It was in April 1995 that the island saw its very rst

Phuket Bike Week, the grandest event of its kind

in the South-East Asia region. The event saw 300

riders congregate at Mitthrapap Beach also known

as Friendship Beach, in Rawai. There were a few

participants who belonged to two local biker groups,

the Phuket Riders and the Sun of Chewa, but the

majority of bikers who joined the rst Phuket Bike Week

were tourists who rode their bikes from neighbouring

countries to partake in the event and visit Phuket Island.

Nearly two decades later, the 19th Phuket Bike Week

2013 ASEAN Ride Together became the biggest

motorcycle event not only in Thailand but in Asia. The

event attracted over 5,000 motorcycles and more than

30,000 visitors from 26 countries. Recent Big Bike

Weeks feature a number of entertaining activities to

keep the bikers happy both on and off their machines

such as the popular Miss Phuket Bike Week competition,

tattoo and custom bike shows, a motorbike exhibition,

a ride for peace and global warming, a sand sculpture

contest, beach parties and a music festival. The activities take

place around the Patong area every year and attract TV and media

    from both Thailand and overseas.

The organizers are now also backed by the Tourism Authority of

Thailand (TAT) whose main task is ensure that Phuket Bike Week

is included in their calendar of major events in Thailand and to

ensure that the event is promoted around the world well in advance.

Phuketindex.com had an opportunity to chat with Mr.Wittaya

Singkalah or Sumon, the main coordinator of Phuket Bike Week,

about his big bike background and the increasingly popular Phuket

    Bike Week.

Since childhood I dreamt that someday I would own and ride a big

bike, something I believe is a dream of many boys and men. Whenyou ride a big bike you know what it feels like to be free, and when

you hear the sound of the engine you know that is the power which

will take you where you want to go. I worked hard to help create the

wealth I needed to live my childhood dream, big bikes come with

a big price tag and you really have to be passionate about them

to want to own them. I have also been lucky enough to bring the

main passion in my life into my everyday life by running a business

which sells and services big bikes. This business opportunity has also

allowed me to make more friends and meet people from all walks

of life. When I realised there were so many people who shared my

passion for big bikes, I also realised there was a serious

lack of activities for big bike lovers. Therefore, my team and I devoted

a lot of our time organising big bike festivals. We hoped that by doing so we wouldhelp to develop Phuket, my hometown, and its tourism industry.

W d f pepes des wrds ds b be sce?

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the general attitude towards the big bike society is that

people look at these people, the way they dress, many with their tattoos and leather

jackets, and they think they are bad people. However, i f you look beyond this and

actually take the time to get to know them you will realise that the majority are really

good guys. They have good hearts and many participate in a number of social and

charitable activities. Furthermore, big bike riders are people who have discipline on

the roads and respect trafc rules. 20 years ago there

were fewer than 10 big bike riders in Phuket; today we

have 36 big bike clubs with a combined membership of

thousands of people in Phuket alone and tens of thousands

in the ASEAN region, if these people really are so bad I

think you would hear a lot more negative things about

    them.

hw dd be Pe Be Wee?

Back in 1995 the Phuket Riders Club and the Immortals

Thailand Club decided to organize a group ride with

motorcycle riders from Bangkok, Malaysia, Singapore

and the USA. Originally our big bike group rode together

to different nearby countries such as Malaysia and

Singapore, as well as other major cities in Thailand, but

we thought it would be better if we could chose a citywhich could become a base for our big bike meetings

and it was agreed that Phuket would be the ideal location

as it has international standard hotels & resorts, plenty

of restaurants which cater for all tastes, and all other

necessary facilities needed to support the bikers. The

original ride in 1995 involved around 150 big bikes and

about 300 visitors, which we felt was a successful start,

the event has continued to grow over the years and

Phuket is now known all over the world as the city for

    big bike lovers.

    W re e bjecves f e er eve?

The festival is organised jointly by Phuket Province,

Patong Municipality, Phuket Big Bike Club, the Phuket

Riders Club, and Ride Thailand magazine and its main

aim is to bring together big-bike lovers from across

Thailand and around the world. Phuket Big Bike Week

is now a major event in the Phuket calendar and it

brings a lot of good things for Phuket, in many different

ways, including injecting at least 600 million baht into

the economy every year. Other objectives of the events

    are to promote travel and tourism in Phuket and Thailand;

create greater unity for bikers worldwide; promote safer

riding (with helmets on heads and lights on bikes) and

organize charitable activities to raise funds for schools

    for underprivileged children in Phuket.

