FROM THE PASTOR, Fr. ANTHONY MENDOZA
Join us next Sunday, October 7th
from 2 pm - 3 pm
for the annual LIFECHAIN.
This will be a peaceful time of prayer and witness to the sanctity of every life from conception to natural
death. We will meet on the sidewalks north of McPherson Rd. & Hillside Rd.
For more information, call Respect Life Office of the Diocese of Laredo, (956) 727-2140.
The Gospel of Life in a Culture of Death Ten years before his death, faced with many serious challenges to the Catholic faith, Pope John Paul II wrote a beautiful letter to the world, called “The Gospel of Life” (Evangelium Vitae, 1995). The future saint had experienced firsthand the extreme evils of which human beings are capable, having tragically lost many close family and friends, first to the Nazis, then to the Communists. The pope was well aware of modern dangers to human life, including infanticide, abortion, euthanasia and war. He proclaimed that we are living in a “Culture of Death” in which killing is seen as an acceptable solution to human problems and human suffering. In a real sense the modern “Culture of Death” is even worse than what has happened in the past, because in our times it has become so widely accepted. But St. John Paul II offered great hope that these evils could be overcome by living “The Gospel of Life.”
Every human life is sacred because every human soul is created directly by God at the moment of conception, and every human person is created to share in the perfect love and joy of God Himself, for all eternity (EV, #2). The sacred worth of every human being is shown most clearly because God Himself chose to become one of us and to live a life of loving service to all of us. Jesus demonstrated, especially by His concern for the poor, the widows, the sick and the social outcasts of His time, that every life is precious to Him. Finally, by His loving sacrifice on the Cross, Jesus most clearly showed us that our greatness is not found in selfishness, but in self
-sacrifice, by giving of ourselves in service to others (EV, #25). And so the Gospel of Life, the sacred dignity of each human being, is proclaimed in the very person of Jesus. How can the followers of Jesus foster the Gospel of Life? First by recognizing human life as a free and infinitely precious gift from God, as a preparation for an eternal life of joyful fellowship with God and His family (EV, 83). We celebrate the Gospel of Life by our worship of God, by our participation in the Sacraments, and especially by our everyday actions of truly loving other human beings (EV, 86). We must build a new Culture of Life, first within our faith communities, but also within those of different faiths and those of no faith (EV, 95). In proclaiming the Gospel of Life, we look to the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who gave great witness as to how human life is to be accepted and welcomed, even when it is very difficult to do so (EV, 102).

Santo Tomas More
