and found both taxis parked on the side ofthe road. Four occupants of the second taxiwere injured after their taxi rear-ended theother taxi,” says Meiring.Paramedics extricated the four patients
and treated them for their injuries. Theywere then transported to Mitchell’s PlainHospital for further treatment.A head-on collision took place onMorgen-

confirm two cars were involved in the crashwhich killed four people and injured a fifthperson.“Shortly before 10:00 paramedics from
ER24 and local emergency services arrivedon the scene, where they found two womenand a man, believed to be in their thirties, still trapped in a vehicle. All three sustainedfatal injuries and therewasnothing that par-amedics could do for them. They were de-clared dead on the scene,” says ER24 spokes-
person Werner Vermaak.Another man was found inside one of the
cars with critical injuries. He later died inhospital.“Another woman was found with serious
injuries. Shewas extricated from thevehicleand treated formultiple fractures. Paramed-ics rushed her through to Groote SchuurHospital for furthermedical care,” addsVer-maak.The exact cause of this collision is not yet
known. On Tuesday 8 March, a traffic officer was
killed in a head-on collision on JakesGerwelDrive after a taxi lost control andveered intooncoming traffic. The taxi driver fled thescene but was later arrested at his home inMfuleni (“Taxi driver arrested after crash”,
People’s Post, 15 March).Motorists are also urged not to drink and
drive.Richard Coleman, spokesperson of the
City’s Traffic Services, says they arrested 34motorists for drunk driving betweenWednesday 16 and Sunday 20 March.“The City encourages motorists to make
sure that their cars are safe and that all pas-sengers are buckled up,” says Coleman.Meiring adds drivers should also ensure
they are well rested and alert.“Motorists planning on travelling are also
encouraged to take regular breaks duringlong journeys, keep a safe following distanceand to abide by the rules of the road, includ-ing adhering to speed limits and not drink-ing and driving,” says Meiring.

Bunny makesegg-stra hopLast week the Easter Bunny could not bedistracted by the aroma of hot cross bunsand pickled fishwafting on the south-easteraround the Peninsula. He had more important business with avisit to young patients at the Red CrossWarMemorial Children’s Hospital. These youngsters received an egg-straspecial treat when the Easter Bunny ar-riveda fewdays early tomakea special visitto the hospital on Thursday.Every year the Easter Bunny, accompa-nied by various guests, visit the children tospread joy and brighten their day by shar-ing hugs and handing out Easter treats.TheEaster goodies are donated to thehos-pital by various organisations through theFriends of the Children’s Hospital Associa-tion (Focha), a non-profit organisationbasedat thehospital that providesnon-med-ical support to patients and their families. The event is one of twoannual eventsheldat the hospital that are designed to includehospitalised children in festivities theywould ordinarily miss out on and to spread
joy at times which would be tough for chil-dren and their families to spend in hospital.“There is nothing better than a goodfriend, except a good friend full of surpris-es,” said the Easter Bunny before happilyhopping between wards.“The best part of my Easter weekend isvisiting my friends here at the Red CrossWar Memorial Children’s Hospital. Noth-ing brings me more joy than being able tobrighten their lives over the Easter period. The visit always sets the tone for the restof my Easter.”Angelique Jordaan, hospital spokesper-son, was also very grateful for the visit.“We are very grateful for all the Eastergoodies for thepatients.Thishasput a smileon the children’s faces and made their stayin hospital over the Easter period slightlybetter by distracting them from the reasonthey are in hospital.“Thank you to everyonewho donated andthank you to Focha for ensuring that the pa-tients do not miss out on Easter celebra-tions,” she said.

