11:00am Holy Communion & Baptism

¶ We Gather

The Lord be with you

All and also with you

Introduction

Our Lord Jesus Christ has told us

that to enter the kingdom of heaven

we must be born again of water and the Spirit,

and has given us baptism as the sign and seal of this new birth.

Here we are washed by the Holy Spirit and made clean.

Here we are clothed with Christ,

dying to sin that we may live his risen life.

As children of God, we have a new dignity

and God calls us to fullness of life.

Hymn

Sit or kneel

All Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

The Confession is introduced with appropriate words.

All Lord God, we have sinned against you;

we have done evil in your sight.

We are sorry and repent.

Have mercy on us according to your love.

Wash away our wrongdoing

Page 4: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

and cleanse us from our sin.

Renew a right spirit within us

and restore to us the joy of your salvation,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May the Father of all mercies

cleanse you from your sins,

and restore you in his image

to the praise and glory of his name,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Praise or use Woodlands version

All Glory in the highest to the God of heaven;

Peace to all your people through the earth be given.

Mighty God and Father, thanks and praise we bring,

Singing Alleluia to our heavenly king.

Jesus Christ is risen, God the Father’s Son;

With the Holy Spirit, you are Lord alone.

Lamb once killed for sinners, all our guilt to bear,

Show us now your mercy, now receive our prayer.

Christ the world’s true Saviour, high and holy one,

Seated now and reigning from your Father’s throne:

Lord and God, we praise you! Highest heaven adores:

In the Father’s glory, all the praise be yours!

The Collect

Lord of all power and might, - for the day

the author and giver of all good things:

graft in our hearts the love of your name,

increase in us true religion,

nourish us with all goodness,

and of your great mercy keep us in the same;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Page 5: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

Heavenly Father, - or baptism

by the power of your Holy Spirit

you give your faithful people

new life in the water of baptism.

Guide and strengthen us by the same Spirit,

that we who are born again

may serve you in faith and love,

and grow into the full stature of your Son, Jesus Christ,

who is alive and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit

now and for ever. . Amen.

¶ We Listen To God’s Word

First Reading – Deuteronomy 30.9-14 – both readings or one?

Moses spoke to the people, saying, The LORD your God will make you

abundantly prosperous in all your undertakings, in the fruit of your body, in

the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the LORD will

again take delight in prospering you, just as he delighted in prospering your

ancestors, when you obey the LORD your God by observing his

commandments and decrees that are written in this book of the law, because

you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Surely, this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too hard

for you, nor is it too far away. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who

will go up to heaven for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and

observe it?’ Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross

to the other side of the sea for us, and get it for us so that we may hear it and

observe it?’ No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your

heart for you to observe.

At the end the reader may say

This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Second Reading – Colossians 1.1-14*

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to

you and peace from God our Father. In our prayers for you we always thank

God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in

Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the

Page 6: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

6

hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the

word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit

and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves

from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you

learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow-servant. He is a faithful minister of

Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you

and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all

spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the

Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you

grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength

that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure

everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has

enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has

rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom

of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

At the end the reader may say

This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn

Gospel Reading – Luke 10.25-37

Remain standing

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.

All Glory to you, O Lord.

A lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit

eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read

there?’ He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and

your neighbour as yourself.’ And he said to him, ‘You have given the right

answer; do this, and you will live.’ But wanting to justify himself, he asked

Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?' Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from

Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him,

beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was

going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the

other side. But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw

him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds,

Page 7: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

7

having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal,

brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two

denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him; and when I

come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.” Which of these three,

do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the

robbers?’ He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.‘ Jesus said to him, ‘Go

and do likewise.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All Praise to you, O Christ.

Address

¶ The Baptism

Presentation of the Candidates

The president addresses the whole congregation

Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me.Ddo not stop them’.

We thank God for Chloe and Amelia

who have come to be baptized today.

Christ loves them and welcomes them into his Church.

So I ask you all:

Will you help these children as they begin their journey of faith?

All We will.

Will you help them to live and grow within God’s family?

All We will.

The president then addresses the parents and godparents

God knows each of us by name and we are his.

Parents and godparents, you speak for Chloe and Amelia today.

Will you pray for them,

and help them to follow Christ?

We will.

The president addresses the whole congregation

We thank God for Chloe and Amelia

who have come to be baptized today.

