On Saturday at 08:15 Mitchell’s Plain po- lice were called out to the scene of a fire in MacBeth Street. According to reports, occupants staying in a Wendy house on the premises were alerted to the smoke coming from the house after the electricity tripped in the Wendy house, says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams. “They allegedly then knocked on the door to alert the sleeping occupants inside and then they saw that smoke was already com- ing from the house,” says Williams. Three children – a 3-year-old girl and two 13-year-old boys – were declared dead on the arrival of emergency services personnel. The bodies of four more people were later removed from the house. Four more people were taken to hospital in a critical condition. An 18-year-old man passed away on his way to hospital. A total of 14 people were in the house when the fire started and six children and two adults – aged between 18 months and 35 years old – perished in the fire. “After investigation by forensic fire ex- perts, it was confirmed the fire started due to an electrical fault and no foul play has been committed,” says Williams. Mayor Patricia de Lille issued a statement on Sunday expressing her heartfelt condo- lences to the family. “It is with overwhelming sorrow that we have learnt about the tragedy which has be- fallen the family of Patrick Abrahams of Eastridge. A fire led to the death of three of his children, his three grandchildren, his son-in-law and a family friend,” says De Lil- le. “We know nothing can ease their pain in the midst of this heartbreak, but we are at- tempting to assist this family in an effort to ease some of the strain.” The City of Cape Town’s disaster response team will be assisting the family with food parcels, blankets, clothing, vanity packs and building material. “Our thoughts are with Abrahams and his family during this time of immeasurable loss. We also carry the four family members who are still in hospital in our thoughts and wish them a swift recovery. It is my hope that the Abrahams family will find strength and comfort from their loved ones and all fel- low Capetonians, during this time of be- reavement,” she says. Brigadier Cass Goolam, Mitchell’s Plain police station commander also held a memo- rial service for the family yesterday (Mon- day) at Imperial Primary School. InMaywe launched aWalkingBus inWesbankand towards the end of the month we areplanning on rolling out the model in Leons-dale as well,” he says. When asked if the initiative would be

spread to other areas, Botha says: “TheWalking Bus initiative, due to its dependen-cy on community involvement to ensuresustainability, can be extended to any com-munity requesting it and the Department ofCommunity Safety will gladly assist as bestwe can to ensure that where there is a will-ing community to play a proactive role intheir own immediate community they findawilling partner through the Department ofCommunity Safety.”The initiative aims to create a safe and su-

ment officials and communities surround-ing Lentegeur High, Meadowridge Primary,Cornflower Primary, Lantana Primary andHyacinth Primary schools are making safe-ty a priority.

The event was well received and saw sev-eral parents and concerned residents jointhe first event. It was supported by the local neighbour-

the initiative every day. “The community ofLentegeur, like many other communitiesacross the province, faces many problems ofwhich crime, gangsterism and drugs are ofgreat concern. The communityofLentegeur, however, is a resilient communitywho regu-larly partners with the Department of Com-munity Safety through the different pro-

in theWalking Bus initiative by parents orparticipation in a neighbourhoodwatch, isa necessary step in rooting out crime fromwithin a community, says Plato.“The success of the Walking Bus initia-

tive and sustainability are dependent onthe community’s continued vigilance andprioritisation of the safety of our youth. The Department of Community Safety willcontinue to support this initiative inLente-geur and other participating communitiesas long as the communities’ concerns forsafety in their area are met with the will-ingness to help create safer environ-ments.”

Lucinda has afeel for filmA movie about an inspiring woman who

spoke up for other’s rights will soon hitthe silverscreen following a stint at a localfilm festival.Alison the Moviemade its World Premier

at the Encounters Film Festival that washeld in Cape Town this past weekend.Encounters is an international documen-

tary film festival and will see the film pre-mier in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Now with the powerful hybrid documen-

tary feature film wrapped up, aMitchell’s Plain woman playedan integral part as production as-sistant on the film.Lucinda Van De Rheede grew

up in Beacon Valley, and movedaway to Surrey Estate beforemoving back in 2009.“Remembering the distinct

