacks have startedburning. Mr Nyathi quickly alerted the otherresidents in the area and telephoned thePolice from his cellphone, while otherresidents evacuated their homes.

At this stage the flames were so fiercethey could do nothing. The Police did notanswer the telephone. Mr Nyathi tried theemergency facility on his cellphone. Theyanswered, but the network operator wantedto know directions to the informal settlementfrom Johannesburg…

At last, somebody else got hold of theFire Station.

The Fire Brigade promptly arrived on thescene, but there are no decent roadsbetween the shacks. Luckily the fire hoseswas long enough so that the firedepartment’s personnel could prevent theblaze from spreading.

When the sun came up on Sunday, 50people from 34 shacks had nothing left. Thelocal councillor, Annah Masete visited thedestitute group with Greater TubatseMunicipality’s disaster manager, Mr HarrySelahle, who promised to assist them withinter alia new identity documents at theDepartment of Home Affairs. The Mayor, CllrNkosi Josias Mahlake phoned fromPolokwane, saying he could not visit thescene, but promised assistance from themunicipality’s side.

Only a six-year-old boy, Temosho Matjie, sustained injuries, but was promptly treatedat Burgersfort Clinic.

The cause of the fire is not known, butrumour has it that prostitutes who allegedlystole money from customers fled intoExtension 10. The angry customersallegedly set the houses alight to get to theladies of the night…

T the time of going to press yesterday, the Red Cross has donated 100 blankets tothe fire victims, and Limpopo DisasterManagement 50 blankets, while GreaterTubatse Municipality was busy organisingmattresses to sleep on.

Little Temosho Matjie (6) sustained injuriesduring the fire that braged with such avegenance that not even identitydocuments or money could be saved.

You park your vehicle en get out, push the button of theremote to lock your car, and leave your vehicle to go and doyour business.

Security companies and business owners in Burgersfortare now warning customers to make sure that their vehiclesare locked and that the alarm system of the vehicle armedwhen the buttons on your remote are pressed. Check by handif the vehicle is locked.

In one incident at Temba Engen criminals followed acustomer from the bank. The customer got out of his car atthe garage and ‘locked’ it.

The alarm signal was blocked by another remote deviceand the car did not lock. One criminal followed the customerinto the shop and made sure he is kept busy while the secondperson got into the presumed locked vehicle and stole themoney that he received from the bank.

The whole crime took place within 3 minutes and no onegot hurt.

Because the customer immediately realized that themoney was gone they reported it to Engen Temba who in turngot the video footage and cars plates to the police in recordtime. The Police established a roadblock on the road toPolokwane and caught the alleged criminals.

This incident at Temba Engen is not an isolated one asPretect Security say they know similar incidents also tookplace at the Morone Centre shopping complex and at TwinCity shopping centre and at parking lots outside some of thebanks in Burgersfort.

US visitorscelebrate MandelaDay in Kgautswane

As the world celebrates Mandela Day, tourist visiting the countryjoined hands in commemorating the work is this South African icon.On Nelson Mandela International Day communities are encouragedto contribute to the society by promoting values, vision and work ofMadiba by voluntarily working 67 minutes of their day helping thosewho are less privileged or cleaning the environment.

Tourists from Michigan in the United States of America (USA),visited Kgautswane Village July 27 and they spent a day with theelderly and children. The visitors arrived on July 27 and slept over atKgautswane Thusong Service Centre and were treated to a villagelife.

The next morning they met the elderly people who are cared forat the centre and they had a light moment of information sharing andpresenting gifts. Their last stop was at Asizilingeni Bakithi Crèchewhere they were welcomed with songs by the happy children of thecrèche.

The guests were accompanied by Clara Masinga the co-founderof Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre. Masinga is known worldwide for her contribution in uplifting lives of this community. She hasalso received a lot of accolades amongst others, the order ofBaobab from the President for recognizing her sterling work incommunity work. According to Paul Scholten who facilitated thevisit, he has known Masinga for nearly 15 years and they have beencoming to the centre quarterly.

“Our visit coincide with Nelson Mandela International Day andwe thought it would be a good idea to share the day with those whoare less privileged in support of Madiba’s vision and values.

”We want to encourage the youth of South Africa to take a leadand act against social injustices that they are faced with today. Theyouth of 1976 were faced with Apartheid, but managed to conquer it.The youth of today are facing the scourge of HIV/AIDS. After somediscussions with some of the members of the community, we havedecided to start a Youth Courage Movement in this village which willaddress and support job creation and victims of HIV/AIDS. Themovement will encourages dialogue around critical social issueswithin communities and focuses on building capacity at a grassrootslevel,” he said.

Merafe Resources says that rising costs were making it increasingly difficult for SouthAfrican ferrochrome producers to stay competitive.

