The department of mechanical engineering at the Indian
Institute of technology Guwahati, established in 1995 , has
been recognized world over for excellence in research and
academics. Being one of the oldest and largest department in
the institute, it is continuously striving to improve the quality
of education, academics, industry oriented research as well as
consultancy work with service to society.
Academic course work and projects are designed to endow
students with the ability to apply knowledge of science
mathematics and engineering, and the capability to work
effectively in multidisciplinary teams, providing leadership
and technical expertise. With a solid grounding in the
principles and practice of mechanical engineering, our students
are ready to engage in ethical approaches to engineering with
concern of society and the environment.

In addition to these an intellectually vibrant atmosphere in the department has results in innumerable research publications in
reputed international journals. During the year 2011 the number was 86 but in the next academic year, in 2012 the number
increased to 127,in 2013 it was 107 and in 2014 the number increased to 141. Faculties of the department are also involved in a
plethora of consultancy projects funded by industries based both in India and abroad.
Students Activity
Association of IIT Guwahati, aims to play a pivotal
role in the development of students as engineers by

activities MESA aims to be a platform for all the
students of IIT Guwahati in general and particularly of
the students of Mechanical Engineering department.
MESA runs an active blog, containing posts about

SEISMECH:
Engineering Student Association (MESA), IIT
Guwahati. It is conceptualized to develop and
strengthen the engineering spirit of the students of IIT
Guwahati and other North-East colleges. Seismech ‘15
had some of the most eye-catching events including
talks on the current issues of concern by the best minds
Mr. Pranab Bora (Editor, “T e Tele ap ”), Dr.
Ravikumar Bhaskaran (Principal QIP Coordinator,
IITKgp), Dr. Rishi Raj (Alumnus, IITG), Dr. Baldev Raj
(Padma Shri Awardee). A workshop on 3-D Printing
was organised with many other exciting events like
panel discussion, IDP, Solidworks-CAD contest, etc.
Students Activity:
SAE.
• Team Srijan (a group of B.Tech. 2nd and 3rd year
from ME department) participated in BAJA
SAEINDIA 2012. They cleared the Virtual Round
and fabricated IITG’ first All Terrain Four
Wheeled Vehicle.
SAENIS Efficycle, and successfully manufactured
hybrid recumbent tricycles, in 2013 and 2014. In
the latest edition, the team finished 13th overall and
6th in the dynamics events.
• Team Evolution also took part in SUPRA SAE for
the first time which is a competition to design and
fabricate a Formula 1 styled racing car. The team
came 30th overall in the Virtual Round and
successfully fabricated a racing car using sound
engineering techniques.
