Featured primary classroom The Possums The Possums are one of the six primary classes at Peterborough School. They are a great bunch of

kids and have accomplished so much already. They have been working extremely hard both inside and

outside the classroom. They have developed amazing friendships, communication skills and have been

working hard each and every day to meet their individual goals. Some of the highlights this year have

been: bus trips to the park and shops, ice cream at McDonalds, bringing Possum Magic the class

possum home, traveling to the movies, book week, swimming sessions, rhythm village, sports ready,

teeth brushing, science experiments, enjoying different books and songs, building and playing with our

friends and exploring many sensory activities throughout our days. Well done Possums on an amazing

year so far!

Book Week

"A great school library has kids clamouring to get in, fabulous books on display, cosy nooks to read

in, and something going on all the time. The mind-blowing Book Week displays and special projects

are an added bonus." Alison Lester, Australia's Inaugural Children's Laureate, 2011-2013.

T I’m proud to say this just about sums up our Peterborough School Library.

Our Book Week assembly and parade was a wonderful success. We were able to raise over $250

through our second hand book sale. This money goes towards buying new books and resources.

Thank you to everyone who donated or bought a book as our students will definitely benefit from

your generosity. – Sharon Murphy

Meeting our staff

Featured teacher Our featured teacher this month is Sharon Murphy.

My name is Sharon Murphy and I am Assistant

Principal, R.F.F. teacher and School Librarian.

Many years ago, before I became a teacher, I

worked in the Shellharbour Council Library system

and in Primary school I was a library monitor so I

have always been a keen reader and lover of

books. I now enjoy taking my grandchildren to

local libraries and reading lots of books about cars,

trucks and other vehicles!!! At Peterborough School I assist teachers by providing appropriate resources for programming and I am

especially lucky because I am able to visit all our classes and see the wonderful work students and

staff are doing in our school. I have been working at Peterborough School since 1994 so I have seen

our library grow and change over the years. Previous library teachers – Jennie Warren, Barbara

Costello, Wendy Stankovic, Jude Hutchison and support staff – Rose Ezold have developed a

library that continues to provide a safe and comfortable haven and a motivating and enjoyable learning

classroom for our students. With the support of our Principal Sue Corkery we are continuing to develop

new curriculum based projects within the library.”

Featured learning support officer (SLSO) Our featured SLSO for this month is Lee.

”I’ve been at Peterborough for fifteen years and over that

time have worked across the whole school.

I strive to help the children achieve their full potential.

I love my job and I love a chat. I’m mother to two grown up

children and grand-glamour to three dogs.”

Swimming sensation Congratulations and well done to HS6 student Chelsea

who competed in the National Down Syndrome swimming

championships in Brisbane last week. Chelsea competed

so well she is now the national champion and will be

representing Australia at the Down Syndrome World Games

in Turkey in 2020.

Super effort Chels!

Southern Stars

Southern Stars was a huge success. Students’ performances were outstanding during all four

concerts. The primary dance group and high school signing choir represented our school with

distinction. Congratulations to all the students and staff for your hard work and dedication.

Featured high school class

High School 2

HS2 have been working hard and learning lots!

We have welcomed some new students this year and are so happy to have new friends. We really

enjoy exercising and getting fit doing bike riding, swimming, boot camp and High School dance.

Our favourite session of the week is Community Access. Each week we go shopping at Woolworths

and then go to a local park and have lunch. HS2 have also enjoyed learning all about Indonesia and

have been cooking delicious Nasi Goreng, which is delicious! - Tara Mowbray

Acknowledgement of Country In August some students travelled to Five Islands College, Port Kembla to complete the

‘Acknowledgement of Country’ at a meeting for Principal Education Officers from across the region.

Well done Madison, Charlie and Leteisha

Centrelink information When your child turns 16 they qualify for the DSP (Disability Support Payment). When it’s time to

apply please contact Jude Downie, the School Counsellor for assistance. Jude is able to send the

required support letter directly to Centrelink.

Parents should start the application process when their child is 15 ½ years old – don’t wait until your

child’s 16th birthday to start as it can be time consuming.
