    From the Rectors Desk

    Dear Friends,

I think I blinked because July is almost gone and August is fast upon its heels.

Im excited about August because there is so much going on...A new study (see Your Faith, Your Life),preparations for the Bishops visit with us which this year will be at our Annual Picnic! Our Annual All Par-

ish Picnic at a new site...After MANY years of hosting us Norma Torrey has passed the torch to Peggy and

Phil James. There home has large, flat lawns leading down to the Stilliguamish River, room for Volleyball,

Croquet, and a built in Barbecue.

Also this August I will be gone on some personal time to visit my family in the East, including my new twin

great-nephews! I will also be interviewing with a congregation in Delaware. They will be sending a team

here in September. I will miss one Sunday, which Charlie Forbes has agreed to cover. Then the following

week I will be at a Continuing Education Conference called: Models and Processes for Community Trans-

formation which is being held in North Bend.

    Then BOOM,the Bishops Visit!

Although I will be out of the Office for two weeks, I will keep in touch via email and cell phone, especially

    during my Continuing Education week.

On another note, I am STILL SO PROUD of our community for our generosity to one of our own! The

news about our scholarship for Ben Williams made the front page of the new Diocesan Website!!! Here is

    Baptism!Full inclusion and Membership

On July 24th we had the great joy of a Baptism at St.

Philips. Alyssajoe Hope Avey was welcomed into theHousehold of God!

Alyssajoes parents are no longer resident members of St.Philips, but had been in the past. Desiree had been a regularattendee and her marriage to Phil was celebrated at St.

Philips and Rev. Mary was the officiant. When Phil retiredfrom active duty in the Navy, he asked Rev. Mary to serve as

the chaplain at the ceremony. And, their extended family, es-

pecially Alyssajoes Great- Grandmother live here. With allthat history and connection, it seemed fitting that this be the

launching place for Alyssajoes New Life in Christ!Pictures by Sue Riffe

Bishops Visitation - August 28th!Anyone want to be Baptized? Confirmed? Received?

Re-Affirmed?????Every couple of years we have the official visitation from our Bishop. Our turn is August 28th and wevescheduled it to be our Annual Parish Picnic as well!

At the time of the Bishops visit a number of things take place....He inspects the Parish Register of services; hemeets with the Vestry; and, he is available for things only the Bishop can do. These include 1. Confirmation,

where adults (anyone 12 and up) are invited to Confirm their commitment to their Baptismal Covenant. Itinvolves some education/training in advance! 2. Reception, where those who have been confirmed in

another tradition, specifically Roman Catholic or Lutheran are Received as confirmed members of the Epis-copal Church. And 3. Re-Affirmation, where anyone who wishes may ReAffirm in front of the Bishop and

congregation their Baptismal vows and receive a blessing.

One more thing, the Bishop is also happy to Baptize anyone at the time of his visit, especially this visit where

the Baptism would take place in the Stilliguamish River~

If anyone is interested in more information in these Rites, please contact Rev. Mary as soon as possible!

The Bee Hive seems to have been deserted sometime in the early Summer. The bees probably swarmed

somewhere new to look for food. (As I understand it, anyway). In any case, the hive remains and Scout

Bees come and check it out occasionally, but no new colony has yet come to claim residence.

I am looking for a volunteer or two to help us get the hive down sometime in the next month. Our original

bee guy has suffered and injury and is unable to claim the hive. Please contact me if you might be will-

ing to assist with this task.

Archbishop of Canterburycalls for action, advocacyfor Horn of Africa's droughvictimsBy ENS staff, July 29, 2011

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has called for Anglicans to both donate to agencies attempting to help the victims of drought

the Horn of Africa and to "call upon their own governments to respond to the U.N. appeals -- to respond immediately and generously."

The United Nations saysthat an estimated 11.6 million people in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and Somalia are facing severe food shortageswith rates of malnutrition and related deaths having reached alarming levels in many parts of the region. The drought is said to be theworst in 60 years. On July 21 the U.N. declareda state on famine in two areas of southern Somalia, the worst affected country, and aske

    for increased international aid.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that roughly $300 million is needed in the next two months to provide an adequate response to

    famine-affected areas.

Williams' July 28 appeal lists faith-based aid agencies accepting donations, including Episcopal Relief & Development. The organization rcently saidthat it will through its network of Anglican and Episcopal partners to support the work of local organizations such as Ukamba

    Christian Community Services in Kenya.

Food, including maize, beans and cooking oil, will be distributed to as many as 1,320 households in four areas over the next five monthsEpiscopal Relief & Development said. Orphans, widows and the elderly will receive priority during distribution. The program will also support community efforts to prepare the land for the next rainy season, with soil and water preservation measures such as terracing and sa

    dam construction.

    Williams' statement follows.

"It is devastating to see once again the images of famine haunting our world, as parts of Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia face one of the wodroughts for 60 years. Lives are being devastated -- more than 11 million people desperately need emergency relief, as well as long term

solutions to support sustainable farming and prevent this crisis repeating itself.

Children and other vulnerable people are dying -- the urgency is intense to prevent this disaster reaching a point of catastrophe; to ensuthat we do not fail our fellow human beings in the Horn of Africa. In the longer term progress is possible: I saw it myself last month in a

drought-struck part of Kenya, where local communities were being taught how to adapt to climate change through a local church in itiat

n Britain we can be encouraged by the response from the Department for International Development, which is leading the way in the innational community in responding rapidly and effectively. The British public is also giving generously through the DEC appeal. This needscontinue, saving the lives of the young and the weak right now -- and building for their future. At the same time we must hold governments round the world to account in their response to this humanitarian disaster. There is absolut

no time for delay if lives are to be saved.

Crucially, the faith communities of the world, standing in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in the Horn of Africa, can call upon th

own governments to respond to the U.N. appeals -- to respond immediately and generously."

    I Corinthians 9:6-9

"The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each o

you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to pr

vide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work

t is written, 'He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever.'"

    From Its Time.

love them, and we're telling ourselves that it's okay with God.

The time to turn this around is now. With God's help, we can find it within ourselves to do what needs to

be done. It makes me afraid to think that we might not have much time, but we don't. That's a good kind of fear

It's the kind of fear that brings together our survival instincts with the promptings of our spiritual hearts.-- The