Make compost at homeNICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
In an attempt to reduce waste dumped inlandfills, the City of Cape Town council isembarking on a project to encourage resi-dents to make compost at home. The City will make 5 000 home-compost-ing containers available for free to qualify-ing homeowners. The distribution, discussed in a reportwhich appeared before a recent Good HopeSubcouncil meeting, follows a researchproject carried out at over 600 homes inHeathfield, Edgemead, Bongweni andScottsville in 2013 and 2014.The project, which also included commu-nity centres in Kensington, Atlantis andKhayelitsha, showed a 91% participationrate. On average 17kg of household waste
and 13kg of waste were diverted at commu-nity organisations every month. The study found that almost all of the par-ticipants had previously thrown their or-ganic waste in their wheelie bins, but afterthe study three-quarters of them were com-posting at home.Based on this, the City’s solid waste man-agement department agreed to distributethe 5 000 composting containers. The samenumber of containerswill be distributed forthe next three years.Residents can apply and will be placed ona waiting list. The homeowner will have tohave a secure garden with at least 1m² anda minimum of 30m² of greenery. Only thehomeownermay apply and only single resi-dences will be considered.Theproject is expected tobe launchedandadvertised next month.
Free museum shows offpolice tools in MuizenbergTIYESE JERANJI
@jeranji
The police are urging the youth to makegood use of the Muizenberg Police Muse-um,whichwas reopened lastWednesday. The museum was first opened in 1990but had to be closed a few years ago dueto damage. Following a revamp it was of-ficially opened to the public by NathiNhleko, national police minister lastweek. He was joined by deputy ministerMaggie Sotyu, Lieutenant-GeneralKhomotso Phahlane, acting police com-missioner, and Lieutenant-GeneralKhombinkosi Jula amongst others. The museum, the first of its kind in theprovince, is located where the old Muiz-enberg police station was. Entrance isfree. Many items of interest are on display, including criminal cases, a prison cell, old guns and an old charge office.Phahlane says community membersmust make good use of the museum.“The reopening of the museum createsa platformwheremembers of the commu-nity can familiarise themselves with thework of the police. Make sure of it, learnfrom it.“This is a critical platform whichserves as a reminder of where we comefrom and where we are.“We hope the museum will do justiceand continue to educate everyone. Youngpeople must take advantage of this facili-ty,” he says.Last week’s opening ceremony waspart of a three-phase outreach pro-gramme by the top police officials. The second leg of the outreach pro-
gramme led them to Lavender Hill wherethey stopped at theVillage care centre be-fore they proceeded to a sports fieldwhere community members were gath-ered and had waited patiently for them.Their aimwas to talk to the communityand to address their challenges, as wellas to make a call to work hand in handwith the police. Issues on the table weresafety, crime, drugs, guns and gangster-ism in the area.Addressing the gathering Phahlanesaid it was time to not only focus on drugusers but drug dealers aswell. He said po-lice couldn’t do that alone and neededcommunity members to work with them.“Police will never win if they workalone. We are coming back to you to en-gage so that we can come with lasting so-lutions to save our communities. Wewant to hear your problems so that wecan go back to the board and see how wecan address them.”He also urged community members tonot interfere with police when they weredoing their work.“If we attack the police we are depriv-ing ourselves of the services they have tooffer us. Allow them to do their job; allyou can do is to work with them, not toattack them or even burn their vehicles,”he said.Provincial police minister Dan Platosaid at the gathering it was time peoplegave information to the police.“These people committing crime, sell-ing drugs, involved in gangsterism don’tcome from space.“They are in our community and weknow them. Report to the police so thatthey can be arrested,” he said.

A pilot project launched in Mitchell’sPlain last year will now be implemented
permanently. The project, aimed at bringing care closer
to patients who cannot access hospitals, now sees care workers serving about 2700people with disabilities in the Mitchell’sPlain subdistrict.
The aim of the pilot was to deliver accred-ited rehabilitation care worker training.Twenty-eight of the graduates of the train-ing programme have found local work.
Of these, 20 workers are fromKlipfonteinandMitchell’s Plain, with 12 of them basingtheir work in Mitchell’s Plain.