words of my Afrikaans teacher(at Imperial Primary School) tell-ing me to be a psychologist andmy mom telling me I should be ajournalist, little did they knowthat filmmaking and what every-one had in mind would all add tomy time line. In my first year inhigh school I attended Ned Do-man Senior Secondary with therest ofmy cousins, and then it be-come too much and getting homelate from school was not going towork out for my cousin and my-self. We went school hopping inMitchell’s Plain and I could getinto any school, but because myoldest cousin attended CedarHigh in Rockland’s, that’s wherewe went until I matriculated,”she says. She completed her matric and wanted to

gain some computer skills.Following the completion of the course

she assisted her teacher with tutoring andwas one of the students selected for furthertraining at CPUT.“I studied filmmaking at Big Fish School

of Digital Filmmaking. I always dreamt ofbeing a filmmaker, but never knew it wouldbecome my reality,” she says. While studying, the class worked with

Carlini on preproduction of the film.“Carlini later asked us to motivate why

we should be a part of the project. It was tru-ly amazing to work on Alison and with theteam. I knew since day one that this film, being a true South African story made bya SouthAfrican director, wouldmake it big.I needed to get my spot on (the team), espe-cially coming from a community wherevery few people have a vision and childrenthink dreams can’t come true for them be-cause the environment,” says Van DeRheede. She is currently a freelance filmmaker,

and on production assistance at the En-counters Festival.“I also recently started a book club to up-

lift, inspire, change thinking and feed intowomenso thatwe cancontinue to strive andmake a difference into the lives of youngchildren, and in hope to unite parents, bothhusbands and wives, to feed and plant goodseeds into the lives of their childrenthrough reading,” she says.“A good book can do so much soothing to

the soul and be fun and exciting, which ismy next project for Women’s Month – to getbooks and donate to orphanages and shel-ters in the community.”FilmdirectorUgaCarlini says on the site:

“Accustomed as we are here to brutal actsof violence andwhere rape is commonplace, the horrific rape and attempted murder ofAlison Botha in December 1994 shocked thenation. This film recounts the events of the90 minutes that changed her forever, herhard-won physical recovery and the emo-tional and psychological healing which shehas sought through writing and speakingabout her experience.“Reimagining her life as a fairy tale, be-

ginningwithwhat she believes to be amira-cle, this is a story of extraordinary courage. We meet those who saved her life, pursuedjustice on her behalf, and the writer whohelped her put it all down – all still touchedby the ruin wreaked upon her, and her ex-traordinary rebirth.”V The movie is set to premier to the public in Augustin celebration of Women’s Month.

What if People’s Post wasn’t a newspaper,but a broadcasting agency?What if you weren’t bound to listen to

hyper-local news impacting on the suburbyou live in, but rather the southern sub-urbs as a whole? Would this contradictwhat People’s Post stands for?Followers of the newspaper on Face-

book would have noticed a new feature –a weekly wrap-up video – posted everyTuesday. In this short video some of thearticles that appear in the newspaper arehighlighted, givingyou thebiggestweeklynews from the southern suburbs in bite-sized chunks. Some broadcasters bringyou global news, some focus on a particu-lar city, but no-one targets a relativelysmall area such as the southern suburbs. This means, of course, that the newspa-

per continues to set the bar of hyper-localcontent across all mediums. The sameconcept has been embracedby

TygerBurger, People’s Post’s sister publi-cation in the northern suburbs. One of TygerBurger’s journalists, Bren-

den Ruiter, asked himself how one couldspread the news in a digital world, andmake it as easy as possible for Facebookusers to stay up to date. “The answer wassimple. Why not a weekly news bulletin? We started a fewweeks ago and the video’spopularity is for all to see. It’s still a workin progress, of course, with finer detailsstill being ironed out.”A couple of minutes a week to stay up

to date with news headlines? The viewer’sconvenience is clearly the watch word.Another imminent adoption will be the

rolling text at thebottom, whichwillmeanone can watch the video with no sound ifnecessary. In essence it is a news broad-cast with a very brief description of thechosen articles. If one snippet piques yourinterest then you can read more about iton the newspaper’s free website under theNews24 domain.People’s Post journalist and bulletin pre-

senter SamanthaLee says theadditional challenge hasbeenanexcitingventure thusfar. “It is no secret that newsand the media are moving in-to a digital space. This ven-ture helps us satisfy the newsneeds of those on the moveand assists our journalists intelling the inspiring stories ofothers that may not havemade it into the readers’ rele-vant editions. The responsethus far is an indication thatthis truly is a step in the rightdirection for our publica-tions.”Find People’s Post on Face-

