The Dakota Territory was a fairlyuninhabited place until gold was
discovered in 1874 by Colonel GeorgeArmstrong Custer’s expedition. That discovery set off a rush of
fortune seekers looking to strike itrich. The first gold was found
near the present day city of Custer in the Southern Hills, but the creeks
and mines yielded little treasure. In 1876, miners moved into the
Northern Black Hills. That’s wherethey came across a gulch full of
dead trees and a creek full of gold…and Deadwood was born. Practically overnight, the tiny gold camp boomed into a
town that played by its own rules. It attracted outlaws, gamblers and gunslingers along with the gold prospectors.Wild Bill Hickok was one of those men who came lookingfor fortune. But just a few short weeks after arriving, he wasgunned down holding a poker hand of aces and eights. And so began the legend of the Deadman’s Hand. Only inDeadwood can you relive that infamous moment. Every dayduring the summer, you can see the shooting of Wild Billand the Trial of Jack McCall (the man who shot him) reenacted right where it happened.