As Thailand is preparing to join the Asean Economic

Community (AEC) initiative in 2015, and many bikers

come across the borders, especially from nearby Singapore

and Malaysia, it was decided that the theme until then

should be ASEAN Ride Together. I believe that our big

bike group is now recognized throughout the ASEAN

    region and

    this had led

    to a large

    number

    of cultural

    exchanges,

    including

    business

    negotiations

    which have

    led to anexpansion in

    investments

    because

    most bikers

owns their own businesses. Moreover, it is held under this

theme in order to expand our big bike community and to

build a strong group that will be recognized in the various

countries that make up ASEAN. When we all come together

as one it will be so much better.

    Chinese Hand Puppets in Phuket

    Art &Culture

    hsr f Cese Pppe Sws

Called a marionette show in ancient China, a

puppet show is a theatre performance in which

puppet gures are made to move by puppeteers pulling

strings or by putting their hands inside them.

In China, the origin of puppets dates back to the Shang

Dynasty, when the custom of burying slaves alive with

their deceased masters was practiced. Of the 3,000

funeral objects excavated from the Yin Ruins in Anyang

City, there are pottery gurines of slaves with cangues.

In the Warring States Period, there appeared entertaining

gurines used in story-telling and singing performancesas props. And such art forms became popular. After the

Han Dynasty, a puppet show gradually developed into a

folk art combining opera, literature, sculpture and painting

that appealed to both humans and divinities.

During the Three Kingdoms Period, there were

water-driven one hundred plays featuring exquisitely-made

puppets performing humanlike singing, dancing and

acrobatics. In the Song Dynasty, puppet shows enjoyed

an unprecedented boom, with a wide variety of puppet

types used in the plays, including string puppets, rod

puppets, water puppets, pyrotechnic puppets, iron stick

puppets, glove puppets and flesh puppets etc.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, puppet plays caught

on in all areas. By integrating with local operas, variouskinds of regional puppet plays came into being, such as

Heyang string puppet plays of Shaanxi, and Zhangzhou

glove puppet plays of Fujian. Puppet shows also advanced

with the times. After movies came into being, they found

their way into the movie eld, creating an increased impact

    of puppet shows.

In former times, a puppet show was one of the most

popular entertaining art forms enjoyed by rulers and

commoners. Such shows were usually staged on

occasions like sacricial rituals and festive banquets,

adding colour to peoples life. In modern times, however,

puppet shows suffered decline due to war chaos. But theycaught on again shortly after the war.

After 1949, except for a handful of private puppet troupes,

most others were restructured as government-funded

troupes. While retaining traditional plays, these puppet

troupes created a large number of modern plays, also

    known as civilized new plays.

    Chinese Hand Puppets in Phuket

    Art &Culture

a new geer f PppeeersChinese hand puppets are modeled on characters from

Chinese operas, and each puppets style of clothing

and make-up represents a different character from

the operas. Furthermore, there are also shows andperformances that have been written strictly for Chinese

    puppet shows.

In the past, one of the most famous kinds of Chinese

hand puppet performances to be found in Phuket was

Garle Puppet, usually performed at Chinese shrines.

However, nowadays they are hard to nd due to their

    lack of success.

Khun Likhit Larleang, a teacher at Satree Phuket School

is one person, of a very small group, who can perform a

garle puppet show. He learnt how to perform the show

from the Chinese shrines he visited when he was a young

boy, and he realizes that the hand puppet culture does

not have a generation to carry it on, and that there is a

possibility that it could be lost in the not too distant future.

In view of this, Khun Likhit now offers garle puppet training

to students who are interested in the local arts and culture.

He said Im a Phuketian who grew up with Chinese

culture, which has influence on the local community.