Christ loves them and welcomes them into his Church.

Will you support them on their journey of faith?

Page 8: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

8

All We will.

The Decision

The president addresses the candidates through their parents,

godparents and sponsors

We all wander far from God and lose our way:

Christ comes to find us and welcomes us home.

In baptism we respond to his call.

Therefore I ask:

Do you turn away from sin?

I do.

Do you reject evil?

I do.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

I do.

Do you trust in him as Lord?

I do.

Signing with the Cross

The minister makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each candidate, saying

Christ claims you for his own.

Receive the sign of his cross.

When all the candidates have been signed, the president says

Do not be ashamed of Christ.

You are his for ever.

All Stand bravely with him

against all the powers of evil,

and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness,

and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.

All Amen.

Prayer over the Water

The ministers and candidates gather at the baptismal font.

The president stands before the water of baptism and says

Page 9: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

9

Praise God who made heaven and earth,

All who keeps his promise for ever.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

We praise you, loving Father,

for the gift of your Son Jesus.

He was baptized in the River Jordan,

where your Spirit came upon him

and revealed him as the Son you love

He sent his followers

to baptize all who turn to him.

Now, Father, we ask you to bless this water,

that those who are baptized in it

may be cleansed in the water of life,

and, filled with your Spirit

and know that they are loved as your children,

safe in Christ for ever.

All Amen.

Profession of Faith

The president addresses the congregation

Let us affirm,

together with these who are being baptized,

our common faith in Jesus Christ.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father,

source of all being and life,

the one for whom we exist?

All I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,

who took our human nature,

died for us and rose again?

All I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,

who gives life to the people of God

and makes Christ known in the world?

All I believe and trust in him.

This the faith of the Church.

All This is our faith.

Page 10: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

10

We believe and trust in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Baptism

The minister pours water on each candidate, saying

Chloe / Amelia, I baptize you

in the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

The president says

May God, who has received you by baptism

into his Church,

pour upon you the riches of his grace,

that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people

you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit,

and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.

All Amen.

The ministers and candidates return to their places.

¶ We Pray

Prayers of Intercession

These responses may be used

Lord, in your mercy

All hear our prayer

And at the end

Merciful Father,

All accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son,

our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

The Welcome and Peace

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism:

by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.

All We welcome you into the fellowship of faith;

Page 11: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

11

we are children of the same heavenly Father;

we welcome you.

The president introduces the Peace in these or other suitable words.

We are all one in Christ Jesus.

We belong to him through faith,

heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

All and also with you.

A minister may say

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

All may exchange a sign of peace.

Offertory Hymn

The gifts of the people are gathered and presented.

The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it.

¶ We Share in Holy Communion

Remain standing

With this bread that we bring

All We shall remember Jesus.

With this wine that we bring

All We shall remember Jesus.

Bread for his body,

Wine for his blood,

Gifts from God to his table we bring.

All We shall remember Jesus.

The Lord be with you

All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Euch Prayer H

Page 12: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

12

It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation;

in your love you made us for yourself.

When we turned away you did not reject us,

but came to meet us in your Son.

All You embraced us as your children

and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us.

All He opened his arms of love upon the cross

and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends

he took bread, and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to them, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

All Father, we do this in remembrance of him:

his body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,

he gave you thanks, and said:

Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins;

do this in remembrance of me.

All Father, we do this in remembrance of him:

his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,

send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine

may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.

All As we eat and drink these holy gifts

make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.

With your whole Church throughout the world

we offer you this sacrifice of praise

and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

or Additional Euch Prayer 1

Page 13: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

13

It is always right to give you thanks,

God our Creator,

loving and faithful,

holy and strong.

You made us

and the whole universe,

and filled your world with life.

You sent your Son to live among us,

Jesus our Saviour, Mary's child.

He suffered on the cross;

he died to save us from our sins;

he rose in glory from the dead.

You send your Spirit

to bring new life to the world,

and clothe us with power from on high.

And so we join the angels

to celebrate and sing:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God's unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All Jesus Christ has died.

Page 14: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

14

Jesus Christ is risen.

All Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All Jesus Christ will come again.

Or

Great is the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died:

Christ is risen:

Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts

may be fed by Christ's body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Sit or kneel

As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray

All Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

Page 15: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

15

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

The president breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

All Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

grant us peace, grant us peace.