Speech therapists at the Western Cape Re-habilitationCentre (WCRC) inLentegeur

have embraced the challenge to celebrateCommunicationWeekwith a difference thisyear.Three hospitals in the Western Cape par-

ticipated and included theWCRC, Red CrossChildren’s and Tygerberg hospitals.Communication Week was observed from

Monday 6 to Friday 10 June and the themeatWCRCwas: “Communication ismy super-power, what is yours?”The event was initiated by the National

Speech Therapy and Audiology Forum androlled out in each province to raise aware-

ness in various centres within the Depart-ment of Health. At theWCRC, the drive was run by speech

therapistsAliciaBock andMeganMorrison.“CommunicationWeek is a drive to create

awareness amongst our colleagues, caregiv-ers, patients and clients around the impor-tance of communication in their rehabilita-tion process, encompassing all aspects ofspeech-language and hearing.“We also try to highlight the capacity our

patients have despite their difficulties. Theyare still able to share their ideas and needs, through gestures and picture communica-tion, even if they cannot communicate ver-bally,” says Bock.WCRC provides specialised rehabilitation

services to people with physical disabilities

and those who have survived a brain or spi-nal cord injury. The speech therapy department provides

a predominantly in-patient service, but areconsulted on an ad hoc basis at outpatientservices.Bock says they see between 15 and 25 pa-

tients per therapist at any given time.“We aim to see each of our patients at least

once, and up to thrice, a week,” she says. The group held a series of mini events

through out the week, from a marshmallowchallenge to dressing up as superheroes.“[Some of the standout moments were at

the start of the week] with a marshmallowchallenge conducted with our colleagues onMonday. Volunteers placed six marshmal-lows in their cheeks then tried to communi-cate by engaging in dialogue about whatthey had for breakfast or did for the morn-ing. It delivered hilarious results,” saysBock. She explains this highlighted some of the

difficulties their patients face.“The full-mouth feeling and difficulty

communicating representswhat someof ourpatients experience after surviving a strokeor head injury,” she says.Another matter highlighted is that even

though verbal communication may havebeen challenging, they were still able to ex-press a response via hand gestures. The team also ran communication groups

with patients in the different therapy units.“We highlighted the strengths of superhe-

roes and how they often have to communi-cate to save the day. Sometimes they do notuse words, but codes, to get their messageacross. Patients made their own superheromasksas a symbol of their powersof commu-nication.“During the task they had to use sufficient

loudness to make requests, or use picturecards if they could not use verbal communi-cation, or gesture and point to their needs. We also looked at communicating with eachin our native language and gesture as a signof respect and strength to each other. Wegreeted and thanked each other in English,Afrikaans and Xhosa while using gestures,”she says. The initiative was further shared with

family of the patients who visited the centreduring the week.Bock and Morrison also dressed as super-

heroeswhile doing therapy every day for thefull duration of the weekThis bold, out-of-character move by the

therapists was enjoyed by the patients andmade them feel some excitement as well.“Hopefully by the display of their thera-

pists stepping out of their comfort zones itwas an encouragement for them to step outof their comfort zones to reach new heightsin their rehabilitation process as well,” saysBock.

Finding freedom frombehind prison barsTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

