In a new documentary on BBC Ra-

remarkable Ulsterman who trad-

County Down man Alan Brady tells Walter Love of his life-changing move into wine in New Zealand in the BBC Radio Ulster documentary Words To Wine

Alan, who is originally from near Rathfri-

land, had journalism in his blood as he was

born into a newspaper family and started

his career working for the family paper, The

Outlook, and later the Armagh Guardian

and the Belfast Telegraph. Fifty-three years

ago Alan emigrated to New Zealand and

picked up his career as a journalist with

the Manawatu Evening Standard in North

Island and then in South Island with the

Otago Daily Times.

The decision to emigrate followed a fam-

ily tradition to seek new pastures and new

challenges. His successful career took him

into the developing world of television

with NZBC newsrooms before heading to

the TV One newsroom in Dunedin. As a

retreat from his busy day job Alan bought

an old stone building in a valley close to

Queenstown, the major tourist centre

in the Southern Alps. But what was to be

place of relaxation became the epicentre

for a change of life for Alan - as the owner

of a wine business.

He embarked on pioneering work in South

Island growing grapes and despite experts

advising him against it, his gamble paid off

and, today, his Pinot Noir is recognised in-

ternationally.

Now in semi-retirement, Alan tells Walter

his story of amazing achievement and de-

termination against all the odds.

Walter says: “The fact that Alan Brady dis-

regarded well-meaning advice owes some-

thing to his character as an Ulsterman. He

proved the sceptics wrong. He may be stub-

born but he’s also a highly articulate com-

municator and an engaging man to talk to.”

Words To Wine can be heard on BBC Ra-

dio Ulster on Saturday, May 18 at 12.30pm.
