Dear Partners,

Our founder, Margaret Bancroft, believed that every individual thrived when their care was centered on compassion and respect. This belief has flowed into our working philosophy for all children and adults served today. Since opening its doors, Bancroft has grown from a small school to a multi-faceted, person-centered organization working on the cutting edge of practice. Today, Bancroft profoundly impacts children and adults living with disabilities by delivering high-quality services to empower them to realize their best life.

With more than 30 programs and 200 residences and group homes in the tri-state area, we are proud to be a keystone for individuals with autism, developmental and intellectual disabilities, and brain injury as well as a system of support for their families, through all stages of their lives. From individuals to families to staff – we are a family – and our work is made possible by the compassion and care expressed by our philanthropic partners.

Working collaboratively and growing the reputation of Bancroft as a charity of choice in the New Jersey, Philadelphia and Delaware areas are crucial to our success. By expanding our philanthropic reach, we are able to advance our field, all while building in scale and innovation. By growing in these ways, we are afforded the opportunity to serve more individuals and remain at the forefront of our industry.

It’s hard to know Bancroft and not fall in love with the hope and compassion found at every turn. Bancroft is steeped in a rich legacy that we work hard to honor every day. Fostering growth and opportunity allows each individual to feel valued, which is absolutely priceless. I am confident you will find compelling opportunities for you to deepen your personal and professional engagement with our mission. I am grateful for your partnership and look forward to what we can create together.

Welcome to the Bancroft family.

Best regards,

Toni Pergolin President & CEO

Most recently, Bancroft brought a grand vision to life through the opening of its brand new, state-of-the-art campus, moving from its former iconic Haddonfield campus to Mount Laurel, NJ in 2018. Set on 80 acres, the Bancroft Raymond & Joanne Welsh Campus at Mount Laurel is the heart of our Children’s Services and is home to:

• The Bancroft School – The Bancroft School is the leading regional provider of special education programs for children and youth with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, ages 11 to 21. For over 135 years, The Bancroft School has continued to innovate in instruction, therapeutic integration, behavior therapies, individualized programs, life and job skills training and preparation for transition and beyond.

• Lindens Neurobehavioral Program – An intensive stabilization program for children and adolescents facing severe behaviors that have interrupted family life, education, community recreation and socialization, The Lindens program utilizes evidence-based practices to reduce the frequency, duration and intensity of problem behaviors, including self-injurious behavior, aggression, and property destruction.

• Campus Residential Program – Campus Residences provide intensive support and supervision, with the goal of preparing children and adolescents to transition to more independent settings in the community. The program focuses on an individual’s cognitive, physical and psychosocial development, enabling each person to reach his or her highest potential.

6

Children’s Services also includes the Early Education Program and Voorhees Pediatric Facility. The Bancroft Early Education Program is proven to provide children a solid foundation for success by building on mastered skills as they learn a new one. Students gain a love of learning while developing social skills, making friends and having fun.

A unique collaboration between two leading organizations – Bancroft and Voorhees Pediatric Facility – The Bancroft School at Voorhees Pediatric Facility is the first New Jersey Department of Education-approved private school within a pediatric specialized-care facility. Founded in 1995, this pioneering program opens a whole new world to medically fragile children who require continuous, skilled, high-level nursing care.

Working with children from ages 3 through 21, Bancroft partners with school districts and state agencies to address the unique needs and supports required for each student including special education, integrated therapies, communication devices, and residential programs.

Our goal – throughout all of our children’s programs – is to position the child for success in the next phase of their development – academically, socially and emotionally.

Adult Employment Services Every person has a right to employment that is fulfilling and enjoyable. Whether a person with an intellectual or developmental disability works, volunteers or takes part in a structured day program, these opportunities are critical in boosting self-esteem and fostering a sense of accomplishment.

Our model ensures each person is properly trained and supported toward the goal of transitioning into the workforce. With time, attention, development and refinement of skills, individuals progress to competitive employment with minimal to no support.

7

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live a productive, fulfilled and meaningful life. Through residential, day and vocational program options, Bancroft promotes greater levels of independence through daily life and job-skills development, along with supports to parallel each person’s progress and achievements.

Day programs, community living options, job training and social skills development help adults diagnosed with developmental and intellectual disabilities feel fully included in their communities – both at home and at work.

Transitional EmploymentJob opportunities are community-based with ongoing on-site training from a Bancroft Job Coach. As skill level improves and increased independence is achieved, individuals transition to competitive employment in the community.

Supported EmploymentBased in the community and in small and large businesses, these opportunities are customized for both the individual and their community employer.

