11:00am Family Service

Mothering Sunday derived its name from the verse in Paul’s letter to the Galatians,

‘Jerusalem, the heavenly city which is mother of us all’ (Galatians 4.26) but nowadays is

more associated with mothers in general. In the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, when

young girls were in service, they were always allowed to go home on this day to see their

mothers.

Mothering Sunday comes halfway through the season of Lent and its alternative title is

‘Refreshment Sunday’, when the rules about Lenten fasting are supposed to be relaxed. It’s

been the custom to bake and eat a Simnel Cake.

There is no reason why the Christian church should not combine the ideas referred to above,

together with an acknowledgment of God as mother as well as father, an idea that has

increasingly gained acceptance, and appears in the Bible, as well as in the writings of the

saints, such as St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th Century and Mother Julian

of Norwich.

The old custom of ‘clypping’ or ‘hugging’ the church is now being used again in many places.

The idea is that those attending go outside and, holding hands, embrace the building in the

same way as children embrace their mother.

We say together the words printed in bold

Opening Verses of Scripture

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. Psalm 107

As a mother comforts a child so will I comfort you, says the Lord. Isaiah 66.13

Greeting

In a mother’s embrace we see the hospitality of God

Praise God who loves us.

Praise God who cares.

A large candle is lit.

We light this candle to remind us

that the love of God is like a light in our darkness.

Blessed be God for ever.

Page 4: Pewsheet - 6 March 2016 (Langham)

4

We praise you, our God,

for all mothers who have loved and laughed and laboured

as they cared for their children.

Blessed be God for ever.

We praise you, our God,

for all mothers who have wept in sorrow and joy for their children.

Blessed be God for ever.

We praise you, our God,

for Jesus, born of a woman and nurtured in her love,

and for Mary, a reminder of your patient, waiting love.

Blessed be God for ever.

Hymn

1. Fathers and mothers,

sisters and brothers,

all those who love us,

for whom we care:

help and befriend them,

keep and defend them,

Jesus our Saviour,

this is our prayer.

2. And for those others,

fathers and mothers,

children who hunger,

they must be fed:

we would be caring,

readily sharing,

one with another

our daily bread.

3. Sisters and brothers,

fathers and mothers,

we who together

offer our praise:

hear our thanksgiving,

God ever living,

may we walk with you

all of our days.

Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926)

Music: Bunessan, Gaelic folk melody, arr John Barnard (b 1948) (Ancient & Modern – 136))

Confession

In a mother’s forgiveness we experience the mercy and grace of God.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious*;

he bends over his people

as a mother bends over her child.

He abounds in love and faithfulness,

forgiving wickedness, sin and rebellion. (Based on Exodus 34.6 ff. *the word ‘Gracious’ in Hebrew - only used of a mother)

Let us call to mind our sin,

our failure to value the love of others,

and our failure to love as Christ has loved us.

Page 5: Pewsheet - 6 March 2016 (Langham)

5

Silence for reflection

Your love gives us life from the moment of conception.

We fail to live as your children.

Lord have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

You call us to do good.

We seek our own good.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

You hear us when we cry for help.

We ignore the cries of others.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord have mercy.

Absolution

May God the Father

who cares for us as a mother,

forgive us all our sins;

May God the Son,

our Lord and Brother Jesus,

guide us in our daily life;

May God the Holy Spirit,

our enabler and comforter

lead us to walk in the way of the way of Christ,

now and always.

Amen.

The Collect

Praise God who loves us.

Praise God who cares.

The president says the Collect, the prayer of the day.

God of love,

passionate and strong,

tender and careful;

watch over us and hold us all the days of our life;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Reading – Exodus 2.1-10

In a mother’s caring and supporting voice we hear the word of God.

This might be the way Moses' mother told the story

It was such a scary time. Pharaoh had given the order that all Hebrew baby boys were to

be killed and many babies were dying. When my baby was born, and he was a strong

healthy boy, I didn't really know what to do. We believed that God had promised to take

care of us but it was hard to live without fear. I hid my new baby boy away as long as I

could and I kept praying. Then I had an idea: it was dangerous but it was all I could think

of to do. I wove a basket from papyrus reeds and made it watertight. I wrapped my baby

very carefully, and with much fear and many tears of my own, laid the baby in the basket

and hid the basket in the reeds by the river. My daughter stayed to keep watch and to

see what happened. The next bit I only heard from her! Pharaoh's daughter came down

to the river to bathe. When she heard the baby crying she took him up. My clever

daughter did just the right thing. “Would you like me to go and find a Hebrew woman to

nurse the baby?” It all worked out better than I could have dreamed. Pharaoh's daughter

even paid me to take care of my own son! When he was old enough, I took the boy back

to Pharaoh's daughter. She took him as her own son. She named him ‘Moses’ because

she said, “I drew him out of the river”. Well, Moses, you had three good women to care

for you – and that was just the beginning of the story. Ideas first published by www.rootsontheweb.com.

Hymn

1. He's got the whole world in his hand.

He's got the whole world in his hand.

He's got the whole wide world in his hand.

He's got the whole world in his hand.

2. He's got you and me, brother, in his hand.

He's got you and me, brother, in his hand.

He's got you and me, brother, in his hand.

He's got the whole world in his hand.

3. He's got you and me, sister, in his hand.

He's got you and me, sister, in his hand.

He's got you and me, sister, in his hand.

