This just doesn’t make sense.” He says he is furious that his wife had been- attacked by some Vygieskraal residents when they discovered the foetus. “My wife should not have been treated that way, I was upset when I heard the community attacked her. She is not to blame because she doesn’t have the money for the burial.” The woman’s aunt told the paper that they tried to get the people to stop, but there were too many. “They followed her, throwing stones at her and calling her a ‘murderer.’ The resi- dents did not know the real story, but they at- tacked her. “She asked me for money for the burial, but I too did not have. She was then looking for taxi fare, so she could go and ask other family.” The husband told the paper they got the money and the foetus was buried on Thursday last week. Faiza Steyn, spokesperson for the Provincial Health Department, says the doctors were not aware of the woman’s pregnancy. She also says that the woman only gave birth to only one foetus. “The woman had an incomplete miscarriage of a single foetus, estimated at 12 to 16 weeks’ gestation. There was only one foetus. No money to bury foetusREYANA STEYN

IMAGINE not having enough money tobury your dead baby and then havingto keep it in a fridge until you can raise

a measly R150.

This is what a poverty stricken woman inVygieskraal experienced after she had a mis-carriage.

The woman gave birth to twins at the GrooteSchuur Hospital on Thursday 20 October. Shetook one foetus home to bury according toMuslim tradition, but the penniless mothercould not afford the burial.

According to the parents, the hospital keptthe other foetus for testing, but the health de-partment says there was only one foetus.

The mother of five then placed the four-month-old foetus, which was wrapped in aplastic bag, into her family’s fridge in PearlCrescent.

Buy local and create jobs

The debt counsellingprocess unlocked

BUYING local products boostslocal businesses, which se-

cures existing jobs and stimulateseconomic growth, which in turncreates more quality employmentopportunities.

Proudly South African (PSA) urg-es South Africans to buy local thisChristmas.

PSA was launched in 2001 to boostjob creation by promoting South Af-rican companies and their home-grown products and services.

Leslie Sedibe, CEO of PSA, says:“Every single local product pur-chased affects a South African fami-ly somewhere.”

He explains that economics is allabout sentiment. “Weneed tobeposi-tive and patriotic about our country, our people, our products and servic-es to save and create jobs. This thentranslates into nation building.”

By buying PSA, consumers andbusinesses are making a personalcontribution to nation-building.Consumers get an assurance of qual-ity, because only quality productscarry the PSA mark, and an assur-ance that socially and environmen-tally responsible business practiceswent into production of the goods orservices.

“Let’s start with one locally pro-

duced gift pur-chase at a time.Change startswithyouandme.Be ProudlySouth African,BuyLocal toCre-ate Jobs.”

The qualifyingcriteria for PSAmembershipare:

. Local Con-tent (at least 50%of the cost of pro-duction must beincurred inSouth Africa andthere must be“substantialtransformation”of any imported materials)

. High Quality Product (the prod-uct or service must be of a provenhigh quality.)

. Fair Labour Practice (the com-pany must comply with labour legis-lation and adhere to fair labour prac-tices)

. Environmental Standards (thecompany must be environmentallyresponsible and adhere to produc-tion processes that are environmen-tally friendly and acceptable).

Membership of PSA is not restrict-

ed to a particular type of business ororganisation. Any company or insti-tution, whether it renders a profes-sional service or is a manufacturingbusiness, a public entity, sportsbody, school, tertiary institution, government department, municipal-ity, NGO, town or city can be a mem-ber. Even individuals are eligible tojoin the Proudly South Africa Cam-paign, provided that they support thecampaign’s overall aims and objec-tives and meet the membership cri-teria.

In this instalment of ourfortnightly legal advice col-umn, the focus is on debtcounselling

What is debt counselling?DEBT counselling is a proc-

ess to assist people who areoverwhelmed by debt and canno longer meet all their com-mitments. Debt counsellorsnegotiate and restructurecredit agreements to allow theconsumer to make regular con-tributing instalments. This is avoluntaryprocess, but canalsobe ordered by a magistrate.

When meeting with a debtcounsellor it is important to betotally honest about your situ-ation. This makes it easier forthe debt counsellor to make anaccurate assessment of yourneeds and abilities and to as-sist you.

Consumers tend to shy awayfrom administrators and debtcollectors, but the debt coun-sellor is there not only to servethe credit providers but con-sumers as well. Debt counsel-lors will make contact withyour credit providers as soonas you have volunteered your-self for debt counseling. Thesubmission process lasts 60working days, during which:

1. the debt counsellor makescontact with all your creditorsto request the balance certifi-cates;

2. an attorney is appointed torepresent you in court when

needed;3. the new instalments are

negotiated. This 60-day period is by no

means a payment holiday. Thecredit agreements you havemust still be serviced. Howev-er, the debt counsellor will ar-range with you to pay the mon-ey into a distribution account.

