EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

DON'T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they're having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery or chemotherapy. What's for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn't say, "Don't eat. Don't cook. Don't buy clothes." He says, "Don't worry." Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus re-minds us that "Your heavenly Father knows" all that you need (Matthew 6:32). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GRANT US, O LORD, we pray, that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your Church may rejoice, untroubled in her devotion. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

THE LORD BECAME MY PROTECTOR. HE BROUGHT ME OUT TO A PLACE OF FREEDOM; HE SAVED ME BECAUSE HE DE-

LIGHTED ME. PSALM 18:19-20

PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of the father of Sofia Vawter, José Mercedes Plácido Cabrera, who passed into eternal life on February 6, 2017.

Our heavenly Father is with us, ever providing for our needs (3). He is al-ways mindful of us (1); in him we shall never be disturbed (Ps). All should regard us as servants of Christ (2).

FIRST READING— Isaiah 49:14-15 God will never forget you.

PSALM—PSALM 62 Rest in God alone, my soul.

SECOND READING— 1 CORINTHIANS 4:1-5 Make no judgments; the Lord will judge.

GOSPEL— MATTHEW 6:24-34 God feeds the bird and clothes the flowers.

Do not be anxious; God knows all your needs.

You need more than water for a bath. Most family bathrooms contain an arsenal of soaps and emollients, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners to combat grime and honor the body. A bath without oil is still unthinkable. No wonder early Christians used lavish amounts of oil to "paint" the skin of people drawn dripping wet from the baptismal font on Easter. There were two oils used in baptism long ago. "Oil of exorcism" protected candidates from "evil spirits"; it strengthened their resolve and purified their purposes. The second oil, slathered over them after baptism's bath, "sealed" them, making them like Christ, the anointed one, the priest, the prophet, the king. Chrism has always had a powerful odor; rich resinous perfumes are stirred in before it is consecrated. As the newly baptized were embraced by new brothers and sisters in Christ, the scent permeated the hall of Eucharist, a sign of our connection to Christ and to one another. Rev. James Field , Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

JOB OPENING-MUSIC DIRECTOR St. Joseph Catholic Church seeks a music director and or-ganist, starting in May with Linda Kelly's retirement. Responsi-bilities include directing choirs on Saturday evening and Sun-day 9:00 a.m. and playing the organ, as well as overall lead-ership of the parish's music ministries. For more information or to apply, please contact Father Tyler at [email protected].

PARISH MEETINGS & EVENTS THE LEGION OF MARY meets every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Room 229 except for the second Thursday when they meet in the Library.

MARY’S WAY OF THE CROSS A beautiful tradition continues during our season of Lent. On all of the Fridays of Lent, we will have the Stations of the Cross at 5:30 p.m. The March 10 service will use the prayers called “Mary’s Way of the Cross.” Father Tyler asks that these prayers be said by the women of the parish. Since

there are 14 stations plus a closing, we can have up to 15 different women, of all ages, reading at this services.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to meditate on the suf-ferings of Christ by walking along with Mary as she followed Jesus! We all know that when tragedy strikes our lives that our women friends are the ones who are there for us. We should be there with Mary as she follows her son on His way to His crucifixion.

We welcome volunteers to read one of these prayers. It would be great for all women from 9 to 90 to be part of this. It is a beautiful way to celebrate the Lenten season.

If you would like to participate, please contact Teresa Baker at [email protected] or 479-713-9144 no later than Friday, March 3.

RECONCILIATION INSTRUCTION Our St. Joseph Lenten Reconciliation Service will be Tuesday, March 5, at 6:30 p.m. You are invited to come a little early, at 6:00 p.m., for a special confession preparation talk by Fr. Eliseo.

ARE YOU BEING CALLED TO SERVE AS AN EMHC?

Please consider serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. We are espe-cially asking for people to go to the sick and homebound, the 5:00 p.m. Mass, and the 11:30 a.m. Mass. The next training will be Sun-day, February 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel Center. Please call Alicia Minden (751-1080 evenings) if you plan to attend so enough supplies will be available.

OZARK CATHOLIC ACADEMY “REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided.”

—from the Memorare

As we begin Lent this Wednesday, we invite you to use the season to pray for the specific intention of the founding of Ozark Catholic Academy and its leadership: the school board, its volunteers and head of school, John Rocha. The school is asking for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for this intention by praying the Memorare once each day during Lent. Look for Ozark Catholic Academy prayer cards at the back of church or download a digital version from the school website.

Please join us in these 40 days prayer.

Visit our Facebook page to see the a digital version of the prayer card: https://www.facebook.com/OzarkCatholic/

The Spring Prayer Campaign of 40 Days for Life is scheduled for Wednesday, March 1, through Sunday, April 9. Please mark your calendar for an hour of weekly prayer in front of Planned Parenthood during this time. The 40 Days for Life campaign has proven results in the power of prayer, fasting, and public witness.

To date this international effort has witnessed 12,668 babies saved, 141 abortion clinic workers have quit (many have joined pro-life efforts) and 75 abortion centers have closed. We pray the closing of Planned Parenthood Fayetteville will make it 76!

ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

The Second of Twelve Promises in favor of those devoted to the Heart of Jesus as revealed to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque by Jesus:

The spirit of faith is indispensable to us if we are to attain a true intimacy with the Heart of Jesus. How different our suf-ferings and the ups and downs of our daily life become when we see them in the light of God. Then the troubling enigma of life vanishes, all things stand out clear, necessary and di-vinely ordered, and despite the bitterness of exile we enjoy an unalterable peace." (Fr. Mateo Crawley-Boevey, SS.CC, founder of Home Enthronement of the Sacred Heart Aposto-late) If you are interested in enthroning your home to the Sa-cred Heart of Jesus or would like more information, contact Kathleen Blessing, 236-0826 or [email protected].

EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME OCTAVO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

PHONE FAST For the first time ever, the Diocese of Little Rock is inviting people to “fast” by turning off their cell phones and televisions on Ash Wednesday, March 1, and Good Friday, April 14.

Silencing our phones and televisions for all or part of these holy days will give God a chance to call our hearts, especially if we couple this with at least an hour spent in silent prayer while disconnected from digital media. Please consider including this prac-tice in addition to almsgiving, prayer and fasting from food, which are traditional disciplines the Church observes during Lent.

Because all of these practices involve sacrifice of one sort or another, it would be especially beneficial to offer the spiritual fruits of that sacrifice for some specific cause — thus giving meaning to the suffering involved and producing greater spiritual benefit. The diocese is recommending parishioners offer up the sacrifices of Ash Wednesday for those who have left or been hurt by the Church. The sacrifices of Good Friday should be offered up for those who are marginalized and neglected — basing our reflec-tion on Jesus' parable of the Last Judgment in Matthew 25:31-46.
