Place: A Unique Location
Terms/Concepts• Toponym• Situation• Site
Place• Location is the position that
something occupies on Earth• Location can be described using
place names, situation, and site
Place Names• The easiest way to describe a place
on earth is by referring to its place name– Toponym- the name given to a place on
Earth
Situation• Situation- the location of a place
relative to other places– Ex. “It’s down past the courthouse,
beside the large elm tree.”• Helps us to understand the
importance of something
Site• Site- the physical character of a
place– Include: climate, water sources,
topography, soil, vegetation, latitude, and elevation• The combination of these features gives
each place a distinctive character– Humans have the ability to modify the
characteristics of a site.
