DiscoveriesinDC

Duringthesummerof2015,IworkedatClarkConstructionGroup,LLCinWashingtonD.C.asbothafieldandofficeengineeringintern.Myprimaryjobsite(on6thstreetintheSWquadrant)hadanimpressiveviewofthecity,andwaslocatedbetweentheWashingtonMonumentandtheU.S.Capitol.Thetwelve-storyofficebuildingisapproximately360,000squarefeet,andfeaturesthreelevelsofbelow-gradeparking.

BythetimeIbeganmyinternship,wehadcompletedthebuilding’sstructure,andweremovingtocompletetheskinandpreparethebuildingforthecommissioningprocess.Atthisstage,workonthejobsitewasdominatedbyourMEP,drywall,elevator,andglass/glazingsubcontractors.Myonsiteroleinvolvedplanning,monitoring,controlling,andcommunicatingprogressonthejobsite;inpractice,thisincludedreadingandinterpretingdrawings,writingRFI’s,dealingwithsubmittals,evaluatingrequisitions,schedulingwork,etc.

SomethingIdidn’texpectgoingintomyinternshipwas,despitethestressandcontinuousdemandsoftheenvironment,howmuchfunworkcouldbe.Therewasaspectrumofpersonalitiesacrossallofoursubcontractors,whiletheClarkteamwasespeciallygreattoworkwith.TherewereafewthingshoweverthatIcouldn’thavebeenpreparedfor.Noclassroomforexamplewouldhavetaughtmewhattodowhenamaninstantaneouslybreakshisneckandlieslifelesslyonthegroundinfrontofme.

AcouplememorableClarkmoments(bothonandoffthejobsite)includetherushofclimbingoursite’scranewhichtoweredovertheD.C.skyline,aswellasseeingKevinHartperformashowliveattheVerizonCenter.ItwasalsovaluablehavingBrotherAdamGreyasaresourcethroughoutmysummer;hewasalwaysaquickandcasualphonecallaway,andissimplyachilldude.Finally,Clark’semphasisonphilanthropyandcommunityserviceresonatedwithme.TheteamsIworkedwithhadtheopportunitytoserveahomelessshelterinColumbiaHeightsaswellasDCCentralKitchen,stronglyemulatingsomeofthecoreidealsdefiningamemberofPhiKappaPsi.

Olliehasanumberofwonderfulqualities,butifyouaskedhisfriends,they’dtellyouthatprimarilyheisacaring,hardworking,drivenindividual.DuringhistimeatPennTheta,Olliehasservedasthechapter’schaplainandscholarshipchairman.Underhissupervision,thebrotherhoodearnedthehighestGPAamongLafayettefraternitiestwosemestersinarow,whichhelpedthebrotherhoodeventuallywinChapteroftheYearfortheschoolyearof2014-2015.Olliehasfoundanicheinthefraternityasaleader,andisthefirstdestinationforanybodylookingforadviceorjustsomebodytotalkto.AsajuniorcivilengineeringmajorandinvolvedMarquisScholar,heisconstantlystrivingforperfection.Whenheisnotdedicatinghistimetothebrotherhoodorcommunityserviceefforts,heisbusyapplyinghisworkethictohisschoolwork.Ollieputshispassionforsuccessintoallofhisendeavors,andweareluckytohavehimaroundforonemoreyearbeforehegraduates.Olliecanbereachedat(703)585-0931,[email protected].

MovingOn

Overthesummer,Icontemplatedonwhatcareerpathtotakeasanyseniorincollegewould.EvenafterthreeyearsofcollegeIhadnoideawhatdirectionIwantedtotake.IknewIwantedajobthatwouldallowmetoworkwithateam,problemsolveandmostimportantlytravel.GoingthroughthejobsearchwasnotasstressfulformeasIthoughtitwouldbe.Thehardpartwasbalancingmechanicalengineering,beingasenioradmissionsinterviewer,fraternityeducatorandvicepresidentofengineerswithoutbordersontopofapplyingtocompanies.ItrulybelievethekeytomysuccessthissemesterwasusingGooglecalendars.Iwasabletoeffectivelyplanoutmytimewhileexecutingmydailytasks.AfterhavingthreejoboffersinthreecompletelydifferentindustriesIamhappytoannounceIwillbeworkingatAmazonasaTeamOperationsLeader.Thepositionwillallowmetoleadanddevelopateamof150-200people.Thepositionissimilartobeingafraternityeducatorbutjustalargerscale.AlthoughmyjobatAmazonwillnotallowmetravel,IamhopingthatinthenearfutureIfindapositionthatwill.

