Struktur Atom
Yuni Kusumastuti
-
Which of these is true?
1. Atom and molecule mean the same thing.
2. Atoms are made of molecules.
3. Molecules are made of atoms.
-
Mengapa perlu dipelajari?

elektron terluar suatu atom. Energi ionisasi ini dinyatakan dalam
satuan kJ mol1.
elektron terluar makin mudah dilepaskan.
besar.
Perkecualian Gol IIA > IIIA, VA > VIA, dan VIIIA ternyata
mempunyai energi ionisasi yang sangat besar konfigurasi elektron stabil

(This is because the electrons are further away from the nucleus and so any extra electrons arent attracted as much).
2) They exist as diatomic molecules (so that they both have a full outer shell):

Orbitals and quantum numbers
The Schrdinger model uses three quantum numbers: n, l and ml to describe an orbital:
The principle quantum number 'n' Has values of 1, 2, 3, etc. As n increases the electron density is further away from
the nucleus
The azimuthal (second) quantum number 'l' Has values from 0 to (n-1) 'l' is referred to by a letter ('s'=0, 'p'=1, 'd'=2, 'f'=3) Defines the shape of the orbital
The magnetic (third) quantum number 'ml'
Has values between 'l' and -'l', including 0 Describes the orientation of the orbital in space

-
Orbitals in many-electron atoms
In a many-electron atom, each electron is simultaneously:
attracted to the protons in the nucleus
repelled by other electrons (like-charge repulsion)
-
Electron spin and the Pauli exclusion principle
Electrons have another quantum property called electron spin (Uhlenbeck and Goudsmit, 1925) : A new quantum number for the electron called the
electron spin quantum number, or ms ms has a value of +1/2 or -1/2
Electron spin is crucial for understanding the electron structures
of atoms: The Pauli exclusion principle (Wolfgang Pauli, 1925) states
that no two electrons in an atom can have the same set of four quantum numbers (n, l, ml and ms)
Only two electrons at most can occupy the same orbital, and they have opposite values for magnetic spin (ms = +1/2, and -1/2)
-
Electron Configurations
Orbitals are filled in order of increasing energy, with no more than two electrons per orbital

MOLEKUL
-
-
Contoh unsur diatomik dan poliatomik
Unsur diatomik, Unsur Nitrogen, N2
Unsur poliatomik, Unsur Posporus, P4
-
Contoh molekul senyawa
-
-
RUMUS EMPIRIS DAN RUMUS MOLEKUL
-
RUMUS EMPIRIS
Rumus empiris atau rumus perbandingan sebuah senyawa menunjukkan nilai perbandingan paling sederhana unsur-unsur penyusun senyawa tersebut - Sebagai contohnya, air (H2O) selalu memiliki nilai
perbandingan atom hidrogen berbanding oksigen 2:1 - Etanol (C2H5OH) pun selalu memiliki nilai
-
BENTUK/STRUKTUR RUANG MOLEKUL
-
Bentuk Geometri Molekul

Setiap PEB berarti 1 domain.
-
Setiap PEI ( baik itu ikatan tunggal, rangkap 2 maupun rangkap 3 ) berarti 1 domain
-
Prinsip dasar TDE
Antar domain elektron pada kulit luar atom pusat, saling tolak-menolak sehingga domain elektron akan mengatur diri sedemikian rupa sehingga gaya tolaknya menjadi minimum.
Urutan kekuatan gaya tolaknya : PEB PEB > PEB PEI > PEI PEI
-
Senyawa biner berikatan tunggal
Dirumuskan :
EV = jumlah elektron valensi atom pusat
B = jumlah PEB
I = jumlah PEI ( jumlah atom yang terikat pada atom pusat )
2] IEV[
B
-
-Tentukan jumlah EV atom pusat.
- Tentukan jumlah domain elektron ikatan atau PEI ( I ).
- Tentukan jumlah domain elektron bebas atau PEB ( B ).
-
Senyawa Biner Berikatan Rangkap
Dirumuskan :
EV = jumlah elektron valensi atom pusat
B = jumlah PEB
I = jumlah elektron yang digunakan atom pusat
2] 'IEV[
B
-
POCl3 Jumlah EV atom pusat (P ) = 5
Jumlah PEI ( I ) = 4; tetapi jumlah elektron yang digunakan atom pusat = 3 x 1 ( untuk Cl ) + 1 x 2 ( untuk O ) = 5
Jumlah PEB ( B ) = 0
Tipe molekulnya = A I4 ( Tetrahedral ).
-
MENGAPA???
-
Dengan konfigurasi
elektron seperti itu, atom C
hanya dapat membentuk 2
ikatan kovalen (ingat,
hanya elektron tunggal
yang dapat dipasangkan
untuk membentuk ikatan
kovalen). Oleh karena
ternyata C membentuk 4
ikatan kovalen, dapat
dianggap bahwa 1 elektron
dari orbital 2s dipromosikan
ke orbital 2p, sehingga C
mempunyai 4 elektron
tunggal sebagai berikut.
-
Saat atom karbon membentuk ikatan
kovalen dengan H membentuk CH4, orbital
2s dan ketiga orbital 2p mengalami
hibridisasi membentuk 4 orbital yang
setingkat.
Orbital hibridanya ditandai dengan sp3
untuk menyatakan asalnya, yaitu satu
orbital s dan 3 orbital p. 6C: 1s2 2s1 2p3
mengalami hibridisasi menjadi 6C : 1s2
(2sp3)4
-
Teori Hibridisasi (Teori Ikatan Valensi)

ISSUES TO ADDRESS...
How do atoms assemble into solid structures?
How does the density of a material depend on its structure?
When do material properties vary with the sample (i.e., part) orientation?
1
How do the structures of ceramic materials differ from those of metals?
-
2
Non dense, random packing
Dense, regular packing
Dense, regular-packed structures tend to have
lower energy.
ENERGY AND PACKING
-
3
tend to be densely packed.
have several reasons for dense packing:
-Typically, only one element is present, so all atomic
radii are the same.
-Metallic bonding is not directional.
-Nearest neighbor distances tend to be small in
order to lower bond energy.
have the simplest crystal structures.
We will look at three such structures...

GLASS STRUCTURE
-
Atoms may assemble into crystalline or amorphous structures.
We can predict the density of a material, provided we know the atomic weight, atomic
radius, and crystal geometry (e.g., FCC,
BCC, HCP).
Material properties generally vary with single crystal orientation (i.e., they are anisotropic),
but properties are generally non-directional
(i.e., they are isotropic) in polycrystals with
randomly oriented grains.
