Phi Theta Kappa is the only two-year college honor society whose members are automatically nominated for the National Deans List. In addition to the recognition that comes from being included in this publication of two-year college scholars, nominees become eligible for $12,500 in scholarships awarded annually to members.

Members may also request a letter of recommendation sent from Phi Theta Kappas Executive Director. The letter confirms membership and highlights the members role in the Society. This can be an important addition to applications for scholarships, college admission or employment.

Phi Theta Kappa ProgramsEndless Opportunities

15In addition to recognition of academic excellence, Phi Theta Kappa offers members opportunities to become involved in Society programs.

Programs include community service, academic study, leadership development and networking that will strengthen your college experience and prepare you for the future.

Scholarship FirstMembership is Based on Academic Performance.

Participation in Activities is Not Required, but Expands Your Experience.

16Scholarship is first in Phi Theta Kappa. This means that membership eligibility and membership maintenance are based entirely on academic performance.

The Society offers you a vast array of opportunities to get involved in activities; however, participation is not required.

Members often say that they become members for the recognition and scholarships, but after they see the chapter in action, they get hooked on participating in programs, too.

These members quickly learned that the more they become involved in Phi Theta Kappa, the greater their returns will be. Involvement in programs will help you develop skills that employers are looking for, contribute service to the community and broaden your academic horizons. We encourage you to consider taking that first step to get involved.

If your chapter has an Enhanced Membership Program, you may wish to highlight Enhanced Member benefits now.

International Service ProgramA Network of Thousands Making a Difference!

Service partners have included:Keep America BeautifulAmerican Cancer SocietyAmericas PromiseNational Mental Health Association

17Phi Theta Kappa believes that scholars have a responsibility to contribute to their communities. With a network of thousands of active members we can make huge contributions to our communities when we are united in a common effort.

To make the most of this network, Phi Theta Kappa identifies specific service areas and encourages us to unite as an army of volunteers working toward a common purpose to make a difference. Our current International Service Program is a partnership with Keep America Beautiful, and focuses on our environment, specifically in the focus areas of Education and Awareness, Recycling, Beautification and Clean Communities.

Service partners over the years have included organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Americas Promise, the National Mental Health Association and many more.

18Like with service, we unite also in exploring the same theme for interdisciplinary academic study. This year our study theme, known as the Honors Study Topic, is The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences.

Our chapters are focused on facilitating discussions and bringing awareness to these timely topics.

To complement our study, Phi Theta Kappa produces Honors Satellite Seminars, which are broadcast each fall. The seminars feature experts on the Honors Study Topic and provide opportunities for live discussion across the nation and abroad.

Phi Theta Kappa also offers you the opportunity to attend the Societys premier scholarly event the International Honors Institute. As a participant, you will engage in a week of in-depth study and discussion of the Honors Study Topic while networking with members throughout the Society. The 2009 honors institute will be held in Richmond, VA and will cost $875

Building LeadershipIn Your Chapter

On the Regional Level

Internationally

20Leadership opportunities abound in Phi Theta Kappa.

Your leadership opportunities start at the local level. You can chair a committee or run for chapter office.

More leadership opportunities are waiting for you at the regional level. Members elected to regional office serve as motivators and educators to all chapters in the region.

The highest point of student leadership in Phi Theta Kappa is the position of International Officer. Each year at the International Convention, five students are elected to this leadership position. Throughout their year of service, they travel as ambassadors of the Society. Once their term is complete, International Officers receive a $2,000 scholarship for continued education.