The group reaches 136 families throughtheir community-based services.
“The main aim of this project was to im-prove access to specialist rehabilitation ser-vices at community-based services. Careworkers have undergone an intensive two-year training period. The practical trainingwas inclusive of adult, paediatric, commu-nity and intermediate care exposure,” saysFatima Peters, comprehensive health pro-
grammes manager. The trainees graduated in 2014 with a
higher certificate in Disability Studies.“The key objective of this project was to
improve access to this important service. This has been achieved with several indi-vidual success stories in the Mitchell’sPlainarea.Clientswhopreviously couldon-ly access the service at one of the very con-gested community health centres can nowbe seen in their homes, appropriate commu-nity-based sites and in the intermediatecare facilities in Mitchell’s Plain (foradults) and in Klipfontein (for children),”says Peters. If you would like to get involved, contact
any of the following people:. Peters on 021 370 5006 or [email protected]. Ruwayda Hull (occupational therapist)on 021 370 5000 or [email protected]. Nerosha Mohamed (speech therapist)on 021 370 5015 or [email protected]. Waseema Abrahams (audiologist) on021 370 5056 or [email protected]

LOTUS RIVER
‘Burglar’, dog killed in Lotus RiverCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
A 34-year-oldmanwasmauled to death lastweekby twodogsduringa suspectedbur-
glary at a home in Lotus River.A graphic video that went viral on social
media shows the alleged burglar being bit-ten by two dogs while bystanders try to di-vert the dogs’ attention by throwing bricksand stones.Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith,
Grassy Park police spokesperson, says: “Aninquest docket was opened atWoodstock po-lice station after a man of Lotus River diedin hospital after he was bitten by dogs onpremises in Lotus River. What we can con-firm is that the man does not stay on thepremises where the dogs attacked him. He
was still alive when he was transported tohospital.”The incident occurred last Monday at
about 15:30, Kleinsmith says.“We are awaiting the docket fromWood-
stock police thereafter it will be investigat-ed byGrassyParkpolice as an inquest. Oneof the dogs was shot on the scene by policeto protect and assist the man who was bit-ten by the dogs,” she says.In the video a bystander can be heard
saying “because he wants to steal here sothe dogs catched him”.During the eight-minute video the man
is bitten by the dogs until shots are fired.People have displayed outrage on social
media, saying “the dogs were protectingtheir property. The man got what he de-served.”
Someone else wrote: “I have no sympathyfor the man! The dogs were protecting theiryard and one got killed for doing so, whichis very upsetting.”PhilipBam, spokespersonof the local com-
munity police forum, says the incident isunfortunate.“We do regret the loss of life and send our
condolences to the family and loved ones ofthe man who died. However, we need tomake it clear that residents have the rightto protect their properties, especially withthe lack of service from our police.”He adds: “Police are always encouraging
residents to do what it takes to protect theirproperty. Criminals should understand thatwhen you enter a person’s property withcriminal intent, you will have to bear theconsequences.”

A fraudster is making his way throughGreenhaven, Surrey Estate, Gatesville, Ry-lands and surrounding areas.According to Umesh Vallabh of Green-
haven Crime Watch, the man, who goes bythe name of Rushaad, tells unsuspectingresidents, especially elderly residents, sobstories about his terminally ill wife or chil-dren. He preys on people to give him grocer-ies and money.“He is well-dressed and well-spoken, so it
is easy to fall for his tactics.Hewas reportedto have been inside homes, so it just showshow convincing he can be.“If he is spotted please report him to your
closest neighbourhood watch,” Vallabh ur-ges.He says that despite residents exposing
the man’s activities on WhatsApp groups, they still need to get the word out to moreunsuspecting residents.Vallabh says the man goes by several ali-
ases and that he lives behind the Vygiesk-raal vlei.