“True freedom is an inside job.”This is what SevaUnite in Claremont be-

lieves. They have been teaching prisonersyoga for the past six years. SevaUnite’s Pris-on Freedom Project teaches yoga and mind-fulness in prisons to alleviate suffering andreduce crime.“The affirming, healing and rehabilitative

benefits of yoga, related breathing and relax-ation practices for people living in stressfulenvironments are profound. Yoga can bringpeople to a state of oneness, unity, accept-ance and love, with ourselves and for allthose around us,” says Leela Codron, Se-vaUnite co-founder.The non-profit organisation practices yo-

ga with prisoners at Pollsmoor Prison inTokai everyday for an hour. A class has anaverage of 15 to 35 people.“We’re interested in the power that yoga

has, to help an individual transform fromthe inside. Overwhelmingly, prisons are notrehabilitation centers but places of violence, shame and punishment. And since 60 – 90%of inmates commit crimes within threemonths of release, we wanted to try and cre-ate a different world where upon release, ex-cons become contributingmembers of socie-ty,” says Codron.Codron says in a countrywhere people are

completely overpowered and bombarded byviolence and crime, they felt that doing thiswork is so critical in trying to make a differ-ence to the future of South Africa.“Not everyone incarcerated deserves to be

forgotten about. There is an extremely largeprisoner population that is creative, pur-poseful, kind and useful to society – they justneedassistance inbeingable to tap into theirinherent selves, to re-assess what they thinkthey are about, what they think they know.True freedom lies within, and we are inter-ested in helping other fellow human beingreally unlock their potential.”SevaUnite hopes to change inmates one

prisoner at a time. “We teach one yoga class. An inmate is inspired. He receives the freemanual, starts to teach himself and then toteach others through our free correspond-ence course. One inmate can inspire hun-dreds! It’s simple. We provide inmates withthe tools of yoga and mindfulness practices– through classes, correspondence coursesandmentorship. With regular practice, theydevelop self-awareness, forgiveness and per-sonal responsibility. This experience is soprofoundly transformative, that they are in-spired to share these practiceswith their fel-low prisoners,” says Codron.SevaUnite, togetherwith their volunteers,

identifies ways for you to selflessly serve, toexperience theuplifting effects of doing goodthings for others. “We see service as a pathto self-discovery and personal growth, self-less service which is performedwithout anythought of reward or personal benefit.”Currently they have over 250 people en-

rolled on their free six month correspond-ence course. “Those who are really interest-ed can then sign up for our free teacherstraining course, where they learn to becomeyoga teachers by teaching three to five fel-low inmates.”

SevaUnite teaches prisoners yoga as they believe true freedom is an inside job and yoga helpsprisoners reach to their inner selves.

New centre forfurry friendsCHEVON BOOYSEN

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA (CoGHSPCA) launched their newly construct-

ed state-of-the-art facility on Thursday lastweek.Patrons, animal guardians and sponsors

were given a preview of the new facility, theconcept of which was introduced duringlast year.Excited furry friends greeted visitors and

animal lovers on Thursday as they wel-comed them to their comfortable newcondi-tions.The premises in Grassy Park now hosts

the largest adoption kennel of its kind inSouth Africa – with bells and whistles.Longstandinganimal guardianGayleSly-

per sharedherpersonal experiencewith theSPCA.“I am very excited about this shelter. I en-

courage people to become involved by do-nating to our animal shelters. Our four-leg-ged friends need the help,” she says.CoGH SPCA CEO Allan Perrins says:

“With ever more animals requiring a safehaven from abuse and abandonment, theCoGH SPCA forged ahead with the con-structionmid-2015. Thedecision to invest ina redevelopment was seen as a vital movein securing the future sustainability of theorganisation as a whole.”He says the older buildings were over 20

years old and as such various structuralproblems were beginning to negatively af-fect the “overall efficacy of the facility andin order to best serve the animals an over-haul was necessary”.Build-A-WayBuildersworked in conjunc-

tion with Rennie Scurr Adendorff Archi-

tects to bring the vision of a 21st centurykennel into reality.Adendorff says the facility integrates

modern, state-of-the-art animal care habi-tats and support systems with a design thatmirrors the desired operational flow of peo-ple and animals into and out of the facility. The facility hosts quarantine, pre-adop-

tion and adoption pods which can accom-modate 300 individual animals. Before, due to space constraints, the

