Introduction

The idea of the placement and the “context is half the work” is to take an artist out of there usual environ-ment and place them somwhere they would not usualy work. this then gives the artest a inside look into the organisation and benifits them with a new perspective. for the majority of my placement i was just talking to clients and moving work as well as manning the galery. towards the end of the placemnt i decided to document a poster art show and music perfor-mance at the gallery and combine the placemnt work with my photography.

My placement was at Underdog Art Company galley in old kent road in south London. Underdog Art Company is an online gallery working with established, up and coming artists and photog-raphers. It sells and produce’s original and limited edition reproduction art. The gallery was not on our list of possible placements, However I found the gallery and spoke to the owner in person. I explaned I am a photography student and freelance artist and that I was looking for an internship or placement. The owner asked to see my portfolio and I showed him using the website flicker and my own website. He then offered me a position and explaned my dutys. My Jobs in the gallery were varied. Sometimes I looked after the space while the owner picked up sup-plys. I also helped hang the work and take down. I also helped with photo editing and maintaining the website and making a twitter website and myspace for the gallery.

My project was to document a poster art show, In addition to the displaying of poster art there was also musical performances from a number of bands.

I gained a large number of transferable skills from hanging work as well as the day to day running of a gallery, talking to clients and artists. In addition I learnt more about photoediting and website building.

cover letter

For my placement at Underdog art company i did not require a cover letter as i spoke to the owner directly to confirm my placement. Howere i will include a example of a cover letter i used when applly-ing for a different placement. I will also incude in this section some of the comunications via email i had with my placemnt provider.

Hello Dougald my name is James Ide and I’m one of the second year photography students you came and spoke to just over a week ago. I was very interested in the school of everything as I myself want to become a photog-raphy teacher. I would love to join your creative team and document the staff and students of school of everything. The first thing I would suggest would be to put some more images on your homepage (not too many as I like the simple layout but the odd bit of portrait and or abstract photography could brighten it up slightly. Secondly I thought the same thing about interviewing students and teachers as well as shooting some videos to promote the diversity and ideas of school of everything. also I would love to interview your staff and talk to them about their ideas for school of everything while throwing in some complimentary face shots for the page. In addition I thought that maybe if it is within budget to create an event to promote school of everything with teachers coming down and maybe have a stall or area to talk about what they do. Like a convention or fair but of course that would require a small team of photographers willing to document the event. Also you could have my skills on standby for any other corporate events. And finally just some editorial style shots ranging in photographic genre to promote the site as I am quite capable with photo manipulation. I hope some of those idea interest you or are useful I hope to hear from you and my contact details are bellow.

These are some pictures of the posters used to advertise the poster show. One of my jobs was to pick up these from the printers and distribute them in various colleges and universitys as well as sticking them in shops and around.

III- Use of social media

I Used several forms of online social meda. Firstly I used facebook to comunicate ideas with the gallery owner and some of the bands. Seondly i used Twitter to keep paula up to date with what i was doing and as a note to myself. Also i set up a twitter account for the underdog gallery and posted updates about up and coming shows. I used several photosharing sites such as facebook, carbonmade and deviant art to host some of my pic-tures and to get feedback from other artists.
