Welcome...If the winter weather is any indication, 2012 is looking good to me. We endured the ups and downs of 2011 and are hap-py to share it was another year of improv-ing activity at Bucks Country. The weather was the big story for us with a wet and cold start, a wet and hot late summer and a wet and warm fall...but cold enough for an 8” snow in October. Rainfall totals in our area exceeded 70” for the year, more than 25” above average and above the 63” average for Hawaii, the wettest state in the country. That’s a whole lot of rain! Thanks for your loyal support and weath-ering the storms with us.

We’re excited about the coming year for lots of good reasons. Our team is enthusiastic, the store looks awesome, the nursery is being updated, and we’ve discovered a ton of new product lines we think you’ll really like. Nancy has imported a new pottery line with styles and finishes we’ve never seen before and prices she’s certain you’ll like. Darryl is bringing back Garden Elements custom planters and hanging baskets per your requests. Donna has introduced five new groupings of Erwin and Sons resin wicker casual furniture, offering both traditional and contemporary styling to anchor our new lifestyle displays.

More than anywhere in the store, new lines in the Boutique are already causing quite a stir. Greg and Donna were busy at the Atlanta Market landing Aspen Bay Candles, cinda b Handbags, Waxing Poetic Sterling Jewelry, Noelle Wraps,

Powder European Scarves, Nectar Soaps and Lotions, Tervis Tumblers, Le Cadeux Tableware, Big Buddah Handbags, Tokyo Bay Watches, Stonewall Kitchens Gourmet and Gersen Monogrammed Tableware.

Who would have guessed that an old conservative landscape designer like me would get so excited about home decor and women’s accessories?

Perhaps the biggest thing at Bucks Country in 2012 is our e-commerce website coming this summer. You’ll be able to shop from home and have items delivered to your house. We’ll be able to reach an infinitely larger audience and send items worldwide. Things are mov-ing faster than ever and we’re committed to keeping pace–providing you, our customers, and our team a stable future and endless opportunity. Hope to see you at Bucks Country real soon!

Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, provides the energy boost we need to re-charge and move forward. It is a sophisticat-ed hue that is both dramatic and seductive. Just like a beautiful sunset, Tangerine Tango combines the vivaciousness of red with the warmth of yellow creating a truly magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.

Surprisingly versatile, Tangerine Tango is a hue with a lot of depth, a bit exotic, yet friendly. Pair it with complementary colors like blues and greens to really make it pop. If your style is a little more reserved, pair it with similar shades such as reds, pinks and yellows to tone it down a notch. Tangerine

Tango also works beautifully with neutrals of taupe,

grey, brown and white.

Give your interior and exterior living spaces

a wake-up call with Tangerine Tango. A little

or a lot, the choice is yours. Try an accent wall in a kitchen or entry. If a whole wall is too much for you, add splashes of color around with accessories like throw pillows, a blanket, vase or other tabletop pieces.

No matter how you incorporate Tangerine Tango in your life, feel the energy and warmth it exudes. You’ll be the cutting edge trend setter amongst your friends. Here are a few Tangerine Tango-inspired products available at Bucks Country Gardens–enjoy them as we dance into spring!

In Your Own BackyardBucks country Gardens Landscape feature

Extreme TransformationThe new owners of this gorgeous Doylestown home were excited to get started on a com-plete transformation of both the front and back yards. Adding character and functional-ity were high up on their list. Blending new products to complement the existing archi-tecture and landscape was number one.

Top, After: A view of the new two-level Pennsylvania bluestone patio as it extends from the home into the backyard.Left, Before: French patio doors were installed by the new homeowners in anticipa-tion of creating an outdoor living space, which the home was missing. The mature trees, severe slope of the yard and a sizable retaining wall were among the many challenges the designer faced.

