Application notes

MODAN R (removable compartments) and MODAN W (withdrawable

units) as typical variants for the manufacturing and processing indu-

stries

The modern drawer-unit and removablecompartment engineering ensures thehighest levels of flexibility and availabili-ty. Busbar areas, component/functionalareas and coupling areas are separatedfrom each other. Internal partitioning toForm 4b is possible. Adaption of theswitchgear system to changed opera-ting conditions is easy to implementwithout having to shutdown a section. The functional units can be easilyexchanged and extended when live upto a current of 630 A. All drawer-unitsare equipped with an operating, testand disconnected position. User opera-ting faults are thus eliminated guarante-eing personnel safety and system pro-tection. Integral protection systemsreduce the level of system downtimesto an absolute minimum. For aggressive and sulphurous atmos-phere the main contacts can be gold-plated.

PROFIBUS fieldbus communication

01/10 TB46-015E

1. Simple installation

With installation over multiple sections, a repeater is applied afterthe maximum number of users per section is achieved and a bustermination resistor is also used at the end of the segment.

2. Enhanced interference immunity

In order to limit bus interference to the affected section, eachMODAN W section receives a repeater and a bus termina-

tion. Up to 9 repeaters can be connected in series.

3. Usage in EMC critical environments

Optical-fibre converters are used in order to limit EMCinfluence in the entire network or to bridge large distancesbetween subnetworks (3 km and more). They convert thebus signal from electrical PROFIBUS interfaces (RS485) to

optical PROFIBUS interfaces and vice versa. The optical-fibreconverters can be implemented with line-based, star-basedor ring-based topologies. Redundant connections are alsoallowed.

Conventional arc-fault protection in MODAN system

01/10 TB46-015E

- The most important aim should beto prevent arcs from occurring by appropriate construction measu-res, or to limit their duration.

- In the event that a fault results in an arc in the switchgear assembly, the highest possible degree of

protection for personnel must be aimed for.

Aims of arc fault protection to IEC 60439-1 Section 7.5.1

Conventional arc fault protection

Conventional arc fault protection mea-sures prevent the occurrence of arcfaults.

Internal separation by means of parti-tions and covers up to Form 4b, provideprotection against electric shock toIP30 degree of protection.

Arc-fault protection with ARCON® in MODAN system

01/10 TB46-015E

The use of the ARCON arc-fault pro-

tection system implements the hig-hest level of protection for personnel

and systems currently available. TheARCON arc-fault protection system hasthe task of limiting the effects and

energy of the resulting arc-fault andquenching the ard. Very fast shutdowntimes are achieved.

Measures for extended arc-fault protection in the MODAN switchgear system

Secondary arc-fault protection measures limit the effects

VdS (German insurance association) recognised ard-fault protection system

Description of function ARCON®

The arc fault protection system

ARCON consists of light and currentsensors, the electronic evaluation unitsand the quenching device.

The ARCON light sensors, based onfibre optic cables, allow the main bus-bars and dropper bars as well as busbarconnections and cable connectionsystems over the entire length, to bemonitored.

One ligth sensor is required on everymain busbar system for each section.

The arc current is monitored by currenttransformers placed before every inco-ming circuit-breaker. Conventional C.T.swith optional 1 A or 5 A secondary cur-rents are used.

In case of an arc fault the emitted lightand the arc current is monitored andevaluated by the arc fault protectionsystem ARCON. The quenching deviceand the incoming circuit-breaker areactivated.

The ARCON shorts the arc fault effec-ted main busbar system inside 2 msand takes the destructive energy of thearc. The arc fault is quenched.

The three phase short-circuit caused bythe quenching device is switched off bythe incoming circuit-breaker. All inco-ming circuit-breakers are, as back-up,tripped out.

ARCON® arc-fault protection

system

The effects of an arc remain limited tothe foot points of the arc. The system isready for operation after the cause ofthe fault has been eliminated and thequenching device has been exchanged.

Personnel protection which is stipula-ted by EN 60439-1 supplement 2*VDE0660 part 500 (03/2001) is achieved bythe installation of the ARCON arc faultprotection system, which is comprisedof sensors, evaluation unit and quen-ching device.