CEO Stuart Elliot told jounalists at the company’s results presentation inJohannesburg, that the South African mining industry was being pressured from allsides. Labour has been demanding wage increases above inflation for the past fiveyears, while electricity prices also grew by 75% over the past three years.

The mining industry also had to bear an additional royalty tax, and a potentialcarbon tax could be the last blow for energy-intensive companies, such asferrochrome producers.

For the six months ended June 30, Merafe’s costs climbed by 16% to R82 perpound, of which, electricity made up about 17%.

Elliot said that the company would implement a number of projects over the nextthree years to mitigate certain cost pressures.

In this regard he mentioned the Lion 2 smelter complex, a joint venture withXstrata, with a capacity of 360 000 t of ferrochrome. This project would seecompletion in 2013 if everything goes as planned. He noted that the Lion site inSteelpoort also made provision for a third Lion plant, but added that plans were stillsome way off.

Elliot said that all the new projects would mainly be funded through cash generatedby the company’s operations, and debt. “We will not be going to the markets for arights issue.”

Elliot noted that one of the major challenges facing South African ferrochromeproducers was the export of raw chrome ore to especially China.Of the eight-milliontons of chrome ore imported by China last year, 3.1-million was sourced from SouthAfrica.

This meant that China, which does not have any of its own chrome ore sources, was positioning itself as one of the lower-cost ferrochrome producers through theimport of cheap ore from South Africa.

“Ultimately, South Africa, who produces about 45% of the world’s ferrochrome, willlose its position in the world market, which will inevitably lead to job losses and lessinvestment in the country.”

He said South Africa should consider export duties and other controls to stop asurge in chrome ore sales to China so local ferrochrome makers could staycompetitive, saying local producers of ferrochrome had hired independent consultantsto investigate the industry.

A report with proposals to control exports would be submitted to the governmentby next month.

Merafe said that stainless steel production was expected to grow by 6% during2011, equating to an increase of 5% in the world consumption of ferrochrome, including a 14% increase in demand for ferrochrome from China.

Stainless steel production was expected to continue to grow at around 5% a yearin the medium term, driven mainly by demand from China.

‘Klapped’

Platinum Gazette staff member, Beánnla Celliers, accidently came into the line of fire (shetook the photograph of fleeing people on the right) on Monday when the Police fired rubberbullets at a group of people who blocked the Polokwane road (top photograph by DocMarebane) just on the other side of the river on the road to Polokwane from Burgersfort. She was visiting Lehlaba, Master in Motor Parts, one of the newspaper’s clients when thetrouble started. What could be determined is that the people want to settle next to the river, but a dispute arose about the ownership of the land. Some of the people on the sceneclaimed on Wendesday, when they were still cleaning the land for settlement, that it is nottribal land, and it is also not owned by the municipality. According to them the Police shot atthem on Monday because of a ‘misunderstanding’ when they burned tyres in the road.Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM)was one of the proud sponsors of theWildevy 4x4 Family Day. ECM sponsoredobstacle number two on the 4x4 track, apotjie team (manned by ECM Management)and a paramedic stand in partnership withEMCARE. The medical team was availableon site in case any serious incidents wouldoccur and fortunately there were no injuries. The one major factor that they had to dealwith was sunburn and luckily the medicswere ready for “sunburn victims”!At the obstacle, the ECM team decided togo with a safety theme, seeing that ZEROHARM is one of the core values of ECM.Due to the layout of the obstacle, trafficcontrol was important. Therefore the teamalso had to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The team set up safe walkways wherespectators could watch the excitementwithout getting trampled. ECM issued all the

teams that participated with a pair ofgumboots for their co-drivers. This wouldhelp them walk around safely when theyinspect the routes they needed to travel. Atthe point, they were also issued with bumperstickers with safety slogans such as “Hangup and drive safely” and “If you can readthis, you are too close”. In a mining set up,safety and housekeeping goes hand inhand. As a result, the team laid a floor ofslag to help manage the dust factor. Toensure their own safety, the team wore theirPPE and bright orange shirts to enhancetheir visibility. It was a day to remember, the ECM team,as well as the spectators had lots of fun! Allthe hard work that was put into it was not invain. The ECM team walked away with theprize for the best point for 2011! Well doneECM! (Photograph and information: Davidavan der Walt).

