Historically, reptile substrates have been rather bland affairs, often centred on products produced for other industries, particularly horticulture. ark chips, beech chips, sands, corn cob and so on have been the mainstay of reptile keepers for many years and on the whole have been more than adequate. In fact, they still represent the vast majority of the reptile substrates available in shops today.

These traditional substrates “do what they say on the tin” (or bag!). They are materials that satisfy the welfare requirements of the animals, providing a suitable environment without being overly specialist or targeted. Over the last few years there have been more and more brands producing the same products creating a price spiral that can only go downwards.

As we know consumables are a vital part of the ongoing income stream of any shop. Indeed whilst the sale of an animal and set up is great, the real

margin is generated by the ongoing sales of products to the owner. Livefoods is the major consumable product line of course, with a keeper coming back week after week to buy their Livefood. There are other consumables that although bought less frequently, form a major source of income over the lifetime of an animal.

Substrate Special

From a marketing point of view these standard substrates can make

it difficult for a shop to stand out and gain a competitive advantage in a highly

competitive market. Stores need to gain market by choosing products that create a demand from the consumer that counters the constant falling prices. This means selecting quality brands that are not simply the cheapest available, but have been produced using high quality ingredients and are packaged well.

Materials should be clean and well graded, consistent and of a high quality, while the packaging needs to be bright, professional and most importantly well targeted to help consumers select a product by instantly providing the right cues for the buyer. The combination of quality products and good

packaging helps to impart a sense of quality and suitability.

On the whole consumers want the best for their pets and helping them make a choice that gives them this feeling will gain sales.

Some shops buy bulk materials and bag their own standard substrates. While this seems a good option when looking simply at the cost of the components other factors need to be taken into account. The cost and time of bagging, the generally lower acceptable RRP of self-bagged substrates and higher sales volume of professionally packaged products all need to be taken into account to determine the option that is actually the best.

Keepers wanting to do the best for their animals is currently driving a revolution in reptile substrates, leading to the creation of specially blended substrates formulated from different components to meet the specific needs of a species, or group of species, that require similar conditions. Each component imparts a particular quality to the mix, enabling it to be designed to fulfil a specific need.

Leading the way in this revolution is the “Life” series of substrates from ProRep consisting of 9 species specific products, including 4 which are brand new. These have been formulated to provide an “off the shelf” best option for keepers and together with carefully designed packaging create an option that stands out from other, more traditional products. By focussing on the main pet species, which forms over 80% of the market, the range has been created to meet the needs of as many keepers as possible but with the smallest number of products having to be stocked. Each product, with the exception of “Snake Life”, is unique and has been formulated to meet the needs of a particular species.

This is the original member of the life series and was formulated following the best practice recommendations of tortoise organisations. Consisting of a soil/sand mix, it is suitable for all arid habitat tortoise species, except those from very sandy habitats such as Egyptian Tortoises. It can also be used for any other reptiles that originate from similar habitats. This mix uses a professional quality screened topsoil and sand and not the cheaper lower quality products often seen. Tortoise Life enables tortoises to behave naturally, creating humid micro habitats which can help reduce pyramiding in growing animals.

Using moisture retaining organic components this substrate is suitable for all Tarantula species, including those that burrow. Additionally it can be used for many other invertebrates as a good moisture retaining substrate.

Snake Life is not a blended substrate but is produced from Lignocel, widely regarded as the best artificial substrate for many species of common pet snakes including Royal Pythons and Corn snakes. It would have been relatively easy to produce a blended substrate to fit the marketing of this substrate but in this case the best option was already available!

This blend is of course aimed at Crested Geckos, although it is also suitable for many other humid environment arboreal lizards, snakes, or even invertebrates. Its components create a moisture retaining, open substrate that will help maintain humidity but will not stagnate.

With Bearded Dragons being one of the most popular pet lizards a targeted substrate is bound to be popular. This natural looking substrate is a carefully blended sand/earth mix which enables the animals to show normal behaviour and retains moisture. It can also help reduce the possibility of impaction that can seen with pure sand under poor husbandry conditions.

This product is another earth and sand blend. The sand is a mixed particle size and this, together with some adjustments to the mix ratio, help mimic the stony desert soil found in their natural range. The characteristics imparted by the blended components lead to better moisture retention and thermoregulation characteristics than would be seen by using pure sand.

“Bio-active” terrariums containing living plants have recently seen a surge in interest. With these types of set ups, the keeper has two challenges; firstly to provide a habitat suitable for the animal, and secondly to provide the right growing conditions for the plants. With arid and forest set ups requiring very different conditions, ProRep have created two very different bio-active substrates for use in planted terrariums.

They are designed to provide the optimum pH, nutrients and moisture retention for the plants in the very different

environments, while creating a suitable environment for the animals. After all you wouldn’t plant a cactus in normal potting compost, so why would you use the same substrate in these very different habitats?

Drainage medium is an essential part of a bio-active set up and is used in both types of environment. It is used in the base of the terrarium to create a drainage layer which acts as a water reservoir, preventing waterlogging at the substrate.

The Exo Terra Repti Glo 10.0 has a very high UVB output similar to that associated with desert environments.

Desert locations receive more direct sunlight than any other because of fewer clouds, less air humidity and no plants or trees to provide shade. Therefore desert reptiles are more exposed to UV radiation than any other type of reptile. This bulb can also be used on screened terrariums or terrariums with dense screen covers to ensure UVB penetration. Dense screens can filter out up to 50% of the UVB rays.

The Exo Terra Repti Glo 2.0 is a general light source with a high visual light output and a very high colour rendering index (CRI), but a lower UVB radiation.

This bulb is suitable for snakes, all amphibians (frogs, toads and salamanders) and nocturnal animals. Plants thrive under this light too. It is also a perfect complementary light to a UVB bulb to boost visual light. T8 / 36” / 90CM / 30W.


The Exo Terra Repti Glo 5.0 has a moderate to high UVB output, similar to that of shady environments such as rain forests and other tropical locations.

Reptiles living in these habitats receive less UV radiation because of the many climatological conditions (fairly high humidity, changes in weather, etc) that prevent direct sunlight from reaching them or their basking sites.

The Orchid Mantis

With Invertebrates gaining a higher profile now is a good time to think about stocking some of the specialist products available. These animals are great for introducing new keepers to the world of keeping animals, as well as appealing to the more specialist invertebrate enthusiasts.

The commonly available species like stick insects, mantids and cockroaches have always been good sellers but these days we see many other species available, along with new products to go with them.

Both adult and larvae giant beetles are now regularly in stock. As well as the beetles themselves there is a range of beetle specific products available. Rearing kits, specialist larval foods and larvae rearing tanks are all unique products that can provide additional sales.

Ants are also now commonly available. Typically sold as mated queens or queens with a few workers they will live initially in their transport container for several weeks, even months, making them easy to maintain before sale. There are various ant nests available to sell along with the queens and this product range is bound to grow as time goes on.