System function protection

The term system function protectionoriginates from Moeller. System func-

tion protection means that the switch-gear system can be immediately reope-rated after it has shutdown (arc-quen-ched) due to an arc-fault after the causeof the arc-fault has been eliminated.Exchange of distribution system parts, components and equipment in theswitchgear power section resultingfrom the effect of an arc-fault is notnecessary. Complete functional end-urance of all system parts and equip-ment is achieved.

Test standard

ARC-EM Electronic evaluation unit; connection of up to max. 16 diffe-ring slaves via a bus cable (max. 100 m). A current transfor-mer set can be directly connected to the master. Supply voltage 48 - 265 V AC/DC 50/60 Hz. This system must be supplied with a secure supply voltage (UPS or a power supply which is independent of the supply voltage). The ARC-EM evaluation unit can monitor one or two busbar sections. In the event of an arc-fault, the evaluation unit sends the quenching signal to the ARC-AT quenching device and the switch-off signal to the circuit-breaker. The device should be door mounted.

ARC-AT The quenching device should be installed in the direct vicinity of the incoming circuit-breaker. In the event of an arc-fault, the ARC-AT quenching device produces a three pole dead short circuit parallel to the source of the fault. The peak arc voltage required to form the arc on the busbar drops below the required level and the arc is quenched. The three pole short-circuit created by the quenching device will be recognized by the circuit-breaker.

Type-tested assemblies to IEC/EN 60439-1

01/10 TB46-015E

The safety standard for low-

voltage switchgear combina-

tions

The requirement placed on low-voltageswitchgear in respect of heat dissipa-tion, higher packing densities, control ofhigh short-circuits and insulation capaci-ty have increased considerably over thelast few years.

Rated current of up to 6000 A and highshort-circuit ratings with rated short-time withstand currents up to 100 kAare no longer unusual.

The compact design, not to mentionthe integration of electronic compo-nents into supply networks subject topowerful harmonics, requires preciserating and testing of the switchgearassembly.

Only switchgear assemblies whichcomply with current standards fulfiltoday’s safety regulations.

Current standars are:

IEC/EN 60439-1, VDE 0660 part 500;

Low-voltage switchgear combinations

Type-tested and partially type-testedassemblies

These standards are identical in

terms of content they show two

options for the manufacturing of

switchgear assemblies:

- Type-tested assembly (TTA)- Partially type-tested assemblies

Type-tested assembly (TTA)

In assemblies of this sort, all compo-nents are type-tested separately and intheir functional state, including all elec-trical and mechanical connections.

Where other devices are used for swit-ching and protection, it is a requirementthat the technical data are at least thesame or better (argument by analogy).

Partially type-tested assemblies

Both type-tested and non type-testedcomponents are comprised in this typeof assembly. Non-type-tested compo-nents must be based on type-testedones.

Proof required of adherence to standards

Requirements Proof of TTA produced by Proof of PTTA produced by

1. Temperature-rise limit Test Test or extrapolation

2. Insulation resistance Test Test

3. Short-circuit rating Test Test or extrapolation

4. Efficiency of protective conductor Test Test

5. Clearance and creepage distances Test Test

6. Mechanical function Test Test

7. IP degree of protection Test Test

For type-tested assemblies, all proof isproduced by testing.

With partially type-tested assemblies, there are two exceptions:

a) Proof of compliance with temperatu-re-rise limits. For switchgear with a maximum input current of 3150 A, this proof can also be provided by means of extrapolation where calcu-lation is done in accordance with DIN VDE 0660 part 507.

b) Proof of the short-circuit rating is not required for switchgear assemblies which are protected by a current-limi-ting protective device and where the let-through current < 15 kA.

Where an extrapolation or calculation toDIN VDE 0660 part 509 is necessary, this is always based on values derivedfrom type-tested busbar systems.

Internal partitioning

01/10 TB46-015E

Forms of internal partitioning

to IEC/EN 60439-1

Low-voltage switchgear assemblies canbe divided by means of partitions orbarriers into seperate compartments orenclosed protected spaces. The aim offorming seperate compartments orenclosed protected space which con-tain the funtional units is:

Form 1

Possible with MODAN P, R, W and G

- No internal separation

Form 2a

Possible with MODAN P, R, W and Gwith Form 2b

- Separation of busbars from the functional units

- The terminals of external conductors do not need to be separated from oneanother.

