HEALTH: EQUIPMENT ‘OUTDATED’, CONDITIONS ‘PUTRID’
GF Jooste a ‘death trap’CARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
Outdated medical equipment is leadingto unnecessary deaths at GF JoosteHospital.
This is according to the medical staff whoare blasting the provincial health depart-ment for “neglecting” oneof the oldest hospi-tals in the province. The government facility was meant to be
closed for redevelopment last year.Staff and equipment would then bemoved
to a temporary emergency unit under con-struction in Heideveld. However, construction delays have led to
the demolition being put on hold. But staff saypatients are suffering the con-
sequences of the delay.A specialist, who spoke on condition of an-
onymity, says staff is forced to work withsub-standard apparatus as new equipmentwill only be supplied at the new facility.“The machinery and medical equipment
are outdated and patients are suffering,” heinsists.Nursing staff say a shortage of beds is com-
mon and patients are sometimes treated inpassages and on gurneys. When People’s Post visited the hospital's
emergency room, patients could be seen lin-ing the hallways. Many were left unattended.“This is howwework here,” says one frus-
trated nurse. “There are not enough bedsand there’s not enough space.“We are also understaffed and can’t deal
with the number of patients. People are dy-ing here because they can’t be treated prop-erly with what we have at our disposal,” hesays.Rezaan Bastra recently spent two days in
the emergency room and witnessed patientsdying while he waited to be treated.“It’s chaotic in there. You can see they are
understaffed and unable to deal with all thepatients and they don’t have the properequipment to dowhat they need to,” he says.FormerpatientRosalineStrydomsays she
had to be transferred to Groote Schuur be-cause GF Jooste could not take care of herproperly. “I had a bad fall and tore a liga-ment, but the doctor at Jooste toldme Imustbe transferred to another hospital becausethey can’t treat me,” she says.“It was a major inconvenience – not only
because my treatment was delayed, but alsobecause I live inManenberg andGroote Sch-uur is far to travel.”The health department now anticipates
thenew facilitywill be completedby 2018/19.Provincial health minister Theuns Botha
says reconstruction will start in the next fi-nancial year.
“We are aware that our staff and patientsaremaking sacrifices while we are awaitingthe reconstruction of GF Jooste. However, arrangements are in place to provide healthservices in the interim,” he says.GF Jooste currently provides no materni-
ty, gynaecological or paediatric services.“Once complete, the newhospital will pro-
vide a full range of hospital services,” Bothasays.“Patients requiring higher level specialist
and sub-specialist care will be referred toGroote Schuur Hospital and Red Cross Chil-dren’s Hospital,” he explains.Botha also counters that there is no prob-
lemwithmedical equipment at the hospital.“The equipment is fully functional and
will be moved to the interim facility and thenew hospital will be fitted with new equip-
ment,” he says.“The temporary Emergency Centre, with
30 overnight beds in construction at the Hei-develdCommunityHealthCentre,must firstbe completed before the last services canmove out.”Once this is complete, the hospital will be
closed and decommissioned.Klipfontein Sub District Health Forum
chairperson Isgaak Kamaar demands thatthe department “take responsibility for thelives lost due to poor service” at GF Jooste.“I know the staff know what they are do-
ing, but how can they work properly in suchputrid conditions? There should have beenadequate planning, but now people are dy-ing and it’s a sad state of affairs,” he insists.“The people have been short-changed and
the minister should be held accountable.”

Every 26 seconds someone is raped in thiscountry. But this statistic is inaccurateas many cases go unreported.
In SouthAfrica, as few as one in 13 peoplereport rape – mostly due to the harmfulmyths and stigmas which cling to thiscrime.
Rape Crisis has launched a new cam-paign, called Don’t Hide, Speak Out to helpsurvivors.
This month a series of portraits are to belaunched showing the faces of rape survi-vors and amotivational message alongsidetheir pictures to encourage others to speakout against this evil.
Making their voices heard are BusiswaNtsadu (38), Monique van Vuuren (27) andDave Luis (39); survivors who, through thecampaign, are speaking out against rapeand the persistent myths.
Ntsadu, amother of four, was raped threetimes. “The first incident happened whenI was six years old. I was raped by my step-brother. I did not want to tell my motherwhat happened because I wanted to keepthe peace at home; I was also threatened bymy stepbrother,” Ntsadu says.
She moved to Cape Town some years lat-er. Shortly after, she was raped again bystrangers.
After living with her secret for years, Nt-sadu started speaking about her experienc-es last year.
