Chayuth Kaewklin, also known as Aroon, is the

Managing Director of Window Design and Awnings, one of Thailands leading tension membrane products

(awnings) providers. The company takes care of

customers in Phuket, throughout Thailand and overseas.

Chayuth is originally from Phuket, born and raised here. He

started his career many years ago right after graduating and

just like many young people he began his working li fe as an

    employee.

How did it all begin? After I graduated (in electrical power engineering) I began

my career with some of the big name companies such Tesco

Lotus and Central Festival, to name a couple, until I felt thatI was ready to start my own business.

Why the awnings business?I researched the market for opportunities. Back then in

2009, my last job as an employee was as the regional

manager for Mr. Curtain. I saw a future in the curtainbusiness but at the same time I could see interesting

prospects in the tension membrane industry. Then Idecided to venture in awnings and curtains. I looked for a

shortcut, a model that could help pave my way to success

so I became a dealer for Thailands leading company in

tension membrane products. Now Im not their dealer

anymore Im delivering my own products.

    Social- Insight

Why tension membrane products?Tension membrane products feature a design without utilisinga metal frame but rather stretched canvas. Its innovative and

trendy. Tension membrane products are beautiful, light, and

stylish. They might come at a higher cost, but tension membrane

products deliver solutions that metal sheet frame cant.

We often see tension membrane products used in important

    places as theyre simply outstanding.

Why Phuket?First, Im originally from here. Second, most of my connections

are here but now that my business has managed to grow I have

dealers in other provinces. I have partners who help me with

the designs and marketing, and that helps me sell my products

    throughout Thailand and overseas.

Whats your tip for success? In doing business, first you need to get yourself ready, get your spirit right. Second, be diligent. Third are the

connections. Last is your source of capital. I started this

business with only 200,000 baht and a shop-house but

after five years I have my own showroom. How come

I got this far? The answers are above; you just have to

be brave enough to start out.

of about 4000sqm. If were talking about four- or five-star hotels

in Phuket, we could reach the expectations of a six-star resort

but I think weve already done that at Iniala Beach House

(In Phang Nga province). Anyway, I dont think weve reached

the limit of our potentials yet. Were still passionate about design.

What about your goals?Well continue with in the awnings business but youll see new

solutions on the market from us, I promise.

What are your working principles?Be sincere to both your customers and your staff and the rest will

    follow

How do you manage your time?I spend almost all of my time involved in my business but do

enjoy going on big-bike trips with friends. However, I certainly

dont forget my family and try to spend as much time aspossible with them - theyre my life, my motivation and myinspiration.

Your message to the new generation?Have your spirit ready. All obstacles are just steps to bypass.

    Travelers diarrhea is a gastroin-

testinal infection that is the most

    common illness affecting travelers.

    Each year between 20%-50% of

    international travelers, an estimated

    10 million persons, have bad

    experiences with diarrhea.

What are the symptoms? The symptoms of travelers diarrhea vary.

Generally diarrhea occurs within the first weeek of

travel and last up to 3-4 days. Affected individuals

on average pass up to 5 loose or watery bowel

movement per day which may be associated

withcramps. On occasion, individua ls may

experience fever or bloody stools. The diarrhea maybe accompanied by abdominal pain and cramping,

bloating, or increase in stomach or vomiting.

Why does it happen? This symptoms occurs as a result of unsanitary

handling of food. Food handlers who do not wash

their hands after they use the bathroom can transmit

the infection to people who consume the contaminated

food. The most common bacterium that causes

travelers diarrhea is enterotoxigenic E. coli, V.

    parahaemolyticus and Clostridium botulinum

How to treat diarrheaWhen treating afflicted individuals, drugs that

alleviate symptoms as well as antibiotics play a role.

With moderate symptoms, the addition of Bismuth

    subsalicylate alone may suffice. Alternatively,

anti-diarrheal agents such as loperamide (Imodium)

can be given. With severe disease, characterized by

frequent diarrhea or dehydration, or complicated by

the passage of bloody stools, Imodium should not

be used and you should consult your pharmacist.

As with all diseases, it is best to consult a pharmacist

rather than attempting to self-medicate for travelers

diaarhea. This is especially relevant for pregnantwoman and children

How to prevent diarrhea?Food is the major source of infection, Food sould

be well-cooked and served warm. Raw befetables,

uncooked meat or seafood and other foods maintained

at room temperature should be avoided. Dairy

products, tap water and ice (including frozen drinks

not made from filtered water) are also high-risk foods.

and tea, fruits that can be peeled, and canned products

generally are safe. Although prophylactic antibiotics

(antibiotics taken before the person is exposed to the

pathogen) are effective in preventing travelers diarrhea,

they generally are not recommended. In some situations

drugs of quinolone class (levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin) orBismuth subsalicylate have been shown to be effective.