“He frequents Surrey Estate, Greenhav-en, Penlyn Estate, Rylands, Gatesville andthose type of areas at the moment. He is in-timidating as such as he is crooking the peo-ple.“If we see him around, we immediately
ask him to leave the area because he is notwelcome.“We can’t actually tell what he will do if
he has a chance to do something inside thehome. The police are also aware of him, butnobody has laid a case against him, so thepolice can’t actually do something and in-vestigate him,” he adds.Vallabh also says themanwas confronted
by a community member, with the policebeing called in, but the man was releasedas there were no prior arrests or casesagainst him.Lieutenant Ian Bennett, Manenberg po-
lice’s spokesperson, says in order for themto bring justice to the people, there needsto be cases made for an investigator to takeup a complaint of that nature.“The long arm of the law is long, but it
is also patient, so you need to build a case,”he says.

PENNED BY A JOURNO
You don’t drive aloneI have been a licenced driver for a few yearsnow and because of my job, how far awayfrom civilisation I live and the lifestyle Ilead, I spend much of my life behind thewheel. In a bid to drive the fastest, nicest, coolest
or flashiest car we can afford, drivers thesedays seem to forget howmuch of a responsi-bility it is to be in control of a vehicle. In a rush to get where we need to be, the
common courtesies that need to be shownwhile driving, especially on our nationalroads, are blatantly ignored by some. This morning, on my 44km commute to
the office, my driver-side mirror became acasualty of what can only be referred to asnegligent driving.Driving at 120km/H in the fast lane onone
of our national roads, I wasmetwith the un-welcome invasion of a work truck whosedriver felt it was okay to cross three lanesstraight from the off-ramp.In a bid to avoid an accident that could
have claimed my life (and maybe the truckdriver’s too, seeing as he was not wearinghis seat belt) I swerved onto the shoulder, hitting my mirror on the barrier wall. The
truck was right next to my car at the time.Tomany thismaynot seem like a big deal,
but the other driver refused to acknowledgeany wrongdoing and flashed me the al-mighty middle finger.A quick check of your blindspot before
changing lanes would be appreciated nexttime. It is behaviour like this that really needs
to change. The road is for us all. Not onlyfor those drivers who continue to force oth-ers off the road, who think the safe followingdistance is an invitation to change lanes, who drive as if their tyres are not allowedto touch the tar andespecially thosewhoareirresponsible in thinking their actions willnot affect others.Robots, stop and yield signs, speed limits
and other road rules are not suggestions. The most dangerous drivers are not only
thosewho drive drunk, it is especially thosewho drive for themselves. The reality iswhenyouget behind thewheel, you take thelives of all the other drivers around you inyour hands.Next time you drive, think about your ac-
tions.
Speeding concernson Dido Valley RoadAs a regular pedestrian of Dido ValleyRoad through Woodlands, I have recentlybeen very concerned about the excessivespeed with which motorists are travellingboth up and down this road.
I have, in the last three months, noticed a substantial increase in speedingmotorists, as well as a substantialincrease in the frequency of motoristsusing this road.
On not one occasion have I seen anymotorist abide to the speed limit, what Ibelieve to be 60km/H.
About a month ago, I unfortunatelysaw an owl knocked down. And now, justa week ago, I saw what I think was ahawk being ridden over by a speedingmotorist.
In my time using this road, both as a
pedestrian and motorist, I have seen onmore than one occasion antelope standingin the middle of the road near the crestof the hill.I’ve since taken an interest in why this
road is used to speed along and havefound out that it is the only free-flowingexit for Red Hill Road via the naval baseand the residents of Da Gama Park,Woodlands and Welcome Glen. All otherexits have had either natural or con-structed speed enforcements put in place, such as stop streets and speed humps.I would like to urge the authorities to
at least investigate the possibility of someform of speed restrictions to prevent thenext accident from happening.