“I spoke to my mother about it becauseI decided enough is enough. My brotherraped my stepsister a few years ago and heis up for parole in a couple of months. Mymother did not believe my brother wasguilty or capable of what he had done tomystepsister. I had to sit her down and tell herwhat happened to me,” she says.
“That was the start of my healing proc-ess. Since the moment I decided to tell mymother I knew I had dealt withmypain andI am able to tell others.”
Her mother showed scant emotion. “I de-cided to move from her house before mybrother is released from prison,” she says.
“I do notwant her to be aroundher perpe-trator again. That can be quite daunting. Itwill also do me good because I do not wantto be reminded ofmy trauma and I’m afraidall those memories will have a negative ef-fect on me. My healing process has cometoo far for me to go back.”
She signed up to speak out and let othersurvivors know the rape is not their fault.“I wanted to be a part of this campaign totell other men and women they aren’t
alone. They need to speak out so they candealwith their painand tobring thoseperpe-trators to justice,” she says.
VanVuurenwrote a book to help facilitateher healing. “It was a therapeutic process.I wrote about my rape, but it was all just thehard facts about how it happened.”
The self-published book, titledSecrets: Thedark suffocating shadows – A memoir for lib-eration, was VanVuuren’s way of telling herstory and for others to share and foster a na-ture of speaking out. “Too many people, af-ter they have been raped or through any per-sonal trauma, feel they should keep the hurtto themselves. This bodes a huge injusticefor the individual,” she says. “People needto realise silence is a huge problem in socie-ty. My silence did not protect me, it protect-ed my perpetrator. Once you remain silent, you give the power to the perpetrator.”
Luis stepped up to the campaign to helperadicate the stigma of rape being a ‘women-only’ crime. His is the only male portrait inthe series. Raped at 21 by a partner and afriend, Luis is only now coming to termswith his experience. “Being a part of thiscampaign is part of my healing journey. Ihave been writing a very public blog aboutmy recovery from addiction that was in avery big way fuelled by my rape,” he says.
Luis says, in sharing his recovery fromdrug addiction, it became very necessary forhim to also unpack the issue of his rape ina blog (http://bloggsymalone.word-press.com/). “My blog has a small reachcompared to the Rape Crisis campaign; theyhave a far larger audience. There is a power-ful story of healing, recovery and forgive-ness to be told to inspire more men to comeforward so theymay start their own process
of recovery. I want to disarm the anger Ifight internally and am also proud to say‘yes, I was raped, but I am not a victim’.”
Luis also for a very long time believed themyth that men do not get raped.
“For a long time I believedwhat happenedto me was an adult situation that wentwrong. Beyond the stigma of ‘rape only hap-pens to women’ there is also a secondarystigmawhich says rape is part of the gay life-style. Both of these are wildly inaccurate,”he contends.
As part of his healing process, Luis wroteto his ex-partner to confront him about therape. “I unpacked the events of that eveningto him and told him ‘what you did tome thatnight was rape’. After the confrontation Igave myself the most important gift of mylife: forgiveness. It was the onlyway to leavemy anger and sense of revenge behind.”
Luis encourages all rape victims to, first-ly, support themselves. “Find a mirror, lookyourself in the eye and say ‘I ama rape survi-vor’. There is no shame in being strongenough to say you were hurt and that youare healing. Stand up each day and work atforgiving yourself and slowly you will findyour way back to life.”
Sarah McLaughlin, communications co-ordinator at the Rape Crisis Cape TownTrust, says the campaign aims to showcasethe amazing strength of the survivors whotook part and to encourage others to speakout in whichever way they choose.
“Speakingout is incrediblydifficult. Somesurvivors never tell anyone what happenedand others only do so after many years. Wewould like to encourage survivors to speakout by reporting (it to thepolice), coming for-ward for counselling or even telling a familymember or loved one.”
McLaughlin says the concept for the cam-paign came about when Swiss photographerSandro Baebler heard about the crisis inSouth Africa and decided to offer his servic-es for free to the Trust.
“Together we developed the concept forthe images andwent about trying to find sur-vivors who would be willing to participate. To our surprise we received 14 responses, and a fewmore outside of the Cape Town ar-ea,” she says.
The portraits will be displayed until year-end. “Wewill be releasing four pictures (thismonth), another four in August close toWomen’s Day, and the rest over the 16 Daysof Activism of No Violence against WomenandChildren to tie inwithourotherplannedactivities.”
