This news should come as a relief to the dozens of patients who were forced to spend hours queuing at facilities like the Hanover Park Community Health Centre in recent weeks. The delay was caused when a new service provider responsible for the de- livery of medicine parcels to public health facilities experienced initial problems as an improved dispensing system was introduced. Patients were forced to queue for hours at government health facilities in recent weeks after the data transfer of 200 000 patient files to the new contrac- tor, UTi Pharma, caused the delay. New business processes and the use of new equipment also impacted on the delivery service. The department and the service pro- vider have been dispensing medicines manually while the systems were acti- vated. However, a government spokesper- son reports that the delivery of pre- packed prescriptions has now been re- sumed at many facilities. The service provider is required to package and deliver approximately 175 000 patient parcels a month to 118 health facilities, most of which are in the Metropole. But this news seemingly failed to fil- ter down to those who regularly visit the Hanover Park Health Centre, causing frustrated patients to raise their ire at spending most of their day waiting for their supply of pills. When People’s Post visited the gov- ernment facility last week, frustrated lo- cals were unaware of the cause of the hold-up. It was midday and a group of people were sitting outside, waiting their turn. Inside, the columns of benches in the waiting room were practically all occu- pied and patients looked exhausted. Taahirah Bailey, who had been wait- ing for several hours, was clearly unim- pressed. “The process never takes this long and I don’t see what the problem is. They usually just check our docu- ments, give us our medication, and we can leave,” she says. Another local, who asks not to be named, says she usually collects her mediation within an hour. “But today is a different story. I’m tired and this place is hot,” she grumbled. A security guard said the queue is ac- tually shorter than it was the previous day, when the line snaked all the way to the facility’s parking lot. Many pa- tients were apparently sent home and told to return the next day. Provincial health minister Theuns Botha issued an apology to the govern- ment patients for the disruption and in- convenience caused. He says that the Western Cape is “pushing new boundaries” in terms of medicine dispensing and in the long term the new system will alleviate long queues and bring about an improved service. “The new contract with UTi out- lined expansion to new outlets and posed new challenges for the provider. What we are now experiencing are teething problems, but they are in the process of being resolved.” The service was expected to resume as of Thursday, but the chairperson of the Hanover Park Health Forum, Elizabeth Bantam, says that before the introduction of the new service provider, the system at the health centre was “much more compe- tent”. “I don’t think the problem with the medication has been eradicated as yet. Before, patients who came in to fetch their medication could just walk in with their card and collect their pills. People enjoyed coming and going quickly, but now it’s a hassle. “I’m also a patient at the day hospital. I had to wait for two days and my medi- cation still wasn’t ready. The problem should be managed so that people get their medication on time,” Bantam says. Those experiencing difficulty in col- lecting their medication can phone the helpline on 083 472 9300, where a pharmacist can help by guiding pa- tients to the nearest 24-hour facility where prescriptions can be obtained. ACHMAT EBRAHIMCITY MANAGER

Dear reader,

Excelling in the sales arena in today’s highlychallenging economic times, is a tall order. A dou-ble-dip recession has seen many businesses foldand crippled others to within a whisker of extinc-tion.

Millions of over-indebted South Africans havehad to place themselves under debt review. Giventhis context, People’s Post is very proud of ouradvertising representatives Sheryl Haupt andMichelle Poggenpoel, who on Friday scoopedawards (see page 3) for salessuccess at the WP Newspa-pers Representative of theYear ceremony. Retaining cli-ents versus established com-petition can only be as a resultof delivering consistent qualityservice; applying innovativesales strategy.

On the topic of business, Iattended Islamic Relief SouthAfrica’s inaugural businessbreakfast last week and washeartened by the strong entre-preneurial spirit that exists inour communities. I was in-spired by the determinationand honesty with which smallbusinessmen and womenkeep going; not dependent onformal employment, and at the fountain of talent.

I had a taste of entrepreneurship during myfreelance and self-employed years between jour-nalism. I sold everything; from clothing and foodto loo paper and a transport service. I know howdifficult it is to bring home a few rands, let alonehundreds and thousands.

One of my clients, who had not paid several ofhis suppliers, eventually had to face the music forhis unethical dealings. I was one of a few whomhe had owed zero, because I stood up to him anddemanded cash every time my vehicle transport-ed his supplies.

You have to be tough in business, especiallywhen you’re self-employed and have no protec-tion other than your instinct. You bag the profits;so too the risk. You cannot undersell yourself; fac-tor in your labour, time, petrol costs, electricity,

phone bill and every other running expense, be-fore setting a price that’s too low. It must be worthyour while; you’re in it for the money!

On a lighter note, I’ve started running. After 17years, I’ve overcome my fear of running, allthanks to the Lion of Africa/Itheko Sport AthleticClub’s head coach Farouk Meyer.

Coach extraordinaire, Farouk took me, my col-league Edwin Scott and about a dozen other nov-ice runners on the road and up the hill last week, literally.

