NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH UPDATE

The Security Committee met January 5 to discuss how to improve the neighborhood watch program and reduce petty crime in the neighborhood.

A subcommittee headed by Carla Hatler will be looking into using some of the neighborhood watch activities other neighborhoods have found useful.

This past Saturday, John Luther of the Barton Hills Neighborhood spoke about some of the activities they have used to great success. Their program is associated with CLASP ( Citizen Led Austin Safety Partnership). You can access more information about the program at the following website. www.clasp.weebly.com

Their program is based on having neighbors looking out for suspicious activities and reporting possible criminal activity for the police to follow up. They have volunteers who “patrol” the neighborhood in cars with magnetic neighborhood watch signs for an hour each week at random times, day and evening. Volunteers carry a clipboard, a cell phone and report anything that looks unusual to 911. They are not expected to leave their cars, talk to any strangers, or confront anyone. Volunteers would be required to attend a training orientation prior to starting to patrol.

The programs have also provided T-shirts with “neighborhood watch “ printed on the shirts for neighbors to wear while doing their normal daily walk. The purpose of both of these activities is to point out to potential burglars that someone is watching and might report them to the police. Their crime rates have been substantially reduced and the committee will be looking at setting up a meeting and seeking volunteers who could provide some time to drive around or wear a T-shirt while out walking.

Contact Carla Hatler at [email protected] if you would be interested in volunteering to help with patrols or to be a block captain. A date will be set up for a meeting in February to discuss this further.

Camp Mabry Master Plan Update

Camp Mabry has started a new comprehensive master planning effort to enhance the appearance of the 386 acre campus and improve the community awareness of the campus. A presentation to the public was held earlier last December and the Texas Military Forces along with their consultants discussed with neighbors the desire to “open up” the campus after the near lockdown following 9/11.

No major redesigns or redevelopment are planned, but the Texas National Guard would like to look at ideas for beautification, improved traffic access, better pedestrian access by the public, enhanced use of the existing facilities, and expansion of the “park” areas on the western edge of the property. The plan will also look at security and overall operations while keeping an eye on the historic character of the campus.

The plan is intended to provide an outline and guide for prioritizing the annual budget and resource allocations for the next 10 -25 years.

The planning process started with data collection, moved into the public input stage and received the following comments at the December open house:

Return the main entrance to the original gatewayRealign the Pecos exit to align with the Pecos intersection to

improve traffic flowHave a fire control plan in place due to the density of natural

brush on the western edgeThe public comments will be reviewed and a draft plan will

be presented at a public open house sometime in the summer. After public input, the plan is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.

C a m p M a b r y i s the third oldest active military facility in Texas, established in the 1890’s and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Only the parade ground, now a popular jogging venue for the public, remains from the 1892 establishment.

Several original 1918 and 1930’s era buildings still exist and are occupied by the camp for various activities. One of the historic 1918 buildings, formerly the mess hall, now houses the Texas Military Forces Museum. Open to the public, the museum provides both indoor and outdoor displays of the history of the Texas Military, along with uniforms, weapons, vehicles, and aircraft. The museum provides conference and meeting rooms, decorated with historic artifacts, available to the general public. Although no fees are charged for the use of the rooms, a donation is requested.

Unique in Texas military training sites, this camp is located in urban Central Austin, but also includes large native and natural areas. These areas are currently undergoing restoration and study as a part of the native landscape management program intended to reduce erosion, manage invasive species and promote rare and native species. A successful start to this program is the rehabilitation of the upper pond and its attraction to wood ducks.

A website with further updates is anticipated to be in place later in the summer. Until then, for further information or to be placed on a next open house mailing list, please contact Col Amy Cook, 512 782 1034

Camp Mabry Master Plan Update - (Continued from Page 2) DOG OWNER ETIQUETTEPlease respect your neighbors and try to avoid having your pets

use other neighbor’s yards for their “messes”.If you must use a neighbor’s yards, please be so kind and clean

up your dog’s poop from the yard and sidewalk while you are on your daily walk.

Studies have shown that an abundance of canine fecal material can constitute the dominant source of airborne bacteria in neighborhoods. Children playing in their yards should not be exposed to high levels of fecal material. Please be aware that continual exposure to urine and excrement can also kill the grass, shrubs and trees that make our neighborhood so enjoyable for a walk.