He's got the whole world in his hand.

4.He's got the little tiny baby in his hand.

He's got the little tiny baby in his hand.

He's got the little tiny baby in his hand.

5.He's got everybody here in his hand.

He's got everybody here in his hand.

Reading – Luke 2:33-35

Jesus’ father and mother were speechless with surprise at these words. Simeon went

on to bless them, and said to Mary his mother, “This child marks both the failure and

the recovery of many in Israel, a figure misunderstood and contradicted – the pain of

a sword thrust through you – but the rejection will force honesty, as God reveals

who they really are. The Message

Address

Hymn

1. Brother, sister, let me serve you,

let me be as Christ to you;

pray that I may have the grace

to let you be my servant too.

2. We are pilgrims on a journey,

and companions on the road;

we are here to help each other

walk the mile and bear the load.

3. I will hold the Christ-light for you

in the night-time of your fear;

I will hold my hand out to you,

speak the peace you long to hear.

4. I will weep when you are weeping;

when you laugh, I'll laugh with you;

I will share your joy and sorrow

till we've seen this journey through.

5. When we sing to God in heaven,

we shall find such harmony,

born of all we've known together

of Christ's love and agony.

6. Brother, sister, let me serve you,

let me be as Christ to you;

pray that I may have the grace

to let you be my servant too.

Response

Praise God who loves us.

Praise God who cares.

Page 8: Pewsheet - 6 March 2016 (Langham)

Affirmation of Faith

Let us declare our faith in God.

We believe in God the Father,

from whom every family

in heaven and on earth is named.

We believe in God the Son,

who lives in our hearts through faith,

and fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,

who strengthens us

with power from on high.

We believe in one God;

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Prayers

As children of a loving God

who always listens to our cries,

let us pray to our Father in heaven.

After each section this response may be used

God of love,

hear our prayer.

Loving God,

you have given us the right to be called children of God.

Help us to show your love in our homes

that they may be places of love, security and truth.

Loving God,

Jesus, your Son, was born into the family of Mary and Joseph;

bless all parents and all who care for children;

strengthen those families living under stress

and may your love be known where no human love is found.

Loving God,

we thank you for the family of the Church.

We pray that all may find in her their true home;

that the lonely, the marginalised,

the rejected may be welcomed and loved in the name of Jesus.

Page 9: Pewsheet - 6 March 2016 (Langham)

9

Loving God,

as we see the brokenness of our world

we pray for healing among the nations;

for food where there is hunger;

for freedom where there is oppression;

for joy where there is pain;

that your love may bring peace to all your children.

The Lord's Prayer

As God's children, and heirs with Christ,

we cry in the Spirit, ‘Abba’, Father.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Loving God,

accept the cries of our heart as we offer you prayers;

through them transform us and all creation

until you are in all and through all.

We ask these and all our prayers in the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Peace

In a mother's calming hands and touch we share in the peace of God.

Through the prophet Isaiah, God says,

‘As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you.’

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

Praise God who loves us.

Praise God who cares.

Hymn

1. Now thank we all our God

with hearts and hands and voices,

who wondrous things hath done,

in whom his world rejoices;

who from our mother's arms

hath blessed us on our way

with countless gifts of love,

and still is ours today.

2. O may this bounteous God

through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts

and blessed peace to cheer us;

and keep us in his grace,

and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all ills

in this world and the next.

3. All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given,

the Son, and him who reigns

with them in highest heaven,

the one eternal God,

whom earth and heaven adore;

for thus it was, is now,

and shall be evermore.

As we approach the annual church

required to update the inventory – if

there is any item of church

but is not in the church, please let

Alison Long know so that the record

is complete.

one of these please speak to Denise

Thank you.

Treasurers Needed

All Saints Oakham PCC is urgently

seeking two members for the

Treasury Team, to cover both day-to-

day tasks and monthly collection of

figures for PCC meetings. No

experience is needed as training will

be given. We hope to hold a meeting

at the end of February to discuss what

is involved. Please speak to Peter Hill,

Lee, Alison Long or Ann Blackett for

more information or to sign up.

Help Needed

As you know, we take part in Christian

Aid Week each year. This year, our

Page 18: Pewsheet - 6 March 2016 (Langham)

18

treasurer has had to withdraw after some

years’ service, so we need a treasurer for

the period 15 to 24 May. This doesn’t

involve complicated accounts, but the

ability to count the coins donated, and pay

them into the bank. If you can help with

this importannt task, please ring Peter

Townsend on 759286, or leave a

message.

Traidcraft Stall

As well as the normal Sunday pattern

there will also be a stall at each of the

Friday Lent Lunches, I look forward to

seeing you there! Denise.

Friends of All Saints

Oakham

As from the AGM on 13th March,

The Friends will be without a

Treasurer and a Secretary. Is there

anyone who could fill either of these

positions? We have a good and varied

programme enjoyed by many but

Beryl does need a full Committee to

make this possible. Please contact

Beryl Kirtland on 01572 724103 or by

email

[email protected].

We are a friendly group!

Rutland Foodbank

The Foodbank is currently short of

the following items – your help in

providing some of them would be

very much appreciated: Sugar (small

bags preferred); Long life fruit juice;

Coffee; Smash; Custard; Long life

milk; Toiletries, e.g. soap, shower gel,

deodorant, shampoo shaving gel etc.

Thank you.