In Your Own BackyardBucks country Gardens Landscape feature

Phase OneThe first phase of this project was the front yard and entrance to the home. Plantings around the foundation had reached their life span and no longer enhanced the architecture of the home. Most of the specimens were removed and our designers had a clean slate to create a warm and inviting entrance. The Pennsylvania Bluestone walkway now provides a comfortable approach to the front door from the driveway, and is lined with plants to soften the stone facade. Landscape lighting allows for a safe entry and creates beauty and flair.

Phase TwoThe second phase of the project was addressing an awkward space and severe gradation in the backyard which existed between a retaining wall and the house. Several large trees were removed to allow for comfortable use of this space. To overcome the severe grade change without creating a massive set of stairs, separate patio areas were built, one being two feet higher than the other. This allows space for grilling, relaxing and entertaining. To tie the new construction into the home’s existing materials, the stone retaining walls now match the stone of the house perfectly. The bluestone which caps the stairs and the patio surface adds a sophistication to the space while repeating the look of the walkway in the front yard. Landscape lighting provides safety in the low light and allows the homeowners to enjoy the space long after the sun goes down.

A well-maintained property is not only visually appealing, but also provides a sense of well-being and sets the foundation for a successful garden. Not everyone has the time nor energy to perform

Changing outdoor environments one property at a time~ Since 1996

In the market to buy high quality, long lasting outdoor furniture for your home? Here are some points to consider:

1. Specialty patio stores and full-line furniture stores, such as Bucks Country Gardens, are the best places to look. Avoid big-box stores and department stores.

2. Make sure all of the metal frames are created from alu-minum and not steel (steel will rust, aluminum will not rust).

3. Take the “thump test”. Good quality, heavy wall aluminum frames will have a “thud” sound when thumped. Cheap, thin wall aluminum frames will have a “tink” sound when thumped.

4. Are the fabrics truly outdoor fabrics? Have the fabrics been “UV” Tested?

5. Sit in the furniture–is it comfortable and roomy?

6. Notice the cushions–do they feel really light and too soft? If so, they are made only with fiber which will flatten or “pancake” in no time, leaving you with a saggy cushion that is uncomfortable.

7. Look at the foot glides and any end caps that fit into the metal end cuts. Do they match the frame finish? Quality manu-facturers will match these to the frame finish

8. Are the furniture legs supported by braces? When you sit in the furniture do the legs “walk” or tend to spread out? Braces will eliminate this design defect.

9. If nuts, bolts and washers are used, are they stainless steel or regular steel? Stainless steel hardware is more durable and will not rust. Regular steel will rust.

10. TriCk: Be aware that some poor-quality manufacturers will put steel rods into the aluminum frames to make the thin wall aluminum frame feel substantial. Due to the condensation that naturally develops inside the hollow aluminum frames, the steel will quickly rust and the stains will seep out leaving stains on the furniture and the patio or deck surface.

Bottom line, looks can be deceiving. Some stores present some nice “looking” furniture but the quality is not as good as the quality of furniture you will likely find in specialty patio stores or full-line furniture stores. The sales people at Bucks Country Gardens are always available to assist you in selecting the right patio and pool furniture for your outdoor space.

Introducing two new Vietnamese Pottery Collections to enhance every porch, patio or landscape: Le Croix Glazed Pottery and Black Clay Pottery.Le Croix Glazed Classic Vietnamese Pottery is extremely dense and fired at very high tem-peratures. Each handcrafted piece is unique in itself: the color variations or imperfections are inherent characteristics of the process used to create Le Croix pottery.

The Exclusive Black Clay Collection has an earthy, organic look. Made from the local soils of Vietnam, the clay runs dark tan to brown in color. After firing, the clay takes on a black hue and is then stained for additional color. Black clay pots are equivalent in popularity to what is commonly known in the United States as “terra cotta” pottery.

Can’t wait for you to meet the newest kids in our garden plot this spring at Bucks Country Gardens! These new plant introductions, with their unique and different personalities, can add the colorful and refreshing improvement your garden craves. Meet the five newest neighbors on our block and welcome them to your home and garden.