With Luis the sole male representative inthe series, McLaughlin says the Trust hopespeople will stop the silence and help spreadthe myth that only women are raped.
“WehopemenwhoseeDave’s portraitwilleither begin to think in a new way aboutrape and the fact that men are also exposed. Also, we hope his courage resonates withmale survivors and that they feel less aloneand more empowered to speak up and seeksupport,” she says.

LANSDOWNE: RESIDENTS VENT THEIR CONTEMPT FOR COUNCIL AND COPS AT PUBLIC MEETING
Enraged by police’s ‘failure’CARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
Thirty burglaries in 10 yearswith no convic-tions.This alarming fact is what has left
Lansdowne local Andrea Swartz fuming. And with crime levels in the area soaring,
Swartz is not the only aggravated resident. At a heated public meeting held last week
to discuss rising crime in the Lansdowneprecinct, the community made it clear theyhave lost all hope in the crime preventionservices their taxes pay for.Thedrug epidemic, petty crimeandprosti-
tution in the area has left many residentsseething and desperate for change.Joanne Road resident Swartz spoke pas-
sionately at the meeting held at theLansdowne Civic Centre last Wednesday.“What more do police expect us to do?”
Swartz asks.“Clearly, they are not doing enough, but
they expect us to do more.”In the hot seats at the meeting were May-
oralCommitteemember for Safety andSecu-rity JP Smith, Nyanga Cluster commanderGeneral Robbie Robberts, Lansdowne policestation commander Colonel Lavona Janu-arie, Community Policing Forum chairper-son Thetha Sithole and ward councillorAnthea Green.Smith got the ball rolling by telling resi-
dents he knows the situation is not pleasantand that the entire country is under siege.“We can assure you that our department
is doing everything we can and more tomake our city safer,” he said. However, Smith’s comments were met
with cries of contempt. One York Road resident, who did not want
to be named, says he has seen Lansdowne go“down the tubes” in the last 20 years.“Your blanket statements won’t cut it! We
all know when the crime started rising,” heseethed.
“It was when the informal settlement inFlamingo Crescent came about. We want tosee proper steps being taken to curb crimeand being told about a blanket policy is sim-ply not enough.”A Church Street resident said his home
was burgled about two months ago.“I went to the police station and made a
statement and was later sent an SMS withmy case number and the name of the inves-tigating officer,” he says.“Up until now I have not heard any feed-
back regarding the case.”General Robberts told those present he
will ensure that Lansdowne police officersstart making more of an effort to be moreeffective.
“If you have any problems with the policeplease contact me and I will ensure that anyissues are taking care of,” he said.“It is clear there are many problems with
crime here in Lansdowne and I want to en-courage the community to have more meet-ings, report crime and speak to the mediaabout your issues.”Sithole then encouraged residents to get
more involved in crime fighting.“Join the neighbourhood watch or start
your own one,” he said.“Everyone must take responsibility in
bringing crime down.”Lansdowne Road resident Shaheed Da-
wood then got angry and blasted Sithole.“That’s utter nonsense! What the heck do
we pay taxes for?” he fumed.“We are paying for a service both the City
and our government cannot deliver!”Dawood said police know that the Flamin-
go Crescent informal settlement is a hotspotfor crime and drugs.“Thepolice knowverywellwho thepeople
are selling drugs here in Lansdowne,” he in-sisted. “These drug dealers have been al-lowed to operate freely year after year andnothing gets done.”Many other residents also got up to talk
about their experiences of crime in the area. Those who spoke up mentioned burgla-
ries, robberies and witnessing daily drugdealing. One resident exposed a suspected drug
den she says is operating in Joanne Road.Smith went on to reassure the community
that council has provided certain areas withfree drug rehabilitation centres and arebusy with many drug awareness pro-grammes.General Robberts also asked for residents
to be brave and level charges against knownsuspects in the community.Green then ended the meeting, saying she
would arrange for more gatherings of thesame nature in future.

The wheels for the development of amini-city in Schaapkraal are inmotion.
Public participation on the draftscoping report of the proposed Oakland CityDevelopment will close on Tuesday 1 April. This round will allow the public to registeras affected parties.
Planned to be constructed on more than472ha of land owned by Rapicorp 122 andRapicorp 123, the application for environ-mental authorisation for the proposed devel-opment was lodged with the provincial De-partment of Environmental Affairs and De-velopment Planning in November 2012.