When the Chinese shrines held traditional ceremoniesgarle puppet shows were one of the best parts and they

brought me so much happiness. Although its only a small

show it generates a smile to all those that watch. Today,

as a teacher, I think bringing the science and art of garle

puppets to young people in Phuket will bring a spark back

into this part of culture, and it will show society that puppet

shows have not disappeared but are once again being

brought back into the lives of many children. I teach students

the basics of garle puppet shows, showing them the

importance of the puppets movements being in time with

the rhythm of the music. At least by showing them this, the

students will be able to put on a real show in front of the

    public.Khun Likhit Larleang

ab e SwsIn general, a show needs two performers: the main

performer who is the chief or director of the troupe and

is in charge of the whole show, including manipulatingthe main puppets, singing and narrating. The supporting

performer manipulates the puppets to coordinate with the

main performer, changes the costumes of puppets, and

takes care of the stage. The puppets are operated with

two hands, one hand operating the puppets head and

hands, and the other operating the legs.

The puppets perform on a highly decorative stage,

accompanied by a small orchestra comprising of a gong,

pipe and drum. The backstage music is controlled by the

drum player. The drummer needs to pay attention to what

is going on in the plot and uses the drum to conduct the

other musicians. They follow the rhythm of the sets.

In terms of stories, the Chinese string puppet

shows mainly adapt literature classics. One of the

most popular shows is The Romance of the Three

Kingdoms, a 14th-century Chinese epic novel about

the century of war, turmoil, and bloodshed known as

the Three Kingdoms Period (188-280 AD).

The tale begins in the last days of the corrupt Han

Dynasty, showing how the government and Emperor

lost the Mandate of Heaven, and the land fell into

anarchy, with various warlords carving out their own

territories in a struggle for supremacy. Gradually,

out of the chaos, three kingdoms take shape: thekingdom of Shu, led by the virtuous Liu Bei (a distant

cousin of the Emperor) and his sworn brothers,

Guan Yu and Zhang Fei; the k ingdom of Wei, led

by the scheming Cao Cao; and the kingdom of Wu,

led by the ambitious Sun family. All seek to unify the

nation for one reason or another, and claim the right

to rule for their own. And so the three kingdoms

contend with one another over the century, and

heroes rise and fall in the strife, until the nation is

    nally reunied.

of Thanyapuras Integrative Health Center (TIHC).

Phuketindex.com was privileged to have recentlybeen invited by Thanyapura to conduct an interview

I am a medical doctor with degrees in six medical

    specialties: gynaecology, psychiatry, genetics,

endocrinology, sports medicine and natural medicine

    Dr. mce keze

and I practiced in each these elds for several years. However,

more recently I became involved with research in neurochemistry,

genetics and stem cells. Im very proud and honoured to say

that I owned the first Anti-Aging (AA) Clinic in Europe, the

Klentze Institute, which was founded in 1995. From 2008 to

2011 I functioned as International Medical Director at Vitallife

(Bumrungrad Hospital, Bangkok), where I was responsible for

    developing treatments, diagnostic programs, pharmacological

    products and more.

I founded a number of further AA clinics worldwide (Madrid,

Barcelona, Istanbul, Houston) and supported many clinics in

scientic knowledge in this area. I supported hormone therapy

in preventive medicine in Europe, working as consultant for

Pzer, and it was my honour to be co-founder and secretary

general of the European Society of Preventive, Regenerative

and Anti-Aging Medicine (ESAAM) along with President

the body. Inammation is all over

the body, always. There is no isolated

inammation. A rotten tooth can create

    heart problems, joint problems,

immune problems and more. Chronicinammation is one cause of aging,

thats why some people call aging

    inammaging.

What is your main duty as Chief

Medical and Scientific Officer ofThanyapura Integrative Health

    Centre?

    I am responsible for developing

    the programs for diagnostics and

    treatments, and also overseeing the

    treatments. I am also responsible

for driving the scientic backgroundof the clinic. However, saying that

the clinic also has another branch,

    the KLENTZE MEDICAL FACULTY

(KMF), and it is from the KMF here in Phuket that we

teach doctors from all over the world in preventive,

regenerative and Anti-Aging Medicine. Phuket has

become the capital of Anti-Aging, from where the

science, education and clinical training are released.

This brings a higher reputation to the island and more

students, who study under KMF and TIHC.

What does the Thanyapura Integrative HealthCentre offer and for who can benefit from its

    services and in what way?

Under the previously mentioned tasks, it is understand-

    able that the

    clinics software

    follows the 80

    medical protocols,which we call

    professional

medical instructions. These protocols for diagnostics

and treatments are always updated and contain cutting

    edge medical science.