New Kids on the Plot

HelleboresHellebores are the harbingers of spring, blooming for six weeks or more beginning in late winter. They often flower during the Christian season of Lent, from which they get their common name, Lenten Rose. This is the perfect plant for naturalizing in moist, woodland areas where its extensive root system will spread as far as it is allowed. Deer resistant Hellebores are perfect com-panions for colorful Heucheras, Hardy Ferns and bold Hostas.

A brand new introduction in the Hellebores family is the Winter Thrillers series. They come in a multitude of colors ranging from giant greens to double pinks. Bucks Country Gardens will introduce three of the new series this spring: Grape Galaxy, Ice Follies and Pink Parachutes.

Hellebore ‘Grape Galaxy’ is a vigorous grower that produces an abundance of very large 3½”, grape purple flowers heavily spotted with dark purple flecks on every petal. Bright green centers provide brilliant contrast vividly against each dark colored flower. Mature plants can have over 50 flow

ers in bloom at once! Strong stems hold the flowers well above the evergreen foliage so they are sure not to be missed.

Mature specimens of ‘Ice Follies’ are ex-traordinarily heavy flowering, producing upwards of 100 flowers per plant, thereby being nicknamed “Major Stud” by the breeder. The large 3” cream to light yellow flowers are splashed with strawberry to burgundy red flecks on each petal.

Huge 4” flowers are the trademark of Hellebores ‘Pink Parachutes’. Very strong, pencil-width stems carry loads of blossoms from early through mid-spring. The lovely blooms are bright pink with a fine spray of tiny dark pink to wine colored spots on all of the petals. Most flowers have soft blush pink backs, but others have nicely contrast-ing white backs, lending a two-tone look to the blooms.

Be sure to stop in to Bucks Country Gardens anytime in April to pick up one of these great new Hellebores.

Hosta ‘First Frost’Looking for a Hosta that can take the heat? ‘First Frost’ is a great new offering of blue Hosta that, unlike most, will keep its blue shading throughout the hottest and most humid days of a typical Delaware Valley summer. Perfect for light shade areas, the bold, creamy yellow margins are set off by blue hearts as this plant grabs your attention from a distance and pulls you in for a closer look. In mid summer, this beauty will be covered in lavender flow-ers that will attract butterflies by the score. By summer’s end, the creamy yellow edges turn to a soft white. For multi-season appeal on a 3’ wide, low-care frame, look no further than Hosta ‘First Frost’.

Double Take Quince Series You will truly do a double take when you see one of these Quinces which look much like a Camellia. Double Take ‘Pink Storm’ and ‘Orange Storm’ put on a spectacular early season display. Bright spring flowers are only the begin-ning of the Double Take Quince’s appeal. Easy to care for, they have neither thorns, nor fruit and are deer-resistant. They thrive in part sun to full sun conditions and have a mounded growth habit. Extremely drought tolerant once established, these early spring charmers are excellent landscape plants. As an added bonus, the large, double flowers are beautiful in cut flower arrangements.

Pieris Japonica ‘Passion Frost’This new shade shrub sparkles with bright cerise pink flowers in spring and its uniformily variegated foliage attracts extra attention. A sparkling new variety of the beloved Lily-of-the-Valley shrub, Pieris Japonica ‘Passion Frost’ is festooned with pendulous clusters of flowers throughout spring. This new introduction is anticipated to be just as deer resistant as Andromeda ‘Mountain Fire’ or ‘Dorothy Wyckoff’.

Buddleia ‘Flutterby’A plant familiar to most, the Butterfly Bush often takes more garden space with which most gardeners are willing to part. Fortunately, the ‘Flutterby’ requires a fraction of the space needed to allow for a normal Buddleia. A late spring bloomer, the maximum size for ‘Flutterby Petites’ is 2’–3’ both tall and wide and prefers full sun. But don’t be deceived by the pint-sized package–these plants pack a punch of outstanding color and super-long bloom. Low-care and maximum impact, ‘Flutterby Petites’ are a great new introduction for every garden or landscape.