AsoneofPennTheta’smostinvolvedbrothersbothinhouseandout,StevenShawhasleftalastinglegacyonthisbrotherhood.Heisarealworkhorse,andwhenheisnotlockedupinAcopianwithengineeringwork,heisdedicatinghistimetohelpingoutthebrotherhoodusinghiswidevarietyoftalents.Theseincludehelpingbrotherswithwork,pitchinginwherehelpisneeded,andsuccessfullychoreographingandleadingthePennThetachaptertotwoconsecutivedancemarathonwins.Hewasthefraternityeducatorforthemostrecentpledgeclassandhewaslastyear’schaplain.OncampusShawremainsactiveandsuccessfulasanorientationleader,seniorinterviewer,andvicepresidentofEngineersWithoutBorders.Asexcited

FromRushtoBrother

BeingaPhiPsiisatitlethatonlyaselectfewareabletoproudlycarry.Itisasymbolofloyaltyandrespecttonotonlyourbrothers,butalsotothecommunityandthosewhoweencounterandinteractwithonadaytodaybasis.Thishousehasreallybeenaveryimpactfulplaceformethesepastcoupleofmonths.ItwentfromthebeautifulhouseonMarchFieldthatIwould'vekilledtojustsitontheporchtoasecondhometomeandsheltertome.EverytimeIwalkintothehouse,Ifeeltheloveandsupportofmy69otherbrothersandamazingalumni.ThishousehashelpedmetofindoutthingsaboutmyselfthatIneverknewbeforeandmostimportantly,ithastaughtmetheskillofpatienceandhowtobehumble.Comingfromnotonlyahugehighschoolof4000students,butalsoatinyfamilyofthree,Ineverhadanythingmorethan1brotherinmylife.ThemembersofPhiKappaPsigivemenotonlytheirlove,butalsotheirunderstandingofnotonlywhoIamasaperson,butalsowhereIcomefromandofmyculture.

Rushwasahugemomentinmylife.IlearnedagreatdealaboutPhiPsiandtheprocessreallygavemeanewoutlookonmyownlife.Rushtaughtmeaboutwhatitreallymeanstotrustthebrotheryouhavenexttoyou.Noteverythinginlifeisachievableifwetrytoconqueritallonourown.Brotherhoodandthecomraderyofthehousejustmademefallinlovewithmyfraternitythatmuchmore.IamsurroundedbyagreatnumberofpeoplethatIcannotonlytrustwithmyentirelife,butalsopeoplewhowanttobesuccessfulinlifeandwillnotstoporsettlewiththestatusquo.ThegreatjoyofservingothersisavaluethatPhiPsistandsbyandfaithfullypracticesveryoften.Whetherwearevolunteeringatabreastcancerawarenessevent,playingbasketballwiththeboysandgirlsclubinEaston,orhelpingstudentswiththeirhomework,PhiKappaPsiisalwayswillingtolendahelpinghandtothosewhomayormaynotneedit.Imagineeverybrotheraskingthemselves“WhatcanIdotoservesomeonewhomaybelessfortunatethanme”andthenputtingthatideaintopractice.PhiPsiallaroundthecountryiswillingtohelpthosewhoarelessfortunate.PhiKappaPsiisafraternitythatdemandsitsmemberstounlockbetterversionsofthemselveseverydaytobringtotheoutsideworldtomakethecommunitybetter.Wearealwaysreachingnewlevelsandaresolelybasedontheintegrityofourbrothers.

Ifyouweretoaskmeinmyfreshmanyearofcollege,“WhyPhiPsi?”,IwouldprobablyrespondwiththefactthatIlovedtheOldGreyBarnthatthebrotherslivedinandtheirleveloffriendshipandbrotherhoodthatyoucanseeoncampuswhenyougotothedininghalls,inthegym,andevenwhenyouwalkintoMarkleHall.AverysuperficialanswerthatneededtobeworkedonifIeverwantedtobeamemberofPhiKappaPsi.Ifyouweretoaskmethatquestionduringtherushprocess,myresponsewouldhavebeenbecauseIfeelathomeandsafearoundmybrothers.ButnowasaanofficialbrotherandSophomorewhoishalfwaydonethisyear,ifsomeonewastoask“WhyPhiPsi?”,Iwouldwholeheartedlyrespondinthefollowingmanner.PhiKappaPsiisnotonlyahometome,butitisalsoasafespaceformetogooncampuswhenIneedtorelyonmybrothers.Wehavefun,argueeveryotherdayaboutacleanup,andwehelpeachotherwhenabrotherisinneed.BeingaPhiPsihasnotonlychangedhowIviewmyself,butalsohowIconductmyselfasahumanbeingwhenIamatschool,athome,orevenoutofthecountry.BeingaPhiPsihastaughtmethatthereismoretolifethanwhatI