Form 2b

Possible with MODAN P, R, W and G

- Separation of busbars from the functional units

- The terminals for external conductors do not need to be separated from the busbars

- Protection against direct contact with hazardous parts belonging to the functional unit (degree of protection must be at least IP XXB).

- Limitation of possibility of fault arc occurrence.

- Protection against the passage of solid foreign bodies from one functio-nal unit into an adjacent one (degree of protection shall be at least IP 2X).

Typical forms of internal separation aredifferentiated depending on how thecompartment or subsection is construc-ted:

- Internal partitioning between busbars and functional units as well as separation of functional units from one another

- The terminals of external conductors do not need to be separated from one another.

Form 3b

Possible with MODAN P, R1) and W

- Separation ot the terminals for external conductors from functional units, but not from one another

- The terminals for external conductors do not need to be separated from the busbars

Form 4a

Possible with MODAN P, and R1)

- Internal separation between busbarsand functional units as well as functional units from each another, including the terminals for external conductors which are an integral part of the functional unit

- Terminals for external conductors which are an integral part of the functional unit

Form 4b

Possible with MODAN P and R1)

- Internal separation between busbars and functional units as well as functional units from each another, including the terminals for external conductors which are an integral part of the functional unit

- Terminals for external conductors which are not an integral part of the functional unit, which however are in an individual, separate, enclosed protected space or compartment.

The form of separation and higherdegrees of protection (where greaterthan IP2X or IPXX B) shall be agreedbetween the manufacturer and the enduser. Internal separation is used for theprotection of personnel and of thesystem where work is being carried outon the switchgear assembly, and where

for operational reasons, the switchgearassembly cannot be switched off.Depending on operational require-ments, the distribution sections canoptimally be designed with variousForms of separation. Distribution sec-tions, which permit straightforwardremoval of functional units (such as

those with withdrawable modules), areequipped as standard with a higherform of separation, such as Form 3b,for example. Separation in accordancewith Form 2b, i.e. separation betweenbusbars and functional units, is recom-mended in every case.

Rated values

01/10 TB46-015E

Rated values

Rated values in accordance withIEC/EN 61439-1 are specified by manu-facturers of low-voltage switchgear andcontrolgear assemblies. These ratedvalues apply for specified operatingconditions are characterize the applica-tion of the switchgear assembly. Therated values must be the basis for coor-dination of the equipment and/or forthe switchgear assembly.

Rated short-time withstand current (Icw)

IEC/EN 61439-1; 3.8.9.3, 5.3.5

As r.m.s. value of the short-circuit cur-rent, the rated short-time withstandcurrent characterizes the thermalstrength of a circuit in a switchgearassembly during short-time loading. Therated short-time withstand current isnormally calculated for a duration of 1s;time values other than this must bespecified. Rated short-time withstandcurrent ist stated for the distribution-and/or main busbars of a switchgearassembly.

Rated peak withstand current(Ipk)

IEC/EN 61439-1; 3.8.9.2, 5.3.4

As peak value of the short-circuit cur-rent, the rated peak withstand currentcharacterizes the dynamic strength of acircuit in a switchgear assembly. As arule, the rated peak withstand currentis stated for the distribution- and mainbusbars of a switchgear assembly.

Rated conditional short-circuitcurrent (Icc)

IEC/EN 60439-1; 3.8.9.4, 5.3.6

The rated conditional short-circuit cur-rent corresponds to the prospectiveshort-circuit current which a circuit wit-hin a switchgear assembly, protectedby a short-circuit protective mechanism, can carry without damage (for a certaintime). The rated conditional short-circuitcurrent is therefore indicated for out-goers and/or incomers within circuit-breakers, for example.

Rated impulse withstand voltage(Uimp)

IEC/EN 60947-1; 4.3.1.3

Measures for the stability of the clea-rances within a switching device whendealing with transient overvoltages. Byusing suitable switchgear, it can beensured that no overvoltages from thesupply network in which they are instal-led can be transferred to de-energizedparts of the system.

Rated current (In) (of a circuit-breaker)

IEC/EN 60947-2; 4.3.2.3

Current which for circuit breakers is thesame as rated uninterrupted currentand conventional free-air thermal cur-rent.