An integral part of the Bucks Country Gardens team, you won’t often find her on the retail sales floor or at a residential land-scape installation, but her work is everywhere–newspaper ads, Picket Fences magazines, banners, billboards, in-store signage–

the list can go on and on. Neverthe-less, she is most often hidden away behind her computer. Adriene Vesci Rice has been the Graphic Designer and Advertising Coordinator at Bucks Country Gardens since spring, 2008.

Born many moons ago in Philadelphia, Adriene had no choice but to become a city girl. Shortly after, her family moved to Glenside where she resided

until her early twenties. She grew up with an older and younger brother, played softball in middle school and graduated from Cheltenham High School. She attended Temple University

and earned a bachelor’s degree in Film Studies in 1994, later attended Tyler School of Art, studied abroad in Italy during September 11th, 2001 and earned a BFA in Illustration and Graphic Design in 2004.

An avid music and art lover, Adriene has had a diverse and creative career in retail: she worked in sales and management with a local record store chain for almost ten years, then landed a position in an art center managing a school which offered art classes to kids and adults, began a 10+ year career of teaching art to kids and then shared her knowledge of art making pro-cesses and materials at an art supply store. Soon after, Adriene came to Bucks Country Gardens and brought along her varied and extraordinary experience, a passion for learning and a drive to produce exemplary work.

On January 6th, 2011 Adriene’s family grew from two to three. A little girl was born and became the apple of Adriene’s eye. Baby Isabella would soon consume every free moment of her time. With a new chapter of life beginning, Adriene and her husband Marc have a lifetime of incredible memories to come.

Adriene has given the Garden Center yet another dimension and incredible amount of visibility, but chances are she will remain behind the scenes all the while continuing to be a key player in the success of Bucks Country Gardens.

We all admire a beautiful lawn. It can enhance your home’s curb appeal and provide a soft, resilient play area for your family. But too many people rely on lawn care programs that apply broad, and often unnecessary, applications of conventional fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides that are potentially harmful to chil-dren, pets and the environment.

The approach towards an organic lawn is “an ounce of preven-tion is worth a pound of cure”, meaning that the best defense against weeds and other problems is a healthy lawn, and that requires healthy soil. Healthy soil should be crumbly, brown and alive with earthworms and beneficial microorganisms. This allows roots to grow deep and become more resistant to drought and other stress. By following a few basic guidelines, you can create the right kind of soil to have a safe, beautiful lawn that is resistant to weeds and other potential problems.

WateringWatering should be a regular part of your lawn maintenance, especially during hot weather. In general, water your lawn thoroughly with about one inch of water when it begins to wilt in the spring. This deep watering encourages deeper rooting, making your lawn less susceptible to root-pruning insects and diseases. Summer watering should be light but frequent. The best time of day to water your lawn is early morning when evaporation losses are low and leaves dry quickly.

moWingMowing is an essential practice for proper lawn care by discour-aging weeds and making the lawn more resistant to pests. Ide-ally, grass should be cut often enough so that no more than 1/3 of the total grass height is removed at one time. Keep mower blades sharp to avoid ripping the grass and leave the clippings where they fall because they return nutrients to the soil. This can reduce nitrogen requirements by up to 30 percent.

feedingOur Espoma Organic lawn foods help prevent unsightly weeds from popping up. Plus, it provides a long-lasting feeding that nourishes the soil and grass so your lawn is more resistant to heat, drought and other stress. Because these products consist of 100% organic ingredients, they are safe for your family, your pets and the environment.

Espoma Organic® Weed Preventer 9-0-0 is made from pure, granulated corn gluten meal, a by-product from the manu-facturing of cornstarch. It prevents dandelions, crabgrass and other common weeds. Efficacy improves each year when used as directed.

Espoma Organic® Lawn Food 7-2-2 is specially formulated from all natural organic ingredients and enhanced with Bio-tone®, a proprietary blend of beneficial microbes that help promote faster greening, deeper roots and better soil structure.

Q When is a good time to plant new trees and shrubs?