Phuket PineapplesUnique in the WorldUnique i

Phuket pineapples are unique for their

sweetness, aroma, colour and texture; theyrecertainly very different from other nationwide and worldwide

varieties, so much so that several international airlines insist on

serving only Phuket pineapples. As these pineapples can only be found

in Phuket, the government launched a project to improve and enhance the

quality and to promote them as a unique Phuket crop.

On November 27, 2552 (2009) Phukets pineapples were officially announced as a separate

entity by the Department of Intellectual Property. Now the islands pineapple plantation

owners are working together to use the same tactics in pineapple planting in order to

preserve the pineapples character and to increase its value. Not only will this benefit the

farmers but it also helps consumers obtain premium quality goods.

To buy Phuket pineapples you can easily find them downtown Phuket at the large

market on Ranong Road or at roadside fruit stands. Along Thepkasattri Road

(the thoroughfare leading to Phuket International Airport) is another

good place to buy them. But the best place to find this luscious

fruit at super cheap prices is just over the Sarasin Bridge in

Phang Nga Province where youll find dozens of stands

selling not only pineapples but freshly caught crabs!

    Red Lipstick

This is my signature item and almost a part of me. I have to meet people all the time and

makeup helps build my confidence and boosts my personality. On a hectic day, lipstick savesmy life. Red for me is auspicious; it means power and it gives me con fidence.

    Buddha Pendant

    I believe in sacred power.

    The pendant, which I always

wear, helps reminds me todo good and stay conscious

    of every move I make.

WristwatchTime is very important to me so

my watch is necessary for my

daily routine as I have quite a lot of

    appointments with customers and

    business partners. The watch itself

is simple and not too stylish and fits

with almost anything I choose to

wear so I like it very much.

    Niello Bangle

I received my Niello bangle as

a present from my family when

    I graduated from university

    some years ago. Its priceless

to me and Im never without it.

    Key Ring

    I sometimes cant

    find what Im looking

for so I use this keyring. Its quite big,

    so its easy to find

yet it can fit in my

    pocket.

    Cap

    Also an important item that

I like to have it with me, mycap helps me to stand out

    and protects me from heat,

    the sun and the rain.

    My Style

I dress creatively according to the need and occasion.

I think dressing is a kind of communication in that you can tell

everybody about yourself. It should reflect your personality,

your preferences, your style and at the same time it should

fit well with different places and whats happening.

    My Smart Red Dress

Sometimes the event or appointment just happens without

prior notice or with such short notice that it doesnt to allow

you much time to prepare for it. I found this red dress goes

    Tomato Ragout

100g Fresh Roma tomato (no skin)

    20g Red onion

    5g Garlic

    50ml Red wine

    5g Brown sugar

    20g Black Kalamata olives

    5g Italian fresh basil

    1g Salt

    1g Black crashed pepper

    Roasted Potato

250g Young potatoes with skin (cut in to )

    2g Fresh Thyme herb

    2g Fresh Rosemary herb

    20ml Olive oil

    10g Fresh Butter

    1g Salt

    1g Black crashed pepper

    Method

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Wash your potatoes in cold water to get ridof any extra starch, tip your potatoes into a

tray or pan in one layer, and add your olive

oil and butter then season really well with

salt and pepper. Toss your potatoes in the olive oil, butter,

thyme, rosemary and mix all up. Put your potatoes in

the hot oven to cook for 30 minutes until lightly golden

and crispy. Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper to

drain off some of the excess oil.

Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large,

heavy skillet and add the onions. Cook, stirring

often, until they have softened and begun to

color slightly, 8 to 10 minutes. Add a generous

pinch of salt and the garlic and cook, stirring,

until the garlic is fragrant, 30 seconds to a minute. Stir in the

tomatoes, olives, sugar, red wine, half the basil and more

salt and pepper to taste and bring to a simmer.

Simmer uncovered, stirring often, until the sauce has cooked

down a bit and is very fragrant, about 15 minutes. Remove

from the heat and pour over the black cod fish. Sprinkle on

the remaining basil. Place the black cod in oven for about 12

    minutes.

Serve the black cod with roasted potato and tomato ragout

    on top.

Pat the fish dry and season to taste with

salt and pepper. Oil one or two baking

dishes large enough to accommodate the

fish in one layer. Lay the fish in the dish

and pour on the lemon juice and the olive

oil. Refrigerate for 30 -40 minutes while you prepare the

    remaining ingredients.

Its been three years since Crazy Fur started upto provide creative solutions for both indoors and

outdoors dcor for Phuket. Phuketindex thinksits an interesting company and asked KhunNawaphorn (or Note) to share its story with us.

    NawaphornNamwan (Note)

How it beganIt all comes from our experience as designer

when we were often faced with the problem

    that contractors and developers couldnt

manufacture our creations and ideas. They

tended to refuse our requests most of the time

when it came to difficult or unusual designs.

