In our life, there are many ceremonies.

Kids are looking forward to their birthday

parties, celebrating for another happy

birthday again. Girls are always dreaming

of their wedding, which is

the big day once in a lifetime.

Unlike the kids and girls, maybe no

one is looking forward to or dreaming

anything about their funeral. However,

planning for death earlier is just like a

little girl thinking of her wedding.

We all like to think about the big things

that will happen in future and

have a little planning on them.

Some may say “My funeral is none of my

business, I leave the world already, it’s

only things that people who are alive will

do for me.” Yes, this is how we usually

do, but how about trying to think funeral

in another way? Funeral can be the last

surprise and party that we

prepare for our family and friends,

people that we loved in lifetime.

Phoenix is a magazine which is aiming

at bringing new ideas about dying.

We hope our readers can see

dying in a more positive way as it is

a part of life. Also, we are offering

you all the information and ideas you may

need in planning a funeral.

Though we try to plan for the last

ceremony, we know that, sometimes,

it comes in a sudden. This may be the

hardest way of dying that people can

accept, we definitely want to stay with

Paper-making Ipad, “Mercedes Benz”,”Rolex” watch and the Louis Vuitton ensemble have been on the best-selling list for this year! You might wonder, why would Chinese spent money to purchase 1.5 billion dollars on hell-money and other offerings for the spiritual world in 2010? Those were just used to burn, of no use in the living world. Why would they splash off a massive amount of money for the purpose of burning them off? Why would this ritual be so pervasive in the Chinese community?

THE EPITOME OF RESPECT & HOMAGE

Ancestor worship is pivotal in the Chinese society due to a bunch of respectful traditional values. This tradition seeks to honor and reminiscence the actions of the deceased, the ultimate homage to the dead. The ritual practice is based on the belief that the ancestral soul would have a

continued existent to watch over the family members and influence the fortune of living of those they’ve left behind. Chinese believes that the ancestral spirit would eat and drink sacrifi-cial offerings and convey spiritual messages. The importance of paying respect to parents (and

elders) lies with the fact that all physical bodily aspects of one's being were created by one's parents, who continued to tend to one's well-being until one is on firm footings. The respect and the homage to parents, is to return this gracious deed to them in life and after, the ultimate homage.

SECRET PLACE AND FOOD FOR COMMUNICATION

Sacrifices are sometimes made to altars as food for the deceased. Necessities and luxuries, like the deceased's favorite foods, wine, and small sums of money, are placed on the altar in bowls or burned in front of the altar in order to provide for their welfare in the life after dead, which is envisioned as being

similar to the earthly life. This falls under the modes of communication with the Chinese spiritual world concepts. Some of the veneration includes visiting the deceased at their graves and making offerings to the deceased on the altars set up at home in the Spring, Autumn, and Ghost Festi-vals. Due to

the hardships of the late 19th- and 20th-century China, when meat and poultry were difficult to come by, sumptuous feasts are still offered in some Asian countries as a prac-tice to the spirits or ances-tors. However, in the ortho-dox Taoist and Buddhist rituals, only vegetarian food would suffice.

THE AWAITING FESTIVAL FOR GATHERING

Tomb-sweeping day, or the Qingming festival, falls every year as it has now for thousands of years, just after the Spring equinox (April 5 this year). It’s a day for the living to reunite with family members, to pay their respects to the dead, and to enjoy the warming spring air. But you too are looking forward to it, because you need stuff, just as generations of ances-tors before you

have. You’re keeping your fingers crossed that your descendants will have given careful thought to what provisions will get you through another year. The money, joss paper as it is called, is burnt at gravesites, its essence then transmitted to ancestors for use in the spirit world. Traditional joss papers are silver and gold paper squares. Others take the form of stacks of faux paper

money (known as “hell notes”). But these days, all manner of objects are appearing in temple stores: paper cell phones, TV sets, laptops, and even small cars, to be burned in large ovens on site. Pictured above is one of our favorites, a dental kit featur-ing a paper toothbrush, toothpaste tube, mouthwash bottle and cup.

Confucian Religion「慎終追遠」 n

Confucianism puts the family and family ties above all else in the Chinese society.In order to ensure the family member gets a good start in the world after death, It’s the obligation of the offsprings to take good care of the funeral, place the corpse in a proper coffin and look for a comfortable cemetery to let the ancestor

to rest in the spiritual world. Tseng Tzu, the advocator of Confucianism, said: "When they are careful (about their parents) to the end and continue in reverence after (their parents) are long gone, the virtue of the people will return to its natural depth." Chinese believe that taking good care of the deceased would escalate one’s virtue.

ON THE MENTAL ESSENCE

The Family Hierarchical Structure「長幼有序」 n

A family operating under a generic hierarchical structure places the parents at the helm, which holds a prominent position in the Chinese Culture and has the direct effect on people’s behaviors and thinking. Is the basic unit that consti-tutes the society. So, it’s believed that the elders of the

family are revered for their wisdom so in both traditional and modern families, elders are respected, taken care of and looked up to by the rest of the family. When elders die, they are honored by ancestor altars in homes, featuring candles, photographs and favorite items of the deceased.

Burning sacrificial offerings is a way to show love, kindness, respect and support ( Affection); display courtesy . The Five Confucian relationships ruled - the Five Bonds arer: Ruler to ruled, father to son, husband to wife, elder brother to younger brother and friend to friend. Specific duties are prescribed to each of the participants in these sets of relationships such as the young generation have to obey to their aged parents in every aspects; Being nice to friends and taking good care of them. The concept is extend-ed to the dead and leads to the veneration of ancestors, burning luxury goods to the ancestors to make sure they live as if they were alive.

THE MINIATURE OF CONTEMPORARY REALITY

The Cult of Filial Piety「 孝 」 n

Filial Piety is the ethical morals that regulate the family parent-child relation-ship. Children are obligated to respect their elders in every means. Since the ancestors are the ones having brought us into the world, nourished us and having prepared the conditions under which we grew up, hence it is a payback of spiritual debts, again mystical and celes-tial. Ancestor worshipping is not asking for favours, but to fulfil one’s filial duties. The act is a way to respect, honour and look

after ancestors in their spiritual world, guaranteeing the ancestors’ well- being and positive disposition towards the living, as well as the living descendants possibly seek the ancestors’ guidance or assistance. Filial Piety cultivates kinship values like family loyalty and the conti-nuity of the family lineage. This value is also extended to the society - how the ruler uses “xiao” ( filial piety) to rule the land to main peace and harmony.

The lust for luxury of modern Chinese could be greatly reflected by the purchasing pattern of creative sacrificial offerings. In the 21st-century, the living standard is esca-lating and people not only are craving for necessities but also luxurious goodies. Newly invented hi-tech products such as Iphone, Apple Macbook; hi-end ensemble such as Louis Vuitton hang bag and Prada shoes; expensive massage chairs or even Chinese street food such as dim sum are in a huge demand for imitation to allow the deceased to experience the same living style as if they were living before death.
