W e all scream for ice cream! Yes, the 2014 D.H.O.G. Ice Cream Run is coming. It starts May 3 and runs through 5 p.m. June 29. Books

are available from Chapter officers for $10 each or two for $20. There are 11 stops this year. At each stop you’ll draw for one of five colors — red, purple, blue, yellow, or green. You are allowed one draw per book; However, you can play more than one book. The employee will record the color in the book for that stop and will either initial or stamp the page.

There are two bonus stops this year, and they require you to ride your bike to them. The first one is in Brenham, Texas. Take a picture of you, your bike, and the 2014 book in front of the Blue Bell Visitor Center at 1101 South Blue Bell Road. The second bonus is awarded to whoever rides the farthest on their bike as calculated from Dallas H-D using the shortest route. Again, you’ll need a picture of you, your bike, and the 2014 book. On the evening of June 29, we’ll gather at the Hella Shrine Temple in Garland and reveal the point values of each color.

According to some websites, you burn calories riding a motorcycle, so that should offset the calories taken in. Unfortunately, there was no information about the passenger burning calories. All this information is on the internet, so it must be true. Remember, all proceeds go to MotorCops for Kids. First place prize is $125 and second place prize is $75. In the event of a tie, we will draw at the picnic to determine the winner.

Look out Abilene, here comes Dallas H.O.G. led by Lynn Lowrie. May 15 through 17 marks

the 2014 Texas State H.O.G. Rally. It sounds like we will be having a decently sized contingent this year at the rally. There will be self-guided and guided rides, bike games, entertainment, and the opportunity to be in a group picture in front of a B-1B and a C-130. The past rallies we have traveled to — Wichita Falls, Beaumont, and San Antonio — have been fun and entertaining events. It’s an opportunity to enjoy fellowship of Chapter members, meet some new folks from far and distant lands, and learn and see new things about Abilene you never knew existed. So if you haven’t made up your mind to go, seriously think about joining us.

May 26 is Memorial Day. Please remember and honor the men and women of our Armed Forces who paid the ultimate price for the freedom we enjoy. They are truly the heroes to whom we owe a great debt of gratitude.

D o you ever think about roadside assistance? Are you going to a rally this year? It is a great thing to travel with the peace of mind provided by the standard roadside assistance package

included with your full H.O.G. membership. Standard Roadside Assistance included with

full H.O.G. membership provides one assistance per calendar year for one registered H-D motorcycle, with $100 U.S. maximum coverage. This program covers roadside needs such as fuel, oil, fluid, and water delivery; lost or locked key assistance; and help extracting your H-D motorcycle when stuck in a ditch or other inaccessible areas. For flat tire or battery assistance, a tow to the nearest H-D dealer or another location of your choice is provided. You’re responsible for any non-covered expenses or expenses in excess of $100 per calendar year.

Deluxe Roadside Assistance ($19.95/year)extends coverage to two H-D motorcycles registered to an active full member. This program also offers unlimited services per year with all-covered towing/roadside costs paid in full.

Ultra Roadside Assistance ($29.95/year) adds emergency travel reimbursement when the H-D motorcycle is disabled due to a collision or the mechanical breakdown of a warranty-covered component.

Ultra Plus Roadside Assistance ($49.95/year)includes ultra-level coverage for up to two H-D motorcycles and three personal vehicles, including automobiles and light-duty trucks.

While some breakdowns are impossible to prevent, an Extended Service Plan offers peace of mind by protecting you from costly repairs. See Dallas Harley-Davidson for Extended Service Plan

information. Visit members.hog.com or call Road America toll free at 866-209-8270 for more detailed information on Roadside Assistance options.

Also, take a “Just In Case” kit with you. Here’s a list of some useful stuff to take along on your ride to deal with roadside trouble: pocketknife or multi-tool, bike lock, tire pressure gauge, tool kit, energy food bar, water, first aid kit, tape, cell phone and charger, light, emergency numbers, motorcycle owner’s manual, sunscreen, credit card, and emergency cash.

Some fact to keep in mind on the road are:• A high percentage of flat tires are caused by tires

that are too worn or that had an embedded object that caused a slow leak.

• Many battery failures could be prevented by using a battery tender whenever the motorcycle is parked overnight. There’s a constant draw on the battery even with the engine off.

• If a car or truck is used as the booster battery, make sure the vehicle is not running. High-output charging systems from larger vehicles can damage the electrical components on the motorcycle.

8 | MUSINGS FROM THE DUCK POND

G reetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. Eleven folks, seven scooters, and one cage departed the dealership on Thursday, April 3, under overcast skies with one objective

— to have safe travels and enjoy some good Cajun culture down in southern Louisiana at the 2014 Louisiana State H.O.G. Rally in Lafayette. I believe I can speak for those involved in this adventure that a good time was had by all. We rode, we ate, we saw, we ate again, and then we ate again, or at least it would seem.