I thought then, well why not doing it ourselves?

Im a DIY person so I started to learn more

    about making of furniture.

I began with small mock-up furniture and

gradually bought more and more tools and

equipment. I found it was a lot of fun and had a

good time sorting through computer programs

    relating to this project.

From a hobby to a serious projectAfter Id acquired a few tools and a small

amount of equipment, I felt that I needed more

and began looking for bigger machines but

then I found my design studio was too small

to fit them all in! I needed more space and so

looked around and now we have our own

    factory at Boat Plaza.

Whats good about us?What makes us different is that we ourselves

are the designers not just the manufacturers.

When the customers come to us, they can

expect not only products but also consultancy

in terms of details, proportions, aesthetics and

more. We quite have reputation for this within

the design world. We cater to creations by

designers or architects and you could say that

we speak the same language as them.

ObstaclesWe recognise the high cost of labour and

materials. Everyone knows that cost of living in

Phuket is comparatively high but we manage to

counter this by keeping the quality of both our

    products and service well balanced.

Future plansWe plan to expand of course but I prefer to

take it step by step as we still would still liketo stick with special and customized designs

rather than going into mass produce items that

all look the same. We have plans to expand

our factory and are looking for new innovative

materials to improve our furniture customization

possibilities. In the near future Crazy Fur will

offer our customers solutions in this field. We

can help polish, do touch-ups or even to simply

add more value with cost-effective methods.

What kind of furniture? We mainly produce a big variety of decorative

products such as interior partitions, exteriordecorative grille panels and faade cladding.

Words for young-blood designersI always think that to be a good designer you need to learn by

doing. I sometimes see the new generation is stuck with designing

on paper but you cannot make creations out of paper a lone.

Materials have their limitations also but by actually doing it

the solving process will be learned. Id like to see something

different from them, not just mixing and matching from the

    mass products on the market.

The classic Western architecture you can see in

Phuket in the shape of old Sino-Portuguese mansions

his the result of influences ranging from English and

Dutch design schools to Chinese beliefs and pragma-

tism. This results in an interesting and rich blend of colonial-

era architecture. The Chinese influences are fairly obvious

and are a direct result of the large influx of Chinese workers

and labour leaders who came to cash in on the tin-mining

boom of a couple of centuries ago. Most of the newcomers to

the island in those days were from the south of China Hok-

kien province. If you look closely at these old buildings youll

see a fascinating mlange of spiritual belief and practicality.Youll also see little flourishes above window frames of Nam

Tao patterns, fire pearls, flowers, and reliefs of various animals.

The byword in those days was adaptability as architects melded

together several different cultures and styles. A dominant feature

of this architectural style is often noted at the faade of buildings

in the shape of a five-foot long curved indent known as a ngor

kar khee in the Greek Ionic style and youll also notice typical

Corinthian embellishments of sculpted leaves and foliage.

The islands remaining Sino-Portuguese mansions are typical of

the practice in the past of merging of Chinese practicality with

Western designs. Several Chinese practices such as leaving a

wide open space in the middle of the house for cooling purposesare noticeable.

The first periodis in the beginning

of King Rama IVs reign. Constructionduring this time showed a strong Chinese

    pragmatic influence which often resulted

    in one- or two-storey buildings.

The second periodis from the end of

King Rama IVs reign until the King Rama

VI period. At that time Western architecture wasbeginning to become popular and the faade

of buildings was embellished by Greek-Roman

touches such as graceful curves in windows and

    doors with stucco above them.

The third period is during the early reign of King

Rama VII. Designers brought in lower faade decorationsand incorporated a verandah, with lower-floor open spaces

    emphasized.

The last periodis at the end of

King Rama VIIs reign and into

the reign of Rama VIII. Stuccowas still incorporated, along with the

Western-style use of mirrors and the

    use of a verandah.

Rama VIII. So we can group them into four types:

Phuket City Hall is largely similar to Phuket Provincial

Court building and has the distinction of being the

very first reinforced-concrete building in what was

then known as Siam. It was constructed in the period

of King Rama IV, when the iconic and noteworthy

Phra Rasdanupradit Mahisorn Bhakdi (Kosimbi Na

    Ranong) was governor of Phuket.

    Phukets commercial buildings are

often designed to be slim to avoid

paying tax on their width (one can

    discern the Dutch influence here).

They had deep, functional interiorsand were often three-storey affairs.

    Sino-Portuguese commercial buildings can

be widely found around Phuket Town along

Phang-Nga Rd., Krabi Rd., Deebuk Rd.,

    and Yaowarat Rd.)

Phuket has about 10 Sino-Portuguese mansions

left. These were the elegant abodes of peoplewhod made good on the island. Known as Ung

Mor Lhao, the people who inhabited these stately

buildings were more than likely millionaires.

There are several gorgeous mansions in Phuket