A As soon as the ground thaws. If you can get a shovel in the ground, it’s safe to plant. The earlier the better. The plant will have more time to grow roots and establish in its new space before the heat of the summer comes along. Use Root Master B-1 at the time of planting for even more success. This will promote healthy root growth, which will also strengthen the plant and help it survive the first summer.

Q is it too early to plant my pansies?

A By the time pansies are in garden centers, they are safe to plant. A frost will cause them to lie flat, but they will perk back up when the temperature warms up.

Q should i cut dead flowers off pansies?

A Absolutely. If you “deadhead” the fin-ished flowers, it will promote new growth. Be sure to pinch the flower stem all the way back to where it meets the leaves instead of pinching right below the flower. Pinching back to the leaves makes the plant appear more dense and compact, even fuller and healthier.

Q What care do my houseplants need right now?

A As the days get longer and warmer, in-sect problems may become apparent. Catch them before there is a serious problem and treat with a systemic insecticide like Bonide Houseplant Insect Control. Also, start fertilizing with Schultz Plant Food Plus, an all-purpose liquid plant food.

Q What type of fertilizer do you recom-mend for Boxwood and arborvitae?

A Use Espoma Plant-tone fertilizer; do not use Holly-tone, which is for acid-loving evergreens, as it tends to lower the pH levels in the soil. Bring us a coffee can-sized sample of soil and ask an associate to do a pH test to determine your exact needs.

Q is now the time to do some light pruning on my fruit trees ?

A Yes. Most pruning is done during the dormant season, preferably just before active growth begins. At this time, pruning wounds will heal quickly and flower buds can be easily recognized. Treat with Bonide Horticultural Oil Spray to keep overwintering pest populations to a manageable level.

Tips & To-Do’sannualsStart seeds indoors for a jump start on the spring season.

Plant Pansises in containers and beds for early spring color.

Perennials Take pictures when spring bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, are in bloom. You’ll remember where the gaps were in your garden when it’s time to plant more bulbs in the fall.

Clean up perennial beds, apply compost and fertilize with Espoma Garden-tone.

ediBle GardeninGSow Peas and Beans directly into garden as soon as Crocus begin to emerge.

When prepping vegetable beds, use Bumper Crop to condition soil.

Trees & shruBs Plan new spring plantings now, espe-cially deciduous trees and conifers.

Prune slow growing evergreens such as Boxwood, Spruce, Hinoki Cypress. Prune White Pine when “candles” (light green new growth) are about 2” long.

Prune spring flowering plants (i.e., Forsythia, Dogwood, Redbud, etc.) im-mediately following their bloom period.

Apply Bonide Dormant Oil on ornamen-tal trees and shrubs to combat scale, aphids and other insects that may have laid overwintering eggs on plants.

laWn CareBring us a soil sample (enough to fill a coffee can) from your lawn or garden for a free pH test.

Start your turf maintenance program with Scotts Step 1 for Crabgrass control. For an organic approach, apply Corn Gluten to your lawn when Forsythia is in bloom.

indOOr PlanTsStart fertilizing indoor plants which will move outside when the warmer weather comes.

Garden TOOlsHave lawn mowers serviced, cleaned and blades sharpened for the grass cutting season.

Q i think my Crape myrtle died over the winter. What happened?

A Crape Myrtles “wake up” later than most plants in the spring, and are often mistaken for dead when they are still very much alive. They prefer to wait for consistently warm weather before pushing out leaves. If no buds appear by next month, cut a few branches from the tips to see if they are brown inside. If you see green, give it a little more time to push out its leaves.

Q i want to start seeds this year, but i don’t know how. any tips?

A From soil to seeds to grow lights to seed trays and lids, we have what you need for seed starting. Plus, every seed packet has the individual needs listed, as well as planting instructions. Ask any associate for assistance. Fun for the whole family!

Q i planted new plants last fall. should i be fertilizing them this spring?