I develop the scientic programs for Internationalconferences in Thailand, e.g. A4M Thailand. As I

have treated many patients worldwide, my name has

became a brand in this clinical eld and many patients

are now focused on coming to see me here in

Thanyapura, where I am supported by our Thai medical

Director, to get recommendations, consultations and

treatments in order to maintain their health and get old

in a way of high quality of life, health and happiness.

It doesnt matter if a patient is 6 or 60, our unique

treatment programs will optimise health through using

    individualised testing and supplementation.

    for Thailand I became

    the Honorary President

    of ESAAM.

    How I ended up at

TIHC is a lot simpler to

    explain than my previous

    careers, my friend Klaus

    Hebben, chairman of

    Thanyapura, asked me

    to join the Thanyapura

    team and develop the

    scientic

    medical basis

    of the center.

    Since August

    last year I

    have been

    leading the

    team here where they

    offer the basics of

    preventive medicine:

    exercise, diet and mind

    caring in a holistic way.

Could you explain what an Integrative Health Centeris exactly?

The current medical concept is: create specialists for every

organ and forget the basics: that is, all organs and its

functions are connected with each other. We work in the

eld of preventive and regenerative medicine, reviewing the

bodys functions with a holistic approach. If you have pain in

the knees, the teeth can be the cause, as you bite and the

muscle tension leads to relaxation or tension in other parts of

    Phuket has become the

    capital of Anti-Aging

    Beauty &WellnessDr. Michael Klentze

Could you tell us about your Preventive

medicine testing and how it works?

Prevention means: seeing into the future. How can we do it? We use the most advanced

laboratory technology in the world to carry out

genetic tests; by using these advanced tests

we are able to go into the very depth of the

cell, which enables us to detect tendencies of

upcoming diseases in later years, something

which regular hospital blood tests cannot do.

We will then prescribe 3 months worth of

    nutritional, hormonal and pharmaceutical

formulas, made by the most advanced

pharmacies in Europe and Asia, to treat a

patients condition and which suit each patients

blood test results. It is important to point out

that the medicine has to be personalized, notone shoe ts everybody. So in opposition to

    mainstream medicine, everybody gets custom

    tailored treatments.

You must have seen manyadvances in medical

science since you beganpracticing, how muchmare advanced do you

    believe it can get?

    Science develops rocket like.

    From hormone treatment for

older men (which was believed to be dangerous in the old days

and is now a treatment called Andropause, and recognises

that male hormone deciency is similar to that of the females

menopause) to genetic testing, personalized medicine, bio

identical hormone treatment , mitochondrial testing, dried spot

tests (easily usable tests with which we are able to measure

nearly 60% of all lab test with only one drop of either urine, saliva

or blood) which are extremely good for

shipping to other countries as blood

does not keep fresh for a long time.

What does the future hold for

    Dr. Michael Klentze in medical

    terms?

We are currently developing a special

    cell-peptide treatment for Skin

    Rejuvenation and Anti Aging; stem

cell banking has become a personal

    apothecary for everyone. With this

development we are able to treat all

diseases of the body with your own

    cells, rejuvenate the body and

rejuvenate the beauty of skin and the

    whole body shape.

I personally wish that everyone would

    understand the importance and

priority of prevention. Being sick is

an endpoint of a long unknown story, playing in the depths of the cell. With new detection methods we

might be able to diagnose diseases of later years very early and

prevent the outbreak of a disease, stop a relapse of cancer or

    diabetes, heart disease and more.

Based on the triad of sport, diet and mind, I have found great

support in Thanyapura, its chairman, its president and the

    wonderful team.

    Chromotherapy Healing by Colour

Chromotherapy, sometimes called colour therapy or

colourology, is based on the premise that certain

colours are infused with healing energies. The

therapy uses the seven colours of the rainbow to

promote balance and healing in the mind and body.

Our Chromotherapy lights are operated via a separate touch

pad which allows you to select individual colours or a loop of

the six colours changing individually. The light(s) are securely

xed to the interior of the bath and are nished in chrome.

A water level sensor feature prevents the lights being run

    without water in the bath.

Colour therapy is rooted in Ayurveda. Ayurveda is based on

the idea that every individual contains the ve basic elements

of the universe: earth, water, air, re, and ether (space).

These elements are present in specic proportions unique

to an individuals personality and constitution. When these

elements are thrown out of balance through unhealthy living,

habits or outside forces, illnesses are the result. Ayurvedic

medicine uses the energies inherent in the colours of the

    spectrum to restore this balance.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), each organ is

associated with a colour. In qigong, healing sounds are

also associated with a colour, which in turn corresponds

to a specic organ and emotion.