wantorwhatIbelieveisright.BeinginthisbrotherhoodhasshownmehowtounlockthatbetterversionofmyselfandcareabouttheneedsofotherswhomaybelessfortunatethanIam.JoiningPhiKappaPsihasbeenthebestdecisionofmylifeandwillalwaysbenearanddeartomyheartuntilthedayIdie.PhiPsihasshownmethatfraternitylifedoesnotendwhenamembergraduatestheirundergraduatestageofcollege.Aswecanseewithouramazingalumnibase,beingaPhiPsimeansreplacingyourselfwhenyourtimehascome,butalsoremaininginvolvedasamentorandmoreimportantlyabrother.Everyday,myloveforeachandeveryoneofmybrothersgrowsexponentiallyandIamcannotwaittoseewhattheSpringsemesterhasinstoreforme.

AlthoughChristopherFelixisoneofthenewboys,itcansometimesbehardtotell,ashehasalreadycontributedsomuchtothehouse.AlreadyChrishastackledbeingthehouseCommissarandhasdoneabrilliantjobwithitthusfar.WhileactingasthecurrentCommissar,ChrisiscurrentlyalsoPennTheta’sCorrespondingSecretary.Thepassionthatheexhibitsforhisin-housedutiesaresecondonlytohisear-to-earsmileandhisboominglaugh,bothofwhichhavebecomeacommonsightaroundtheOldGreyBarn.Hisdevotiontothebrotherhooddoesn’tpreventChrisfromremainingactiveoncampus,asheisaresidentadvisor,researchassistant,rugbyplayer,andbaristaatLafayette’slibrarycoffeeshop.

PegsandJobs

It’sthefallsemesterofsenioryear,andthejobhuntaroundcampusiswholeheartedlyunderway.Myengineeringpeershaveallappliedtoandareacceptingengineeringjobs;asquarepeginasquarehole,aperfectmatch.Myfinanceandeconomicscomradeshaveallappliedtoandareacceptingjobswithbanksandotherfinancialinstitutions;atriangularpeginatriangularhole,anotherperfectmatch.Thelistofperfectmatchesgoesonandon,andasIlookedaround,Icouldn'thelpbutbegintofeelthehotwhipsofpanic.WhattypeofjobswouldI,ajackofalltrades,masterofnonetypestudentbeabletoapplytoandactuallybeoffered?Thereseemedtobenoperfectdisciplinesforamultifaceted,jagged,andcrookedpeglikemyselftofitinto.

Iamnotuniqueinthisfeeling.Acrossthecountry,undergraduateshaveincreasinglybeenunabletoperfectlymatchtheirtechnicalskillstoanever-changingandevolvingjobmarket.So,Iwentbacktothebasics.WhatskillshaveIactuallylearnedwhileatcollege?Ihaven’tlearnedhowtotesttensilestrengthsofdifferentmaterials.ButIhavelearnedhowtoanalyze,synthesizeandusecomplexargumentstomybenefit.Ihaven’tlearnedhowtocountcancercells,butIhavelearnedhowtocollaboratewithateaminsolvingaproblemandtheneffectivelycommunicateourresults.Inotherwords,myfuturewasnotasbleakasImayhavepreviouslythought.