A Yes. Use Master Start Fertilizer for most trees and shrubs. Or, try Espoma’s line of products, such as Holly-tone and Plant-tone, which are easy to apply. Fertilizing will

promote healthy top growth for the plant and strengthen the plant to help it combat insect and disease problems.

Q do i need to fertilize my knock-Out roses? if so what should i use?

A Knock-Out Roses are vigorous growers and bloomers without any help, but it doesn’t hurt to feed them. Topdress the base of the plant with Bumper Crop or Mushroom Compost, both of which will slowly release nutrients to the soil as they decompose over the spring months. Or, use a granular fertilizer such as Espoma Rose-tone, Master Start or Osmocote. For a liquid option, try Bayer Rose & Flower All-in-One, which not only fertilizes the plant but combats insect and disease problems that are common with Roses.

Q When should i apply crabgrass control on my lawn?

A A pre-emergent granular application is recommended around mid-April. Provide irrigation if rain is not in the forecast. Please note: do not apply Scotts’ Lawn Pro Crabgrass Control to newly seeded lawns as this will inhibit seed germination .

Tips & To-Do’sannualsStart seeds indoors for summer flower-ing annuals and vegetable plants.

Perennials Avoid removing foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Allow it to die naturally–it nourishes the bulb for the next year´s growth and flowers. Tying the foliage in a knot keeps it more attractive until it dies.

Use Bonide Rose & Flower 3-in-1 plant food on Roses and other perennials.

Spread Espoma Rose-tone fertilizer around existing Rose bushes.

ediBle GardeninGPlant cool season veggies like Carrots, Lettuce, Spinach and Beans.

Begin moving herbs outdoors, protect-ing them on cold nights. Keep Basil and Parsley indoors for a few more weeks since they are more sensitive to the cold.

Prepare vegetable gardens by tilling soil, weeding and spreading soil build-ers such as Bumper Crop, compost and mushroom soil. Work soil amendments into the top 3” layer of soil.

Trees & shruBs Fertilize fruit and flowering trees with Espoma Tree-tone.

Spread fresh mulch at 2–3” deep, keeping it away from trunks and stems of plants, shrubs and trees.

Prune any summer flowering shrubs like Butterfly Bush and Hydrangea.

Apply Bonide Tree & Shrub Insect Control for preemptive control of insect and disease problems.

Use Rootmaster B-1 when planting all new trees and shrubs to stimulate healthy root growth and reduce trans-plant stress.

laWn CareAerate, seed and fertilize existing lawns.

Start mowing lawns once grass blades have reached 3” tall.

Garden TOOlsPull the garden hoses out of storage and get them ready for use. Check for leaks and replace parts and nozzles as needed.

Q When can i plant summer annuals like Geraniums and lantana?

A The “frost free” date is May 15th for our region. Provided you protect plants on nights when the temperature goes down to freezing, you can plant tender annuals a few weeks prior to that date. To avoid death by frost, place a frost cloth over plants, or put them under a covered porch, in the garage or under a cushioned outdoor chair to keep frost from settling on top of plants.

Q There are tan/brown spots on the leaves of my Pachysandra ground cover. is this a concern?

A The pathogen is Volutella which causes a blight on the plant and if not treated, can lead to plant die back. Remove fallen leaves, provide good air circulation, avoid de-icing runoff and fertilize plants moderately. Apply Bonide Mancozeb, a fungicide to protect the plants when the weather is wet.

Q should i use potting soil or Bumper Crop to grow veggies in containers?

A Use Gardener’s Gold Organic Potting Soil for growing edibles in containers. Bumper Crop is meant for gardens and beds because

of its wonderful soil building components, but is too heavy for growing veggies in pots. Gardener’s Gold will provide better drain-age and oxygen to the roots, producing a healthier plant and better fruit production.

Q Why does my hibiscus drop most of its leaves or becomes discolored when i put it back outside?

A The increased amount of sun exposure can “shock” the plant. Gradually re-acclimate it to sunlight by exposing it to direct sun for only a few hours a day. After a week, slowly move it into full sun (six hours or more a day). This will help the plant adjust to the change in sun exposure in a healthy way.

