WHAT DO WE MEAN BY PERSONAL BRANDING
Marketers McNally and Speak define the personal brand in this
way:
‘Your brand is a perception or emotion, maintained by somebody other than you, that describes the
total experience of having a relationship with you.’

Warren Buffet
once said "It takes
20 years to build a
reputation and five
minutes to ruin it.
If you think about
that, you'll do
things differently".
IN 2017 …
‘The question is no longer IF you have a personal brand, but if you choose to guide and cultivate the brand or to let it be defined on your behalf,” Shama Hyder wrote. Your online
personas can be curated — and they should be — because if left unattended, you risk letting others define your personal brand rather than defining it yourself.’

‘Your personal brand is not a costume, it’s not a disguise and it’s not who you hope to be one day in the not-so-distant future. Your brand is you, the authentic you that you are today and the unique talents you
possess. Whatever platforms you’re utilizing, make sure you stay true to the real you and that you maintain consistency.’

SOME EXAMPLES FROM THE WORKPLACEThe first year graduate who said – my brand is ‘brand grad’ – I want people to know my name, role, qualifications and what I can bring to the team.
The second year graduate who said – my brand is ‘just one of the team now’- I want to keep going in thementoring program to ensure I actively position myself to further my development.
The new front line supervisor who said – my brand is ‘one of the boys’- I need to start to shift my brand toreflect my new supervisory role now that I’m no longer at the same level.
The experienced manager who said – ‘my brand is my emotions’- people have a hard time seeing past my‘stress’ nature – they avoid bringing things to me for fear of stressing me out.
The executive who said – ‘my brand is very narrow’ – because I have a long career in the one industry, colleagues don’t recognise the other skills and experiences I can bring to the boardroom.
The self-employer business owner who said – ‘my brand is too broad’- because I’ve been involved in manythings – people are not sure what my areas of expertise are – what I do.

DON’T SELL BEER, SELL WARMTH
Alfred Heineken often said, “I don’t sell beer, I sell warmth.”
You must do the same.
Don’t tell people what you do, tell them what you accomplish.
Share the results of what you do.
They’re so much more tangible and relatable. Everyone loves results.

PERSONAL BRANDING – THE HUMAN WAY
The Personal Brand Myth by Jeremiah Gardner: Be More Human
The point in thinking about yourself as a “brand” isn’t to create an alter-ego called our“personal brand” that presents a super-human, polished, and robotic persona of the real you.The point is to become authentic in who you are and intentional about how you tell your story.
Here’s how:
1. Know who you are. What do you value? What do you believe? What are you impassionedabout? Why? What are you really good at? What are you really bad at? Be intimatelyacquainted with your unique story… your why.
2. Tell your story. Find ways to tell your story in meaningful, raw, and human ways. And tell itas best you can right now.

2017 – THE YEAR OF THE SOCIAL EMPLOYEE … An employee advocate is two times more trusted than a CEO.
Employees have on average 10 times more social connections than a brand does.
Only 33% of buyers trust the brand while 90% of customers trust product or service recommendations from people they know.
Brand messages reached 561% further when shared by employees vs. the same messages shared via official brand social channels.
Brand messages are re-shared 24 times more frequently when distributed by employees vs. the brand.
98% of employees use at least one social media site for personal use, of which 50% are already posting about their company.

WHAT’S YOUR NEXT STEP?
In the coming months of your mentoring conversation:
Think, ponder and reflect on your personal brand - where is this at? Defined by whom?
Use the 360 degree activity to really get to know yourself
Identify elements out of this that relate to your personal brand
Self
Peers
Supervisor/Manager
Clients
Identify activities, conversations and opportunities that you might take action on as part of your mentoring conversation
Identify what ‘success markers’ you will use to reflect on whether you have developed
A tip for mentees: What will change as a result of working with my mentor and how will I know this?
A tip for mentors: Listen with the intent to understand not answer – ask questions and say: ‘tell me more’.

THAT’S A WRAP FOLKS
‘Your personal brand is what you stand for – the values, abilities and actions that others associate with you. It impacts how you are perceived before anyone ever meets you. It
solidifies the “first impression” others have of you. Your personal brand tells others what they can expect when they deal with you. Already, others recognize your name, the work you do and what you’re all about. Their “read” on you may not be the brand you desire – but it’s
likely an honest reflection of the brand you actually have.’