The mini-city will be constructed on 22neighbouring erven, currently zoned for ag-riculture, which borders Vanguard Drive, the Philippi Horticultural Area and a sec-tion of Strandfontein.
It is expected to be a mixed-use develop-ment, which will comprise business, retail, offices, industrial, residential, educationaland institutional, civic and community, res-idential, public open spaces, conservation, utility services, roads and services facilities.People’s Post previously reported that a to-
tal of 20 000 homes, varying in size, areplanned, as well as 41 factories, 26 hectaresfor “mixed use”, 31 hectares for businessuse, and 157 hectares for open space to pro-tect sensitive vegetation and wetland areas(“Mini-city vs farm”, 3 February 2009).
The draft scoping report is compiled byLouis de Villiers of deVilliers Brownlie As-sociates, the environment assessment prac-titioner. The report states the earmarkedland is predominantly vacant with some le-gal sand mining operations. Most of the
neighbouring properties are also vacant, with some mining, horticultural land-useand a mix of residential developments, itstates.
When De Villiers was contacted for com-ment, hedirectedPeople’sPost to the scopingreport on the company’s website.
According to the report, the developmentmay have “potential impacts” on heritageand the cultural landscape, especially withhorticultural area in close proximity, biodi-versity and the current freshwater systems.
The development may also see the con-struction of primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions, social housing, apart-ments, group housing and single residentialdwellings. It will also “fall into a proposedIntegrated Rapid Transit public transportroute”.
But the development, which doesn’t havea price tag as yet, will face opposition fromaffected parties.
The Strandfontein Ratepayers’ Associa-tion has already approached a UWC profes-sor to provide them with a “comprehensivereport” on how development will affect thearea. “We realise that the urban edge hasbeen moved and we can no longer object tothat, but we will be objecting to the develop-ment,” says association secretary EphraimStanfield. “This development will destroyvital farming land and permanently affectunderground water.”
After a victory against urbanisation of thehorticultural area in January, the Schaap-kraal Civic and Environmental Associationwill again oppose the Oakland City Develop-ment, secretary Nazeer Sonday says.
“At the time of the announcement againsttheMSP development, we said it was a smallvictory while the war rages on,” he says.
“Our land is under development pressure;when we stop one development, another isproposed. We want the authorities to cometo the party and commit to a long-termman-agement plan. We want them to sit downwith local organisations and decide whichland is available fordevelopment, andwhichmust remain for agriculture.”
Sonday says the association has been op-posed to the development since it was firstproposed in 2008. “We will announce our op-position plans during the course of theweek,” he adds.
Following the public participation proc-ess on the draft scoping report, the environ-ment assessment practitioner will considercomments and prepare the final scoping re-port, which will be made available to regis-tered interested and affected parties, saysDepartment of Environmental Affairs andDevelopment Planning spokespersonMush-feeqah Croeser. “The practitioner will thensubmit a final scoping report and plan ofstudy for the environmental impact reportto the department.”
The department then has 14 days to ac-knowledge receipt of the report and 30 daysafter acknowledgement to accept, reject or
request additional information, she adds. The City of Cape Town’s director of Plan-
ning and Building Development Manage-ment Cheryl Walters says the departmenthas received no formal application for landuse change. “Only the draft Basic Assess-ment Report was (submitted to) the City forcomment on (Tuesday) 18 February,” shesays. “Once the environmental authorisa-tion has been obtained, the applicant willneed to submit the necessary applicationsfor township establishment, rezoning andsubdivision, together with precinct plansand phasing of development proposals.”
Walters adds an application to amend theapplicable structure plan to allow urban de-velopment instead of horticulture was sub-mitted to council and approved by the De-partment of Environmental Affairs and De-velopment Planning in May 2011.
“This approval does not give or take awayany rights of the owners. It merely changesthe policy position contained in the forwardplanning documents,” she says.
“The relevantCity departments have beenengagingwith the applicant’s planning teamin this pre-application process.”

Tough lessonfor pupilsCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
There is growing concern about twoHanoverPark schoolswhichno longeroffer core mathematics and physics as
subjects to pupils in Matric.Mountview High School and Crystal Sec-
ondary School were recently instructed bythe provincial education department tostop offering these subjects to students inGrade 11 and Grade 12.Principal at Crystal Secondary Dino Ab-
rahams says the matter is out of his hands.“It was a decision the department made
and I can’t say anything about it,” he says.“It’s a growing concern because there are
many schools who don’t offer core mathsand physics all over the country, not justhere in Hanover Park.”Abrahams says if there are students in-
terested in these subjects, they have to betransferred to other schools.Hanover Park resident and former civic
association chairperson Fagmie Abbasssays many families have been inconven-ienced due to the department’s decision.“I have hadmany complaints. The young-
ster who lives next door here had to betransferred to another school because hewanted todo coremaths and the school herecould not accommodate him,” he says.“I had to help them get him into a school
in another area, but now he has to traveland the fees are much higher too.”Abbass feels teachers and the department
should be doing more to encourage pupilsto do maths and physics. The student, Reza Samie, now attends
Windsor High School in Lansdowne.