Q i’ve tried planting both sun and shade loving plants in this one area but nothing survives. any suggestions?

A Yes, it’s called plant a birdbath! Seriously, some areas of the garden are just difficult areas. Maybe it’s the soil: too dry, too wet…there are many reasons an area can be troublesome. Use garden art as an alternative–statues, gazing balls and benches are a great way to fill a space that doesn’t seem to work as a planting area.

Tips & To-Do’sannualsPlant summer annuals in beds and con-tainers after all threat of frosty nights have passed.

Perennials Continue feeding roses with Espoma Rose-tone or Bonide Rose & Flower 3-in-1 every six weeks from the date of your first feeding.

ediBle GardeninGPlant summer vegetable plants–such as Eggplant, Pepper and Tomato–after the threat of frost (May 15) has passed. Be sure to use plant supports from the start, such as Tomato cages or stakes. It’ll be easier to tie the plants as they grow when the stakes are already in place.

Start a compost pile with veggie food scraps, untreated paper, yard waste and grass clippings. Leave some grass clip-pings on the lawn to add Nitrogen back to the soil.

Trees & shruBs Bagworms will be emerging soon on Arborvitae, Junipers and various other plants. Treat when they are small. Un-treated plants can be killed.

Use Espoma Soil Acidifier on Hydrangeas if a blue flower color is preferred, or Espoma Garden Lime for pink. White Hy-drangeas will be unaffected by adding either product.

Prune spring flowering shrubs like Rho-dodendron, Azalea and Forsythia after they are finished blooming.

laWn CareApply Bayer Grub Control on lawns for Grub protection; for an organic ap-proach, try Milky Spore.

Spot-kill lawn weeds with Bonide Weed Beater Ultra.

Leave some grass clippings on the lawn to add Nitrogen back to the soil.

indOOr PlanTsMove plants outdoors which were brought in for the winter. Keep an eye on the weather and protect them on any remaining frosty nights.

Garden TOOlsBe sure to clean tools of dirt, fertilizer and manure after each use.

Spring is in the air and lawns are waking up after the long winter. As grass turns green once again, it is easier to spot broadleaf weeds, but grassy weeds are trickier to identify and remove because they are similar to grass in appearance. These imposter “grasses”, such as crabgrass, can live alongside grasses of all varieties. Crabgrass spreads quickly and differs from grass in color, texture and growth pattern, creating an uneven and uncomfortable lawn if not identified and controlled early on.

WhaT is CraBGrass?Crabgrass gets its name because it sprawls from a central root low across the ground. It can become a problem quickly because it is able to grow vigorously in hot, dry conditions. Before dying in the fall, a single weed can distribute thousands of seeds which may germinate in spring.

hOW dO i GeT rid OF CraBGrass?Higher mowing encourages lawn grasses to shade and prevent the germination of crabgrass seeds. A deep-rooted, thick lawn seldom contains much crabgrass. Discourage the growth of crabgrass by mowing at the highest setting on your mower. Crabgrass is better adapted to adverse growing conditions than most lawn grasses; shallow and infrequent watering will only weaken the roots of your desired grass, while allowing the crabgrass to thrive and take over. If you water your lawn, water deeply and less frequently, wetting the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches. This usually requires the equivalent of ½-1 inch of rainfall. Apply a lawn food that contains pre-emergent weed control, such as Scotts® LawnPro® Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Fertilizer in early spring (before temperatures are regularly in the 80’s). It keeps crabgrass away for up to four months while providing your lawn with essential nutrients.