Once all creditors haveagreed to the terms, and your60 days are over, you are con-sidered to be under debt re-view until all your creditagreements have been settled.Your debt counsellor must beissued with clearance certifi-cates for each of your creditagreements.

While you are under debt re-view you will be unable to en-ter into any new credit agree-ments. Once your debt coun-sellor issues you with aclearance certificate, it takesabout 5 to 10 working days foryour status to be changed withthe credit bureaus.

Who should apply for debt re-view?

If you can not meet yourmonthly instalments, or if youare receiving default noticesfrom your creditors, then thisprocess could assist you.

A HEIDEVELD man was arrested andcharged with perjury after he opened a falsecase at the Manenberg police station.

The 44-year-old man claimed he was heldat gunpoint and robbed of cash, a firearmand his jewellery when his car broke downin Heideveld.

But as the investigation unfolded, policerealised that the man had lied.

“On Friday at 04:45, the man came intothe police station alleging that he had beenheld at gunpoint and robbed of his .38 Rossispecial with five live rounds, R5 000 cashand jewellery,” says Lieutenant Ian Ben-nett, Manenberg police spokesperson.

“The complainant alleged that he waspicking up people when his vehicle brokedown, in Waaihoek Road. Detective Consta-

Bennett says after thorough question-ing, the complainant broke down and con-fessed that he was not telling the truth andthat he had not been robbed.

The man was arrested and charged.Bennett says “If any person is found

making a case or statements under oath, which is a fabricated story, police will nothesitate to arrest the complainant and opena counter charge such as perjury or defeat-ing the ends of justice.”

He added that Manenberg police have agroup of dedicated detectives that will“leave no stone unturned to solve a case andreduce crime within the area.”

Design destinyTHE MOTHER CITY has been awarded thetitle of the world’s Design Capital for 2014.Perhaps fittingly so, as this will be the yearwe celebrate two decades of democracy.

The win confirms that our beloved“Slaapstad” is boldly taking the globalstage, to become a major world player anddrawcard in the potentially lucrative tour-ism industry.

In 1994 tourism’s contribution to SA’seconomy was reported as no more than 2%of Gross Domestic Product.

However, with awards such as this andothers filling up our trophy cabinet, tour-ism is fast becoming one of the top earnersof foreign currency.

In the midst of a global recession, wehave something to brighten our spirits: thepromise of greater investment and, wehope, a better life for all.

These awards translate into tangiblebenefits for everyone.

Every small business that stays open fora little while longer, means that the cash-ier, the cleaner, the janitor have jobs for alittle longer, and able to support their fami-lies: a little foreign spend goes a long way.

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille hascommitted herself to work harder to use de-signas a tool to clean the remnants of apart-heid and bring communities togetheracross the “geographical divide” throughimproved, innovative design.

The award means that future genera-tions of Capetonians will grow up in a cityvery different to what most of us haveknown. They will benefit from maximumexposure to other cultures as more flock toour shores. As the winds of change contin-ue to sweep through, Cape Town is fast be-coming a city of the world.

Hold on to your hats! Today it is good tobe Capetonian.

. To all those moaning about barking dogs:The average dog is a better person than theaverage person. Why is nobody complainingabout spoiled kids screaming and crying inshops? Animal lover

Putting the sense in census. If the census is all about statistics and not

an invasion of privacy, why did they need toknow my name and the name of my business?

. To all census field workers: I know whatyou are going through as my daughter is alsoa field worker. I just hope that you all receiveyour salaries on time as stipulated in yourcontracts. Keep us posted.

Tuckshop prices. Anon, leave the tuckshops alone! Whole-

salers are also expensive and petrol is goingup. The rent must be paid. If you have anotherbusiness on the side, like collecting drug mon-ey, then you can sell your stuff cheaply!

. Anon must check her facts before makingaccusations. Every day I walk from OlympicCrescent to Owen Road because one of thecheapest tuckshops in the area is there. Andthe owners are very friendly.

. I agree with Anon, some of the tuckshopsare expensive, especially the shops on DurantRoad. I know things went up but think of thepensioners. From a housewife

. People who work from home need to con-sider their neighbours. Why should we haveto put up with the extra traffic and noise? Ifthis is what we wanted we would live in a busi-ness area and not a residential one.

Get writing!

What is this census all about?WITH reference to my first letter to Peo-ple’s Post on 11 October, comments by theChief Enumerator of

the 2011 Census this morning on SABCTV news cannot go unchallenged.