None of us would have believed at the outsetof our run that we could completea 5km run complete with a steephill. I made some friends along theway. Like me, some of the otherwomen were anxious about run-ning. I had images of collapsingalong the road and having to beembarrassingly carried back tobase camp.

I’ve always been a runner, untilI was told by the coach of a walk/run programme that I’m a walker. And that’s what I believed, but nolonger.

It’s early days yet, but my chal-lenge is clear: train for the next sixweeks to complete a 10km run inthe Jive Slave Route Challenge on27 May. The club caters for begin-ners to elite runners and trains

twice a week at Rhodes High School in Mowbray, meeting at 18:00 on Tuesday or Thursdays.

I’m bracing myself for my next run tomorrow.Wish me luck.

Till next time, go well!. ConnectED is a weekly column by People’s

Post Editor Feroza Miller-Isaacs, who can be con-tacted on [email protected].

MOST trolley pushers are criminals.

That is according to the chairpersonof the Provincial Community PolicingForum, Hanif Loonat.

And, says Loonat, trolleys are morelikely used to cart off stolen goods.

At the beginning of March, OperationTrolley was started by a private securi-ty firm to weed out trolley operators inRondebosch East.

Since the inception of the operation,151 trolleys were confiscated in a month.

The spokesperson for Lansdowne police, Con-stable Nkululeko Mnyaka, says that outside of thesupermarket trolleys are used to transport stolenitems.

“This is a problem which has been ongoing forquite some time. We have spoken to managersat the supermarkets to have better control overtheir trolleys. We appeal to residents to call uponus when seeing people in the neighbourhoodpushing trolleys,” he says.

If police patrolling the area spots a trolley push-er, the trolley will be searched and confiscated.

Loonat says, “If anyone sees someone pushinga trolley or wheelie bin outside of a property, youare urged to contact the police immediately. It isvery likely that that person is transporting stolenitems.”

Loonat adds that trolley pushers also storescrap metal pieces inside the trolleys, knock ondoors and scope out people’s properties for op-portunistic crimes.

“The police, Metro and the community need to

take action. People who give these trolley pushersscrap metal from their yards, are adding to theproblem. Residents have a freedom of choice, Ican’t stop that, but do it collectively. There is noneed for them to be lurking around in the commu-nity,” he continues.

Representatives of the security company havebeen in contact with major chain stores to discussthe negative impact trolleys have in the communi-ties.

Meetings will be held with the stores to discussa plan of action.

A GROUP of talented youngsters have cho-sen to master musical instruments insteadof weapons.

Last Tuesday the Mayfair Ferns Brass Band, made up of youth from Hanover Park and Mitch-ell’s Plain, performed at the Ottery BaptistChurch and despite a poor turnout, they gavethose who came to hear a show to remember.

Shaafiq Martin, the group’s coordinator andspokesperson, explains that the band startedwith only ten members seven years ago but cur-rently consists of 30 youngsters.

“Our mission is to take children from thestreet and empower them through music. Wewere the first brass band to play at the New-lands Cricket Ground a few years back and wedid well. I know we definitely have what it takes,”says Martin.

Former police caption Keith Blake invited thegroup to showcase their talent at the localchurch and, despite being greatly disappointedat the turnout, the group clearly made an im-pression on him.

“I met some of the band members last yearduring the festive season and I was very im-pressed that they bonded through music in-stead of gangs. I saw an opportunity to exposethem to people who could help them performprofessionally and by doing, create employ-ment,” he says.

In a bid to give government officials the op-portunity to experience the talent the group hasto offer, Blake extended an invitation to variousofficials – and none responded to his request.

The disappointed Ottery resident says hehad hoped that government would find ways todevelop youngsters who clearly had talent whilegiving them encouragement and advice.

Despite the group’s eagerness to to perform, only six were able to participate as the band hasonly six instruments: three trumpets, two trom-bones and a drum.

Martin appeals to anyone with instruments

which are not being used to consider donatingit to the band.

He emphasises that the plea is not for moneybut for the tools which can help these novicemusicians perform to their full potential.

“In my experience, kids will stay with a bandthat is able to clothe them because uniforms arevery expensive. So we appeal to anyone whois able to sponsor tracksuits or material to makethem, to please do so,” says Martin.

Blake has also issued an appeal to retired orworking music teachers to volunteer their ex-pertise to the eager youth. He encouragesmembers of police and military bands to helpthe youngsters become masters in the art ofbrass band playing.

Both Blake and Martin are optimistic that withsome help the band will take flight.

“Our aim is to see the youth from the CapeFlats compete in a Battle of the Bands. Wewould also like to see these youngsters earningan income by playing at formal and informalfunctions, at shopping centres, fundraisers andsocial events. This project can have a positiveeffect on the younger generation,” an optimisticBlake says.

CRY FOR HELP: The Ferns Brass Band is in dire need of both financial and moral support.Kneeling in the front are band co-ordinator Shafiek Martin, band president Igshaam Arendseand chairman Frank Brandt. Appealing for support with outstretched arms is Keith Blake.