CoGH SPCA hosted up to three small dogsin one kennel.“We are able to reduce the risk of kennel

stress by giving each animal in our care aspace to call their own while still encourag-ing a degree of controlled socialisation. Thedogs and cats will now also be enjoying un-derfloor heating and improved biosecuritywhich will help us control the spread ofdeadly diseases,” says Belinda Abraham, astaffer at the SPCA.The furry friends also have dog beds

which are raised above floor level so thatthey do not sleep on the cold cement.Possible adoption families will also be

given the opportunity to go through anadoption process where they are taken pri-vately into an adoption room, where an as-sessment is done, to ensure that familiesadopt a pet that is best suited for theirhome.Possible fur parents also have the option

to familiarise themselves with a candidatepet in a viewing room instead of visiting thekennels, which could become overwhelm-ing.Each dog is also provided with a comfort-

able and hygienic dog beds thanks to Coola-roo Pet Beds.V To enquire about adoptions please call Kim on021 700 4152 or email adoptions@spcact.co.za

A passionate and dedicated group of danc-ers from Tafelsig will later this month

represent the Western Cape at a nationaldance competition. But the Devolution Dance Crew are in se-

rious need of support in getting their 15dancers to the competition. After winning the local Western Cape

Mega Crew competition on Sunday 15 May,the group has been selected to participate inthe nationals. The group comprises about 15 boys and girls– all from Tafelsig – and has been in exis-tence for 16 years. Devolution meets everyweek fromMonday to Thursday at the Fami-ly Centre in Kilimanjaro Street.Shamieg Allie, the dance coach, has been

with the crew since his brother started it in

2000.“My brother started the crew in 2000when

I was 13 years old. We started dancing atshows and when I was 14 I started takingover the crew and putting productions onstage. After that we started doing local com-petitions,” he says. This was the group’s first big competition.

“We always undermined ourselves and nev-er thought wewere good enough to beat any-one. Thiswinhas givenus ahuge confidenceboost,” Allie tells People’s Post. The group previouslymajored in freestyle

dance but have since made hip-hop theirmain genre.“We love to learn more. We also like put-

ting together the basics of different genresand create something different,” Allie says.He adds the dancers are passionate and

dedicated to dance, practising daily for fouror more hours.

“It is difficult at the moment because I amMuslim and it is Ramadaan. I usually speakto one dancer and leave them with themoves. After mosque I go look at theirprogress and perfect the routine,” he says. The crews will come from all over South

Africa to compete from Friday 24 to Sunday26 June at the CPUT Bellville Campus. The team is in need of sponsorship to get

them to the competition. It is estimated to cost around R1000 per

dancer.“It is a lot for each person to pay. We are

trying to do fundraisers, but it is difficult,”he says.

The dancers are aged from 13 to 23 yearsand the money covers travelling, registra-tion, kit and Western Province tracksuits.V If you would like to donate to the cause or sponsorthem, call Allie on 074 013 3300 or email shamiegal[email protected] or [email protected].

PENNED BY A JOURNO

Make a typo andthe errorists winWorking in thenewspaper industry is anun-forgiving career choice. Any mistake youmight make, down to a typo caused by yourslow ring finger, is there for all to see.The embarrassment of having your mis-

take as front page news is one of the reasonsjournalists check facts and dates and see ev-ery story triple checked. But we are still hu-man and prone to errors.Worse still is that newsrooms around the

world are shrinking. Fewer people arewear-ing more than one hat under demandingdeadlines. Gone are the days that the jour-nalist were only responsible for getting andfiling their story, because the photographer, pageplanner, layout artist andvarious copy-editors would see to the rest.At People’s Post, our journalists, on aver-

age, work on two editions, covering dozensof suburbs. They’re responsible to fill theseeditions with both articles and photos, fromback to front, every week while attendingmeetings and events late at night and overweekends. And then there are the two tothree hour long (sometimes half a day) coun-cil meetings that take place at least once amonth. Most of these stories are gathered and

written over three or four days for a weeklydeadline. Some journalists also have extraproduction duties – page planning, subbingand layout – added to their workload ondeadline days. As anyone who works in thatkind of high-pressured industry will under-stand: it’s no easy feat. And they still do their workwith integrity

and honesty, with a smile on their faces anda kind word for any reader theymight meet.In each story, we have to guard against a

range of ethical principles, ensuring fair-ness to both parties, and objectivity. Withthe amount of misinformation we sift

through, there are much worse errors wecould make than a spelling or grammar er-ror.To prevent those nasty little spelling and

