CHIEF'S CORNER | 3

H ere we are in Abilene, Texas for the 2014 Texas State H.O.G. Rally. The

welcome here has been great. The rally is on the local news, billboards, and fliers all over town welcoming us and people just saying hi. With Lynn Lowrie in the lead, 18 bikes and trikes with 22 people left the shop at 9 a.m. Thursday.

At our first stop, our western contingent joined us. The weather was perfect riding out. After checking in at the rally site, we then proceeded to our hotels with the plan to rendezvous at Kent’s Harley-Davidson to discuss dinner plans. Deciding on Lytle’s Land & Cattle, we found one of our members’ bikes with a flat tire. Kent’s H-D staff took care of the bike and our member very quickly allowing them to join us at dinner. As we were waiting for our tables, the afternoon ride of six riders joined us.

Friday found our Chapter enjoying a wide variety of activities. Lynn Lowrie led a small contingent of 16 bikes on a tour of Buffalo Gap. Our precision riding team practiced in the morning and competed that afternoon. Others joined the guided rides and toured the windmill farms. Others struck out on their own to explore the area. And, of course, there was eating.

If you’re in the area and looking for some good barbecue, be sure to visit Joe Allen’s BBQ and Steakhouse — recommended by Darla Webster and receives the Duck’s stamp of approval. We also visited Cypress Street Station where we enjoyed great food and some of the best desserts we’ve ever had.

The adventures continued Saturday with a large contingent of D.H.O.G. Chapter members riding

together to Dyess Air Force Base to take part in a large group photo with other rally attendees in front of a B-1B member and a C-130.

Afterwards, they rode in the parade from the Air Force Base to the Expo Center. Self-guided rides were the rule of the day. The highlight of the afternoon was watching Gloria Barnes in a ride-off for first or second place in the Bike Rodeo Advanced Precision Riding. She completed that run in one-minute and 57.6 seconds without touching a single cone garnering a first place finish.

As most of you have probably heard, the 2015 Texas State H.O.G. Rally will be in Tyler. There, Doug Gaddis will defend his title as The Oldest Active Rider as he goes for a three-peat, and Gloria Barnes will defend her title as Texas State H.O.G. Rally Bike Rodeo Champion.

Sunday morning broke clear and cool and saw members loading their bikes and preparing to ride to their next destinations. Some were heading straight back to their homes and others were making brief side trips for ice cream stops. But for some, the adventure continues as we head farther west…

THE NEW H.O.G. LOGO

T he Harley Owners Group is one of the most positive and lasting identities in the motorcycle world. Your connection to the Motor Company has helped make Harley-Davidson what

it is today. From the beginning, the iconic H.O.G. logo has

represented the passion of our riders. No matter where in the world you might find yourself, chances are you’ll find a fellow rider wearing that very same logo. Recognition of this global symbol of freedom, independence, and love of the open road has always created an instant and powerful bond.

But 30 years of anything is a long time. H.O.G. talked to over a 100,000 members and the results were clear: The new logo captures the spirit of the original, evolving the design while still being instantly recognizable by legions of H.O.G. members. The Harley-Davidson Bar & Shield is, at its heart, declaring H.O.G. as the official riding club of H-D. The eagle shifts its gaze, looking toward new horizons.

THE GOLDEN LANE

Riding safely often involves trade-offs. It’s your responsibility to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of all your options, and make smart decisions accordingly.

Picture each lane of traffic divided into three lane positions: 1, 2, and 3, from left to right.

Position 1: A common way to define it is riding in the left track of the vehicle in front of you. It’s often the best place on the road to both see and be seen. Staying in Position 1 makes it less likely that a driver might try to squeeze in and crowd you out.

Position 2: It’s probably fair to say that this position is something of a last resort. Some say you should never ride in the middle of the lane, but I won’t go quite that far. The main reason to avoid it is that’s where oil leaking from vehicles tends to get deposited. It’s also where dirt and debris tend to accumulate, as vehicle tires tend to keep

other parts of the lane a little cleaner. You’re also often less visible in Position 2. Some drivers can’t see you in their rearview mirrors, and in the middle of the lane, you’re less likely to be in range of their side view mirrors.