So,witharenewedvigor,Ibeganlookingforjobsthatmaybedidn'tnecessarilymatchthetechnicalskillsIhadorhadnotacquiredovermytenure.Instead,Ibeganlookingforjobsthatemphasizeeffectivecommunication,writing,collaboration,internationalexperience,andsecondlanguageskills.Ihadalwaysknownthatmanyofthoseskillsfallundertheheadingof“lawyer”,andfromthebeginningofmytimeatcollegehadkeptthatoptioninmybackpocket.Ihavealsoalwayswantedtobeabletohelppeoplewiththeirproblemsandmakeadifferenceintheirlives.Becomingalawyerhasoftenfeltlikethebestwaytoachievethat.Therefore,thispastsummerandfall,Ibegantostrengthenthatoption.ItookanLSATPrepclassoverthesummer,andeventuallytooktheLSATinOctober.Stillthough,Iwasnotentirelyconvincedthatlawschoolwastheperfectoptionforme,especiallyrightoutofcollege.So,Ibeganaddingyetmorecomplicationstomyalreadyconvolutedpath.

Ihavealwayswantedtoworkinsomesortofinternationalsphere,soIbeganlookingforshorttermoptions.OneshorttermoptionthatimmediatelycaughtmyinterestwasteachingenglishinSpainforanacademicyear.ThiswouldprovidemewithalivablesalarywhiledoingsomethingIenjoyinacountryIlove.Itdidnottakemuchconvincingformetobesoldontheidea,andIquicklybeganresearchingwaystogoaboutteachingenglishinSpain.

Ialsoknowthatearningmoneyandgainingsomepreliminaryexperienceinthelegalfieldbeforeenteringlawschoolcouldgoalongwayinmyfuturecareer,bothacademicallyandprofessionally.So,IhavealsobeenresearchinglawfirmswithparalegalprogramsthatIcouldpartakein.Aparalegalpositionforafewyearswouldhelpmegetagraspofthelegalworldandearnsomemoneywhiledoingit.

Alloftheseintricaciesarecurrentlyatplayinmyjobhunt.IfIhadtogiveaconcreteanswerastowhatexactlyIwillbedoingoverthenextfiveyears,mybestapproximationwouldbegoingtoSpainforayeartoteachenglish,workingasaparalegalforanotheryearortwobackintheStates,andthen

goingtolawschoolatBostonCollege,BostonUniversity,CornellUniversity,ortheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia.Longstoryshort,I’mnolongeramisshapenpegtryingtofitintoasquarehole.I’maselfmade,adaptablepegreadyforanythingthatcomesmyway.

BrianDierzeisarguablythehappiestpersontoevercomethroughthisbrotherhood,andpossiblyLafayetteCollege.Brian’sconstantpositiveenergyandbeautifulwhistlingskillsplayamuchlovedroleintheatmospherearoundtheOldGreyBarn.DuringhistimewithPhiPsiPennTheta,Brianhaswornmanydifferenthats.Hehasbeengrievancechair,chaplain,andvicepresident,andhastakenoneachoftheserolesinstride,applyinghissignatureDierze“touch”toeachone.Inadditiontohiselectricpersonalityandaccoladeswithinthehouse,BrianisaGovernment/LawandSpanishdoublemajorwithaminorinEconomics,andspendsmuchofhistimeburiedinhisbooks.However,neitherhisdedicationtothehousenorhisworkstopshimfromlendinghistimeelsewhere.Oncampus,BrianisaprogramcoordinatorforLANDIS,LafayetteCollege’soncampuscommunityservicegroup.HeisalsothevicepresidentoftheOrderofOmegaatLafayette.Brianisoneofakindineverysenseofthephrase,andwewishhimluckashepreparestograduatethisspringandstartthenextchapterinwhatissuretobeanexcitingandsuccessfulprofessionalcareer.IfyouwouldliketocontactBrian,youcanreachbyphoneat(978)[email protected].

BeingaPhiPsiintheRealWorld

Uponhisgraduationinthespring,BrotherJesseBaer,thePhilosophyandGovernmentandLawdoublemajorwillbeheadedtotheheartofManhattantoworkininvestmentsalesforthemidtown-basedhedgefund,StabilisCapitalManagement,LP.StabilisCapitalisafundspecializingindistressedcommercialrealestate.Athisjob,BrotherBaerwillbeworkingwiththesalesanddealsourcingteamstonetworkwithmortgagebrokersandotherrelevantindustryprofessionalstoplaceshorttermloansrangingfrom$3to$50millioninsize.Jessemostlooksforwardtoworkingdealsthroughthesystemandtrulylearningtheintricaciesofhowdealsgetdone.