grammar gremlins, our editor and subeditorcheck anything between 120 and 160 pagesin our 10 zoned editions – in a day and a half.To fill just a quarter of a page is between 350and 500 words. You can do the maths to un-derstand the sheermagnitude of their work.If you were to look at our error rate (we’d

confidently put it at less than 1%), we’re do-ing better than the airline industry. And often after triple checking every arti-

cle, as was the case last week, an error slipsthrough and is spotted only after it has beensent to theprinter (“Librarypeddles forpow-er”, People’s Post False Bay, 7 June). And when it comes to the cost of calling

back a page to fix that error – unless it’s afactual error that will land us in hot waterwith the ombudsman or in court – we’d rath-er swallow our pride and take the flack fromour loyal errorists. We might sound superhuman, but we’re

really not. That’s why we appreciate everyreader that alerts us to these errors. But telling a journalist they aren’t quali-

fied, or shouldn’t have their jobs over a spell-ing or grammar error, is uncalled for. We’ve put our hearts into giving you the

best work we can. So when you notice we’veslipped up, be kind to us – we’re doing thebest we can to bring you the best qualitynews.V Peddle vs Pedal: “Pedal always relates to bicycles, pianos, organs, boats, looms, sewing machines, andother machines. The pedals are the footoperatedcomponents. The word also functions as a verb meaning to operate pedals. Peddle is a verb meaning tosell or to travel about selling goods. It often refers tothe sale of illicit goods.” – Grammarist.com

Give addicts afair chanceSeeing that it’s Youth Month I havetaken it upon myself to share with youa problem that our youth faces today –the problem of drug addiction. Not only does the addiction seem to

be the main problem but these addictsfind it extremely hard to find workonce they have decided to turn theirlives around.I know exactly what I am talking

about, because for me finding workwas a huge problem because of mycriminal record. Most companies state that you

should be criminal and credit clear. Sohow are the recovering addictssupposed to then become “normal”members of society if they cannot findwork? This further irritates the issuebecause it leaves room for depressionand feelings of unworthiness.I feel that companies should em-

brace these individuals for making thechoice to turn their lives around, ittakes character and determination –something that any and every employ-er should want in an employee. So to all the employers out there,

most addicts are very skilled, perfec-tionists and extremely loyal. Do whatneeds to be done, test them regularlyfor drugs and even watch them closelybut do not cast their CV’s aside. If they can show amazing character

so can you.EMILE NAIKER

Emile YX? goes internationalLOUISA STEYL

@LouSteyl

He’s a community activist, an ed-ucator, a father, a husband and

a hip-hop artist.Emile YX? – or Emile Jansen as

his family know him – is nostranger to Cape Town and SouthAfrican hip-hop fans. In fact, theBlack Noise founding member hasbeen instrumental in growing thelocal hip-hop scene. But his many achievements will

be introduced to an internationalaudience later this year whenBreak like You, a documentaryabout his work, will be screened atthe inaugural New York Hip-HopFilm Festival.“The documentary producers in-

terviewed various people andheard about my story from somepeople and they just approachedme about telling my story,” Emileexplains of the short film shot byMehreen Afzal and Melissa House,as part of the Barefoot Workshops, last year.“It’s a very honest story about

being a community activist, father, husband, artist, educator througharts and culture and how healingcan happen through giving of one-self.”The film comes off the back of a

busyperiod forEmilewho recentlywon the SABC 3 breakfast showEs-presso’s Mandela Monday Awardalong with a LeadSA Hero Awardin April. He’s also just sent five dancers to

compete at Battle VNR in Franceand has just wrapped up Positive

Poster Week, a campaign runthrough his Heal the Hood project.Emile started Heal the Hood as

a community organisation in 1998with the aim to “change minds tochange action”. The non-profit or-ganisation has since grown fromstrength to strength, raising mon-ey to help send 194 performers tointernational competitions overthe years. The organisation’s focus this

year is on eight schools and twocommunity centres on the CapeFlats where they inspire youngpeople to become “artistically ac-tive” through songs, music videosand books.“We are also focussing our ener-

gies on changing the negative dia-logue that dominates the CapeFlats youth to a positive one of out-comes and action.”Emile’s own artistic journey

started with breakdancing, beforehewent on to try his hand at graffi-ti, beatboxing and rapping – all ele-ments of hip-hop culture. Dancingis what first attracted him to theculture and he says it challengedhis fear of people seeing him “inthe middle of a circle”.“Without me knowing it, it was

about me finding me and showingmyself to the world.”As a man of few words, when

Emile found himself writing, hesays he knew he had to do some-thing about it. This is a philosophythat he’s carried throughouthis ca-reer and why he now calls himselfa “reactionary activist”. “We didnot have a space, so we took actionanddancedon the streets,” he says.

