Speed Boat

If you are looking for a more adventurous experience during your travel, then you should consider a speed boat to make your trip more exciting. These services also offer private programs, making your trip more memorable and attractive. By hiring a speed boat you can be sure your travel around the island is a much better experience.

Unfortunately, tour speed boats are usually crowded, as are the locations that the tours go to and the boat operators run their day trips to a very tight schedule, not leaving you with enough time to truly enjoy your day. Chartering your own private speed boat offers you the flexibility to choose that perfect spot for snorkeling and swimming or just chilling on a secluded beach, away from the crowds.

Although it’s slightly more expensive than a normal tour, you get better value for money. You travel in smaller groups, visit places when the crowds have left, and often see places where the main tours don’t visit. A search for Phuket Speedboat Charters will turn up many companies providing inter-island charters and services.

The Speed Boats carry between 10 - 40 people, depending whether they are 2 or 3 engine. Transfers on-board a tour speedboat are typically between 1,500 to 2,500 baht depending on the destination, whereas speedboat charters to/from Phuket range from 3,000 baht to 60,000 baht depending on the distance you want to travel and also on the size of the boat.

Longtail Boat

Hiring a longtail Boat is the best way to explore the many hidden beaches and offshore islands around Phuket. You will fi nd longtail boats readily available for hire on most beaches around the Island. These small wooden boats are used to provide a number of marine services, including transporting tourists from beach to beach.

They are not very fast and they certainly aren’t what you would call a speedboat, but what they lack in speed they certainly make up for in sound. Longtails are cheaper than renting a speed boat, they may not be as comfortable or as fast but are a must do a least once while in Phuket.

The price of the boats tends to change with the seasons and the price will also depend on how well you can barter. It also depends on how far you’re going, how long you’re going for and how many people are in your group.

On average a longtail boat will cost around 900 to 2,000 baht depending on your destination. The boats usually carry up to 8 people, and life jackets are usually on board, if you can’t see them just ask the driver if he has life jackets to wear.

Phuket’s ferries can carry around 200 - 400 people and the price for a round trip costs around 800 - 2,500 baht depending on destination and season.

Please note that during low season, May to October, some ferries stop

running so it always best to check prior to arriving at your departure point. It is

usually the services which depart later in the day that are affected, so if you plan to

catch the early morning ferry you should be OK. It is also advisable to make sure you are

happy with the weather conditions and they are suitable for you to travel.

Where to find boat rentals in Phuket

Chalong PierSunrise Road starts at Chalong circle and ends at Chalong pier, Phuket’s principal boat anchorage location and the islands largest bay. Most visitors to the south of Phuket depart from Chalong pier. Charters to various places can be arranged from here, and it is the center of the islands yachting and diving businesses.

Rassada PierRassada Pier is the main hub to reach the Phi Phi Islands. Besides privately chartered boats, several ferry companies use it as the departure point to get to Phi Phi. The ferry

schedules are easy to follow and the boats generally run on time. There is normally a ferry in the morning and another shortly after midday.

Ao PorAt Ao Por there is a small pier used by longtail boats, speed boats and other tour boats that take tourists out on daytrips to islands in the Phang Nga Bay area.

Rawai BeachRawai Beach itself is only used to moor fi shing boats, long tail boats and speed boats which are used for snorkeling and sightseeing trips to Phuket’s neighboring islands.

Laem PanwaPeople come here to take boats to outlying islands. The main attraction of Cape Panwa is the tranquility but there is a pier at the southern end of the beach and longtails moor here.

Klong MudongIt is also possible to rent a longtail boat from Klong Mudong. Boats go out to the Phang Nga Bay area.

Phuket has a long history of multi-racial culture and there are many examples of this to be found in various spots around the island,

and there is one annual event that really brings out the best of the cultures that has made Phuket what it is today.



In celebration of its multicultural roots, Phuket’s first “Old Phuket Town Festival” was organised in 1998. This annual event has grown ever since with cooperation from the Phuket City Municipality, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office, Peranakan Association, Old Town Phuket community and Phuket Old Town Foundation. The festival now provides a well needed boost for Phuket’s heritage and culture. The festival is a celebration of the old Phuket style and is also an educational insight for those who wish to know more about the colonial days of South East Asia.

The special qualities of Old Phuket Town ingrain an extraordinary sense of belonging for those who grew up on the island. This is why the Old Phuket Town Festival is a must-visit event for those travelling through Phuket in

February, or those who live on the island wishing to know more of its illustrious history and colorful cultural identity.

The three-day festival coincides with the island’s Chinese New Year celebrations and sees Thalang, Krabi, Dibuk, Phang-Nga, Thepkrassatri and Phuket Roads turned into walking streets.