Position 3: This lane position is a good choice in a number

of different situations. One is when riding on a two-lane highway, and there’s a lot of oncoming traffic in the other lane. In position 1, many riders don’t like the sensation of traffic whizzing by them at such a close distance. In addition to being uncomfortable psychologically, a rider in this situation is exposed to a number of potential hazards. The wind blast from other large vehicles can knock you around, potentially putting you in harm’s way. In this situation, Position 3 can be your refuge. If the oncoming traffic is sparse, stay in Position 1 if you prefer, and shift to Position 3 as needed.

Stay tuned on more information about lane positions in upcoming issues.

8 | MUSINGS FROM THE DUCK POND

G reetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. This is the tale of two adventures as a few of us are headed west from the Texas State H.O.G. Rally. Angela and I have wanted to ride out to Marfa, Texas, since at least

2008. The Marfa, Davis Mountains, and Big Bend area of Texas is a part of this grand state that draws both of us like a siren’s song did for ancient mariners. So with Ken “Chief” Ballard and Lori Wetsel along, we finished up the rally in Abilene, Texas, saddled our iron ponies and — with a very special mission ahead of us — we rode off Sunday morning, headed west, with the rising sun at our backs.

This ride was planned to fulfill a promise I made to a dear friend in 2008. That friend was Ron Helvey, fellow chapter member and D.H.O.G. Road Captain. Ron had only been riding with us for less than a year, but he made a lasting impression on everyone he came in contact with. He had just made his first H.O.G. rallies in Texas and Arkansas and was having the time of his life.

This was when we began talking about a ride to Marfa. He was all over it. But it was not to be for us to make the traditional ride there together. Just before we were to leave to ride up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the 105th Harley-Davidson Anniversary Celebration, Ron lost his life in a

motorcycle crash after having led us on one of our Ice Cream Runs that morning.

Ron’s widow, Donna, asked me to fulfill one of Ron’s wishes — to have his ashes scattered to the four winds. I knew where we had to go. Marfa was going to have to be one of the four destinations for Ron, since I had promised to take him there. But before then, Angela and I made our trip to the 105th Anniversary Celebration with stops to scatter Ron’s ashes first in South Dakota, next at the original Harley-Davidson factory in Milwaukee, and lastly on the original route of Route 66 in Kansas. Unfortunately, the final stop, West Texas, was not to happen until 2014. But when we began planning this final ride, it all came together like it was meant to be.

The Jeff Davis Mountains and Big Bend regions of West Texas are probably the only areas in Texas that have remained unchanged in over 180 years. There are miles of empty roadway where a breakdown or emergency might present some real challenges; where endless vistas of wide-open country remind you of just how small and insignificant you might be in this country. You do not

MUSINGS FROM THE DUCK POND | 9

try to tame or control the land; you adapt to its vastness and survive. There is a quietness that is overwhelming in its silence and a beauty in its isolation from the rest of the world. You either love it or hate it, but no matter your feelings about it, it is unchanged and unchanging in its grandeur. So off we rode and the adventures began.

Upon our arrival in Marfa, we checked into the historic Hotel Paisano. This is the hotel that Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, Dennis Hopper, and James Dean stayed in during the filming of the movie Giant. It is truly a step back in time and very much like the Menger Hotel in San Antonio.

After checking in, we decided on pizza for supper from the Marfa Contemporary Pizza Foundation. We were told you have to call ahead to make sure they have enough dough to make a crust. Luckily they did. And they make a great crust but it only comes in one size — 18-inch — which is not a problem, unless you’re eating alone. As we were enjoying our pizzas, who should walk in but three of our state’s finest Troopers. Just checking on me to make sure I was having a good time, no doubt. After the usual courtesies and a photo to document our time together, we headed out the door and down the road to bear witness to the legendary Marfa Lights.