This week Mineral Resources Minister SusanShabangu told the audience at a mine-nationalisation forum in Johannesburg thatinstead of asking whether South Africa willnationalise its mines, the question should behow to deal with the country’s “evil triplets” -poverty, inequality and unemployment. She said that the country was debating anissue that will only culminate in Mangaung atthe end of next year. “I am aware that theinvestors, and equally members andsupporters of the ANC who want to seeinvestments and jobs in the mining industry, will be disappointed because they want clarityand certainty,” she said. She added thatinvestors can in the mean time take comfortin the fact the current government policy ofnon-nationalisation is clear. She told the group that mines were not doing“enough” to develop the communities near tothem and also addressed the big salary gapbetween management and workers. The facilitator of the proceedings at theevent, Bruce Whitfield asked her how muchdoes she think is “enough” as private-sectormines are already paying taxes, royalties andare assisting communities. The mining industry’s profits are underpressure as costs climb and apart fromroyalty tax a potential carbon tax is loomingwhile electricity prices soared by 75% overthe past five years.Shabangu said that miners should ensurethat appropriate bursaries and scholarshipsare offered to ensure that people gain theskills needed in the mining environment.A recent report by te National PlanningCommission showed that only 41% of SouthAfricans are economically active and two-thirds of South Africa’s enemployed arebelow the age of 35.We asked readers what they think aboutShabangu’s recommended shift in focus fromnationalisation to the “evil triplets” andwhether they think mines in our area aredoing enough?More than one reader declined to comment, fearing divided loyalty as they are paid-upmembers of the ANC Youth League but arealso employees at local mines.

Mr Percy Aphane said: “Creating jobsmust be a priority. Mines are not doingenough. They must create more jobs forpeople. They must also help communitieswith things such as clothes and foodbecause the people are poor”.

Mr Nicholas Mabunela said: “Shabangu isright and the mines are not doing enough. The local people have the knowledge forcertain jobs, but they don’t get the work. Themines must also help with roads, schoolsand clinics. The people are suffering”.

Mnr.

Mr Robert Tibane said: “There is no jobsin this country. The mines must do morein the communities. They must createmore jobs then they don’t have to giveanything else - it is enough”.

Mr Victor Mndebele said: “She does havea point. If you look at it: if they can comeup with a plan to create jobs for thepeople it will be great. The unemploymentrate is too high in South Africa. Themines need to do more. The communitiesmust benefit from more jobs and alsothrough investment on their land”.

Ms Pontsho Molabe said: “I thinknationalisation will just cause trouble. It willbe a disaster. The mines are trying. I wasone of the students who were sponsored tostudy and now I am working for them. I ama geologist. Maybe they can do more, butthey are already trying to assist. The localpeople should also commit to try and geteducated. The people must from their sidetry to be the best and right candidates forjobs and bursaries”.

Mr Mpho Mnisi said: “The mines aretrying to do something. The problem isthat from the communities there areindividuals who are greedy. If the minesgive money and it is used to benefit all, then there won’t be such a crisis. Thegreedy ones want everything forthemselves and then it is not to thebenefit of the community. The mines tryto do something but the individuals areoften the problem. The minister was rightwith what she said. Instead of nationalisewe must try to create jobs”.

Right: Mr Moshe Botopela said: “I believethat they should focus on developmentand upliftment of communities becauseeven if they nationalise the mines, whowill benefit? The local mines could domuch better that they are doing already.Maybe the communities themselvesshould also give a commitment to try anduplift themselves. It is heartbreaking toknow who is destroying our communities, but we keep mum. We should clean ourhouse and be in a better state to assistmines with development. We need toshow commitment that the little we’vegot, we can take care of”.

Mnr. Johan Coetzee sê: “Hulle moeteerder kyk na werkskepping as nanasionalisering van die myne. Ek glo hierby ons doen die myne baie. Dit is moeilikom te sê wat is genoeg”.

Me. Marianie Kleynhans en me. Dons Aldrich sê: “Die myne doen baie in hierdie area, veral vir die skole. Hulle help almal, nie net sekeres nie. Nasionalisering sal eerderwerkloosheid veroorsaak. Al die geld wat aan debatte uitgegee word moet eerder virdie versorging van honger kinders gaan”.

Mnr. Johan Grobler en mnr. Phillip Grobler sê: “Sy is reg, die fokus moet anders wees.Die myne moet sorg vir behuising vir almal dan sal hulle genoeg gedoen het”.

Are the mines doing enough?

“Gari Dombo, managing director ofAlexander Forbes Insurance, warnsthat motorists should always call theinsurer themselves or have a trustedperson do this for them.Dombo says if an unscrupulous towoperator got hold of your vehicle,

"you will find yourself in for an expensive and unpleasant ride".They charge unreasonable amounts for towing, and excep-tionally high storage fees if they do not get the job. Phoneyour insurer and they will appoint a reputable towing com-pany to take your vehicle directly to a reputable panelbeater. Some insurers will not pay for towing and storage if it is notarranged by them or through their own accidenthelpline."Dombo says some truck operators attempted to hitchup a vehicle under the pretence of pulling the vehicle out ofthe way of traffic. Do not allow this to happen as, particularlyin cases of injury, vehicles should not be moved until the po-lice arrive. If an unauthorised tow truck operator hasattached your vehicle, "you arefully within your rights torequest the police to havethe vehicle released on theaccident scene".(From: Sowetan Live).
