Cassettes and equipment

Standard cassettes These cassettes are available in different sizes, depending on the application, and in two versions: with or without a leaded backside. Lead-backed cassettes have a lead layer mounted behind the imaging plate, inside the back of the cassette. This type of cassette provides a better image quality as it prevents backscatters to the imaging plate. Therefore, lead-backed cassettes are generally recommended, unless for some specifi c applications, like mammography or trauma, where unleaded cassettes are more apt. In those cases, a dose detector (AEC chamber) is placed behind the cassette. Please note, lead-backed cassettes are heavier than unleaded ones. Standard cassettes should only be used with standard imaging plates.

Dental cassette A dental cassette is technically a standard cassette, which is made in specifi c dimensions (15 x 30 cm) to fi t in dental OPG devices. Please see the description of the standard cassette above for details. Dental cassettes can only be used with standard 15 x 30 cm imaging plates and only in the PCR Eleva S or S Plus readers.

Standard cassettes (type CC)

Our computed radiography cassettes are made of resin and metal to protect the sensitive imaging plates inside. A transparent window shows the barcode of the imaging plate in the cassette. The cassettes have standard dimensions and can be used instead of fi lm-screen cassettes in any conventional X-ray system. The cassettes can be bent slightly to image patients in bed. Philips offers different types and sizes of cassettes to fi t different clinical applications. Please refer to the catalog.

Dental cassette (type CC)

Standard cassettes ST-BDThe standard cassette ST-BD is used for applications requiring low X-ray dose, like pediatrics. Due to the dual-side readout, this cassette's DQE is about 40 % higher than with a standard cassette and imaging plate. This means you can obtain the image quality of a standard cassette and imaging plate, but with about 40 % less X-ray dose. Or you can use the same X-ray dose to acquire images with less noise. The cassette always has a leaded back. The barcode is attached to the cassette instead of on the imaging plate. ST-BD cassettes can only be used with ST-BD imaging plates.

High resolution cassettes High resolution cassettes for single-side read out can be used for applications requiring a high resolution, like extremities. The cassette always has an unleaded back, as well as special adaptations. The lower border of the cassette is very narrow to allow the imaging plate inside to be placed much closer to the cassette edge, and the cassette has a special mark on the right border to allow the PCR reader to differentiate it and position it correctly (e.g. rotate to the correct orientation). HR cassettes can only be used with HR imaging plates. Please note: the 24 x 30 cm HR cassette requires an adapter to be used in the S Plus reader.

High resolution cassettes HR-BD High resolution cassettes HR-BD with dual-side readout are used for applications requiring high resolution, like mammography. The cassette always has an unleaded back as well as other special adaptations. The lower border of the cassette is very narrow to allow the imaging plate inside to be placed much closer to the edge of the cassette. This minimizes the distance to the chest wall for mammography images. The cassette also has a special mark on the right border to allow the PCR reader to differentiate it and position it correctly (e.g. rotate it to the correct orientation). Longview orthopedic cassettesThe longview orthopedic cassette is similar to a standard cassette, except that it is much longer. It is used for applications requiring long exposures, such as for full spine or leg imaging in orthopedics. Because of its size, a long-view cassette requires more than one imaging plate inside. It consists of two or three overlapping plates, depending on its size. All long-view cassettes in our catalog are available with a leaded back. Long-view cassettes have to be used with standard imaging plates.

Radiotherapy cassettesThe radiotherapy cassette looks like a standard cassette, but includes a 0.5 mm thick lead layer in front of the imaging plate. This lead content is used to attenuate the high energy rays used in radiotherapy and to avoid over-exposure on the imaging plate. The radiotherapy cassettes have a leaded back. Because of the quantity of lead in radiotherapy cassettes, in front and behind the imaging plate, these cassettes are heavier than standard cassettes. Radiotherapy cassettes can only be used with standard imaging plates.

Imaging platesThe imaging plate is the part of the PCR system which is sensitive to X-ray. The plate has a thin phosphor layer that is applied to a fl exible plastic base. Since it is a fragile component, the imaging plate is placed in a cassette. During the reading process, the readers take the plate out of the cassette and read it using a laser beam. The plate’s content is then erased and the plate inserted back into the cassette. Standard imaging plates have a barcode which is visible through the cassette window. The barcode of the imaging plate connects the clinical image from the plate with the respective patient, examination, and specifi c view on the Eleva workspot. Philips offers different sizes of imaging plates to fi t different clinical applications. Please refer to the catalog.
