With vision and sensitivity, the owners transformed this once

derelict Georgian home

THIS IMAGE Rachel and Henry like to fuse antiques with modern day furniture; their kitchen table is from local specialists in contemporary design Twentytwentyone (twentytwentyone.com) RIGHT Local painter and decorator Bryony Christie used six layers of discontinued paint found on eBay on the front door to achieve its lacquered finish. The door furniture was from Lassco (lassco.co.uk)

I t takes more than a dash of courage to trade what Rachel Short describes as ‘the best home we’d ever lived in’, for a derelict terraced house that had formerly been a squat – not least as that perfect home was

the result of a long restoration. In 2001, however, ten years aer buying their former London home, Rachel saw the very rst auction sign go up along the desirable, tree-lined terrace of Georgian houses in Cross Street, Islington and knew she had to view the property. ‘I’d said for years that I’d love to live in this particular street; it has got a real feel of community, a broad range of shops and residential homes and feels buzzy,’ she enthuses.

Her busy partner Henry was unable to make any of the viewing slots, but Rachel was not deterred by the barricading and grilles over the front door and windows, and saw it alone. She also had the vision to see the potential of the house, as whilst it was completely uninhabitable, there were many original features, such as the

Drawing inspiration from the cabinets of curiosities put together by collectors from the 16th to 18th centuries, Art of the Curious is a collaborative exhibition, showing a selection of natural and

artistic items that celebrate the bizarre and the beautiful. Exhibits will range from anatomical

models of beetles to 17th-century china or glasses. The exhibition runs from 2-20 October at Colnaghi

gallery, 15 Old Bond Street, London. Admission is free. (020 7491 7408; colnaghi.co.uk).

Must-see exhibition

What is your favourite find?I have far too many favourite finds to pick only one, but my most recent discovery was about a month ago, when a client from the south east asked me to sell several items for them. One piece was a 19th-century hardwood and ebonised four-fold screen (right), with the most amazing original silk needlework. The client had stored it in their loft for the past 20 years, thinking that it had no real value, but I sold it at auction, with the phone lines from China red hot, for £31,000.

from Rose & Grey. Made from vintage leather with linen sides, it also has a durable hardwood frame and costs

£555. (01925 761147; roseandgrey.co.uk).

If you could have one item to keep at home, which would it be? One of my passions is vintage cars and an object I’d never sell would be a 1920s Lalique car mascot. These pieces were made in limited editions and accessorised the finest cars of the day, from Rolls Royces to Bugattis. Sadly, I can’t aord the right car to match one, so if I had one, it would just have to sit on my desk at home.

Grey combined with muted orange forms the basis for a classic living room. Inspired more by the author Arthur Conan Doyle’s Scottish roots than his sleuth hero, this room teams warm tartan prints with tactile tweed and linen. A rich oriental rug topped with a majestic leather trunk hints at his writings of Holmes’s travels to the east, while a London map on the mantelpiece brings the look back home.

LEGACY Ned and Clare Mersey are continuing the evolution of the historic gardens at Bignor Park while looking to the future

The familyGardens

Ned Bigham, Viscount Mersey, and his wife Clare moved to Bignor Park in Sussex with their two young daughters in 2010, aer Ned took on the running of the estate following

the death of his father in 2006. Home to the Bigham family since 1926, this historic 1,200 acre estate comes with both pleasures and great responsibilities. e Regency house that sits imposingly in the grounds was built in 1826 by the then owner, John Hawkins, but the history of the park dates back to medieval times, when it was used to fatten deer for the Arundel Estate.

e essence of the parkland layout, created by renowned landscape designer and artist William

Sawrey Gilpin in the 1820s, remains and the formal gardens by the house have much the same structure as depicted in photos from the end of the 19th century. With wonderful memories from childhood, Ned has wholeheartedly taken on the custodianship of Bignor Park, to develop it for future generations to come. ‘I fell in love with the place from an early age and above all want to keep it going. Once there was a sense of the country gentleman and his estate; times have changed and diversication is needed, but we want to keep the garden looking very special,’ he explains.

Elements of the past are combined with new planting and redesign. Ned’s father was passionate about planting trees and now in turn Ned, with

1 Measure the height and circumference of your lampshade and select a good area of pattern on the wallpaper on which to pencil the rectangular run, using a ruler. Cut neatly, leaving an overhang of 2cm on all sides. Bear in mind that whether you want to use your lampshade for a lamp or a pendant light, will aect which

is the ‘right way up’, due to the position of the fixings inside.

2 Using a paint brush, apply glue to the exterior of the lampshade and the back of the wallpaper, concentrating on the edges. Carefully position the wallpaper, making sure it is evenly placed before applying firmer pressure. Fold the excess paper over the edges and press and hold in place – you may find you need to apply more glue.

3 Once dry, you can apply your trimming. We chose a pompom edge to complement the wallpaper colours. Using the circumference measurement, cut to size and ax with glue along the bottom edge, ensuring a straight line parallel with the bottom of the shade.

Then on 28 November, Chorley’s is selling o a collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century toys, dolls and games. Below is a beautifully furnished early Victorian doll’s house, reflecting 1850s interiors; it is estimated to sell for £10,000-15,000. (01452 344499; simonchorley.com).

plaster casts also fit the mould: pieces of classical sculpture, feet and hands, work well dotted with black and white engravings.

This wonderful French corbel (right) was a recent purchase in a French brocante. At 58cm and only 30 euros, it was a rather lucky buy!