There is a unique community in Phuket, namely the ‘Baba’, with its own way of life, language, dress and food.

The core of this community was formed by early unions between Hokkien tin-miners and Siamese women. This distinctive ‘Baba’ heritage can be seen in Old Phuket Town. The festival also showcases the ‘Baba’

lifestyle with cultural parades, performing arts, live music, handmade goods, classic vehicles as well as traditional costumes, local Phuket foods and lots of fun activities. The festival is one of the most important events for local residents, government offices and private businesses to all join together.

Krabi Road focuses on “Stories of the Present”Krabi Road in the old town area has the Phuket Thai Hua Museum, originally a Chinese school. It features exhibits about the history of Phuket, concentrating particularly on the role Chinese immigrants played in Phuket’s development. The museum is located at one end of Krabi Road.

Phang-Nga Road is all about “Stories of the Future”Phang-Nga Road has the On-On Hotel, Phuket’s oldest hotel established in 1929. The other buildings in this area such as the restaurants, banks and shophouses all have original Sino- Portuguese architecture.

Dibuk Road has clothes and food made by the Thai Peranakan Association.Dibuk Road runs directly to the north of Thalang Road and is home to a number of popular eating establishments. This road also features a range of textile and art shops.

There are three main objectives of the festival: to develop and conserve Phuket’s culture, to promote the area, and to encourage all Phuket residents to contribute to the promotion of the Phuket Old Town.

There are four main streets used for the Old Town Festival, each of which has its own individual theme:

Thalang Road features “Stories of the Past”Thalang Road is known as Phuket’s ‘historical road’ and is located in Phuket City Municipality. It was formerly the trading center of Phuket and most of the houses located along this road were owned by wealthy Phuket people. The houses were built in Sino-Portuguese styles which refl ect unique combinations between Chinese and Portuguese architectures. It is also a good ex-ample of how much of a multicultural community the island became since native Thais, Chinese, Muslims, Indians, and Europeans started living together peacefully on the same road.

During the Old Phuket Town Festival, Thalang Road is closed off to cars and converted into a ‘walking street’, bringing back the ambience of when the old town bustled with pedestrians instead of cars. Entertainment starts at around 3pm daily, and continues through till midnight.

On the last day there are worships and prayers performed by devotees at the Hai Leng Ong open space near Dragon Park. So if you’re there and would like to view a different side of Phuket and its traditions, February is the time to head over to Phuket Old Town to catch all the action of the festival.

Sukko Yogo Centre, located at the Sukko Cultural Spa & Wellness, is dedicated to the teachings and lineage of Ashtanga Yoga, a style of yoga founded and popularized by

K. Pattabhi Jois, and often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga.

K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) began his studies with Krishnamacharaya in Mysore, India at the age of 12. He became the leading practitioner and teacher of Ashtanga yoga, which is a set series of poses done in a flowing Vinyasa style. His first western students began to arrive in Mysore in the early 1970s. After Pattabhi Jois died in 2009, his grandson Sharath took over the Ashtanga leadership role, including teaching the many students who continue to flock to Mysore to study with the master and deepen their practices.

Ashtanga means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit, referring to the eight limbs of yoga.

The Ashtanga MethodThe Ashtanga method stresses daily vinyasa flow practice using ujjayi breathing, mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and drishti.

the nose. The inhalations and exhalations are equal in duration, and are controlled in a manner that causes no distress to the practitioner.

Mula BandhaMula Bandha is a posture where the body from the anus to the navel is contracted and lifted up and towards the spine.

Uddiyana BandhaBandha is a term for the “body locks”, Uddiyana Bandha is the abdominal bandha, it involves, after having exhaled all the air out, pulling the abdomen under the rib cage by taking a false inhale while holding the breath and then release the abdomen after a pause.

DrishtiDrishti, or focused gaze, is a means for developing concentrated intention. It relates to the fifth limb of yoga concerning sense withdrawal, as well as the sixth limb relating to concentration.

The Ashtanga Series of Poses There are six different Ashtanga series of poses through which a student progresses at his or her own pace.

The first or primary series, called Yoga Chikitsa, which means yoga therapy, realigns the spine, detoxifies the body, and builds strength, flexibility and stamina. The series of about 75 poses takes an hour and a half to two hours to complete, beginning with sun salutations and moving on to standing poses, seated poses, inversions and backbends before relaxation.

The intermediate or second series is called Nadi Shodana, meaning nervous system purification. It cleanses and strengthens the nervous system and the subtle energy channels throughout the body. This series is only introduced when the primary series is strong. It follows the same progression (sun salutations, standing, sitting etc.) as the primary series, but introduces new poses and variations.