“We took action to teach each oth-er, ourselves, and that’s activism.”When Emile and his crew found

themselves with no events to per-form at, they created their own, be-fore creating competitions andthen touring; first nationally andthen internationally. With no“how-to” guide, they printed theirown CDs, DVDs and books and cre-ated their own production to beable tomakea living from their art.It was the beginning of what

would become a vibrant South Af-rican hip-hop culture. “We areproud to say that we played a rolein making that dream a reality formany people today. My main rea-son was always about my creative

desire tomakenew things. Toman-ifest the word and show youth thatwith determination and persever-ance anything is possible.”Emile’s contributions tohis com-

munity have been highlightedmost recently throughhisMandelaMonday Hero award and LeadSAaward, but last year he was alsochosen as the face of the MoshitoMusic Conference where he wasawarded for his contribution tohip-hop and the year before sawhim winning an Honorary Awardat the South African Hip-HopAwards.His work is about more than

awards through. “As a citizen, it ismy duty to take action on civic is-

sues. It is the very foundation ofour responsibility we have to-wards each other and then collec-tively as a nation to manifest realdemocracy with informed deci-sions.”For Emile, this also means lead-

ing by example and “not just talk-ing about change, but takingactionto make it real.”The action-taker will soon be

heading to America to see his sonand wife who are with her familyin Ohio, before heading to the NewYork Hip-Hop Film Festival. He’llbe back in Cape Town in mid-Au-gust to host the Cape Flats FilmFestival before going into studio towork on his ninth solo album. Alsoon his agenda for the rest of theyear are his first DVD compilationmade up of music videos and abook about Black Noise and hip-hop inCapeTown. He’s also consid-ering a doctorate in Education andHip-Hop Pedagogy at an interna-tional university.Emile will participate in a Q&A

session after the screening ofBreak likeYouandwill beusing theopportunity to invite internationalfilm makers to participate in Healthe Hood projects and the CapeFlats Hip-Hop Film Festival sched-uled for December. He’s also assistingBreak likeYou

producers Mehreen Afzal and Mel-issa House with fundraising fortheir NewYork trip and to turn thedocumentary into a full length fea-ture.V Anybody interested in helping withEmile’s fundraising efforts can contact himat [email protected] or 082 395 8125.

My name is Miriam 45 years testify about themiracles that Prof Danish performed in mylife. I am one of the people who lost a lot ofmoney to the so called doctors but when Iread the testimony Hilda wrote about ProfDanish, I decided to try again and called ProfDanish and he toldme all will be finewithmeif only I believe in him. My life was a mess, Ihad big debts, working for 5 years with nomoney, that time my boyfriend had left me,he used a crystal ball eye and gave me amagic ring which helped me. My boyfriendcame back and I am now financially stable. My court cases were dismissed and I livehappily now.

Table set for Tafelsig, Beacon HillJOSEPH PILLAY

Beacon Hill and Tafelsig high schoolscould not be separated at the top of theMRP Foundation High Schools Soccer