Each of the seven colours of the spectrum is associated

    with specic healing properties.

    Vilet

Violet promotes enlightenment, revelation, and spiritual

awakening. Holistic healthcare providers use violet to

soothe organs, relax muscles, and calm the nervous

    system.

    Idig

Indigo is also sedative and calming. It is said to promote

intuition. Indigo may be useful in controlling bleeding and

    abscesses.

    Ble

Blue promotes communication and knowledge. It eliminates

toxins, and is used to treat liver disorders and jaundice.

    Chromotherapy Healing by Colour

    Gee

Because it is located in the middle of the

colour spectrum, green is associated with

balance. Green is calming, and is used byAyurvedic practitioners to promote healing

of ulcers. It is said to have antiseptic,

    germicide, and antibacterial properties

and is sometimes used by holistic colour

    therapists to treat bacterial infections.

    Yellw

Yellow is a sensory stimulant associated

with wisdom and clarity. Yellow is thought

    to have decongestant and antibacterial

properties, and is useful in stimulating both the

digestive system and the lymphatic system.

    ogeOrange promotes pleasure, enthusiasm,

    and sexual stimulation. Ayurvedic practitio-

ners believe it has antibacterial properties

and may be useful in easing digestive system

    discomforts (e.g., flatulence, cramps).

    red

    Red promotes energy, empowerment,

and stimulation. Physically, it is thought to

improve circulation and stimulate red blood

    cell production.

    Decipti: The colour spectrum is

    composed of different frequencies and

wavelengths of light energy. Ayurvedic med-

icine uses the energy of colours to promote

harmony and healing. The colours are said

to be imbued with certain healing properties

(i.e., red is energizing, blue is calming) and

the vibrations generated by each colour

    balance the individual.

    Holistic healthcare providers who practice

colour therapy often relate the seven

colours of the colour spectrum to specic

areas of the body known as the chakras.

In yoga, the chakras are specic spiritualenergy centers of the body. The therapeutic

action of colours is related to the chakra

    they represent:

first (root; or base of spine): red

    second (sacral; or pelvis/groin area):

    ge

    third (solar plexus) chakra: yellow

    fourth (heart) chakra: green

    fifth (throat) chakra: blue

    sixth (brow) chakra: indigo

    seventh (crown) chakra: violet

    Therapeutic colour can

    be administered in a number

of ways, but is often com-

    bined with hydrotherapy and

    aromatherapy to heighten the

    therapeutic effect.

    Pecti: While colour

    therapy may be an effective

    treatment for promoting

    relaxation and overall well-

being, and as an adjunct, or

    complementary therapy in

    treating some disorders and

    illnesses, individuals with

    serious chronic or acute health

problems should not rely solely on the

rst (root; or base of spine)

    third (solar plexus) chakra

Eat &DrinkThanusorn Phucharoen The man behind the successful Baan Kalim Restaurant & Seafood

Would you like to tell us about your background?

I was born here in Phuket but I graduated at Bournemouth

University in England with a masters degree in travel andhospitality. Im very lucky to have grown up in a family thats

been involved with Phukets hotel and restaurant businesses for

several decades, they are the owners of the Safari Beach Hotel,

Savoey Seafood (one of Phukets most popular seafood restau-

rants), and the 5-star La Flora Resort Patong, all of which I have

previously had experience in, in various aspects of the businesses.

More recently my father decided to set up a project to open

a new restaurant located on Kalim Beach, and I was privileged

that he appointed me to manage and oversee every aspect of the

restaurant, from its concept, the building, the interior and exterior

design, through to building the team, planning the marketing and

deciding on and designing the menu. It is my aim with Baan Kalim

to continue the success of Savoey, but in my own individual way.

I hope that our guests see Baan Kalim as a luxury restaurant with

a friendly homelike atmosphere which offers a complete range of

delicious food and beverages at a reasonable price.

Why do you think youre so passionate about food?

My passion for food started when I was very young, and I share

my familys passion for food. Eating is a very important part of my

familys lifestyle and even when I was young and our restaurant

had just opened I would take part in new menu tastings. When

you consider this, how can I not be passionate about food!