Please take the time to carry bags and clean up after your wonderful pets as you enjoy your daily walks along our shady streets.

& Pinktober365Team Tiara is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to raising

money to fund research and education for breast cancer as well as provide outreach services to those affected by it.  2012 will mark our 7th year in this fight against breast cancer.  To date, we have raised over $600,000 for breast cancer awareness, research and direct support for survivors.  In 2012, Team Tiara will begin directly funding research into metastatic breast cancer. This is an under-funded area of research where we need to have a lasting impact.  Men and women do not die when their cancer is confined to their breasts.  We lose them when that cancer spreads to their bones, liver, lungs, brain and other organs -- robbing them of time with their families and friends.  This is the heart-breaking side of breast cancer, and an area of research we need to be a part of.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 in 2012, specifically targeted to metastatic breast cancer research. SO WE are excited to announce that www.pinktober365.com launched January 1.  This new website will profile 365 pink warriors -- survivors, walkers, researchers, and advocates. We want to hear your story, whether you are a fighter, survivor, family or friend affected by breast cancer. Go to www.pinktober365.com to share your story or obtain more information. Team Tiara would be honored to hear from you.

volunteer demographic. Divine Canine volunteer teams care about their community. They appreciate and want to share the joy and unconditional love their dogs freely give.

By delivering unconditional love, affection, gentle exercise and companionship, our dogs promote physical and emotional wellness. Visits to partner facilities last at least one hour. Volunteers choose sites based on their own interests.

In the program, each dog and handler are trained and tested to ensure both are confident in all the situations they might face in their volunteer work. An AKC Canine Good Citizen title is a prerequisite for entering therapy dog training, which includes classroom instructions as well as on site experience with patients and medical equipment.

Divine Canines is hoping to find some willing volunteers from Pemberton Heights. The time commitment can be as little as two hours a month. The satisfaction that comes from sharing the love of your dog with others is limitless.

The Pemberton JournalNew Years and Resolutions

By Hjalmar Perez, CPT, LMT and Q Estrada, CI-PT, MTISo a New Year and again resolutions! Do

we know the definition of a resolution? What lifestyle changes do I have to commit too? What are obstacles we have to work around that will challenge us to commit? These are probably questions that come across our mind, the day of the first of the year. Honestly, do we have to be ridged or just create enough awareness to give yourself the energy to move to the next step? We all want our resolutions to be manageable and easy to complete. Well, we are here to assist you one more time. Last time we talked about S.M.A.R.T, how this acronym should be your golden rule too completing your goals, in this case your resolutions.

So let’s begin with the definition of the word: resolution. The American Heritage Dictionary has 14 statements to define resolution. I will only state 3; 1. Firm determination. 2. The act of resolving to do something. 3. A course of action determined or decided upon. It seems, in our case, the 3rd is the most feasible. Let’s face it; this is the toughest step in the process. Most of us need to sit and be methodical about taking action. This fulfills the how, what, when questions. What are yours?

With the start of any new endeavor, it’s quite common to look at our lifestyle and look for areas we can improve on.    One change I made several yrs ago was to not make a resolution. Yes, not to make a resolution. I decided to make a list of 6-12

things I wanted to complete or change throughout the year. All had to deal with a nutritional goal, a fitness goal and a spiritual goal. I even went as far as, adding some volunteer, community, self care goals…just in those you have six ideas. Now you can work on a list for the whole year. Take some time throughout the month to glance and stay on track…don’t allow yourself to take two steps back. Now and again you might side steps but move forward. Take some quite time to glance at your list, to reflect on your journey and work towards fruition.

What obstacles will challenge you and how will you overcome them? Let’s face it, there are going to be times when our Will will be challenged. Such things as our commitments to our family, our friends and our community will be barriers to overcome. The good news is, you have 365 days, 168 hrs per week and you only need a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes per week to 4 hrs per month to commit to one goal. Keep in mind, our resolutions should remain attainable and realistic. If you find there are too many goals, then scale back; reorganize and prioritize. No one likes feeling defeated. We do have the option to not put ourselves in the opportunity of failure.

This 2012, let’s begin with a desire to set our course of action, to enjoy our journey to learn, to train, to maintain, to change; at all levels at all degrees. Also take time to reflect on positive changes; those that come from

our desire to change but also by the outcomes of our actions. As always, my business partner and I wish you balance, harmony, and good health. Be well be blessed.

Make an impact.