The four advanced series are called Sthira Bhaga, which means divine stability. Pattabhi Jois originally outlined two intensive advanced series, but later subdivided them into four series to make them accessible to more people. These series emphasize difficult arm balances and are only appropriate for extremely advanced students.

Although Michael is classed as teacher he doesn’t see himself as one. For him, there is always some-thing new to learn so he will always see himself as a student and he believes that all yoga teachers see themselves as students, even John Scott who taught him.

Michael has tried many forms of yoga but for him Ashtanga is the best. However, he told us that it is

not until after 6 months of daily practice that people will really begin to see what the real benefi ts of Ashtanga Yoga are compared to other forms. The classes Michael now teaches at Sukko Yoga Centre are both led and mysore. At led classes, the teacher will lead the class and instructs students in the order of the poses. Mysore classes can only be taken once students know the order of poses very well. Mysore classes are an opportunity for students to practice at their own pace and level of ability, but in the company of other students and with the encouragement and advice of a teacher, as needed. In the Mysore method, the student masters each pose in sequence and is given new poses to work on by their teachers as they become ready.

“Oh Aew”What is “Oh Aew? A sweet iced dessert made of fl our, banana, and a little seaweed.

But if you ask Phuketians one of the most popular answers you will get is a jelly like dessert but not exactly jelly. “Oh Aew” is made from a mixture of Oh Aew seeds, banana and gelatin. Oh-Aew jelly is softer, stickier and more delicious than normal jelly, possibly because all the ingredients used in its making are natural.

There are several ways in which “Oh Aew” is served including with red bean or black grass jelly and ice, or with red syrup on the top. “Oh Aew” is very cheap and you should expect to pay between 10-20 THB for a bowlful. Although saying that, if you’re reading this and you’re not in Phuket you may be disappointed as “Oh Aew” is pretty rare to fi nd outside of Phuket and in Phuket it can only be found in selected roadside stalls and restaurants in Downtown.

The underwater world is an attraction that draws thousands upon thousands of tourists to the south of Thailand. Although the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are both

important resources for food production, tourism, and transportation, unfortunately, there are some irresponsible locals and tourists who are prepared to put their waste and garbage in the sea, not only destroying the seas natural beauty but also affecting the sea’s marine life who mistake the garbage for food and eat it. It is now evident that the problem with waste and garbage left in the sea is beginning to affect marine tourism, and due to this, government

agencies, local government organizations, institutes, and diving operators have recently been holding activities which have seen large numbers of people diving to collect the garbage. Go Eco Phuket is one group who is actively involved in marine conservation and is continuously trying to motivate people to participate in activities to help reduce the amount of waste and garbage in the sea. The group is supported by Thai Navy Region 3, Phuket Marine Biological Centre, Phuket Marine Police, Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket Office, Phuket Provincial Administration Organization and

Dive Against DebrisPhuket’s first ‘Dive Against Debris’ event was held on September 30th 2012 as part of the worldwide September’s Debris Month of Action, and it saw 13 dive boats and over 650 divers and beach cleaners take part in the biggest

Dive Against Debris event in the world. At the end of the event, an incred-ible 15 tons of debris was removed, this was made up of fishing nets (one of which alone weighed 4.5 tonnes), plastic & glass bottles, steel cord and many other items!

After the event, the divers and Phuket community partied the night away at a sponsored event which saw famous local and national Thai bands drop in to show their support. $4,000 was raised, along with a generous donation of 30,000THB, for future Go Eco Phuket activities as well.

The Shop-House Hotels of Phuket Old Town

“Sino-Portuguese” style architecture was fi rst introduced to Phuket in the early 20th century. It was tin magnate and fi rst Hokkien Governor of Phuket Khaw Sim Bee Na Ranong, later given the royal title of Phraya Rasada Nupradit, who was instrumental in not only introducing this style of architecture to the island but also in bringing about the devel-opment of Phuket town, adding new roads and even enticing the Chartered Bank to open in Phuket.

At the time many Chinese migrants came to Phuket seeking to make their fortunes from Phuket’s lucrative tin mining industry and with them came their Hokkien culture and language.

Many of these migrants gained mine concessions and made fortunes from the industry. Some built huge mansions, whilst others set up shops-houses along in Thalang Road, what was at the time Old Phuket’s main commercial centre, and adjoining streets such as Soi Romanee. It was these buildings that were built using Sino-Portuguese style architecture.

