• Essential to conducting quality research.– So much information available in different format from

so many different sources.

– Information that you select must be carefully reviewed to ensure the quality, authority, perspective and balance that best support of your research

Evaluating Web Sites

• Information on the internet is mostly unfiltered.

• Virtually anyone can create a web site on a topic regardless of their training, education or experience in the subject field.


When evaluating a web site, check these basic points:

• Author or contact person (usually located in the footer)

• Link to local home page (usually located in either header or footer)

• Institution (usually located in either header or footer)

• Domain

• Date of creation or revision (usually located in the footer)

• Purpose of the information (determined by examining the content)

• Vancouver is a "numbered" style, follows rules

established by the International Committee of

Medical Journal Editors.

• It is also known as: Uniform Requirements for

Manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals.

• List all references in order by number, not

alphabetically. Each reference is listed once

only, since the same number is used throughout

the paper.

In-text Citing

• A number is allocated to a source in the order in

which it is cited in the text. If the source is

referred to again, the same number is used.

• Example: as one author has put it "the darkest

days were still ahead" [1]: which is well

documented in the literature. [2-5] This proves

that "the darkest days were still ahead". [1]