My story led to opportunity of a lifetimeFive years ago I was in Grade 11 andneeded funding for a student exchangetrip to Germany. One of your journalistswrote an article and told my story.Through the article I received a sponsorwho funded my trip during which I meta German teacher and principal.
Two years later they offered me anopportunity of a lifetime and I had achance to further my studies at any
institute of my choice and in any coursehere in Cape Town. They covered all mytravelling costs, medical costs and fees.Today I am a qualified beauty therapistworking in Rondebosch.Thank you so much – if it wasn’t for
that article I don’t know what wouldhave become of me.

Heroes gaveus our rightsOn 21 March, South Africans officiallycelebrate Human Rights Day, declared apublic holiday in 1994 following theinauguration of then president NelsonMandela.
Monday’s celebration paid tribute tothose 69 unarmed persons who lost theirlives and the countless injured in theirpursuit to ensure freedom, fairness andopportunities for all South Africans.
The protest was against the pass lawsat the time. The pass law was alsohumiliatingly referred to as the dompasand was a particular indignation forblack men who had to produce it ondemand and could be arrested anddetained on the spot if they did nothave it on them.
Also referred to as heroes’ day, theevent marked an awakening across theworld to the inhumanity of the apart-heid regime. However, it also meant thestart of the end for peaceful protestsagainst apartheid in South Africa.
My appeal to you, the unregisteredvoter, the one who enjoys the freedomof religion, belief and opinion, freedomof expression, freedom of associationand the right to education is to bereminded of those who lost their livesto ensure we have these rights.
In addition to accessing these rightslet all of us be mindful of the associatedresponsibilities.
So, don’t say “I don’t need to vote” or“My voice does not matter” but, rather,as an affected stakeholder, find medi-ums to convey your concerns or supportpertaining to issues that affect all SouthAfricans.

“You will never know how strong youare until being strong is the only
choice you have.”This is a message on an art block that Jo-
hannes Mokobi (24)sprayed on a block. He isselling it for a living inMuizenberg and the sur-rounding areas.Beside being a message
that he sells to make endsmeet, it has become a pillarof strength for him becauselife knocked him down sev-eral times but he was ableto stand up again.Abandoned at a crèche in
Johannesburg by his fatherwhen he was only threemonths old he was raisedby an elderly woman whotook him in.He managed to stay with
her till he turned 17. Life be-came difficult when shedied. One of the old wom-an’s children let the house and Mokobi waskickedout ashedidn’t bring anything to thetable. He dropped out of school while in Grade
9. He tried and failed to get bursaries so thathe could finish his matric. In 2011 he came to Cape Town in pursuit
of a better life but it didn’t work out.“I went back to Joburg. I was confused,
I didn’t know what to do. Life was not easy.I was on the streets, tried to make endsmeet. Iwouldmakemoney; theproblemwasI didn’t know what I wanted. I had a lot of
friends andwewoulduse thatmoney.Whenthe money was finished, the friends woulddisappear and I was left alone,” he says.He had to decide what he wanted to do
with his life. Hemoved to Cape Town again. He now stays at the Haven night shelter
in 10th Avenue in Retreat.Paying at least R84 a weekfor the shelter, he says lifeis not easy.“It’s better, because I
have a place to hide myhead, but it’s difficult. Youhave to be out of the shelterby 06:30 and you don’t get torest. Iwant to savemoneyaswell so that I can find betteraccommodation,” he says.He started projects to
keep himgoing but it wasn’ta walk in the park. He start-ed a car wash business andsells his art blocks. He alsocleans windows and otherthings. He is trying to savemoney
for better accommodationand to pay for a web devel-opment course.