Shop-houses are usually found built in rows, giving rise to the Hokkien Chinese term tiam choo, meaning a row of shop-houses. The shop-houses were originally used as a place for a family to both live and do business, using the front of the building for trading and the remainder, including the upper floor, as a private home.

known as five-foot walkways or ngoh kaa kee in Hokkien dialect, these arcades which join the shops together provide shade from the sun and shelter from the rain to the public.

All the shop-houses are roofed with clay brick tiles called Indian Profile. The door and window frames are decorated with Chinese fretwork designs. Two or three large and high window panes are normally built on the upper floor with distinctive designs mostly influenced by classical European architectures from the Classic Era (400 BC) to Art Dacor Era (1920-1939), Chinese and Indian arts together with Thai traditional art patterns. It is this perfect blend of different architectural styles and decoration patterns that gives stunning views to visitors.

Because street side space was at a premium, the shop-houses in all the rows were always very thin being only 5 meters wide, however, what they lacked in width they certainly made up for in depth with most being as long as 50 meters. Across the front of each of the shop-houses are covered arcades or arched colonnades,

“Soi Romanee”As with Thalang Road, Soi Romanee is also the site of a number of old “Sino-Portuguese” shop-houses and the name “Soi Romanee” conveyed great pleasure to those here during the booming mining era; its shop-houses were the nightclubs and bars for the miners. A number of the shop-houses have been restored back to their original glory but are now home to coffee shops or gift shops, whilst some

“Thalang Road”As mentioned earlier, Thalang Road was at one time Phuket’s main commercial centre and it is therefore seen as an important road in Phuket’s history.

It is along both sides of Thalang Road that you can still fi nd some of the fi nest examples of “Sino-Portuguese” architecture. Many of the shop-houses and arcades are just as they were in the past and the Chinese fretwork designs still feature on the front doors.

In the past year, in an to attempt to neaten up the roads of Phuket Old Town such as Thalang Road and make them more slightly, all the cables which could previously not be missed have now been put underground and the rows of shop-houses are now free from the unsightly wire clutter and have really neatened the locations up. The districts municipality office also campaigns for owners of the more unkempt shop-houses in the area to make an attempt to restore the beautiful buildings back to how they were in the past and to help make the whole length of Thalang Road a charming pedestrian street as it once was.

are still used as purely for living. It is very clear that although the lifestyles of the people who live in these shop-houses may have changed dramatically since they were built; it has certainly not affected the architecture of Soi Romanee.

The lively new colours used on the exteriors of the shop-houses of Soi Romanee really give them an amazingly pleasant look, and this is why to many Soi Romanee is regarded as the most beautiful and romantic road in Phuket town.


The usage of the ground floor space as a bar, café and contemporary art gallery can also be seen as a nod to acknowledge the bohemian origins of Soi Romanee.

Same buildings, different industryWhen the tin industry began to decline, a descendent of Khaw Sim Bee Na Ranong decided to expand Phuket’s opportunities and branched out into tourism opening the Pearl Hotel in Phuket Town in 1976. The Phuket Tourism Association was also formed to press the government and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to promote the island as a new travel destination.

By the 1980s, Phuket was promoted internationally and the government expanded the airport, improved road infrastructure, established international commu-nication links, and made the island resort much easier to get to.

Once Phuket’s tourism boom was well underway a small number of the owners of the Sino-Portuguese shop houses gave their crumbling buildings a new lease of life turning them into guesthouses which boast all the necessary modern amenities.

Phuket land covers a vast lush tropical, hilly landscape that offers some convenient locations, some private, some with sea views, or some with both. Many permanent residents prefer to

stay east of the hill range that separates the lovely West Coast from the rest of the island where all the commercial activity is. They have the advantage of easy access to Phuket town, shopping malls and facilities, and also a less crowded neighbourhood. The Chalong area in particular is favoured by locals, while places like the Kathu hillsides are a nice place for more up market secluded villas.

Land in Phuket and Thailand is always measured in tarang wa or rai. A wa is 2m in length and a tarang is ‘squared’, therefore 4m2 = a tarang wa, and there are

400 wa in a rai. A rai therefore is 1,600m2 and can also be split up into 4 ngan (of 100 wa each). Typically, a villa will occupy about 150 to 200 tarang wa. Thais prefer to spend most of their budget on the building and will therefore build a modest home on 100 tarang wa or less, but it’s not uncommon to develop on a whole rai with a nice tropical garden, depending on the area.

IN THE NAME OF COMPANYA foreigner may own land in Phuket in the name of Thai company (at least 51% of shares are Thai and 49% are foreign). This can be done as a Thai Limited Company or a registered Thai Partnership. The most common form of company registered in Thailand is the Thai Limited Company. If a company is going to support a work permit application, two million baht capital is required for each work permit.