For more information on crabgrass and other lawn weeds, visit: www.buckscountrygardens.com/ask-an-expert and click on the link for Scotts.com.

insTruCTiOns1. Divide the block of clay into three equal parts. Soften the clay by warming it in your hands and kneading it with your fingers. Roll each piece into a ball.2. Use the container to flatten each ball to about a ¼” thick-ness. Set a leaf or sprig in the center of each clay disk, then gently press down to make an impression. Peel up a corner of the plant to check the impression. Press again, if needed, then carefully remove the leaf or sprig.3. Bake the disks on a parchment-lined baking sheet accord-ing to the manufacturer’s directions. Remove the sheet from the oven and allow the markers to cool completely, about 10 minutes. Use 2 or 3 glue dots to attach a craft stick to the back of each marker. http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/colorful-clay-plant-markers-675313/

An estimated three million children in the U.S. now have food allergies, and many of their parents turn to the internet for information, news and support. More than 20,000 of them are members of Kids With Food Allergies, a non-profit organization located right here in Doylestown.

Kids With Food Allergies was founded in 2004 by Lynda Mitchell to better serve the growing needs of parents looking for peer support and health information. Her son, now a teenager, had devel-oped multiple food allergies as an infant. Lynda had found virtually no information or support available and was moved to establish Parents of Food Allergic Kids, an on-line support group, in 1998. Lynda brings with her twenty years’ experience in hospital management, consulting, teaching and training and a Master’s degree from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota in Health Information Management.

The mission of KFA is to foster optimal health, nutrition and well-being of children with food allergies by providing educa-tion and a caring support community for their families and caregivers. The organization welcomes more than 500 new members every month with a website that receives 30,000 unique visitors monthly. Members post more than 300 mes-sages daily and the site houses more than 1,000 allergy-friendly “Safe Eats” recipes.

The organization contin-ues to be managed by Lynda and her Board of Directors with support from a Medical Advisory Team representing lead-ing hospitals from Boston to Chicago to Raleigh. Regional advisors include Terri Brown-Whitehorn,

MD at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Angela Nace, PharmD. at Thomas Jefferson University School of Pharmacy. KFA also relies heavily on a passionate and dedicated group of more than 40 volunteers and has a number of volunteer oppor-tunities listed on their website.

To join KFA, to get involved or make a contribution, contact them on-line at kidswithfoodallergies.org, call the office at 215-230-5394 or mail to 73 Old Dublin Pike, Suite 10, #163, Doylestown, PA 18901. Top photo credit: T&L Photography, tandlphotography.com

It’s hard to miss the American Heritage Fed-eral Credit Union corporate campus when driving on Red Lion Road in Northeast Philadelphia. The expansive com-plex with a newly dedicated commu-nity center is modeled in the colonial style of Williamsburg. Although not as historic, AHFCU is certainly proud of it’s heritage.

The credit union was founded in 1948 by the employees of the Budd Manufacturing Company. The orga-nization grew to include many other businesses mem-bers, and in 1985, the name was changed to Ameri-can Heritage Federal Credit Union. Branches included

Grant Avenue and Hunting Park in Philadelphia and Downingtown. The corporate campus and admin-istration center on Red Lion Road was dedicated in 1993 and today, AHFCU is the 6th largest credit union in Pennsylvania serving over 700 companies with over 112,000 mem-

bers. Currently, more than twenty-five branch offices can be found throughout the Delaware Valley, including local offices in Doylestown Hospital, New Britain, Horsham and Perkasie.

The credit union has evolved, providing services and finan-cial products for individuals and small businesses includ-ing: traditional savings and checking accounts, e-banking, no fee ATM’s, loans, mortgages, credit cards, IRA’s, financial planning and insurance. Lower loan rates and fees and higher interest rates are member benefits according to the member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative.

American Heritage was named as Best Places to Work finalist and has received national recognition for its charity involvement and it’s mission to provide financial

services to the underserved communities in the greater Philadelphia region. In 1996, AMFCU founded the Kids-N-Hope Foundation in support of the Children’s Seashore House of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and has donated over $750,000

to CHOP. Many other local, national and international causes have been the recipients of AHFCU’s support including Adopt-A-Family, Books for Kids, disaster relief and Campaign for Working Families.

Bucks Country Gardens is proud to be an employer spon-sor of AHFCU and is also proud to have been selected as a service provider for AHFCU throughout the years.