“I want a better life for me. I’m trying tosave money so that I can finish my courseand make something out of my life. Thingshave been tough for me, but when I look atwhere I came from and where I am now Ican only be hopeful. I haven’t lost hope thatone day things will look up for me. While they are all well-knownCape Townmusicians in their own right, the mem-
bers of TopDog SA are gearing up to playtheir first festival in front of their homecrowd at the Cape Town International JazzFestival this week. The band – made up of Don Vino (saxo-
phone), Camillo Lombard (keyboards),Charlton Daniels (bass), Mornay Hofmees-ter (drums) and Mark Williams (guitars) –hail from suburbs across Cape Town. The musicians were on tour with Tevin
Campbell andpreparing for a showat Johan-nesburg’s Carnival City when Camillo cameup with the idea to start a band.“We were individuals at the time; we used
to work together a lot, but we weren’t aunit,” Camillo explains.Camillo also came up with the name Top-
Dog, even though Charlton wasn’t too im-pressed with it.“I thought it would sound arrogant,” but
once they started getting bookings, he says, the name grew on him. With their combined musical CVs, Top-
DogSAhas every right to be a little arrogant.TopDog SA has been together for three
years now, originally performing as a tightbacking band for the likes of Emo and Louk-maan Adams, Lloyd Cele, Judith Sephumaand Danny K. But once they started backingJonathan Butler they decided to start work-ing on their own original material.“We realisedwehadanopportunity to per-
form anywhere in the world with the band,”Camillo says, adding: “His smooth South Af-rican sound kind of led us into a directionas well.”
Hard workersBetween working as the principal of the
CapeMusic Institute, Camillo is a sought aft-er accompanist for legends like JimmyDlud-lu. Don Vino rates his work on Kirk Wha-lum’s album Gospel according to Jazz Chap-ter 4 as one of the highlights of his career.Drumming lecturer by day, Mornay has
similarly workedwith big local and interna-tional names, ranging fromJudith Sephumato Chevelle Franklin. With more than 16 in-ternational tours under his belt, Mark’sskills have seen him play in 14 differentcountries. Charlton was chosen as a mentor
alongside big names like Frank Paco for lastyear’s Artscape Youth Jazz Festival. The band has been hard at work on their
debut album at Fish Hoek’s Paris Studios.Griqua DNA will be out in time for the jazzfestival.Mornay describes it as a “mostly in-strumental fusion album” with elements ofgenres from ghoema to funk and even a littlegospel.Their completely independent album also
features performances by Jonathan Butlerand Marrion Meadows. When they aren’t on stage, the members
are all involved in youth developmentthrough various musical training projects.“We have to pass on the baton to the next
generation and provide them with skills,”Mornay says. “We’ve got to impart what weknow and what helped us in the industry.”“We’d like to see a better future for the up-
coming musicians,” Camillo adds. “We hadour fair share of challenges and it’s up to usto rectify those mistakes by imparting thecorrect knowledge.”Charlton points out that there aremiscon-
ceptions of what themusic industry is aboutandmany say: “You’ll nevermake it as amu-sician.”“We’rehere to givebackandprove to them
that what they are saying isn’t true: thereare possibilities.”
This weekTopDog will be doing just that when they
play on the Basil Manenberg Coetzee stageat theCapeTown International JazzFestivalthis weekend. They will also be performing at the festi-
val’s free concert at Greenmarket Square onWednesday.Camillo works on the festival every year,
but says this year is extra special because, instead of backing another artist, the bandwill be playing their own original material. The festival is also a platformwhere inter-
national artists and promotors can see andhear the band, possibly leading to bookingsfor other festivals.“Also, it’s an honour and a privilege to
play in front of a home crowd; our own peo-ple,” Mornay says.V For more information about TopDog SA, their showsand upcoming album, visit their Facebook page. Formore information about this weekend’s Cape Town In-ternational Jazz Festival, visit www.capetownjazz-fest.com.