Our merry band of pranksters consisted of Chief Ballard, Lori Wetsel, Phil and Barb DeChant, Todd and Kelly Shockley, Dennis Gross, Sandy Turner, Bobby Jones, and of course Angela Kennerly and the Duck.

So, after a dry ride into Lafayette and getting our rally registrations in order, we dispersed to our respective hotels to prepare for the memories to be

made. Most of us found our way to the early bird party, hosted by Cajun Harley-Davidson and began our culinary quest at that point. Then we were serenaded by a rocking zydeco band in the parking lot. I would bet that most of us slept well that night after we got back to the hotel.

Friday dawned misty and damp, but everyone had fully planned out their day and so we took off in several different directions to find our nirvana of Cajun delights. Angela had some shopping items on her wish list, so — in the company of Chief and Lori — we headed over to the venders to see their offerings. This rally actually had some decent venders this year, and everyone found something to their liking.

After dropping off our purchases back at the hotel, we decided to check out a place recommended to Chief by one of his coworkers as a place for some good food. So off we headed towards Lake Charles to the west. Rabideaux’s Sausage Kitchen was our destination and after a 70-mile ride we arrived in

“…And Then It Rained Crawfish…”

by Ken “Papa Duck” Kennerly

MUSINGS FROM THE DUCK POND | 9

the community of Iowa, Louisiana. Rabideaux’s is a true meat market, specializing in deer and game processing. They also have a small café serving chicken, sausages, and side dishes. I had a crawfish boudin sausage, and I was very pleased with my choice. For those not in the know, Cajun boudin is a type of sausage traditionally made from a mixture of pork, rice, and seasonings. Its origin and history date back two centuries or more to the Acadians who migrated to Nova Scotia from France and later to Louisiana. And, like any sausage, it is sometimes best to just enjoy it without asking what is added to make it taste so good.

So after a filling lunch we decided to ride on into Lake Charles and check out the oldest dealership in Louisiana, Harley-Davidson of Lake Charles. This shop is a nice example of what Harley dealers used to be. Located in a working class neighborhood, well away from any interstate highway, it harkens back to what shops were fifteen or more years ago. They had excellent stock and a friendly staff. Then it was time to head back towards our home camp, and that we did. This was a 140-plus-miles-for-lunch ride that satisfied me very much. But wait, there was still supper to enjoy.

Arriving back in Lafayette, we hooked up with Gene and Gloria Barnes who had driven down that day and off into the bayou we headed for some seafood and fellowship. Check out Pat’s Fisherman Wharf in Henderson the next time you are in the area, and you will be glad you did. It met our needs as we tried to put a dent in the Louisiana supply of fried shrimp, fried crawfish, crawfish boulettes, and crawfish etouffee.

Friday dawned misty and grey, but that did not cause us any concern as Angela, Chief, Lori, and I joined up and took a guided ride to Prejean’s Restaurant for breakfast. After eating our fill, Chief and Lori rode up north to see if they could find some of the Ballard clan up in the backwaters leaving Angela and me to head down to Avery Island for a little sightseeing on our own (pictured). Avery Island is the birthplace and home for Tabasco Pepper Sauce, and a natural 170-acre paradise called the Jungle Gardens. You ride a five mile unpaved road through some wonderful deep-wooded areas with live oaks covered by Spanish moss, azaleas in full bloom, and alligators floating in the bayou. Keep your feet on the

floorboards at all times. A must see if you’re ever in the area.

But, as is often the case after a day of riding and making memories, it always returns to a time for supper, and we decided to head back to Prejean’s Restaurant for our dinner and another opportunity to try to decrease the crawfish population as best we could.

I do believe Barb DeChant did as good a job of devouring crawfish as was humanly

possible during her time at the rally, and I swear I began seeing wanted posters with Barb’s picture on it from the Crustaceous Justice League! That night we tried as hard as we could to keep up, but with Chief Ballard a dedicated beef and chicken man, we were a man down on our attempts. Well, at least Abilene, Texas is a beef mecca so we will see what we can do to lighten the area of steaks at the Texas State H.O.G. Rally in May.

Our day of departure was forecast to be a rainy and cold ride back to Texas, and with the other riders leaving a day early to miss the rain, a brave column of two trikes and one bike set off Sunday morning with some wonderful memories filed away. With the rain never materializing in anything heavier than a wall of water suspended in the air, our merry band of Phil, Barb, Chief, and Lori made it up to Shreveport for a lunch stop. But just as we were getting ready to strike out again, lightning and heavy rain convinced us that tomorrow might bring a better day to finish the ride, so we promptly checked into the nearest hotel. Ironically, it was the same hotel I checked into on the August 28, 2005 after my scooter became a lightning rod as I led another merry band of pranksters trying to outrun hurricane Katrina. Good times, but not one I wanted to repeat.

For those who joined us for this adventure, I thank you. For those who were unable to be a part of this experience, now is the time to start your planning for the 2015 Louisiana State H.O.G. Rally in Monroe, Louisiana April 9 to 11, 2015. The ride leaves the dealership at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015. See you then.