Giving of Communion

The president invites all to share in communion with appropriate words.

If All Christians are warmly invited to receive communion. Those who prefer to

receive a blessing please carry this service book with you when you come to the altar.

Prayer after Communion

Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life,

ever giving himself that the world may live:

may we so receive within ourselves

the power of his death and passion

that, in his saving cup,

we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love;

for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

All God of truth, we have seen with our eyes

and touched with our hands the bread of life.

Strengthen our faith

that we may grow in love for you

and for each other;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Page 16: Pewsheet - 10 July 2016 (Langham)

16

¶ We Go To Serve God

Giving of a Lighted Candle

The minister gives each of the newly baptized a lighted candle.

When all the newly baptized have received a candle, the minister says

God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness

and has given us a place with the saints in light.

You have received the light of Christ;

walk in this light all the days of your life.

All Shine as a light in the world

to the glory of God the Father.

Final Hymn

Blessing

The Blessing is introduced with appropriate words.

And the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

The Dismissal

Go in the light and peace of Christ.

All Thanks be to God.

The ministers and people depart.

Christian Aid Week

Churches Together raised £2,800 this

year – a lower amount than last year,

but using fewer collectors. Brooke

and Langham both collected more

than last year. Christian Aid likes

different ways to raise money, and

were glad that we made almost

£1,000 with our Lent Lunches. The

Methodist Church are holding ‘Open

Gardens’ for a charge. Details for the

week are still to be published. Peter

Townsend.

Greenbelt 2016

Families and individuals will be attending

the Sunday morning service at the

Greenbelt Festival on Sunday 28

August, where Archbishop Justin Welby

will be answering questions put to him

by young people. For more information

and to book tickets visit the Greenbelt

website: www.greenbelt.org.uk/local-

church-offers/. Tickets for the service

are free for us who live in

Peterborough diocese and you can ‘top

up’ your ticket to include the afternoon

for £25 whilst under 25s go free for the

whole day. If you intend to come, please

be in touch with Dominic and we will

arrange to meet up on site and provide

lifts for any who need it.

Traidcraft

The Traidcraft stall will be present in

Church after the 10:30 service on 3rd,

17th and 31st July. Please do have a

look at what Traidcraft has to offer and

even if you don't need to buy anything

consider making a donation to the very

worthwhile work of Traidcraft

Exchange. If you would like any more

information about the work of

Traidcraft in the field of Fairtrade don't

hesitate to get in touch. Denise 722729.

Intercessions Books

The books of intercessions resources

in the office have disappeared – if you

have borrowed them, please return

them as soon as possible.

Faculty Applications

Oakham PCC have applied for

permissions for two projects to be

undertaken in the autumn.

A. A development of the memorial

garden on the south side of the

church: Following a generous offer

from Oakham in Bloom, it is proposed

to replant the south side garden as a

memorial space. We are grateful for all

who, up to now, have kept this area

looking so beautiful, particularly,

particularly Graham Scothern for his

recent work, and we are sure that this

new scheme will only enhance this area

of the churchyard.

B. Proposal for the replacement of the

boiler: A new boiler is proposed to be

installed in the upstairs parish office.

Public notification was displayed on

Wednesday. Parishioners have 28

days from then to lodge any

objections. More detailed plans are

available for inspection in the parish

office or on the website.

Foodbank Update

Current shortages at the Foodbank

are sugar (500g), jam, custard, rice

pudding, coffee. Thank you for your

continuing support. At the recent

AGM, reports were presented

outlining the work of the Foodbank

over the last year, and you can

download a copy of the report from

the website. The Foodbank have just

launched a new website, so do have a

look at www.rutland.foodbank.org.uk.

Come and Chat

Bereavement Support

Group

For the last 3 years we have been

running a Bereavement Support group

in the Parish Hall. It has been for

people of all faiths or none, for those

recently bereaved or those who are

still aching after many years.

However, particularly since Hildred

left, it has become clear that we are

not meeting people’s needs, so the

meetings on the first Thursday of the

month in the Parish Hall will now

stop. We are planning to re-launch

the service in the autumn, in a

different format. To help provide

something useful, we have drawn up a

short questionnaire to ask those who

are bereaved what would help.

If you have lost a loved one – recently

or further back, please fill in one of

the Questionnaires which will be at

the back of Oakham Church, or from

the website. Sian Cheverton.