City officers let barking dogs lie?DESIREE RORKE
@dezzierorke
Although the animal bylaw in respect ofbarking dogs is frowned upon by many
residents as nonsensical, the City of CapeTown is adamant that this bylaw can and isstill enforced in a very practical sense.People’s Post regularly receives com-
plaints from readers about their rowdyneig-bourhood dogs, coupled with the City’s ina-bility to enforce the bylaw. In most cases it so happens that the nui-
sance dog, after being reported to Law En-forcement, will be considerably quieterwhen City officers arrive on the premises,
making it impossible for them to take lawfulaction against the dog owner. The case issubsequently closed, until another isopened. In terms of the bylaw no dog is allowed to
bark for more than three minutes in half anhour or for more than six minutes in anhour. But how do you prove this?As is the case in any other legal matter,
sufficient evidence is needed to prosecute inthe municipal courts. In this instance, a complete “barkingmon-
itoring schedule”, as well as audio-visualmaterial, would be needed, according to JPSmith, Mayco member of safety and securi-
ty.Smith says just because many of the com-
plaints reported cannot be corroborated bythe investigating officers who have to moni-tor the dogs at the identified locations, itdoes notmean the bylaw is not being contra-vened.“Obviously the officers cannot monitor
the location on a 24-hour basis,” he says.“Enforcement action will therefore in-
volve an initial compliance notice directingthe dog owner to remedy the situation. In theevent of non-compliance this will be fol-lowed, in most cases, by the compilation ofa docket containing the complainant’s affi-davit, which includes a barking monitoring
schedule and whatever audio-visual evi-dence is available, so that the dog owner canbe summoned to court on the prosecutor’sinstruction,” he says. However, he doesn’t clarify how this
would be done in the absence of officers toconstantly monitor the premises.According to a source, the lackofmanpow-
er in LawEnforcement in actual fact doesn’tafford officers the time needed for compilingdockets. In extreme cases, says this source, an ad-
mission of guilt fine would be issued to a re-peat “offender”, who would then pay it andbe on his way, often leaving the cause of theproblem unresolved.

Ajax Cape Town and Super-Sport United went through tothe final of the Metropolitan
u.19 Premier Cup on a day of highdrama at Erica Park in Belhar onSunday. The grand final was stillin progress at the time of going toprint. The young urban warriors beat
Ikapa Sporting 3-0 in a tensematchthat remained in the balance untilthe final stage. Masilake Phohlon-go gaveAjax the lead after only two
minutes with a well-taken finish.Ikapa received a boost midway inthe second half when defender Jay-Dee Adams was sent off for a sec-ond bookable offence. However, the red card only served to galva-nise Ajax, whose ten men madesure of victory with two goals bySonwabile Mfecane and CourtneyWilliams in the last five minutes.Simon Nqoi scored the only goal
in the other semi final, as Matsat-santsa held off a spirited challenge
by Bidvest Wits to set up a mouth-watering final.Ajax qualified for the semi final
after coming from behind to beatHellenic 2-1. Leo Thetani’s equalis-er cancelled out JasonBritz’s open-er before Phohlongo netted thewinner in the second half.Adeeb Khan scored twice and
Luke le Roux added a third as Ik-apa booked their place in the lastfour, courtesy of a 3-1 victory overAtlantic Nacional. Atlantic’s goal
came from Julio Bianchi.SuperSport made light of falling
behind to a first-minute strike bySwansea City’s Mael Davies to fin-ish as 4-2 winners. Fagrie Lakayscored a brace and Nelson Malu-leke andZamaRamabuwaneaddedfurther goals, while Jordan Gar-rick grabbed a late consolation forthe Welsh outfit.BidvestWits squeezed pastMila-
no United 3-2 on penalties, after ahard-fought encounter that endedgoalless after extra time.“Congratulations to the teams
that have made it through to the fi-nal. They have proven themselves
to be the strongest sides in the tour-nament and thoroughly deserve tobe there. We anticipate a closelycontested championship match,”said Llewellyn Allen, head ofbrand and corporate affairs ofMet-ropolitan Life, before yesterday’sfinal.“We are heartened by the deter-
mination and commitment dis-played by each and every playerthroughout the event. This tourna-ment is an important step in the de-velopment process and reveals anearly glimpse of the next genera-tion of Bafana Bafana stars,” headded.