Not only did this census official repeatthe threat of imprisonment and fines, healso played, what could be considered, therace card. He said words to the effect thatquestions about the content of the censuswere mostly asked by rich people, imply-ing white people were rich versus theblack people who are not rich. That wasbad enough. But it got worse when he an-swered questions by the SABC TV pre-senters about questions like “Do you havea washing machine, a fridge, a TV...”

People wondered what this had to dowith establishing how many people livedin our country.

The gentleman’s answer was astonish-ing. He suggested that those questionsshould be asked of the marketing compa-nies, who needed that kind of informationfor their brands and promotional strate-gies. What? Is the census a means of mar-ket research? And if so, what has the gov-ernment got to do with this?

Worse, how can we be threatened withimprisonment if we do not disclose thecontents and amenities in our homes?

We would not present this informationonaplatter tohome-invaders, gangs, theftand break-in syndicates and con-artists.

Has Census 2011 gone totally of its rock-er? Cases of impostors have already beenreported, as well as census takers withoutidentification. The whole thing seems tobe bungling to the tenth degree.JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

WHILE demographers are unsure exactlywhen the world’s population will reach theseven billion mark – or whether this mighteven have already happened - the United

Nations Population Fund officially choseMonday this week to symbolically markthe day.

As a result, many parents have claimed

that their new-born baby is, indeed, the 7-billionth human on planet Earth. Sadly,no-one will ever know who finally tippedthe scale.

ANDRE BAKKES

DANA Winner is nostranger to being

adored.

The gorgeous and talent-ed Belgian singer has beena popular performer inSouth Africa for manyyears. She has also donethousands of interviews, soshe takes gawking journal-ists in her stride.

People’s Post spoke to hera few days before her recentshow with Patrizio Buanneat GrandWest Casino. Sad-ly, it was a telephonic inter-view. But, yes, it is possibleto gawk over the phone.

“I’ve been to South Africaabout 10 or 15 times. It’s al-ways very exciting to comehere,” says Winner.

“I always tell peoplewherever I go that South Af-rica has become my secondhome and it’s because of themany things you have inone country. This countryhas very warm and welcom-ing people and once you arein their hearts then you cannever leave.”

This last part is certainlytrue for the stuttering, star-struck person asking thequestions.

Winner bubbles on:“Cape Town has changedthrough the years. It’s nowa very colourful place, and

whenever we work thereit’s like being on holiday.”

Winner performed atGrandWest Casino before, but she has never shared astage with Patrizio.

When asked if it’s truethat he is a flirter of note, she exclaimed “I can hon-estly say that I don’t knowhim that well, but he’s anItalian; what do you expect? No, really, I only met him anhour ago and he’s a verynice person. I recorded myvocals in Belgium and himin South Africa. Technicalequipment nowadaysmakes it easy to combinethose things. I can honestlysay that it has become avery beautiful jewel.”

She emphasises the im-portance of voices going to-gether, which “creates a bitof magic” but this journalistis wrestling with an acutebout of Patrizio-jealousy.

A change of subject was inorder.

Does someone who hasperformed on stage thou-sands of times still get nerv-ous?

“Always! But I need it.When I used to play volley-ball, I played much betterwith nerves. It’s the samewith performing,” she says, probably with an adorableglint in her eyes.

Sometimes the stagelights blind her from the au-

dience, which she admits is“difficult”.

“It’s very nice when yousee the people and their re-actions. Otherwise it’s likesinging in a studio. But youfeel the audience. That’s al-so very exciting.”

Her favourite song is “Letthe children have a world”which she apparently al-ways delivers from the bot-tom of her heart.

“I’d like to sing it all overthe world. It’s a beautifulmessage and I think wehave to stay a little bit likea child. If we think like achild and feel like a childthen we know what the songis all about. Children will al-ways be our future.” Herdaughter is now 12 yearsold, and motherhood andstardom is a delicate jug-gling act.

“She has her own thing.Mom’s music is like... youknow. She loves dancing!”

Much like her daughter,Winner also likes to prac-tise inprivate and, yes, evenin the shower.

As for words of wisdom,Winner has plenty. “I al-ways say that one should al-ways dream. Sometimesthey do come true. If youworkhardenough, thenyoucan achieve anything, buttry to do it in a fair way.”

Thank you Dana! I willkeep on dreaming.

There can be only one Winner

Championship on your doorstepLYNN PRINS

THISseems tobe theyearofthe World Cups, starting

with the cricket and followedby rugby.

And now, in a mere 35 days, 16softball teams will arrive for theninth Junior Women’s WorldChampionship (JWWC).