“It took me a long time to adjust to thenew school,” he says. “I had to make newfriends and it was difficult, especially afterspending three years at Crystal.”Mountview principal Archie Benjamin
says it is unfortunate that the trend is grow-ing in poorer areas. “It’s not a good thingbut it’s also a reality that students can nowpursue careers without having maths andphysics as subjects,” he says. “In the pastthis was unheard of because you neededmaths to get a good job, but things arediffer-ent now.”Benjamin confirms that many students
have been transferred to other schools. “It’sa shame but it’s also a known fact that thereis a shortage of maths and physics teachersin the country,” Benjamin adds. The education department confirmed
this, revealing that 158 schools in the West-ern Cape require extra maths teachers, 154require extra maths literacy teachers and149 need more science teachers.Department spokesperson Paddy Attwell
says subject choices can affect students’ fu-ture career paths and tertiary studies.“Unfortunately, many learners enter
high school with a deficit and gaps in theirlearning, particularly in language, mathe-matics and science,” he says. “The depart-ment or the school do not coerce learnersto follow a certain subject, but we have a‘Tips for Success’ booklet which informspupils about making better subject choic-es.”Attwell says the department arranges ca-
reer expos and encourages pupils to takemathematics and physical science inGrade12. “We also focus on teacher developmentand support.”

We have recently been swamped with complaints from the public and some of our beneficiaries about companies that offer themfinancial service products under the pretext that they are working with, or are endorsed, by SASSA.

LANSDOWNE: RAT-RUNNING DRIVERS’ DAYS NUMBERED
Ticked off attaxi tyrantsCARLO PETERSEN
@carlo_petersen
Reckless taxi drivers speeding throughLansdowne are in for a bumpy ride.Taxis transporting passengers to
Wynberg and Claremont have been speed-ing through the quiet residential area in themornings and evenings to avoid peak traf-fic.Fed up residents are fuming that some
drivers have come close to knocking overchildren.Lansdowne Civic Association secretary
Ashraf Kenny says they received a slew ofcomplaints from angry property owners.“We discussed the problem and as a solu-
tion we have decided to request speedbumps from council,” he says.“They can’t go on speeding through the
area like this. They are endangering thelives of residents and schoolchildren.”The streets being considered for speed
bumps include York and Walnut roads.Ward councillor Anthea Green has con-firmed receiving the proposal.“I have since handed it to the municipali-
ty who will consider the application andmake a decision,” she says.Albert Road homeowner Lyle Thomas
says he recentlywitnessed a child narrowlyescape a gory death.“I saw some kids on their way to school
the other day and this taxi came speedingdown York Road and drove straight to-wards them without stopping,” he says.“The kids ran to cross the road but one
of the little girls fell and the taxi had tobrake hard to avoid hitting her.”
York Road resident Fatima Paulse saysresidents are close to taking the law intotheir own hands. “These taxi drivers haveno scruples! They just drive through herelike it’s the wild west. It’s uncouth and theyhave no respect for the people who livehere,” she vents.Michael Naidoo lives inWalnut Road and
says he was almost knocked over whilecrossing the road last week.“Iwas onmyway to the shop and this taxi
just swerved around the bend without stop-ping at the sign,” he fumes. “It’s highly un-acceptable and cannot go on. They muststick to their route and stay out of the resi-dential area.”A taxi driver, who spoke to People’s Post
on condition of anonymity, says takingshortcuts is the norm. “We do it because itshortens our route and we get to our desti-nations quicker,” he says.“Time is money and the more trips we
make, themoremoneywemake. We try anddrive safely through the areas.”Central Unity Taxi Association spokes-
person Zama Mkula says the MyCiTi roll-out is causing a panic.“Since the new buses started operating,
business has not been good so our driversare keen to make more trips,” he says.“They know they are not supposed to
drive through the areas but it’s difficult tocontrol.”CapeTownTraffic Services spokesperson
Maxine Jordaan says theywill be deployingmore officers to the area.“If minibus taxis are found driving
through the residential area, the conse-quences will be severe,” she warns.