→ Rated uninterrupted current

Rated control voltage (Uc)

IEC/EN 60947-1; 4.5.1

Voltag which is applied at the actuatingmake contact in a control circuit. It candeviate from the rated control voltagedue to transformers or resistance’s inthe switching circuit.

Rated ultimate short-circuitbreaking capacity (Icu)

IEC/EN 60947-2; 4.3.5.2.1

Maximum short-circuit current which acircuit-breaker can interrupt (Test O - CO). Following short-circuitbreaking, the circuit-breaker is able totrip in the event of an overload withincreased tolerances.

Rated service short-circuitbreaking capacity (Ics)

The short-circuit current-dependantrated operational voltage which a circu-it-breaker is able to interrupt repeatedly(Test O - CO - CO). Following short-cir-cuit breaking, the circuit-breaker is ableto carry the rated current again withincreased self-heating, and to trip out inthe event of overload.

→ Rated uninterrupted current; rated operational voltage

Rated operational power

IEC/EN 60947-1; 4.3.2.3

Motor rating which a switching devicecan switch at the associated rated ope-rational voltage in accordance with theutilization category, for example contac-tor with utilization category AC-3: 37kW at 400 V.

Rated operational voltage (Ue)

IEC/EN 60947-1; 4.3.1.1

Voltage to which the characteristicvalues of a switching device are refer-red. The highest rated operational volta-ge must on no account be higher thanthe rated insulation voltage.

IEC/EN 60947-1; 2.5.29

→ Conditional rated shor-circuitcurrent (Iq)

Dimensioning of low-voltageswitchgear system combinations

When rating switchgear assemblieswith regard to short-circuit withstandstrength, the rated short-circuit valuesmust be compared with the short-circu-it currents of the incoming power sup-ply. The switchgear assembly must berated for the short-circuit load whichcan occur. The busbars must resist thethermal and dynamic load of the short-circuit current which may flow in them(such as, via a circuit-breaker on theincoming side, and for a limited time). To facilitate rating, only the rated valuesof the switchgear assembly accordingto the following scheme are used. The let-through characteristics of theshort-circuit protective device and thedamping effect of the connection bet-ween the transformer and the switch-gear assembly are thus disregarded.

Rated short-time withstand current Icw > transformer short-circuit current I"k

and

Rated peak withstand current Ipk > peak short-circuit current ip

Where a short-circuit protective deviceleads to a restriction in the duration ofthe short-circuit, a rated short-timewithstand current can be applied for acorresponding length of time. Example:incoming circuit-breaker disconnectsshort-circuit after 40 ms; an establishedrated short-time withstand currentvalue for 100 ms is compared withtransformer short-circuit current forrating purposes. The rated operationalvoltage Ue must be the same or grea-ter than the transformer voltage.

Transformator Rated current In:

IN = k x SNT

Transformator short-circuit current I"k:

I"k = IN x 100/uk%Peak short-circuit current ip:

ip = n x I"k

n = 2,2 at I > 50 kAn = 2,1 at 20 kA < I < 50 kA

The procedure described above forrating the switchgear assembly refersprimarily to the rating of main busbarsystems. Rating of the distribution bus-bar systems and/or of all connectionsfrom the main busbar to the incomingside of function units, need only berated for the reduced short-circuit loadwhich may occur on the outgoing sideof the short circuit protective device forthe function units. It is a prerequisitethat, under normal operating conditions,a short-circuit is not expected to occuron these distribution busbars or con-nections.

Example:The transformer short-circuit current I"k= 90 kA, the selected main busbarshave a rated short-time-withstand cur-rent Icw of 100 kA, however the distri-bution busbars have a rated short-timewithstand current Icw of only 65 kA(because the circuit-breaker for the out-goer from the distribution busbar, thanks to its current-limiting effect, hasreduced the short-circuit load).

Operation and maintenance gangways within the switchgear combinations

The minimum width for operation andmaintenance gangways for switchgearcombinations is 700 mm, the minimum

gangway height under panelling is 2000 mm. When a lifting trolley is to beused to exchange circuit-breakers the

gangway width should be designed tothe dimensions of the lifting trolley.

The doors of the switchgear combina-tion should be arranged so that theyclose in the direction of the emergencyescape route. With a different

assignment, a free access clearance of 500 mm must remain. If switchgearcombinations are installed oppositeeach other, it is not necessary to

consider that doors on both sides areopened simultaneously.