League-Mitchell’s Plain standings as bothsides pulled off 1-0 victories against SpineRoad and Princeton respectively at theMRPSports Complex in Westridge on Saturday. The pacesetters are perched at the top

with 16 points apiece from six matches. However, their much-anticipated the top-

of-the table clash this Saturday will not onlybe an exciting and riveting showdown, butwill offer the opportunity for the winningteam to create some daylight between themand the chasing pack.Meanwhile, Azola Billy’s goal was all Bea-

con Hill High needed beat Spine Road HighSchool.Wilbur Beukes, coach of Beacon Hill, says

his charges found the going a little trickyagainst Spine Road. His team reacted by ap-proaching their opponents differently andemploying their natural game plan in thehope that they will gain the tactical edge.“I think the adjustment to our plan

worked well as we came out of the gate fastin the first half, pushing Spine Road anddominating the field. Keith October helpedto create the first goal when he took the balltowards the end line, playing it into the box.A deflection off the opposition defenderfound the feet of Billy and scored a well tak-en goal that enabled us win,” Beukes added.Morné Kleinhans, Spine Road High’s

coach, was a bit frustrated with his team asTapey Fredericks, Fahrudeen Oliver andZubairHeyns created ample chances but lefttheir scoring boots at home.

Tafelsig HighIt was primarily the Tafelsig goalkeeper

ClaytonduPlessis that thwartedPrinceton’schances at victory as the custodian deliv-ered point-blank saves to deny MatthewTiemie and Cole Hartzenberg in particular.“Tafelsig’s goalie deserved the player of

the match award,” said Princeton High’smentor, Charles Uys.Andrew Geldenhuys’ Tafelsig side would

also claim that they shaded their opponentsin the final third and played neat one-touchfootball and had Emeraan Rayners and Gio-

vanni Jaftha converted their chances theycould have won by a bigger margin.

Glendale HighTwowell executed goals byMickyleHen-

dricks andKyleRhode, gaveGlendaleHighreason to celebrate their first win of theseason after their sixth attempt. They up-set the form book in beating a demoralisedWestridge High 2-0 andmoved up five posi-tions after languishingat the foot of the log.It wasWestridge’s third defeat of the sea-

son and it comes on the back of a slump inform after losing their last two matches ina row.

Cedar HighCedar High School’s change in fortune

has put the spring back into their coach’sstep.A two-goal tonic through the efforts of

Dyllin Rossouw put Mervyn Gronewald’sCedar side on the road victory after Da-woodLawrencehadgivenOvalNorthHigha 1-0 lead.“We are improving after experiencing

mixed fortunes in our earlier matches, butI am confident if we do bag a fewmore goodresults our way we could finish the seasonfairly well,” said Groenewald. The results of the other four matches

Stanturf ready for tournamentEARL HAUPT

@EarlHaupt

Stanturf Football Club, formed 25 yearsago in the heart of theRocklands, previ-ously known as Turf United and Stan-

ton FC, is looking forward to the Kenparku.23 tournament, taking place this weekend.A total of 24 teams from across the city,

including defending champions GlendeneUnited, will take to Kenpark United’s fieldsin Mitchell’s Plain to showcase their risingtalent.According toStanturf’s u.23 coach, Jeanne

Valentyn, his charges are excited at theprospect of rubbing shoulders with some ofthe city’s more renowned clubs, after quali-fying for this year’s tournament after a 16-year absence.Valentyn attributes the barren period to

a number of factors, which ended in theirclub losing the bulk of their youth playersover the years.“With many ups and downs in the club as

well as the community,we still had the gameof football at heart. As a former junior player(myself), it was then a joy to play and as timewent past our community, (others) becameinvestedwith gangsters and the use of drugsincreased, especially within the youth. Weended up losing players as well as a loss ofinterest in the game. Keeping the youth mo-tivated and interested in the game was hardand as an amateur club, finding attackingplayers was difficult,” he states. He says that the only other way to lure tal-

ent back to the club was to enter in well-known tournaments which may provide a

gateway onto a bigger platform, where aplayer may have the opportunity of plyingtheir trade professionally. “The players areexcited, preparing to showcase their talentandhopefully impress to possibly fulfil theirdreams and make it in this industry.

“We recently partnered up with a localMitchell’s Plain business that has now as-sisted us with a sponsor, so that we can alsolook the part.”The team held a kit launch with their

sponsor on Thursday 9 June, which brought

a renewed spark to the squad ahead of thetournament proper this weekend.“Just to see the faces of our boys, excited

to receive a small gift, this could not havebeen possible if we did not engage in thisventure.”

Stanturf recently held a kit launch for their u.23 team. The team will be competing with 23 other teams from across Cape Town in the Kenparku.23 tournament this weekend.
