Holiday Carriage Rides through Pemberton

The holiday season is here and, once again, we will be able to enjoy all of the beautiful decorations throughout the neighborhood while riding in a magical horse drawn carriage. The carriage rides will take place starting at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 11th. The last ride will take place at 8:00 p.m. Thank you to the Peeler Family for hosting and making this event possible. The Peelers are located at 1501 Gaston. Reservations have been made (the slots filled up very quickly at the PHNA picnic), and there are only a few remaining spots available at the 5:00 p.m. time slot. Please arrive 15 minutes early for the ride and plan to enjoy cookies and drinks before or after your ride. If you would like to make a reservation for one of the few remaining 5:00 p.m. time spots or get on the waiting lists, please contact Jahnna Peeler at [email protected]. If anyone is interested in bringing cookies or drinks, please contact Jahnna as well. Thank you, Peelers.

Experienced. Trusted.Bringing You the BEST Value!

I know that many of you love our Pemberton area for the tree shaded walks it provides. The “walk-ability “ of our neighbor is often mentioned as one of the most important reasons to living in the neighborhood. We have the wonderful Shoal Creek hike and bike trail to use but, we also enjoy being central enough to walk to many restaurants, shops, grocery stores, coffee shops and other destinations. Many of you are very familiar with these and other favorite spots, but for the newcomers in our neighborhood, I would like to take you on a walk each month to explore the attractions close to hand. Some of our favorite walks involve a short trip for breakfast on the weekends. Walking in the neighborhood we can reach Kerby Lane, Texas French Bread, Café Express and Russell’s in just a few minutes. All of these cafes offer breakfast on the weekends and you can probably find us at one or the other on a Saturday or Sunday morning depending on our mood: Kerby Lane offers a funky spot for apple whole wheat pancakes or migas. Russell’s is a great spot for outside dining enjoying a variety of eggs benedicts or french toast. Texas French Bread is the iconic spot for great pastries. Café Express features “scrambles”, frittatas, and self serve coffee in a variety of gourmet flavors and brews.

WALKING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD If you are up for a longer walk ( about two miles round trip), going south on the hike and bike trail, you’ll find Austin Java a perfect spot to enjoy omelettes, pancakes and breakfast tacos. And if you like to work on your laptop with a cup of coffee, or bring your dog along, you’ll find yourself in lots of company. It’s quite acceptable to dine at any of the places noted in your walking clothes, so enjoy the fall weather and one of Austin’s best dining venues while you take in some exercise and enjoy our shady streets and parks.

Freshly Cut for the Holidays

Our neighborhood periodically has people going from home to home, ringing doorbells and asking for your time. Often these are concerned citizens working on campaigns and petitions. They may also be your neighbors doing their due diligence required by the lengthy process to request a demolition permit, building permit, floor area increase or board of adjustment variance review. For the city commission meetings, often photographs of “neighbor context” are required to be provided, so you may see people taking photographs of the houses in the neighborhood. Austin does a number of studies and plans involving neighborhoods and you may encounter consultants taking photographs to include in their reports as examples of historic context, scale or density. In addition, Pemberton is a registered historic landmark district, so people may be taking photographs of homes they may want to duplicate for their home or remodel.

They may also be taking photographs to use as a basis for ideas for improvements in landscaping, fencing or paint colors. One of the advantages stated for listing an area as an historic district is an increase in tourism, so people walking around and admiring our neighborhood are to be expected. These activities are protected by law and should not be a concern for the neighborhood. They do not need any “authorization or permission” to undertake these activities. Unfortunately there are unscrupulous so l i c i t o r s who a l so f r equen t ou r neighborhood. And we have experienced a distressing amount of petty car break-ins and other crimes. Anyone who may appear to be suspicious can and should be reported to the police. You can report activity on line at www.ci.austin.tx.us/police You may also want to report any suspicious activity on the list serve. [email protected]