When I go on holiday I like to travel to different places around the

world, and for me the most important part of the holiday is to trythe local food and learn the eating habits of the country of which

I visit. As examples, Singapore and Malaysia are countries I

love very much and they, like Phuket, have a very rich Chinese

culture, when I went I witnessed how eating was such an

important part of Chinese peoples culture, they eat a lot of

    dishes because it is their

belief that by doing so it

    will bring them wealth

    and happiness. Another

    example is Japan, it was

    here that I really started

    to appreciate that the

    quality of a restaurants

    service is just as impor-

    tant as the

    standard of

    the food, the

    level of service

    I received in the

    restaurants there was very

    impressive. However, it is not

only Asian countries i have learnt

from, it is from Western countries that I have learnt about the

importance of the menu design, the presentation of a dish and

the quality of the ingredients used. Furthermore, by being able

to visit many different countries and learning about their food it

allows me to mix different food styles and create a menu and

dishes that are unique to our restaurant and can continuously

    be updated.

I want to take my experiences and bring different aspects of

them to Baan Kalim and create diversity. I understand that we

    www.phuketindex.com 3

  • 8/22/2019 Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.21

    32/52

have a diverse customer base and we need to cater for

all of our customers. More importantly, I realise that there

are so many restaurant options in Phuket and we have so

much competition. That will always be the case so we need

to ensure that we can keep up with and be better than our

    competitors.

    What is your management philosophy?

You cannot make a restaurant successful without a strong

team. When the restaurant has a lot of customers and its

busy, staff must work in unity and use their knowledge,

experience and skills to help others to ensure the restaurant

runs smoothly. My role is to communicate with the team,

let them know my expectations of them and assist them in

adjusting their attitudes so that we are all thinking and goingin the same direction. I personally use a combination

    of what I believe are two different management styles;

the first is what I call the Thai style, be generous and

understanding of my team and take their welfare into

consideration. The second is the Western style within

which discipline is a priority, the service must be excellent,

and the staff must look and work professionally at all times

and be accepted by our customers. When I want to change

something I will just not command it be done, I will explain

the reasons why I want it to be done, thus preventing

conicts and also helping to develop the team.

What would you like to say about BaanKalim Restaurant & Seafood?

Baan Kalim Restaurant and Seafood offers a mouth-watering and taste-bud tingling range of dining choices

from Seafood, Chinese dishes, Royal Thai cuisine

to classic Western dishes made to suit all tastes and

prepared under the guidance of highly experience

chef and served by a professional restaurant team.

Great emphasis is placed on Thai hospitality with

lots of interaction between the servers and guests.

The restaurant has an array of fresh seafood ranging

from live lobster, tiger prawns and crab through to

a variety of local sh which can be prepared to suit

individual tastes. In addition, Baan Kalim features an

exhibition kitchen, our main focal point, where guests

can view the food preparation while their senses

are put into overdrive with the enticing aromas and

sizzling sounds of good food being cooked. The

restaurant has stunning views overlooking the beautiful

Andaman Sea and panoramic views of the famous

Patong Bay. The Sunsets from here have to be seen

to be believed - a stunning, breathtaking view.

How about a Baan Kalim RecommendedDish for our readers?

Our restaurant never stops developing new menu

items because we want to create an exotic dining

experience. Every dish that we design and implementto our menu has had its ingredients hand selected

and has been taste tested prior to being added.

Some of the most recent dishes I am proud to

    recommended are:

Salmon served with red bean sauce, ginger and

coconut milk with aromatic rice powder and Thai

    herbs

Crispy Tiger Prawns coated in cereal

Royal Thai style crispy vermicelli noodles with

shrimps served with omelet and condiments

Stewed Pork Belly served with preserved

    vegetables and soya sauce

and onions in a creamy sauce with melted cheeseserved in lobster shell

    PhuketCyclingCampaign

    Phuket Cycling Campaign

    Play & Show

Phuket: Bicycle City, is the slogan of the Phuket

Cycling Club, Phukets best known bicycle club

and the group at the forefront of a campaign to get

more local people using bicycles. In 2012 Phuket

Cycling Club first began to promote cycling in

Phuket via Facebook in an effort to fix some of the

islands traffic and air pollution problems.