EXUDING thestrengths of a greatwife, mother and wom-an serving the com-munity, 52-year-old

Maria FatimaSanches, aimed to getthe best out of people. Now her voice is silent.

Leaving behind alegacy of being a sup-port system to all whoknew her, Sanchespassed away after asudden heart attackwhile visiting her fami-ly in Mafikeng on Sun-day 1 April.

She worked as asecretary for Civic As-sociation of Ronde-bosch East (Care) forsix months. She has been active in the organisa-tion from 1997 to 2001.

Sanches’ funeral was held on Saturday 14 Aprilat St Faith’s Church in Plumstead.

For two hours, attendees were able to pay theirrespects while listening to African traditionalsongs by the choir of the Pastor Light Ministries.

To the background display of images of Sanch-es depicting her life, her husband Joe sharedmemories of them dating, raising five children to-gether and setting values for a lifestyle of highfaith.

The chairperson of Care, Christopher Lane, re-members Sanches for her loving heart, kind waysand willingness to help anyone in need. “Mariatouched thousands in her ministry while walkingthis planet. She was a warrior for Christ and afriend to everyone with so much to give – not onlyto the poor. She was a strong woman with openarms – fearless in the townships and meeting plac-es for the homeless. She understood situationsand would pray with passion,” he says.

CAPE TOWN could miss out on hostingany games during next year’s AfricanCup of Nations (Afcon) if the local gov-ernment cannot agree on several keyissues with the South African FootballAssociation and the Afcon Local Or-ganising Committee.

The 2013 tournament was originallymeant to be hosted in Libya, with SouthAfrica hosting the 2017 installment, butthe two nations swapped hosting rightslast year after that North African coun-try was beset by political unrest.

Cape Town was one of several majormunicipalities invited to bid to host thematches, and it seemed likely that theCity would be successful.

However, this has now been throwninto doubt after the City of Cape Townsought clarity from SAFA and the or-ganising committee on several press-ing issues, many of them financial.

According to Councillor Grant Pas-

coe, Mayoral Committee Member fortourism and marketing, these will needto be cleared up before the City willagree to host any games.

“The City of Cape Town has repeat-edly highlighted its concerns with SAFAabout certain contractual obligationsand the impact that the possible unde-fined costs could have on both CapeTown and other municipalities, espe-

cially in light of substantial service de-livery needs,” said Pascoe in a state-ment released last week.

“The City of Cape Town accepted theSouth African Football Association’s in-vitation to bid as a host city for the 2013African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tourna-ment.

This was seen to coincide with theCity’s strategic position of being a com-

petent and attractive tourism andevents destination. However, the costof hosting the Afcon games will haveto be carefully weighed against otherpressing socio-economic imperativescurrently facing the city.”

LIAM MOSES

THE Cape Town club rugby season kickedoff with a bang this weekend when Colle-gians RFC and Primrose RFC faced off ina frenetic, intense encounter at the Len-tegeur Sports Complex on Saturday.

The game has grown into somewhat of agrudge match in recent seasons and it wasclear that both sets of players were desperateto claim bragging rights until the next time theteams met.

Primrose gained the ascendancy in theopening stages of the first half as their power-ful pack of forwards kept the team rumblingtowards the opposition try line and created themomentum necessary for the back division toprofit.

The pacy Primrose back three were keptaway from the whitewash only by the commit-ted defence of their Collegians’ counterparts. But the host could not replicate the aptitudethey showed on defence during their attackingplay, and failure to protect their possession re-sulted in Collegians trailing 14-5 after 25 min-utes.

The home side were forced to dig deep andtheir efforts were rewarded in the 30th minutewhen a converted try saw them narrow thepoints deficit despite a poor display from theirgoal-kicker.

Collegians resumed their ascendancy in thesecond half and managed to pull away to a22-17 lead in the 75th minute after anotherconverted try.

However, the lead was short-lived and two

penalties from Primrose saw them come frombehind to snatch a 22-23 victory in the dyingminutes of the game.

Primrose coach Herman Mashimla said thathe was always expecting the result of thegame to be a narrow victory for either side.

“It’s always great to win here. There’s a lotof history in this kind of contest and we werenot expecting anything else,” said Mashimla.

“I wasn’t the coach last year, but I believelast year it also went the way of the penalty, lso we were not expecting less. It was a greatgame, and we were lucky to win.”

Five of the Collegians players who took tothe field on Saturday were in the U20 teamlast year, and according to coach Adiel Gallie, the loss is part of the learning curve for theyoungsters. Gallie believes that his side willimprove as the season progresses.

“These youngsters have proven today whathard work does, and it’s only the beginning forthis season,” says Galllie.

“We should take heart from what has hap-pened and learn from the mistakes we made.Everybody tried, and I think we are going togo places this year.”

Gallie added that he would work on histeam’s handling and goal-kicking before theirnext match.

Primrose will play Brackenfell at home intheir next game this Saturday, while Colle-gians will travel to Goodwood.