Now the lights are not visible every night, and there is no specific time of evening when they appear or any specific pattern to them. But we did see lights off in the mountains. So I think we can honestly say we saw the mysterious Marfa Lights.

The next day, the primary part of our journey began, but not until after breakfast and the obligatory photo with another State Trooper who wanted to make sure I was being taken care of. They are a caring group of folks! So with their blessings, we headed off to ride the Fort Davis Loop. This is a 74-mile loop that runs through the Jeff Davis Mountains from just south of Fort Davis up to the McDonald Observatory and back into Fort Davis. I recommend beginning the ride on Hwy 166, just off of Hwy 17, and riding up into the mountains; then turn right on Hwy 118, visit the McDonald Observatory; and then head back into Fort Davis and stop at the site of the Fort just north of town. Be sure you stop off at the Fort Davis

Drugstore for a burger and refreshments. When you stop at the Observatory, make sure you ride up

the mountain to the telescopes to get a view of the country. The road going up to the summit of Mount Locke, where the main telescope is located, is Texas Hwy 78. It ends at an elevation of 6,791 feet and is the highest point on the Texas Highway system. After looking around and eating my freeze-dried ice cream — which should gain some recognition at the Ice Cream Run for eating ice cream on the highest State Highway road in Texas — we all agreed that this was the perfect fourth spot to scatter Ron’s ashes. So under the shade of a tree by the Observatory, overlooking the valley below, and under the watchful eye of a nearby road runner, I completed my promise to Ron.

With my mission accomplished, we mounted our iron ponies and headed down the mountain knowing that we had done something special. If you are ever up at the top of Mount Locke, say “Hi” to a faithful and dear friend to all.

I close this chapter by saying I know that right now, this minute, Heaven’s Road Captain Ron Helvey still plays with motorcycles. God speed my friend, you are missed by many.

I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!

Valerie Wong joined the Dallas Harley-Davidson team May 2012 as Marketing Manager. Without having much Harley in her blood, she soon found herself having a blast and immersed in the Harley culture at bike nights, chapter rides, and toy runs.

Before she knew it, she was riding as a passenger with her friends and acing her motorcycle safety course in February’s 30-degree weather and rain.

Her favorite part of the job is that every day brings something new, exciting, and unknown. She also loves how extremely welcoming the motorcycling community is to its new members.

For the upcoming summer months, Valerie’s advice is to stay hydrated while riding in the heat. Don’t just drink water; make sure to get electrolytes too. And don’t forget to stop by the shop on Saturdays for snow cones to cool you off!

ABOUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTThe Service Department is the circulatory system of the dealership — the blood flow. But from the customer’s perspective, we are the Pediatric Ward, as we are taking care of their “babies.” We keep in mind that each customer’s primary concern is his or her bike. At any given time we can have up to 100 “primary concerns” in our care. Our job is to find the balance to give each one the attention it demands. Whether it’s a repair, maintenance, or an upgrade, we want to live up to the credo our Technicians came up with — WE TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE!

HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENTMaking an appointment is easy. The best way is to complete the service request form on dallashd.com and we can save you time by having most of the check-in questions answered. Another option is to call 972-270-3962 and ask to speak with one of our Service Advisors. The check-in process will take about 10 to 15 minutes so we can be certain we are addressing all of your concerns as well as notify you about some of the H-D products that may enhance YOUR ride.

EXTENDED WARRANTY INFORMATIONOne of the best products from Harley-Davidson is the ability to add an extended warranty to your bike at just about any time in your ownership. If you have any questions about coverage, please contact Rob Kellick, a Service Advisor, or a Finance Manager in Sales for more info. Beyond the warranty - the possibilities are nearly endless to make your ride, YOURS. Whether it’s a repair, maintenance, or an upgrade, we want to live up to the credo our Technicians came up with — PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE!

Whether it is performance, appearance, or a combination of both, we are here to help you stamp the final four letters into your V.I.N. — “M-I-N-E.”