Saints star shines in green and goldOne of Cape Town’s oldest cricket clubs cannow list a world champion among its mem-bership, after the junior Proteas’ victory inthe ICC under-19 World Cup.
All-rounder Jason Smith has been a mem-ber of the club since 2012, and played an inte-gral part in SA’s victory in Dubai.
Smith, who grew up a stone-throw awayfrom the club in Elfindale, labels the tourna-ment victory as his “greatest achievement”to date.
“The feeling was unreal. It felt amazing, because we were the first SA side to win anInternational Cricket Council (ICC) tourna-ment,” he says.
“I still can’t describe thewaywe felt.Whenthey hit the winning runs, we all juststormed onto the field – we were all standingoutside the change room and just stormedon.”
The baby Proteas beat Pakistan by sevenwickets in the final of the tournament onSat-
urday 1 March. The victory earned South Africa its inau-
gural ICC title at any level.Though Smith is the first world champion
at St Augustine’s, the club can also lay claimto two of SA’s most famous cricketers.Former Proteas spinner and current CapeCobras coach Paul Adams is a product of StAugustine’s,whileBasilD’Oliveirawhorep-resented England during apartheid was alsoa club member.
Chairperson Johnny Jacobs believesSmith can go on to emulate Adams and D’Ol-iveira.
“A lot of development still needs to happenfor him tomature into the cricketer he couldbe,” says Jacobs. “He has all the talent in theworld and I have no doubt he will go far incricket. It’s just about taking the opportuni-ties at the right time.”
Smith is determined to make a career ofthe sport, and spent three months playing in
Devonshire, England before he was selectedfor the SA under-19 side in January.
The 19-year-old may return to England atthe end of the local cricket season. “The con-ditions were very different to South Africa– some weeks we played on wet pitches andthe decks were a lot slower,” he says.
“You have to adapt when you bat; playingin England has assisted me with that.”
Smith scored seven centuries and sevenhalf-centuries during his time in England.
At present the youngster is completely fo-cused on helping St Augustine’s win theWestern Province Cricket Association 1BLeague. The club’s first team is currentlyunbeaten and at the summit of the table.
“Our sponsor, Jive, has a lot to dowith ourupward movement; they have sponsored usfor three (seasons),” Jacobs says.
“Jason has played a huge role in (theclub’s progress) and he has played most ofthe games.”

Western Province are feeling no extrapressure ahead of the Cricket SouthAfrica’s women’s 50-over provincial
final on Saturday.Province will claim their second consecu-
tive title if they defeat KwaZulu-Natal inDurban, but coach Cobus Roodt says thisdoesn’t have an impact on how they will ap-proach the match.
“We will just take it as another game. There is tremendous mental strength in theteam, in each player,” Roodt says.
“Cricket is 80% mental – that’s what I havebeen drilling into the team over the last twoseasons. We are normally good in knockoutsituations.”
Last season Roodt’s side beat Gauteng atthe Wanderers to secure the title, afterknocking out Northerns at Newlands theprevious week.
They tread a similar path this season, again knocking out Northerns in a homesemi-final on Saturday 8 March.
Province posted 147, with Leighshe Jacobs(33) and Yolani Fourie (28) making the onlynotable scores.
The bowling attack took up the challengeand skittled Northerns for 74 runs.
Moseline Daniels was the stand-out per-former, taking 4/9, with Shabnim Ismailsnatching 3/27.
“The pitch was a bit sticky when we battedin the morning and we battled to get going. At least we managed one good partnership,”says Roodt.
“The team showed lots of character whenwe went back out to defend that small total. When we examined the pitch, we expecteda total of around 180, so getting close to itwas good. We backed it up with the fieldingand bowling. The (fight the players put up)bodes well for the future and the nextmatch.”
Roodt will have eight of last year’s titlewinning squad available selection for the fi-nal, but will lose Daniels, Ismail and Shan-dre Fritz to the national squad.
He expects the team to still have enoughexperience and firepower to pull off a victo-ry. “Bowling will be difficult with the na-tional players absent, but we have good per-sonnel taking over from them,” he says.
“KZN are also losing three players – thethree (batsmen) who stood out for them
against Gauteng in their semi-final. I’m veryconfident we can do well this coming week-end. We know it’s the home straight and theteam with the most stamina will pullthrough.”