“And then I said to myself: ‘Maybe to-day is the day.’”This is how Zimbabwean Mike
Fokoroni describes his 03:13:33 victory inthe OldMutual Two Oceans UltraMarathon(Omtom) on Saturday.Fokoroni raced to a comfortable finish,
outpacing and ultimately beating fellowcountryman and Nedbank athlete CollenMakaza (3:14:45) and last year’s champ Mot-lokoa Nkhabutlane (3:16:22) to the finishline.“The weather was so great! The pace was
slow in the beginning and I was just holdingback until half way,” Fokoroni added at thefinish line.“I just hung onto the stronger guys. At
45km I got confident and I saw the victorycould be mine if I tried, and that’s when Istarted to push.”Meanwhile, Caroline Wöstmann contin-
ued her path of marathon domination, suc-cessfully defending her 56km Omtom title.Wöstmann, whohadbeen clear at the start
that she intended to run at a slower pace, maintained a comfortable distance from
race leader Tanith Maxwell. She took thelead in the final kilometres of the race – ina similar fashion to her surprise win lastyear – and broke the finish ribbon in a timeof 03:44:44.“It was a great training session with a
strong end result,” Wöstmann said of herwin.Fokoroni’s finish was the slowest in 22
years, while Wöstmann’s finish was alsoconsiderably slower than previous ultrawins. Wöstmann noted that the absence oftheRussianathletes (still banned frominter-national participation) eased the pressuresomewhat and contributed to a slower raceoverall. In thehalfmarathonmen’s race,Namakoe
Nkhasi sprinted to the finish in a time of01:03:38, beating Olympic hopeful Elroy Ge-lant by two seconds and narrowly missingthe course record. David Manja finished inthird place (1:03:45).Nkhasi attributed the weather conditions
to his end result, adding: “I stayed focusedand used the opportunities given to me inthe race to get in the lead.”
In the women’s race, Irvette van Zylclinched the half marathon title in a time of01:13:14. Fellow Nedbank runner OnneileDintwe from Botswana reached the finishline fourminutes later, while Namibian Ali-na Armas came third (01:18:05).
“This was a very special and importantrace for me,” said Van Zyl, who kept her eyeon the prize throughout the race. “I came towin, but maintaining that pace on my ownin the front was tough.”
Record-settingSouthAfrican-bornColleendeReuck trav-
elled from the United States to make her ul-tra marathon debut in the Omtom. She fin-ished fifth, much to the delight of the cheer-ing crowd at the finish line.
De Reuck’s finish time of 3:53:07 alsosmashed the 50 to 60 year age group recordby over 20 minutes.
In addition, she has recorded a new worldrecord for her age group by reaching the50km mark in 3:27:28. The previous 50kmrecord in the 50 to 54 age category was3:41:57, set in 1994.
According to race doctor Adrian Rotunno, the cool and overcast weather, coupled withspots of light rain, made fornear perfect raceconditions.
“Some of themost commonmedical issuesincluded mild to severe gastro, nausea andvomiting. Another common issue was exer-cise-associated postural hypotension, withdizziness and several episodes of collapseafter the finish line. Luckily the team wasthere to catch the runners, and simple treat-mentwith lower limbelevationdid the trick. The physios were kept very busy, treatingmuscle cramps. ‘Locked legs’ were the order
of the day. Finally, slippery conditions wereresponsible for mild abrasions.“Fortunately, there were no major medi-
cal incidents or trauma-related events dur-ing the race.”Title sponsor Old Mutual’s R1m prize bo-
nus to the male and female runner breakingthe ultra marathon records remains safe, asthe 1988 and 1989 records established byThompson Magawana (03:03:44) and Frithvan der Merwe (03:30:36) respectively con-tinue to stand.