I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!

Lance Orso joined the Dallas Harley-Davidson team as a motorcycle sales associate last year and has been working his dream job since. This month, he celebrates his one-year anniversary as Assistant Sales Manager.

Switching between his custom 2010 Wide Glide and his Suzuki RMZ 450, Lance’s favorite rides are from Glen Rose, Texas into the Hill Country and the Oak Hill and Village Creek Motocross raceways.

Racing in motocross since the age of 16, entering the motorcycle industry just came naturally. Lance has been in the motorcycle sales, parts, and service industry for the last seven years and plans to keep going. His favorite part about the job is constantly being around the people that he loves to spend time with and the toys he loves to play with.

In observance of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Lance’s advice originates from the motocross world: Dress for the crash, not the ride… and wear sunscreen.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT | 19FIT, FUNCTION & PERFORMANCE

W hen you are taking a week-long trip, where do you carry everything? Your motorcycle is your daily commute,

where do you carry tools or your briefcase? Or if you’re like me and on your way home from work when the wife calls with a grocery list, leaving you wondering how the heck you are going to fit everything on the motorcycle. This month, I will go over what’s available to carry extra things on your motorcycle.

Saddlebags are perhaps one of the most common ways to add storage to your motorcycle. Saddlebags come in many sizes and are usually shaped according to the model they fit on. They come in leather, leather over a rigid shell, distressed leather, synthetic leather, nylon, and hard color-matched. Many of the saddlebags are detachable and can be removed without tools in a matter of seconds. Other saddlebags are lockable for added security. Those that don’t lock may be able to accommodate an accessory lock to gain some level of security.

Some saddlebags are a “Thro-Over” design similar to what you would see thrown over the back of a horse during the Wild West days. Those bags require some form of support bar to keep them from rubbing various moving parts of the motorcycle. Those supports also give the bag a tie-off point to keep them from flying off at high speeds.

Another form of storage is the sissybar bag. These bags are designed to fit over sissybars and sit on luggage racks. These bags come in many sizes from 900 cu in to systems with 3,900 cu in. Some of these bags come with a rain cover; some have reflective piping for visibility; some have a rigid shape to help keep their form while empty; and some come with a two-year warranty. Other

sissybar bags double as backpacks making them easy to carry when not on the motorcycle. These bags can be made of ballistic nylon, while others can be made of leather.

As seen on many of the touring models, some bikes can add a Tour-Pak. These can be leather over a rigid shell to hard color-matched. These are usually mounted on a detachable mounting system for ease of removal when not in use. In addition to a Tour-Pak, you can have a luggage rack added for the mounting of additional bags. These Tour-Pak bags can be made of and have some of the same features of sissybar bags.

Smaller bags can consist of sissybar bags, fork bags, and tank bags to name just a few. Sissybar bags, as the name suggests, mount on sissybars on Softail, Dyna, and Sportster models. These are made of leather and are sized to be discrete. While not as large as saddlebags, sissybar bags are permanently mounted and are not available

in a detachable setup. The sissybar bags that mount on Dyna and Sportster models will cover up where the left passenger footpeg mounts.

Fork bags can almost be mounted anywhere you want, making them very versatile. You can see them mounted on forks, handlebar

risers, and used as a small sissybar bag. Tank bags are not a popular bag, but can be

used when no other option is available. For those that already have saddlebags or a

Tour-Pak, you can get different bags that act as travel bags. These bags fill up the saddlebag or Tour-Pak, making the removal of the items easy and simple. Some of these travel bags are designed as coolers to keep your pit stop refreshments cool.

These are just some of the storage options available for the look you want or for the amount you want to carry.

ABOUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTThe Service Department is the circulatory system of the dealership — the blood flow. But from the customer’s perspective, we are the Pediatric Ward, as we are taking care of their “babies.” We keep in mind that each customer’s primary concern is his or her bike. At any given time we can have up to 100 “primary concerns” in our care. Our job is to find the balance to give each one the attention it demands. Whether it’s a repair,

WE TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE!

HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENTMaking an appointment is easy. The best way is to complete the service request form on dallashd.com and we can save you time by having most of the check-in questions answered. Another option is to call 972-270-3962 and ask to speak with one of our Service Advisors. The check-in process will take about 10 to 15 minutes so we can be certain we are addressing all of your concerns as well as notify you about some of the H-D products that may enhance YOUR ride.

EXTENDED WARRANTY INFORMATIONOne of the best products from Harley-Davidson is the ability to add an extended warranty to your bike at just about any time in your ownership. If you have any questions about coverage, please contact Kristin Draves, a Service Advisor, or a Finance Manager in Sales for more info. Beyond the warranty - the possibilities are nearly endless to make your ride, YOURS. Whether it is performance, appearance, or a combination of both, we are here to help you stamp the final four letters into your V.I.N. — “M-I-N-E.”