I can proudly say we do unitewhen it comes to backing our SAteams.

It’s amazing how hosting the2010 Soccer World Cup has givenus a supportive attitude.

The success of that worldevent will be the talk of the townfor many years to come.

However, it is about morethan just support for the teams, but support for and belief in ourcountry’ ability to host a suc-cessful event.

Well, this major event de-serves nothing less and I’ll haveyou know that the softball teamSA is still hard at work. They’remaking the most of this shot atbeing the best they can be,whether at hosting or compet-ing.

Because I would like readersto share my love of this beautifulgame of softball, I would like togive the background and historyof the tournament and then in-

troduce the winning teams. The first International Soft-

ball Federation hosted the JW-WC in 1981 in Canada, exposingyoung talent to top competition, while introducing the game tomany.

Japan were crowned champsthat year, and China in ’85. TheUSA took the crown in ’87 andJapan took in back in ’91.

In ’95 the Americans took thetitle again, while Japan did soagain ’99 and ’03. In ’07 the titlereverted to the USA.

With that being said, the USA,Japan, China, and Australia allreceived medals in previousWorld Series. Australia is theonly team not to have taken goldyet. In 2007, in the Netherlands,South Africa participated forthe first time and finished 15th.

So now we all know who thetough contenders are and it’spossible that the teams men-tioned will see a final.

Perhaps the SA team will sur-prise us all and make the finals, who knows, even winning thetournament perhaps?

They have home ground ad-vantage after all.

With the SA team ranked 12ththey will need all our support.

The tournament takes placefromWednesday 7Decemberun-til Saturday 17 December at

Turfhall Stadium, in Crawford,Athlone. Participating teamsare Argentina ranked 7th, Aus-tralia ranked 3rd, USA ranked1st, Japan ranked 2nd, Canadaranked 4th, Puerto Rico ranked5th, Chinese Taipei ranked 6th,China ranked 8th, New Zealandranked 9th, Russia ranked 13th,Germany ranked 14th, SAranked 12th, Botswana ranked15th Brazil ranked 14th, Zimba-bwe ranked 15th and Czech Re-public ranked 16th.

Developing tomorrow’s starsLYNN PRINS

TWELVE years ago goalkeep-ing legend Farouk Abra-

hams had a burning passion tostart a goalkeeper’s academy.

His aim was to produce only greatgoalkeepers.

He feels the position is neglectedand, speaking as a former goalkeep-er himself, he thinks specialisedtraining is needed. However, thereis a lack of sponsorship.

“All we want to do is provide hopefor the future,” he said.

In 2002 Abrahams was appointedgoalkeeper coach forBafanaBafanaat the Soccer World Cup in Koreaand Japan, and worked with thelikes of Andre Arendse, Hans Vonk, and Calvin Marlin.

“It was my greatest honour to rep-resent my country, it didn’t matterthat I didn’t play on those levels, butthe fact that I was part of coachingWorld Cup goalkeepers, was a hugeachievement and money can cer-tainly not buy such glory,” he said.

When asked who he regards ashighly rated, he said: “ItumelengKhune is a highly rated player.

It’s just a pity that he had fakedan injury against Sierra Leone.

It just showed bad character.Nonetheless, he is good.”

He believes Moeneeb Josephs isalso a highly rated player.

Abrahams played for Cape TownSpurs, Maritzburg United, JomoCosmos, and Bush Bucks. Hecoached for Santos, Ajax CapeTown, and Hellenic.

Farouk Abrahams GoalkeeperAcademy (FAGA) has been spon-sored for eight years by Metropoli-tan, but since they merged with Mo-mentum, Abrahams is unsurewhether the sponsorship will con-tinue.

The academy coaches about 80-100 children, without any disap-pointments, from 7 to 25 years old.

The academy also teachess lifeskills.

“On many fronts, and it becameclear to us that the needs of theyoung people in the Academy ex-tend beyond merely that of acquir-ing goalkeeping skills.

Those living in disadvantagedcommunities are particularly vul-nerable, as they live in poverty andmust often survive harsh and diffi-cult experiences in their younglives,” he said.

“Many of the boys and girls at-tend the training sessions hungry, and lack simple life skills.”

FAGA is free and is based at thecorner of Wynberg Sports Club,Rosmead Avenue. Abrahams feels

that the 2010 World Cup legacy isnot benefitting academies such ashis. They still struggle with fundingand he appeals to corporates for

help with sponsorship for sustaina-bility.

“Danny Jordaan and I spoke overthe weekend, and I was told that in

the new year relevant World Cupfunds will be made available, butcriteria will apply and it will proba-bly be region-bound.
