Why Kelly Rowland? She is a successful Female artist in the music industry, with her music varying from contemporary music to R&B. Kelly Rowland covers topics such as her "deeply personal relationship issues" in her songs ,Most of the lyrical themes speak of love and life experiences. When we carried out our audience research interview, most people said ,in a Kelly

Rowland music video they would expect to see a music video where she is telling a story or an emotional music video.

Kelly Rowland as my choice of Artist

Lets do this “Dirty Laundry”The song dirty laundry is from Kelly’s album ‘Talk a good game’.This song has a more emotional meaning than just doing dirty laundry .The lyrics talk about her

abusive relationship and being in the dark when she left destinies child while her sister ‘Beyonce’ was in the spotlight.

Initial IdeasThese were our initial ideas for the track dirty laundry. However after analysing the lyrics properly, we decided to make our video more subtle .Our music video will have1.Choreography2.Use of lip syncing3.narrative.

We have decided to use and develop conventions of an R&B video rather than challenge it

Page 6: Pitch for ‘dirty laundry’

This is the sequence of steps and movements in dance or figure skating, especially in a ballet or other staged dance.

Most R&B music videos have some kind of choreography in it usually done by female dancers dressed in skimpy outfits, we are going to use this idea and develop it.

We have decided to add a bit of choreography to our music video this will be done by two female dancers. This is done to balance out the narrative and lip syncing it is important we add choreography to our music video as the music video may end

up looking like a short movie! We have been watching a variety of shots and styles of dancing which has influenced our decisions from YouTube clips.

We have also considered the style of dance for example ballet like dance rather than break dancing.

Choreography

(of an actor or singer) move the lips silently in synchronization with a pre-recorded soundtrack.

This is an important part of any genre of music videos ,although this excludes some music videos where there are no performers.

However our main character ‘Kelly’ will be centre of attention therefore it is important to make it realistic. Lip syncing will also add to the sad atmosphere making the audience connect more.

We decided that most of the verses will be lip synced however there will also be lip syncing during the narrative.

Lip syncing

NarrativeA spoken or written account of connected events; a story.Narratives are seen quite a lot in R&B music videos normally with the

same storylines . e.g. men cheating on women or narratives showing how rich and successful they have become.

We have decided to add narrative to our music video as the lyrics is almost telling a story so we are visualising the lyrics.

We have decide to show our narrative in a subtle yet exciting way by not giving away too much but enough for the audience to know what is going on.

Page 9: Pitch for ‘dirty laundry’

what type of music video are we making and who is the target audience?

The R&B genre has no specific target audience ,However research has shown us that younger listeners ( early teens- late 30s) listen to more R&B than the older age groups.

Our target audience is mainly young females .Our music video is going to be subtle music video with a lot of meanings. it is going to

have a dull atmosphere ,this will be achieved through the use of dark lighting.

Analysing the lyricsWhen my sister was on stage killing it like a m**********, I was enraged, feeling it like a

m**********. Bird in a cage you would never know what I was dealing with. Went our separate ways but I was happy that she was killing it.

This refers Kelly Rowland's ‘sister’ Beyonce who became famous worldwide within the music industry while Kelly herself struggled.

Meanwhile this n**** is putting his hands on me… Kelly entered an abusive relationship which was hidden by other events.

“It’s almost been a decade I’m behind those black shades, roll up like its all good riding around in that Escalade. Fix my makeup. Kelly get it together, Kelly get it together.

Kelly hid her decade length abusive relationship.

Kind of lucky I was in her shadow. Phones call from my sister “what’s the matter” she said “oh no baby you gotta leave.” I’m on the kitchen floor, he took the keys…”

Kelly then reveals that she decided to leave after a phone call with her sister. She then thanks her for being in her shadow to hide her relationship.

So here I am in this spin cycle we are coming and we are going and nobody can notice and I was trapped in this house lying to my momma, thought it could get no worse as we maximized the drama.

She later reveals that she returns to the relationship and starts to lie to her family about what was going on behind closed doors.

“He pulled me out and said don’t nobody love you but meTo end the emotional track she reveals how the abuser manipulated her and

isolated her away from her family and friends.

What is our shooting schedule like? Our aim is to shoot this music video within two weeks using outside college times e.g.

weekends for scenes outside the drama room.We aim to focus on one scene a day for example by the end of a day we would have finished the choreography scenes. We had to put into consideration that our dancers go to college therefore we have to agree on a special time all of us are available and the location is available!

Thursday 7th November - Drama in the house . Tuesday 12th - Wednesday 13th - Choreography in drama studio

What props do we need and equipment?

• We need quite a few porps as the music video has elements of narrative.

Page 16: Pitch for ‘dirty laundry’

Equipment

• Camera – obviously for shooting.• Tripod this is used to make the whole footage steady

as we don't want any shaky footage unless it is handheld.

• Lighting- we are using dull lighting in the drama studio.• Bright lighting for the dancers and focused lighting for

and lip syncing verses. We are using redhead in the house scenes as we want the video to look lit up and professional

• Music the song will be playing to give us a guide for the lip syncing choreography and narrative.

Page 17: Pitch for ‘dirty laundry’

How are we going to style the artists?

The dancers-the dancers in any music video must look conventionally attractive especially in r&b muThe two dancers will wear high heels and black skirt or shorts. Their makeup will be loud and heavy we decided to do this as this is dominant in R&B music videos.

The main character- she is the star so she will haveA variety of looks represnting different times of the sogLip syncing this idea was taken from jonelle monaeCold war wear she appears to have lnude make up And her har ted back.in the other scene she will wear Black clothes and formal clothes

Kellys boyfriend.Hat's, big chains and sun glasses (even indoors) this is the usual seen in R&B music videos. We want to represent our character as a thug. This is the dominant representation of men in R&B music videos.
