PENTECOST SUNDAY

ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God's promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birth-day of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Chris-tians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scrip-tures for Pentecost is the ac-count in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to under-stand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul's letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John's Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disci-ples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

O GOD, who by the mystery of today’s great feast sanctifies your whole Church in every people and nation, pour out, we pray, the gifts of the Holy Spirit across the face of the earth and, with the divine grace that was at work when the Gospel was first proclaimed, fill now once more the hearts of believers. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD HAS FILLED THE WHOLE WORLD AND THAT WHICH CONTAINS ALL THINGS UNDERSTANDS WHAT IS SAID, ALLELUIA. cf. WISDOM 1:7

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sun-down, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the cel-ebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an "eye" in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose pet-als fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the "birthday of the church."

James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

All of us have been baptized into one and the same Spirit (2a); let us live, then, by the Spirit (2b)! That same spirit, the Advocate, who “renews the face of the earth” (Ps) was given as gift to the disciples (1) to strengthen them to go forth in the name of the Lord (3b), and to obtain forgiveness of sins (3a).

FIRST READING — ACTS 2:1-11 Filled with the Holy Spirit,

the apostles begin to speak in tongues.

RESPONSORIAL — PSALM 104 Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

SECOND READING — 1 CORINTHIANS 12:3b-7, 12-13 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit.

GOSPEL — JOHN 20:19-23 As the Father has sent me, so I send you.

Receive the Holy Spirit.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD The disciples were cowering behind locked doors. Fear has a way of imprisoning, away from the outer world, but also from our inner world, taking away our freedom to hope, imagine, and dream. We can become comfortable working in

cramped spaces, isolated and unattached, removed from life and contact with others. But then along comes the risen Lord, arms outstretched, heart wide open, bearing gifts to transform our lives. The first gift of the risen Lord is peace (shalom), which translates as all good things, physically, mentally, and spiritually—all that is needed to be alive inside. This peace is a gift that the world cannot give. The second gift is a mission: we are sent, as Jesus was sent, by the Father. Where? To the world. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. In-deed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him" (John 3:16-17). Now the Son sends the disciples—us!—to bring life. The third gift is the Holy Spirit, given for the forgiveness of sins. The Holy Spirit is the gift of the Father and the Son, given to us at baptism, again at confirmation, and whose gifts are given to the church and its members for the good of all, within and outside the church. Primary among these gifts is the gift of forgiveness.

CEO SPRING FOOD DRIVE Social Justice Commission members will distrib-ute grocery bags after all Masses this weekend (MAY 19-20) for our parish COOPERATIVE EMERGENCY OUTREACH (CEO) SPRING FOOD DRIVE. The most needed items are on the list attached to each bag.

The CEO FOOD PANTRY needs to stock up in preparation for the summer months when school children are at home and requests for food in-crease dramatically. Donating food helps CEO

keep food costs down and allows for more of the monetary donations to be used for other assistance, such as utilities and rent.

You can help with a food donation or a check made out to CEO, P.O. Box 3631, Fayette-ville, AR 72702. Your monetary donation will be acknowledged as tax deductible. Also, you can visit our web page www.ceofayetteville.org and donate on line.

CEO offers emergency assistance to residents of Washington County, south of Springdale, with food, rent, utilities, gasoline, clothing and prescription vouchers, following certain rules and guidelines set up by the CEO Board of Directors. There are currently 23 member churches, as well as individuals and businesses, supporting CEO with both money and vol-unteers. It requires at least 10 volunteers to operate CEO each day. Located at 1649 E. Huntsville Rd., Fayetteville, CEO is open from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday and the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 am to noon (phone 479-444-7500).

St. Joseph Parish community has been very involved in the operation of CEO since its incep-tion 27 years ago. Our parish financial support for CEO is $2,000 per month. We provide numerous volunteers, a presence on the board (CEO Board President, Joe Dushan) and the food pantry coordinators (Ted and Sandi Villinski). We also provide the work of St. Joseph Middle School students in the food room monthly to bring in and sort food and rebag bulk rice, beans, pasta and cereal.

CEO is an all-volunteer ecumenical organization. There is no paid staff and all funds come from the member churches, businesses, individuals and groups. CEO does not receive any state or federal assistance.

To request information about volunteer opportunities at CEO, contact the Villinski’s at 443-0889 or [email protected] or Maxine LeBlanc at 521-4842 or [email protected].

Please return your CEO groceries to the Great Hall by SUNDAY, JUNE 3.

Thank you for your generous and continued support of CEO.