Bancroft Employment Enterprises Bancroft has created a thriving enterprise of small businesses operated by adults with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities. From lawn care to printing and an online apparel store, we are proud to provide meaningful employment to many of those we serve.

Research FocusFor decades, there has been much-publicized autism research to try to find the root cause of autism. While this type of research is needed, Bancroft’s approach to research is geared to our mission. It is designed to help people who need services now or in the very near future by testing and proving the evidence-based practices that make the quality of life better for those diagnosed with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Bancroft NeuroRehabBancroft is a key partner on a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant awarded to Drexel University to study the most effective way to safely evaluate and make decisions regarding an individual’s ability to return to driving after experiencing a brain injury. Using a virtual reality driving simulator, Bancroft NeuroRehab employs the latest technology for evaluation. The use of virtual reality simulation is a promising and relatively recent approach for evaluating driving capacity among people with neurological compromise.

CHOP PartnershipBancroft is assisting Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with clinical services for their patients diagnosed with autism. This collaboration enables Bancroft to provide expertise in the area of clinical support, allowing CHOP to focus on the medical services for which it is known. This collaboration brings together two highly regarded organizations for the benefit of some of the most vulnerable children in the Greater Philadelphia region and is funded by the Eagles Autism Challenge.

A few of our current research projects include the following:

13

In the same way, we focus on research that improves the quality of life for those with brain injuries. For instance, Bancroft conducted a research project to prove that Canine-Assisted Therapy (CAT) helped patients with brain injury in our Bancroft NeuroRehab program to stay on task longer and develop stamina, strength, and flexibility faster. This research led to a funding initiative that enabled Bancroft to adopt a new highly trained therapy dog and continue to offer Canine Assisted Therapy (CAT) after our CAT dog named Seamus retired.

Page 15: Philanthropic Partnerships · Major Gifts Planned Giving Matching Gifts Volunteer Opportunities ... Bancroft has grown from a small school to a multi-faceted, person-centered organization

Swim ProgramBancroft is conducting a study designed to teach prerequisite swim behaviors, such as kicks and arm strokes, and help the participants to combine these behaviors to ultimately swim. The study uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), including physical prompting to increase independence and build children’s swimming skills.

Bancroft would like to extend the current pilot study procedures and evaluate the teaching procedures across a variety of participants and work to publish the results. By desiging a tiered curriculum, with supporting research, Bancroft could assess swimming skills and needs (e.g., safety skills, fear of water, prerequisite swimming skills) and teach the skills necessary for independent swimming.

Other innovative research studies under consideration include:

• Research to understand how the underlying biology of co-occurring conditions in the autism spectrum disorders (i.e., sleep disorders, obesity, screen use) affects behavior.

• Research to understand nutrition and diet impact on behaviors commonly seen in those diagnosed with autism and other intellectual and developmental disorders.

• Research on stress studies of the variables related to direct support professionals staff burnout.

• Research to understand the key factors related to outcomes in brain injury rehabilitation.

14

Please note that we anticipate that our research initiatives will grow and change over time. In light of this, we would welcome a discussion regarding research projects at Bancroft.

Major Gifts

Philanthropic contributions are critical to promoting Bancroft’s mission of empowering children and adults living with disabilities to realize their best life. Many of the programs and services that have the greatest impact on the individuals served by Bancroft are not reimbursed and are dependent on donor support. These programs and services include enrichment activities and outings, art and music programs, horticultural activities, assistive technology not covered by insurance, and much more.

Bancroft is proud to partner with donors to explore the areas of greatest interest and ensure their philanthropic investment aligns with the programs, services or initiatives they are most passionate about supporting.

Day of CaringAs we work to establish and deepen our relationships with the corporate community, efforts to develop volunteer opportunities are a key focus. We are thrilled to host corporate groups interested in supporting the individuals we serve through Bancroft programs. We would be happy to accommodate your schedule and customize a half-day or full-day experience for groups ranging from five to twenty-five people.

Volunteer OpportunitiesBancroft could not serve so many so well without the assistance of volunteers. Without strong partnerships between the private and nonprofit sectors, and the efforts of both hands-on and skills-based corporate volunteers, Bancroft would not have the resources needed to operate and serve our community. Please read on to discover our key areas for volunteerism and contact us to arrange a volunteer opportunity for you and your colleagues.

17

Among the many programs that Bancroft operates, we have some volunteer “fan favorites.” Programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including The Jacob Schaefer Center and Judith B. Flicker Residences, welcome volunteers. Volunteering at programs may include engaging with those we serve to make arts and crafts, add to the fun at an outdoor carnival, play bingo or board games and prepare and serve a meal at a group home.
