AB History-3
OBJECTIVES
• At the end of this lesson, the student expected to:
• Discuss how Columbus changed the life of Americans;
• Analyze how the Americans adjusted their lives when Europeans came to their country .
INTRODUCTION
• It is one thing to come to a strange land as a daring individual, willing to risk one’s life for fame and fortune. It is quite another to have to make one’s living and raise a family.
• There were three main types of reasons: religious, political, and economic.
RELIGIOUS REASONS
• Both Spain and France felt they had a religious duty to convert the native Americans of the new world of Christianity, specifically to convert them to catholicism.
• Both countries spent large sums of money to send missionary priests to the new world and to help set up their missions. Only Catholic colonists were allowed to come to the New world and the desire to spread their religion was very strong among them.
• England had recently established its own state church, Christian but not Catholic. There were many religious dissenters in England and the New world offered England a chance to get rid of them to send them away to distant shores and prevent them from starting a religious war in England.
• These Colonists wanted to be free to practice their own religion, but they rarely offered religious freedom to others.
• In Massachusetts, for example, the Puritan Colonists ordered people who didn’t go to Church regularly to pay a fine. Any person who questioned the way religion was practiced in the Colony was banished.
EMPHASIS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY
• When Spaniard came here in the Philippines, they introduced the Catholic Church to the Filipinos.
• And many Filipinos are already converted from their previous religion.
• But the friars was used the religion for their own intentions.
• Some Filipinos are not already converted, because of their loyalty and dedication to their religious practices. Like the muslims.
• So the Spaniards do a way on how the muslims converted into a Catholic, but it is not a success, because of Christians and Muslims are enemies.
POLITICAL REASONS
• Political reasons have to do with government how nations are run and what their policies are. Spain, France, and England all wanted colonies to add to their power and standing in the eyes of their neighbors.
• Individual Spanish and French colonists, however, had a little political reason to come to the New World.
• The Colonies of Spain and France were closely controlled by mother countries, with the governors appointed by the kings, believed he was the king by “DIVINE RIGHT” the English colonists were given some self rule and many came for the chance to escape oppression at home.
• Most colonies could elect their own officers and make laws concerning the good of the colony.
• Many had representative government, that is, there was a group of men who debated on the proper laws and the policies of the colony.
EMPHASIS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY
• When Spanish came here in the Philippines, our type of government was changed and it is stick to one leader who appointed by the King of Spain.
• Governor-General whose the highest ruler here in the Philippines by the time of Spanish colony.
• Then also have their sub-ruler in each province, city, and barangay.
• Gobernadorcillo was the ruler of one province, Alkalde-Mayor for city, and Cabeza de Barangay for barangay.
• But the friars were also controlled our government. All the laws are came from them. Then followed by the government officials
• Guardia Civil, are the spanish soldiers and at the same time also police. But also abused the many Filipinos.
• You required to give a respect to each Guardia-civil every you saw where you are.
ECONOMIC REASONS• Economic reasons have to do with wealth, with
producing, distributing and consuming of goods and services.
• Spain’s main economic interest in her colonies was as an easy source of wealth. The administrators of her colonies were expected to organize the collection of treasure, stolen from the Native Americans or mined in the gold and silver mines. The Spanish made slaves of Native Americans and also used black African slaves in this work.
• Some Spanish colonists were given large tracts of land. But slave labor was used to farm the land and the individual Spanish colonist did not come to cultivate, but to get his share of the profits from exploiting the New World.
• In Canada, too French colonists were attracted by farming. The growing season was short, the land not always suitable and the farmers had to pay rent for the land, which was divided into large estates owned by noblemen.
• Instead the furtrade and fishing became the source of wealth in the New World for France.
• Fur and fur-trimmed clothing were popular in Europe, and the Fur trade brought a tremendous profit.
• Fur traders learned Native American languages and ways and in general tried to stay on friendly terms with the tribes. The Native Americans traded their furs for European goods, including guns.
EMPHASIS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY
• The Spaniard forced the Filipinos to labor. It is called Polo Y Servicious or Forced Labor. That when you reached at 16 is you required to be one of the laborers.
• You build a establishment, a Church, a bridge, and ships.
• Then you pay in a small amount.
• The farmers are also required to plant a rice on their fields and you have to required to give your percent to the government. Whether you like it or not.
• Then also you required to pay tax whether you like it or not. Then you give it to the Cabeza de Barangay.
CONCLUSION
• The life of the Americans and the Filipinos are almost the same under the European colonists. Because based on all the information. All of you have is to required to share to the government. And also have a forced labor, so whether you like it or not, you required to serve the government. And also the officials are also the same in the life of Americans and Filipinos.