Baerhasalreadyhadsomeexperiencewiththis.Forthepasttwosummers,hehasbeenaninternwithStabilisworkinginthesamedepartment,makingcoldcallstodrumupbusiness.HewassosuccessfulthathewasinvitedtojoinStabilisagainthefollowingsummer.Baerrecountsthatuponstartingthesecondsummer,hisbossestoldhimhewouldhavetoacceptthisinternshipwithoutanyhopethathewouldgetajoboffer,aseveryoneintheofficewasatleastsevenyearshisseniorwithindustryexperience.Yet,asheproudlyrecounted,hehadagroundbreakingsummer,bringinginmillionsindealsanddiscoveringsomegreatnewcontactsforthebusinesstothepointthatbysummer’send,hehadsecuredatentativeoffer,whichwasfinalizedinOctober.

Baermethisfuturebossatafriend’sdinnerpartywheretheyhadawonderfulconversationandwascontactedmonthslatertoaskwhetherhewouldbeinterestedtointerviewforaninternship.BrotherBaerwillbethefirsttotellyouhowmuchPhiPsihelpedhimonhisquestforemployment:“Otherthanunderstandinghowimportantafirstimpressioncanbe,PKPhashelpedmeunderstandtheimportanceofrunningwithanyopportunitythatcomesyourwayandthatthereisalwaysroomtodomore,better,evenwhenyourchancesforsuccessarelow.”

Whenwethinkofcourteousandcultured,wethinkofJesse“BrotherBaer”Baer.Duringhistimeinthehouse,Jessehasbeenrecruitmentchair,commissar,andhasservedtwiceasthecommunityservicechair.Hisdevotiontothehouse,andthevaluesthatwestrivetoembodyasPhiPsi’s,hasservedthehousewell,andcontinuestodosoevenasheentershisfinalsemesterhereatLafayette.OncampusJesseplayedfortheLafayetteCollegeHockeyTeamforthreeyearsandwastheteampresidentforthelastyear.Infact,hisskillswithahockeystickrecentlypaidindividendsforthebrotherhood,ashehelpedleadPennThetatoanintramuralfloorhockeychampionshipthispastfall.Jesse’srelaxeddemeanor,wisdom,andbrightsmilewillbemisseddearlynextsemester.Thatbeingsaid,weareexcitedtoreleasehimandallowhimtoimpactothersinthesamewayhehasimpactedthebrotherhood.OnceJessestartswork,hewillbelivinginBrooklyn,NewYork.Ifyou’dliketoreachouttoJesseforanythingfromnetworkingtopotentialapartmentleads,[email protected],203-241-0193,oraddhimonLinkedIn.

ANewBeginning

The2016SpringSemesterhasbroughtaboutatryingbutdefiningtimeforthePennThetaChapter.InthebeginningofJanuary,asprinklerheadburstonthesecondfloorofthehouse,bringingwaterthroughthehousefromthesecondfloorbathroomside,throughthefirstfloorlivingroom,andintothebasement.Luckily,currentjuniorandhouseresident,IvanRudd,wasatthehouseonthescenetoconductpreliminarydamagecontrol.Hemadethephonecallstothenecessarypartiestobegindamagecontrolandwithinhours,PennThetaAlumni,PlantOperationsofLafayette,andPublicSafetywereatthehouseidentifyingthebestcourseofactiontotakecareofthisunpredictablemess.

Atthebeginningofthesemester,thelivingroomaswellasthefourbedroomsmosteffectedhavebeenclosedoffuntilconstructioncompletion.Theresidentsofthosefourbedrooms:BrianDierze`16,CodyRenfrew`17,BaileyMckenna`18,andAdityaMehtaquicklyfoundtemporaryhousing.Furthermore,dailyoperationsofthehousehavecontinuedasnormalincludingBrothersMeetings,meals,committeemeetings,etcetera.

Allofthesethingssaidandproblemsaddressed,the2016SpringSemesteractivemembershavesteppeduptomakethisexperienceaunifyingone.HouseManagersCoreyMckennaandJamesErario(both`16)havetakenthereinsintheday-to-daymanagementofthehouseviaconsistentbutcalculatedhousecleanups,andoff-campusseniorshavemadetheirpresenceknownatmealsaswellasspendingtimewiththesophomoresandjuniorscurrentlylivinginthehouse.DespitethelargelossofmanyClassof2016memberstovariousstudyabroadprograms,Spring2016hasabrightoutlookforPennThetawiththestrongleadershipdemonstratedbypracticallyallmembersoncampusfromthestart,makingthecaseforGrandChapterthissummerahighlyrealisticgoal.