It was also around this time in 2012 that

hundreds of the citys cycle enthusiasts

started to meet for weekend cycle rides, and

Phuket Cycling Club looked for alternative

ways to try to encourage greater participation

in their rides. It was noticed that when rides

took place on quieter and safer roads more

cyclists would join, the group therefore started

to campaign for the government to improve

the options for Phukets cyclists and to

    consider installing cycle lanes.

As a result of their efforts,

    Phukets very first dedicated

cycle lane was put in place at

Saphan Hin early in 2013, and it ishoped that cycle lanes will be expanded

to many more areas around town in the

    not too distant future.

    The place for cycling

Why was Saphan Hin the rst place to have a

dedicated cycle lane? Phuket City Municipality

was the organization responsible for this project

and they provided Phuketindex.com with the

    following comment...

Everybody wants to save money; everybody

wants to spend less on fuel, so we had to

think of ways to help people do this. Phuketis a small island, so why shouldnt people be

able to ride bicycles, which provides them

with exercise and are safe. We believed that

Phuket City Municipality should take the

initiative and lead the way by building cycle

lanes and installing bike racks where people

can park their cycles securely. Saphan Hin

is a large public park located in the heart

of Phuket Town and is the perfect place for

Phukets residents and tourists to come to

exercise and relax; there is plenty of shade provided

by the trees, and there are beautiful sea views. In

addition, there is also a very wide road, and not too

much trafc. This is the reason we decided to have

the lanes put in at Saphan Hin rst.

We agree with Phuket Cycling Club, and we want to

assist them in their campaign to encourage more use

of bicycles. Cycling is an activity that is benecial in

the development of the body, and it is important to

provide children and people of all ages with an option

for using their spare time which will be of benet to them.

In addition to being great exercise, cycling is also a sport

which is becoming more and more popular every year,

especially with clubs such as the Phuket Cycling Club who

promote international arrangements which allow athletes to

test their capabilities throughout the year. They believe if they

are able to nd good athletes they will continue to practice and

will bring other people to come and try out the groups rides.

Our View - Phuket Cycling Club Members

10 reasons to start using a bicycle

    1. Its easier to nance a new bicycle than a new car.

    2. A bicycle has a tiny manufacturing footprint when compared to a car.

    3. Bikes save taxpayers money by reducing road wear.

    4. Bicycles are an effective alternative to a second car.

    5. Using a bike for transportation can help you lose weight and improve

    your overall health.

    6. You can store a dozen bicycles in a single automobile-sized parking place.

Khun AeAs I see it now Phuket has a lot more

people interested in riding together, it is

a fun activity, and so many people enjoy

it and like to travel around the island

by bike. It is also a great way to meet

new people and to share experiences.

When we have a large group its good

fun to join us, we do a day long tour

to the main attractions of Phuket such

as Promthep Cape, Nai Harn, Patong,

Sarasin Bridge, Saphan Hin etc. When

you try it you realise that its not just

about recreation, but its also anothermemorable event in your life. Its not

easy to cycle 20 - 30 kilometres per trip,

so you must be patient and really want

to do it, but if you can do it you will be

    extremely proud.

Khun SarayutNow Im an old man, and of course

    I sometimes have health problems;

I sometimes have back pains and

sometimes my movements are notuent. Therefore, doctors recommend

that I exercise, and I choose cycling

because I dont find it boring and

I can do it alone. Since starting

    to exercise regularly many things

have changed, I get back pain less

frequently and when Ive gone for

    health check-ups my heart and

blood pressure are much better than

    before.

    Join the Club

    www.facebook.com/PhuketCycling

Khun SiwaphongIt is important that we to change the way

people think, roads are public, it is not just cars

and motorbikes that have the right to use them.

However, they must be designed so that walkers

and cyclists can use them too. The reason

that people dare not cycle is simply becauseof their safety concerns when using the roads,

but if the government supports cycle lanes and

provides the facilities, I truly believe that people

will choose to cycle more. There are so many

beautiful areas in Phuket where you can cycle

and these areas, along with cycling, can be

used to promote eco-tourism. However, what

is important is that all sectors understand that

the rights on the road for cyclists are equal to

that of other types of vehicles. If this happens,

Phuket really can be a city of bicycles.

    7. Bicycles dont burn gasoline.

    8. Bikes cost much less to maintain and

    operate than automobiles.

    9. Bicycles provide mobility for those

who may not qualify or afford to drive.

    10. Studies show that bicycle commuters are

    healthier, more productive, and require

    less time off at work.