BOARD OF INVESTMENT (BOI) A foreigner, who invests a minimum of at least one million Baht in Thailand for no minimum prescribed period of time, is entitled to buy up to 20 Rai of land for residential purposes for employees. However, they can only purchase 10 Rai for executives and directors of the Company. In addition, it should be noted that although it may be permissible to own up to 10 or 20 Rai, this depends on how large or small your company is and the

Thai law generally prohibits foreigners from owning freehold land in Thailand. However, there are various exceptions in the law regarding this issue. There are also other methods available for acquiring valid and legal rights to land in Phuket that do not amount to outright ownership.

MARRIED TO A THAI NATIONAl The Thai property law was amended to allow a foreigner with a Thai spouse to legally own land in Thailand. Nevertheless, the land must still be registered at the land offi ce in the name of the Thai national. The foreigner must also sign a declaration stating that the funds used in the purchase of such land were with the funds of the Thai National and not of the foreigner. lEASE Leasing is one option for a foreigner to acquire land. The foreigner in essence leases the land or house from whoever is named as owner of the land, namely the Thai national. The maximum duration of a lease under Thai property law is 30 years, with a possibility to renew again if agreed by the lessor. However, renewal periods are not effective in a contract and would more than likely be unenforceable. This is the least complicated option

for a foreigner to have a right of usage of land. A land leased over three years must be registered at the Land Department in order for it to be legally enforceable.

STRuCTuRED OwNERSHIPA company or the Thai spouse of a foreigner may grant a ‘Right of Superfi cies’ in favor of the foreigner, giving him the right to personally own all constructions situated on the land. By using this possibility, a foreign individual can be registered as the owner of a house without owning the land. The ‘Right of Superficies’ can be conceded for a period of 30 years and can be renewed for another 30 years (but not automatically). It must also be noted that although a superfi cies may be registered, this is still upon the discretion of the Land Offi cer at each Land Offi ce.

Before buying land, an essential step in the process is to conduct a Title Search. Since there are different levels of land title deeds, it is recommended to verify with the Land Department the type of title deed of the land which you are interested in acquiring and its legality. This step would provide more information about the land; for instance, whether it is under any obligation and also whether it is a freehold title or not. It is strongly recommended to contact a Lawyer or Solicitor to provide you with such information retrievable from the land department. However, before any such title search can be performed, a copy of the title deed must be presented.


Condominium Market Share in Phuket


• Power poles cost 3,000 THB each and have to be paid for by the land owner if the land is not on a government road. They need to be spaced out at intervals of no more than 30 meters. Wiring is extra.

• When you view land, make sure you are shown all the borders. Ask to see a copy of the title deed and get the estate agent to walk you around the perimeter. Ask to see things such as gullies, rock features, big trees etc and try to visualise a house built into the landscape. If you cannot do this then get somebody to do it for you.

• Only buy land if the title deed is of the type Nor Sor Sam, Nor Sor Sam Gor or Chanote.

• Avoid negotiating with the owner directly; let your lawyer and the real estate company handle this. They will understand the cultural pitfalls of dealing with the local people.

• Do not, under any circumstances, buy land with a Por Bor Tor Ha, or Sor Kor Nung title. It is illegal to build on land without the preferred titles, ownership is near impossible to achieve and border disputes will ruin your life.

Phuket has been home to the Chinese Hokkien for many years, and it is important for them to be able to worship their ancestors and more

importantly their gods. It is because of this that there are a large number of Chinese shrines to be found around the island. These shrines are sacred to those of Chinese descent and it is here where they come to worship gods such as Guan Au and Guan Yin. of incense and candles which are sold in large number at all the stores every day. Most people will

worship the gods in the morning and evening. However, during the time of Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival statues of the gods, of which there are a great number which vary in price, will see a large increase in sales due to there being a number of sacred ceremonies about them throughout the festival. Situated not far from the center of Phuket Town is Rang Hill, known amongst Thais as Khao Rang.

The main spectacle of Rang Hill is at its peak, where you will be welcomed by a sight of pure nature, from what is now a municipal park, and makes for the perfect photo backdrop. Due to its expansive grass areas, much of which is shaded by centuries old trees, the park is a great place to picnic. Also in the park is a bronze statue of Phraya Ratsada Nupradit- who was appointed Governor of Phuket in 1902, during the reign of King Rama V, and was also the first to bring rubber trees to the island.

It is also from the top of Rang hill that you will be provided with possibly the most spectacular & breathtaking panoramic views over Phuket town, and which stretch to the southern end of the island, as far as Laem Panwa and Ao Chalong Bay.
