Eligibility: Juniors and seniors in public or private Wake County schools Type of composition: The composition must be a literary analysis that is a close reading and interpretation of a literary text. The use of secondary sources with appropriate citations is encouraged but not required. Form of entry: Number of entries: Only one (1) entry from a student should be submitted. The essay should be part of the regular work of an English class, and no essay should be submitted without the student's permission. Teachers of all eligible classes may select and submit no more than five essays per grade level. The essay should be carefully proofread. Any teacher's marks or comments must be removed. The title of the essay should be at the top of the first page. The student's name must not be on any page of the essay. A cover sheet must be attached to each copy of the essay. Deadline: Entries must be received by March 10 2011.

Awards: Cash prizes, book awards, and certificates of merit will be presented to first and second place winners at each grade level. Honorable mention winners will receive book awards and certificates of merit. In late April (date and time TBA), winners, teachers and parents will be recognized at the spring banquet of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Wake County.
